  • This reaction is our first time watching these Pink Floyd songs performed live. The 2006 live version of Echoes from Gdańsk, Poland, is the last time David Gilmour or Richard Wright ever performed this epic song. We also give a first-time reaction to One of These Days Live from Earls Court (PULSE 1994). Nick Mason joins for this one.
This is our first time seeing and listening to these performances. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

This song (Echoes) is a musical gem! And this version from Gdansk is probably the best! Every time I hear the last vocal part, I want to cry - considering the lyrics and the fact that Rick was really seriously ill at that time, and yet he gave an absolutely great performance. No wonder after all that David will never play this song again.

As a BIG P.F. fan the end of Echoes seem like Dave and Rick saying goodbye to each other. Roger said once that the first part was about humanity lack of empathy towards each other and the second part was about a rebirth when there was empathy towards each other. Lighting director Mark Brinkman said he had a challenge so all 100,000 people could she what was going on. Dave less is more and he said that this was song was the favorite to perform cause of Rick.

I noticed Dev had said they "borrowed" from Phantom on this one. It was actually the other way around, Echoes came out years before ALW wrote the music for Phantom.

Mi spiace contraddirti amico ma nel 2006 Richard Wright non era malato o ancora non ne era a conoscenza e il cancro che lo portò alla morte due anni dopo non era alla gola ma ai polmoni.

Great reaction. Thanks for checking this version too!! Can never have too much Echoes!
You nailed it - it IS a conversation between Dave & Rick - both musically & vocally, which is why David said he'll not perform it again since Rick's passing - and I respect that.
This is such a wonderful & powerful version - the sound mixing is top notch, ESPECIALLY on a surround system! Cheers.

Awesome. This album, Meddle needed to be made for the group to move forward for the next 4 albums.
Also, I was at this 1994 concert in GB.3 of 4 concerts. And 12 concerts in the United States in 1994 Even the one in Houston @ Rice Stadium that was shorten due lightning and a deluge of water. It seemed god did this on purpose. The lightning was perfectly timed with the songs. And the big fat rain drops falling through the lasers beams. Due to the power going on and off several times. and everything drenched, they didn’t have an opportunity to play Comfortably Numb that night. Finally, I was able to see the concert in its entirety about 10 days after the Houston concert in San Diego, Ca. And I was in G’dansk 2006. I was so happy to finally hear my song, Echoes, being played. And was happy to see/hear this song one last time before Richard’s passing.
David Gilmour and Richard Wroght’s voices were made for one another

Love the Dr Who theme quote! Pulse and Gdańsk best concerts ever and this ECHOES is the best IMHO - I was at the birth of ECHOES so this holds a special place in my heart. You also have PHIL MANZANERA on second guitar - ex Roxy Music. David has his Hendrix guitar strap. Essentially you have later Pink FLOYD here minus Nick but apart from David and Rick you have Guy Pratt on bass who took over from Roger and is also on bass throughout PULSE. As regards the Phantom riff Roger’s comment was that he was aware but couldn’t ‘be arsed’ to sue Lloyd Webber. The end of ECHOES is moving and epic. A fitting send off for Rick who was such a huge part of the FLOYD sound not only with brilliant keyboards and soundscapes to harmonies and the odd lead vocal

Pink Floyd are the Undisputed Gods of Live performance. They are the Supreme Masters of blending the visual with the musical. They create a visceral experience for the audience. David Gilmour is a living guitar God. He can do more with one note than most guitarists can do with an entire fret board.

Wonderful reaction, guys. You are one of the few reactors who has gone through all three iterations of Echoes, with a great video sound quality for all of them. Kudos to you both for that. For me, the Gdansk performance is the best of the three, with the audio version a close second. Their Pompeii version was fine, but they were still so young then, still learning their craft. And the sound system back then couldn't compete with the technology available at Gdansk. Still, their youthful vigor really shines through in Pompeii, and I'm so glad it was captured on film, providing an important historical record of a band that was about to explode on the world scene.

When Pink Floyd opened with this at JFK Stadium in 1987, it brought a tear to my eye. I couldn't believe I was able to see 3 of the 4 guys responsible for this masterpiece. When I saw the Animals tour in 77, they played no old stuff. Just all of Animals and then all of Wish You Were Here and Money for the encore. The Philly 87 soundboard version is here on UA-cam.

How cool that you would comment "looks like an accountant" referring to Nick Mason. David Gilmour comes on stage dressed as if he's there to fix a leaky faucet, then transforms in front of you as the best guitar soloist in existence. PF don't care to distinguish themselves with anything but the performance for the audience. IMO, the "Division Bell" tour (which was released a year later as "P.U.L.S.E." is the most incredible live show ever.
A couple of FYIs: the pig controversy began when Roger Waters got a temporary injunction to halt the use of "Alfie" (the inflatable used on the cover of the "Animals" album) by Gilmour. David countered by having a set of testicles added. The ultimate FU to Roger was changing to Boars (far more aggressive). Bassist Guy Pratt (who is a far better player than Waters could ever hope to be) is Richard Wright's son-in-law.
Also, "One Of These Days" was the closing number for the first set. They would end the second set with "Run Like Hell".
Thanks for the great pairing here - keep 'em coming.

No, Phantom of the Opera "borrowed" the descending line from Echoes. Andrew Lloyd Webber's score was written in the mid 1980's, while Echoes came out in 1971. Having said that, many parts of the melodic sections of Echoes borrow from previously-written tunes within the rock pantheon.

I was fortunate to see One of These Days played at the Three Rivers Stadium production of the Pulse tour. I was with my brothers down on the field for the first half of the show, which of course concluded with OTD. You don't see it in the official film you watched, but at the conclusion, the pigs fall straight down from the towers. My youngest brother had connections with the Steelers, so we watched the second half of the show from the Steelers private box. Oddly enough, Dan Rooney didn't come to see the show that evening.

I first heard parts from "One Of These Days" in the very early seventies as backdrop of a German documentary about volcanoes. First album I got from Pink Floyd was "Dark Side Of The Moon" in March 1974. It wasn't until 1975, after I got "Wish You Were Here" that I acquired "Meddle" and discovered "Echoes". Damn, that was a trip. The live version here at Gdansk is the most magnificent version I have ever heard. Got the Album with the DVDs and enjoyed both sound and vision quite often. I have 221 discs of Pink Floyd (don't know how many albums they represent. I rip everything to PC with a folder for each disc, so double or tripple albums are seen as two or three discs. Most of the lot are soundboard bootlegs). Thanks for the sharing of the music and your thoughts. Warm greetings and salutations from Belgium.

Great reaction, my first time finding you guys. Can feel and understand your emotions.
Exquisite. Absolute Masterpiece. Yes, as said by others, you can feel David and Richard talking to each other through their instruments. Incredible and a sad feeling too.
My first listen to Pink Floyd was, ‘Echoes’, as a 15 year old in 1971, just after Meddle had been released.
It’s pretty much my favourite piece of Floyd music, but only just, as there’s so many Masterpieces.
Especially, ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘The Wall’. All incredible Concept Albums. So many more great Albums as well as those, but they’re my own personal favourites.
Also, you’ll no doubt be familiar with ‘Comfortably Numb’, from ‘The Wall’. For me the Live versions are best, as they have the long extended Solo’s, to close the track. I know the version from the Live Pulse Show in 1994, is brilliant and well loved, including by me, but If I may, could I highly recommend you try this version too. My own personal favourite performance of ‘Comfortably Numb’.
I was lucky enough to see the ‘One Night Only’ Cinema showing of David Gilmour’s return to the Pompeii Amphitheater, in 2016, with his Band. (Pink Floyd’s previous visit being in 1971, when they were filmed playing ‘Echoes’, in the Centre of the Amphitheater, with no audience), which I know you’ve seen.
And this version of ‘Comfortably Numb’, from that 2016 Show, is sensational. This time to an audience.
And what a light Show this has too. All in the stunning setting of this Roman Amphitheater.
David Gilmour at his stunning best, aged 70. Genius.
Incredible. Just my own feelings. Hope you can manage to watch this video, you won’t regret it.

Regarding the wild boars rather than piggies: the region is very big on boar roasts, I've been there a few times and if on official business, cultural exchange or similar, they tend to organise a huge boar roast for guests. I suppose the wild boars are synonymous with the city and region so it could well an acknowledgement of the fact. Just a guess!

Don't cry😢I, really, like your reactions....We all have songs like that, which reminds us of good, or bad memories😢Honesty yes😂I would like to see what you wrote, during the song, please😂Peace from France ✌️ PS: why is Nick Mason reacting to his own music?🤔😅😅🤭🤭✌️Sorry, it's a joke, but you look like to Nick Mason, so much (with short hair)😂....More, seriously, please, my, lady....No, Nick,😂 please, ask to your wife to show us what she wrote, during those songs😢Please....You're both great....✌️
