    I really appreciate the rawness of this one and you making this video in the first place. As someone around the same level of "youtube success", and who also makes similar game design essay content, I 'd like to share my two cents if that's okay.
    ou determine your own success. Something I've learned in my youtube work is that you have to make your videos for yourself first and foremost, otherwise what's the point? Modern day youtube feels daunting and cold honestly. Everything is determined by views, sub counts, daily engagement etc,etc. It's all numbers numbers numbers, more more more. But that is not why youtube started. It started as a platform to "broadcast yourself" and share with the world who you are. The "success" of your channel, of your content, comes from the work itself and your enjoyment of the work. My goal for each video is to have one person enjoy it. That's is. And if I enjoy making it, watching it, and uploading it, then I have succeeded. And this is coming from someone who received single digit views on videos that would take months to make, for years. I'm greatful to have a "viral" video essay and that my work is enjoyed, but at the end of the day, I never do it for the views or the clout. I do it for me and my love of the craft. I'm only human, I sometimes get disappointed in my growth as well compared to others, but comparing yourself to others, only leads to doubt and a worse version of yourself and your craft. I really, really dislike the way the internet world works now and the "rat race" of content creation. But it doesn't have to be that way man. You determine your own success, not some number on a screen.
    I do freelance gamedev work. I had one project that I co-created that was released without my permission and against my wishes for someone else's profit. I wasn't done with my work and I was never ready for it to be released. That game has been on a couple of huge youtube accounts, some of which I grew up watching. Those youtubers and streamers playing my work will receive more attention and money for it then I ever will. Lemme tell you that is a real, real complex feeling lol. Seeing youtubers that inspired me play our game after being betrayed, hurt a lot. Having millions of people seeing the game, but myself and others were thrown under the bus for the sake of it. Is that really what success is? The loss of morals and hurting others for attention? The situation taught me what I truly value and why I do what I do. For the love of the craft man. I watched your recent AK-Xolotl video and have been starting to view your other video essays well. Great, great stuff! But it breaks my heart to see creatives I feel a kindred spirit with lament about how awful the new creative world is. It's rough out here for sure, but please never give up creating. It doesn't matter if you receive 1 view or 1 million views. At the end of the day, it only matters if you enjoy it or not. That's what true success is. Do it for yourself man, and you'll make even better videos then you thought you could. Maybe I'm selfish or naive or just plain dumb, but that's what I think at least.
    Hope I wasn't too pretentious on my little soapbox lol. TLDR, you're not alone man. Making honest to god videos is isolating to say the least. But there are other folks in the same boat trying to make it work too. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

      I really appreciated the heartfelt reply. If I'm being honest, next to the smash documentary, this is probably the second thing I'm most proud of making, not only for myself, but for the multiple people who've shared similar sentiment to yours. Thank you for the thoughtful comment, and I wish you the best.

    Something I learned really quickly with UA-cam is that focusing on your numbers is usually not worth it if you want to strictly make content that you enjoy making. Its kinda hard to see so many other youtubers reaching those large numbers, but its never good to compare yourself to them. If you do focus on that, even when you are successful its probably not going to feel all that special, since there is always going to be someone above you, and you gotta accept that thats ok. Just focus on what you already have, and know that even if one person saw your video and was impacted by it, that that is something to be proud of.
    Amazing video by the way. It really shed light on experiences that I do hope more people can understand. UA-cam is a painful platform to work on for sure.

    FANTASTIC video, content creation is a double edged sword. on one hand, it can be one of the most rewarding and joyous things; but it can also be one of the most draining if you're not in the right mindset for it. if you go into content creation to be the biggest or to be the best, youre only setting yourself up for failure. i myself went through a similar battle and took a 6 month long break from streaming where i just prioritized working on myself, and only recently came back and have been having an absolute BLAST, not caring about numbers or anything. i also read the subtle art of not giving a fuck, absolutely AMAZING book that i cant recommend enough to everybody out there. thanks for putting your passion into your content sl1ppey, its refreshing and inspiring :)

    Back during the quarantine, I decided to start making youtube videos, but the entire process of filming, editing, and promoting the videos made me more stressed out than the actual enjoyment i got out of it. Growing up I always wanted to be a popular youtuber, but after making some videos i realized... wait, i dont actually like doing this HAHA. it felt like i wasnt being creative for myself, but rather for others.
    I did start making one video in a style that I think better fit my geniune personality much more, but I havent finished it and prob won't ever upload it. now im thinking of going back and just making some videos about my niche interests, without worrying about if anyone else likes them. like i know 1 million people are not going to be interested in why the Star Tours ride queue is the best line in Disneyland (and how the line might be just as, if not more, important than the actual ride), but i think expressing my ideas in a cool silly little video would be fun to make

    Yo this is great, my dude. Some of my favorite videos that I've made are also some of the ones with the fewest views. There's a saying I've heard about movies that goes something like: "the problem with film as a business is that it's an art. and the problem with film as an art is that it's a business." And I think balancing those two things can be so difficult, bc it does feel so good to have something blow up; but I promised myself a long time ago that I wouldn't make anything that I didn't legitimately want to make. And it's worked out so far. Hopefully, it'll keep working

    I personally have stepped back from twitch streaming after spreading myself thin across both platforms to focus on UA-cam. I have also entered what I have coined "my flop era" and its been a challenge to stay motivated.
    I think it's hard for creators to not blame ourselves or question our own worth as creators when the numbers are low. Neglecting the fact that there are thousands of variables outside of our own control.
    HOWEVER, bringing even a small amount of joy to someone's day has and will always be my greatest happiness in life, and I will continue to just make shit. 💕

    Im happy that I found this channel in my feed

  • @Eishous
    @Eishous Рік тому +2

    Over the last decade for some it became a genuine option to make a living of content. It’s the norm for people to make a channel with the goal of making it big on UA-cam. Even before money was involved. But nowadays I feel like money is the main motivator for most people. The mindset of “if I can’t profit of it why bother” has become prevalent. Feeling bad and calling a video a failure for underperforming and breaking it down to statistics undermines the work put into it.
    But like you said, I also think it’s the healthiest to create for creating’s sake. If it works out great, if not well then you still created something.
    But as someone who puts to much time into my own videos I get it. Number go up makes brain happy. I’m gonna stop rambling now hope I wasn’t too pretentious.
    Andyway great video really enjoyed it!

    • @sl1ppey
      @sl1ppey  Рік тому

      Not pretentious at all. You took the words right out of my mouth. I think back to pre-2010 YT and how, back then, the prospect of making money off of YT videos was a pipedream, and I think that created a unique environment where everyone on the platform was just making stuff for it's own sake. Now this isn't to say artists shouldn't make money off of their work, they should! But I think there's a certain authenticity the comes from the removal of money that might not be replicated again for decades, if ever. Just a cool thing to think about, I guess.

    There is also the point as to where there is a big portion of people that do not have interest in watching new people. They don’t ‘trust’ them and if they don’t enjoy something within the first 3 minutes, they quit. Don’t even give the person on the chance.
    Bug part is on statistics, liek how you can see how not even 30% even make it past the 5 minute mark, and only like 2% get to the end.
    I love making stuff, and I love showing it to people. Even if it’s not many I still like making others happy. And yet, almost any time I try to push it, like ‘hey look at this thing I made’ I feel selfish, thinking I’m being an attention wh*re and only using people for their reactions, even though I know thats not true. It gets even worse when it just gets swept under the rug, makes me think It was ‘shunned’ for one reason or another.
    The loop of content creation, for YT, for Twitch, or just for a small group of other people, Its an endless cesspool that everyone wants out of, but its almost always just a dice roll

    See that's the problem, we compare ourselves to others and we shouldn't do that AT ALL because they are not us. Their story is not our story, their weakness is not our weakness, their strength is not our strenth. People continually compare their work and lives to others whether that's being good at video games, editing, writing, sports, etc, but the fact of the matter is, there is no comparison because they are not you and you are not them. If you do want to get spiritual about this, they are but a facet and you are another, expressing the whole, through different faces.

    I blame lazy people who want to play games all day long and get money for it. They all want to create content even if this type already exists. So there's hours of useless spam around the site. And they get upset because they wanted the results, not the content created. They want numbers and money. So yeah, they should quit right away because unless you really enjoy creating good stuff, unless you have A LOT to say and share, nobody needs this trash. BG3 is a hype today. So 100 people make similar content reviewing the game. Why? They all know the review WILL be created by someone. So the only reason they make more is to try and grab some of the profit for themselves. Their content is of no value. We watch it because it's randomly recommended to us, not because it's the best video.
    You know all people can't be bloggers. You know at some point the offer will flood demand greatly. You know there won't be enough viewers for everyone. So why start yet another channel that does the same as the rest? It's up to each person to see if he or she is doing that and is part of the problem. I don't wanna point finger because I don't know, I have no time to study who came first and whose 4 hour videos are better. Just stating the obvious here. Pick any other job and if people go mad and overflow the area, they will be just as miserable. Selling hot-dogs, cleaning windows, fixing cars - anything. If 1000 people on each street start doing the same thing, they will all live in shit. Flip a coin for who should leave, I don't care, I wish I could do the same of course but I realize I cannot. So I don't try to become second Toast, second Dream, second Pewdiepie... They took the niche. Maybe they don't deserve so many views but there's nothing that can be done here. Compete and lose or don't compete and be fine. That's the choice.

    • @sl1ppey
      @sl1ppey  Рік тому +2

      Really well said. It's similar to another quote in the book I mentioned that a lot of the time people are enamored with the endpoint and disregard what it took to get there. In your example, people see a popular stream and think "I can do that" which, to be fair, a lot of people can! But there's also a lot of work involved and sacrifices to make to get to that point. And those sacrifices have to be made even though the "goal" of recognition/fame is not guaranteed. That's why it's a risk and for me it was a risk of feeling like I wasted time/energy making something that no one would see. Only recently I think I've found joy in the process itself (I crunched to make this in two days, for example, because I was having so much fun making it).
      Appreciate this well written comment and I'm glad to have opened a door to this conversation because I think it's one that isn't talked about enough.

    "Creating content" for "subscribers" to "consume" is an unhealthy - frankly poisonous way of looking at it. What the hell is a "content"? Content Creator is such a generic term we willingly label ourselves with. We may not be special, but we are not nothing.

    • @sl1ppey
      @sl1ppey  10 місяців тому

      I hope that wasn’t the message you took away from it, if so, I should have conveyed my thoughts a bit better. I didn’t want to perpetuate the idea that recognition should be the *only* reason to create, just that it’s still nice to know others enjoyed or interacted with whatever it is you made.
      Also yes I absolutely loathe the term “Content Creator.” I feel as though it perpetuates the idea that people just produce a product with the sole purpose to be consumed, which can be true in the cases of content mills, but isn’t the case for everyone.

    • @actualhyena

      @@sl1ppey This sounded a billion times more rude than I intended by the way. My bad.
      There's something about the language of the UA-cam 'meta' that makes me feel ill.
      Boiling down work to a product is a fast track to not respecting your work in the long run I found. Even if recognition is not the goal.
      Now, about playing to the algorithm's beat and why I and many viewers probably aren't contributing our views.
      All I do now on UA-cam is scroll. Unless I'm married to the topic, I can't really bring myself to watch something different, which kind of makes discovery useless.
      I liked Hylics. Real great game. Only was interested in the one Twitch VOD I saw from someone I'm already subbed to, however I think UA-cam is confused because it keeps giving me Hylics related stuff to watch. I can't do one-off stuff anymore without feeling "punished". Turning it off just recommends content farm slop. I think deleting your watch history might help, but egh...
      The recommendation system is NOT a discovery system, just as well. It'll recommend videos from channels you don't subscribe to, but it won't stray in a way that doesn't feel like a happy accident.
      It's a slot machine to me.
      I wish the Explore tab was even remotely useful! It's only the most-watched (and often just slop) videos instead of perhaps, I dunno - Something to push forward up-and-comers.
      It may as well have a big "sponsored" label at the top since it's just ads, too.
      Shorts took off, as it meant literal fresh accounts could get views and rally people to their channel. Even then, it was entirely due to external pressure factors. That makes me think UA-cam needs an actual competitive threat to spice things up.
      This was a bit of a ramble, but there are very few videos like this one that are hitting all the right nails on the head. The ones that seem to address this are mostly just talking about burn-out and playing the "game" smarter.

      It's tough, but you really need to find fulfillment in the creation process itself, because views are an external motivator that's out of your control. Just have to treat it like learning to play an instrument and focus on improving over time.

    I would say that content has one thing that is important. Content is not something that is just something you just do to be professional. You need to be better than the rest. Content is very important to understand the analytics and that's a lot of work. I would say you need to see the evolution of content. And the algorythm is basically how strong can you keep up with generating views. CTR is so confusing. But it's doable. Me for example took 1 week to basically only concentrate on my upcoming videos and put in so much work that I noticed a gigantic difference between my video that will come today vs my video next week Tuesday. Videos went up from 2 hours to 12 work and it's a passion and obsession. And I am pretty sure if you are able to be different enough and people remember you then you win. Yes we as a new gen have the disadvantage that some people have already saturated their UA-cam feed. Thus we are rather below the roster. But I also reach people and right now I am very sure that if you find people to work together with and find out a way to get your face on more places to be seen then you are able to get somewhere to live of content creation. After watching 2 videos I am subbing now. Keep it up my man 🦾
