The jungle movement and the post-punk scene, plus the hip hop (etc) appeared as a doom enlightnment of what was misunderstood in the 70s and the 80s, maybe because of the material conditions, partly. But there's an intuitive pulse in me that makes me feel the need to say that there's a creative lack separated of the objetive-economical basis. What i mean can be resumed in this: how difficult is to do a 'new', or contemporáry jungle or breakbeat. A contemporáry Dub. It has its politoco-economical explanations, of course. But i think that Those are not fullfilling the question as to resolve it clear. I refer to what aura makes, to how big pieces affect. To its rareness, weirdness that makes em eerie and familiar at the same time.
The other day I was watching tv on cartons network at mid night and Crunchyroll and they use this master piece in the background and I said buriiial yeah jajjjj
That's amazing how Cartoon Network and Crunchyroll know who Burial are! I would've loved to hear this in the background of something or some promotion on Cartoon Network or something. That sounds fantastic!
All I know is that no other album encapsulates my life in ( not so much Britain as a whole but ) London better than this one ... ( this might sound pompous ) my nocturnal , introspective space in particular . A milestone in music , this is .
burial defines the beginning of a new unpredictable cycle in music with a cyberpunk-esque atmosphere without the hauntological clichés going against any cheap tricks of the fall of capitalism and uses only pure originality on each second of his eerie yet hopeful pieces.
Future music for the jilted generation of the dark dub culture. This guy is just so far out there, he can't be touched. Unique. The best music floating for a long time.
What a monster of a track, first time listening to a Burial project properly. I was introduced to Burial via a music review of The Weeknd’s Trilogy album a few years ago. The music critic mentioned that the album had some Burial influences (I know that Illangelo is a fan of Burial from his Soundcloud) and so I now I’m here. This is amazing lol.
It was so out there, I'll be honest it was very tricky to appreciate it's depth at the time (I was 20/21, a jungle/d'n'b/techno/garage nutcase but enjoyed anything and everything electronic - every genre you can think of, but also grew up listening to JMJ and other electronic soundscapey stuff from my dad's CD collection) - it was so so out there, and when Untrue came about, it felt a little more accessible. But fast forward to from around the age of 33 onwards (>2017) I found myself shelving Untrue and even his longer soundscapes for his debut album - and it still hits now in 2025 as it did when it 'clicked' on me several years ago. It's a strange album, every time I think a tune is an album highlight (best on the album), on another day/month/year it'll be another off the album. And not many albums at all (of any genre of any era) are capable of doing that to you.
Guys I don’t really dive deep into the “what samples he uses” hunt but I swear on my life, I hear some Donkey Kong country sounds from the snowy levels :O
Wouldn't be surprised. It's widely known own amongst his fans that he uses sounds and samples from his everyday life and routines. Which include videos games. He uses a few sounds from metal gear solid.
DUUUUUUDE YES i wrote a paper about cyber punk and one reseach article given to us mentioned burial and I thought this song had Donkey Kong Country vibes
Why does this feel like future music that is forever unreachable? Like some dystopian fever dream
Because, as mark fisher puts it, 'the future is cancelled'
It's from the book 1984

That dystopian nightmare is becoming little by little a reality.

The year is 2020, and this man still needs Melvin.
Incredibly nuanced and detailed cityscape and atmosphere. Glittering lights of the metropolitan city

I concur. Having never visited London (or Britain), I imagine this is exactly what it sounds like.

transport me where am happy, complete and out of time. this keep me alive.
Love that trumpet sound that begins around minute 1:00, just elevates this so much
Honestly…… makes the song 10x better than it already is
3:23 eerie and profound
Btw the sample is “Flame” by Bhaskar Chandravakar

Burial's debut album is as good as Untrue and it doesn't get the love it deserves. It dives through darker moods, but it's equally pure and emotional.
Folks were going bananas over the first album around the time of its release. It's a huge reason why Untrue was so hotly anticipated.
this is just a masterpiece
It's better.
