Him noticing Martha closing the dead man's eyes was the moment she earned the invite to travel. He only takes on people who show a remarkable virtue he values, especially one he feels he needs more of himself. Martha is compassionate - a trait he was, in that moment, failing to demonstrate.
For Rose, it was her bravery. For Mickey, his cleverness. For Jack, his love of life. For Jackie, he forgot she was still in the TARDIS.
Fun fact: The Judoon were created purely to annoy David Tennant. Being naturally Scottish, he would usually say Juduhn not Judoon. So they made him say Judoon plutoon upon the moon 9:34 (not Juduhn plutuhn upuhn the muhn) just to annoy him!
OMG really?! I love that 🤣🤣
Your phonetics don’t chime with the accent from David’s home accent. I don’t doubt your story - just that spelling. On thinking further, soon is a very Scottish word, so any difficulty with -judoon- sounds very suspect.
@arnothill the difficulty was that "oo" sounds usually caused Tennant to break into his natural, Scottish accent, while his Doctor has a British accent.
xD that is indeed a fun fact!
@@DavidB-2268 , that would make sense, if there were not very many instances in Scots language where “oo” were integral. “I’m awa' doon to fetch that coo the noo”. I speak as a Scot, ken?
I’m not trolling, I’m just puzzled.
I think Martha is, without a doubt, the most underrated, and the most competent companion out of all the doctor who series.
Martha is easily one of the best companions in my opinion. And her theme is hauntingly beautiful.
her theme is honestly stunning, one of my favourites
Amy is my personal favorite, but Rose is probably the best all around for most people. Martha is up there though. Clara is great but the writing for her was just not quite up to par. Actress is fantastic though, and she’s gorgeous. They all are but she’s essentially perfect IMO.
@@FyrecideI think Clara was brilliant. Admittedly she doesn't have a great start, I don't think she was very good in the Smith era, but as soon as Capaldi came along they started giving her much better material.
7:14 In my double-digit-amount of times I've rewatched this episode (and Doctor Who in general) over the years, somehow I've only just realised the joke with the consultant's name. His name is Mr. Stoker, which is a clear reference to Bram Stoker, the writer of Dracula, a blood-sucking monster, much like the antagonist of this episode
What’s great about this series is I get to experience it through your shows like it’s my first time watching it and I don’t have to put in as much of a time commitment, plus it’s great to fall asleep to and then come back and rewatch the next day
Oh thank you!! I appreciate that 💜
Martha faced a bit of a backlash when she was first introduced. Personally, I like her a lot, but I think Rose was so ridiculously popular that there was always going to be a section of the fanbase that would resent her successor, whoever they were.
On a separate note, if you ever saw the Netflix show, Sense8, you might also recognise Freema Agyeman from that.
I feel that Rose was a huge fan favourite and it would be hard for anyone to compete! Martha is awesome though. Smart and sassy!
@@julesreacts If you take Martha on her own merits, without letting yourself be swayed by nostalgia for Rose (and I'm confident that you can do that Jules), she's a terrific companion. Not my favorite (that one has yet to be seen), but like Davida, I do like her a lot.
Any worries about the new companion were immediately dispelled with Martha in this episode.
Billie Piper just had SO much chemistry with 1st Chris E and again with David T. They crackled together. It wasn't Freema's fault.
When I was a child of the 70s & 80s my mom watched soap operas (American) and they would do the replacement actor thing on a regular basis. So much so that it grew into an industry wide joke. So when I got into my own (different) shows, I was already used to new actors popping up on sometimes a weekly basis. I get attached too, but would never put hate out for the poor actor just trying to do the best they can.
Of course, this was a time when you had to use your actual brain power to write (and mail) physical letters, not just toss out a tweet like bad leftovers. Oh for the days of true, thought-out communication. But I digress. 😋
A fun little detail that I like about this episode is that the first victim of the alien blood drinker is a Mr.Stoker. You could say the most famous blood drinker of all was Dracula, which was a story written by.. Bram Stoker
22:14 "It's just so strange that she's back but playing a different character."
It's a fairly common practice on TV, although the appearences are usually spread out further than this. Brian Thompson played Luke and the Judge on _Buffy_ (he also played like 5 different characters on _Star Trek_ ), Carlos Jacott played both Ken on _Buffy_ and Richard on _Angel,_ and in a future episode of _Doctor Who_ there are two guest stars who will go on to play the Doctor's companion and the Doctor himself.
I will admit I've not watched a huge amount of TV shows, so this is kinda new to me! I like Martha though, she's lovely!!
It's especially common in Classic Doctor Who.
@@julesreacts In what might be called the first Christmas Special "The Chase" during the First Doctor's run the same actor played two unrelated characters in the same story. (To be fair they had very little budget back then)
Adjoa Andoh who plays Martha's mother also played a cat nurse in series 2
She does mention at one point as well that her cousin died that day, so they do acknowledge the likeness by saying they’re related!
Freema is so good, she keeps giving a serious and intense performance even when she’s being threatened by a rubbery rhino man, I love it
I love her.
She's amazing. I love her.
Some of her post Doctor Who work has been really good too...
"John Smith" is a name the third Doctor used to use in Classic Who when people asked for his name.
Which is why Sarah Jane makes the comment she does is School Reunion.
I think it's the same generic name, every British in fictional world usually use, when they don't want to reveal their true name😒😒😒
8:31 Glad you noticed that line, The Doctor always loves a little shop haha
That was one of the most adorable things EVER 😍
Something a lot of people miss is that Mr Stoker is named after Bran Stoker the guys name most known for Dracula plus he gets his blood drained by the Plasmavore.
Freema Agyeman plays Martha Jones here and Adeola from Army of Ghosts/Doomsday and while its not uncommon for a actor to play multiple roles in a series its usually never this close together unless theres a storyline reason. That neat little explanation to tie her characters together was nice. Another case is Martha's Mother who was also a Cat Nurse in Series 2 although that one is a little harder to tell since shes in heavy make up in her first appearance
Bram
I didn't know that about the actress who plays Martha's mother, but looking at her I 100% understand why someone would cast her as a cat. She has a very feline energy.
That’s a common misunderstanding. In fact, Adjoa Andoh wore very little makeup when playing Sister Jatt because she is, in fact, a cat (it was the cheaper makeup cost that got her that role). Having subsequently won the role of Francine Jones off Russell T Davies in a game of poker between scenes - RTD makes calls for dramatic reasons and has never grasped how poker actually works - she then required far more prosthetics to play Martha’s mother. And yet when I point this out to people they call me “deluded” and “insane”. It’s frankly more than a little insulting.
@@Y_Llew_Tew 😂
Martha Jones -- what a total boss! I LOVE her as a companion :D
This is a great series opener.
I love the Doctor being so flirty and winking at Martha while she's taking in his two heartbeats, and his going back in time to prove to Martha that he can time travel (going back to the start of the episode when he comes up to her, says something and walks away, and she's left standing there like 'what was that all about?')... it's so fun and funny. Welcome to Smith and Jones, Jules! 😉😄
Smith and Jones 💜 such a lovely introduction to them both! You're right, the Doctor is very flirty haha 😄 I do love his cheeky nature!
Have a lovely week, Sherry 💜
Just want to thank you for your reactions, I’m depressed and lonely at the moment and always look forward to your reactions. You are the kindest and sweetest person I’ve seen and your videos always brighten my day! Hope you had a great Christmas and have a great 2024
Sorry to hear about your situation. Hope things get better for you soon.
@@Neil_Hanson thank you I really appreciate it!
I'm so sorry that you're having a hard time right now, especially during the holiday period. It can't be easy 😔 I am glad that these episodes give you some comfort. I hope that 2024 is a much better year for you. Never give up. You never know what tomorrow will bring 💜
When i first watched this episode, i loved martha almost immediately. I love how well written she is and how dysfunctional her family is because unfortunately, some famlies in real life are like that and i love how realistic it is, the writing just feels.. natural, as it should be. Hope you enjoy the rest of the season Jules! ❤❤
Season 3 is a very strong season indeed. The entire production is clicking, and there are some fantastic episodes ahead.
The Judoon were a great new addition. They fit along side many of the classic Who "villains." Though I consider them more of a neutral force than an "evil" one.
22:00 That's right; she played the role of her own character's cousin in "Army of Ghosts," almost as a teaser about things to come. Martha mentioned Adeola; that was Adeola who worked and died at Canary Wharf. That little Easter-egg confused me as well for a few rounds, when I was still trying to sort the sequence of events of new-"Who" (I didn't have the luxury of seeing it in sequence originally). Now it makes sense to me.
The "cousin" that died at Canary Warf was written in to have a logical explanation of someone looking like her in that episode. Re-using actors in long running shows - especially older one - is not uncommon but they usually count for the viewers not to remember - it's nice they made the effort to give a logical explanation (and the episodes were very close together for people not to recognize her and the fact that Whovians pay very close attention to detail anyway 😉)
I loved that they had a logical explanation and they actually addressed it in the show!
I love Martha. Most educated and intelligent companion. A breath of fresh air. I hope I didn't spoil future Martha by revealing that she's educated and intelligent
Honestly, I have to agree! I think I say something similar in an intro/outro in the next episode (or so!). She definitely seems a great match for him!
You could make such an assessment from just this episode alone, so I wouldn't consider it a spoiler.
@Valdaur I got jumped for spoiling that Donna was snarky and sarcastic...AFTER the first episode...where she was mega snarky and sarcastic But then again, I should have remembered that you never say anything critical of Saint Donna or you'll be severely attacked and beaten by the Donbies (Donna zombies). You won't find a more wretched hive of slum and hilarity on Galifrine.
I mean, she's (almost) a medical doctor, I think educated and intelligent is somewhat implied.
@@johnrob3215 Why would you be talking about Donna after the first episode of the show, though? I'm not surprised you got jumped!
I find it crazy that the last 3 episodes have had 3 different people/companions. Hope you enjoy series 3!
Also great continuity point with the Tardis not being there to translate so the Judoon have to do it themselves.
Haha you're right, we've been through a lot of companions in a short time 🤣
ah i wish i could skip a couple days ahead for the next episode xD loving re-experiencing this with you, brings back so many memories!
Oh thank you so much 😊 ☺️
This is such a good introduction to a companion, definitely one of my favourites.
22:27 Indeed, there have been numerous actors returning as different characters across the history of the show (even a couple of the Doctors had made prior appearances before landing the star role). Sometimes they'll slip in a little reference like Martha's cousin to explain the similarity and sometimes it'll simply be ignored - 'tis probably mainly down to how recent and/or memorable the previous appearance was.
The Stig from Top Gear was cloned!
Have fun mapping names. IE Rose was Bad Wolf. Martha gets one. Donna gets one. Others you havent met yet do too. Seems most if not all female companions that stick around actually get titles or nicknames
I’ve watched your Doctor Who reactions over the last couple days and I’ve been LOVING it! Can’t wait for more :3
Thank you so much 😊💜
I must admit, when I first saw the adverts and promos for Martha, I was excited because I thought we were getting a companion from the future and not present day Earth. Boy was I wrong and disappointed. LOL
Martha isn’t the only instance of actors in minor roles being brought back later to play one of the leads. It seems to happen a lot in this show.
i love hearing you speculate about who may or may not come back. i wish i could post that "honey you got a big storm coming" gif on every one of your videos 😇
Ahhh I've got lots of surprises coming my way, I'm sure 🤣
The best thing about that reaction was your kitty's facial expression when you kissed his tiny bonce. Always a treat, thank you.
Ahhhh I'm so glad you noticed that part! He certainly wasn't looking happy, was he 🤣 it's a small price to pay for his bikkits!

Many blessings to you and yours.
Bradley, thank you so much for your support!! I appreciate you so very much 💜
I really feel that we are going in such an awesome direction right now with series 3! Martha seems like such a great companion and I can't wait to see more. It's been just wonderful so far 🤗
Thank you again, and I wish you all the best for the new year!
They acknowledge a lot of double casting - quite a few actors have played multiple roles across Doctor Who/Torchwood/Sarah Jane Smith Adventures, and usually they say theres a relation or reason at some point (not always). It still goes on, even in the new series there’s actors who appeared before as other characters.
in the classic series the doctor once had a time lady as a companion
Another recommendation for Torchwood reactions. Not essential but the crossovers are worth it and its a cool show.
I agree even though after Series 3 is probably best because most info around it and of course production/airing time makes it more fitting.
I hated Series 3 of Torchwood it dragged on and I already saw through everything, was a waste, and 4 I just dropped but 1&2 were good. Even if the Chibnal episodes were a bit weird. I also found the Love and Monsters getting the attention of Torchwood style episode with the guy that explains his story to be better than Love and Monsters was of a similar concept.
I guess Sarah Jane's Adventures started around School Reunion or was it later I haven't seen it.
You know, I'm only just finding it interesting that upon seeing Martha, the Doctor doesn't think...she looks familiar. Sure, Adeola wasn't a major character, but it's only been like a day or two at least since Doomsday
There are only like 5 actors in all of England, so they all have to double up as much as possible. In fact, almost all roles on the BBC are played by either Olivia Colman or Bill Nighy, though both are so masterful at their craft, and so adept at working with makeup and prosthetics and playing against type and gender, that very few people notice. In fact, David Tennant himself is actually a fictional character played by Colman, which makes Broadchurch an especially impressive feat on Colman's part.
Roy Marsden - We've seen him in "The Sandbaggers" (which really needs reacting to!)
And PD James character Commander Adam Dalgliesh in "The Black Tower" (We could see more TV mysteries as presented to us on PBS in then 80's and 90's.)
Quite an episode ain’t it? 1000 people abducted to the moon, slowly suffocating, and space rhinos troopers but yet the actual danger is an old woman armed with a straw.
This is such a great season opener. I hope you'll have a blast with this season, Jules.
I am soooo enamoured by this season already 🥰 it just makes me feel so happy!
her cousin was HER as another character in Army of Ghosts with the Cybermen.
Meet Martha Jones our new companion.
Personally not one of my favourites but she's okay.
The Judoon are a neat race they look pretty neat.
This season has quite a few good episodes, one of them particularly being a personal fave of mine.
The most important detail in this episode to remember is the reason why the Judoon moved the hospital to the moon.
It is illegal for the Judoon to operate on earth because it is a level 5 planet.
Also the Doctor had a big family. His brother i believe took a title to represent the family after the Doctor decided not to.
As I gazed up to observe the majesty of the night
sky, a purple vault fretted with a million points of
light, as the stars glistened like diamonds cast
amidst black velvet, I watched in awe as the
crescent moon ascended the horizon like an
amber chariot across the zenith of the heavens
toward the empty void of infinite space wherein the
tethered belts of Jupiter, Mars and Saturn, they
are forever festooned in their ultimate majesty.
And as I gazed up to observe this majestic sight, I
thought to myself, you know I really must put a roof on this lavatory.
Les Dawson.
When Martha said that her cousin was at Canary Wharf, I think that was meant to mean that her cousin and the character Freema Agyeman played in "Army of Ghosts" was the same character
Yes, that is correct! I spoke about that at the end :)
Awesome! I was literally watchin your reaction on 3x0. And Boom! New Video.
It’s so much fun to see your reactions to one my favorite shows! You take me back to when I first watched these as they aired and it’s just fantastic!
Ahh thank you so much 🥰
Martha Jones! I love her, she's brilliant and courageous.
In the episode Martha mentions that her cousin died when the cyberman and the daleks invaded. That is the excuse they made to have her play another role. i honestly like Martha
Yeah, I loved that they made it so believable!
Such a kind lady I’ve subbed 😊 this series has some of the best episodes, can’t wait for you to see. A two parter they have in a few episodes it’s soooo good
Oh thank you so much!! I'm so glad to have you here 💜
Very Excited!!
ME TOO 🥰🥰
I really love this episode a lot. I love the whole idea of teleporting the hospital as a means of isolation.
It was such a great concept!
Love Rose. But love Martha Jones too. She is awesome in her own way.
Finally, I'm all caught up! I've been loving your reactions so far; you seem to focus more on the emotional beats of the story than the more logical, analytical 'plot' stuff, which is also how I generally like to engage with media. So, I'm really enjoying your style!
I'm pretty sure the line about Martha's cousin was added specifically to explain the fact that Freema Agyeman plays both characters. It's not the first time an actor had a minor role and then went on to play a companion; Peter Purves appeared as a minor character in an episode back in 1965, then just a few episodes later returned as the new companion, Steven.
Oh, and the Doctor has indeed traveled with non-human companions. During the late 70s and early 80s, the Doctor had several non-human companions, plus a companion who was _descended_ from humans, but far enough in the future to be anatomically distinct from modern Homo Sapiens.
YAY! Congratulations on catching up! What a great way to start the new year hehe!
I very much love to focus more on the emotional storyline hehe 💜 I've never been very clued up with science sort of stuff, so a lot of that goes over my head sometimes. But people's feelings and possible romance? Love and hate? Sadness and joy? Bring it on 😻😻
I hope you have a most wonderful week ahead of you!!
I Absolutely adore Martha she's one of my top companions and series 3 is one of my favourites, I'm excited for you to watch her character grow!
Merry Christmas hope you are enjoying the series lots of greatess to come and beyond
Theres quite a few actors that play multiple characters,I won't say which ones for New Who because of spoilers, but in Classic who there was a minor character who not long later played the 6th doctor
As someone has nicked my comment about Davies teasing Tennant with the whole "oon" thing, I'll go for the casting instead. Yes, Freema Ageyman was in Army of Ghosts as Martha's cousin Adeola. This is just one example of recurring casting in the show. Going as far back as the Hartnell era, a young actor named Nicholas Courtney would play Space Agent (this was the 60's :P) Bret Vyon. Courtney would, of course, come back to play Colonel (later Brigadier) Lethbridge-Stewart, the founder of UNIT, in two Troughton era stories, most of the Pertwee era, and with sporadic appearances throughout the rest of the classic era. Before Colin Baker was the 6th Doctor, he was Maxil, Commander of the Gallifreyan guard in Arc of Infinity, where he shot his predecessor Peter Davison. :P Naoko Mori, who played the scientist studying the fake alien pig in Aliens of London, would go on to play Toshiko Sato in the first two seasons of Torchwood. An episode of the next season, I won't say which one, has both a future companion and a future Doctor.
The shot that shows where the hospital used to be in London near the London eye, there really is a hospital there, called St Thomas's It does not have that great big tower though
thus starts a new chapter with our new companion. you caught on to having seen Martha(well the actress anyway) before pretty quickly, it happens quite often on the show, reusing good actors and actresses. you've become a true Whovian! this season will bring a lot of interesting episodes, I'm curious to see if you catch on to something in the show, so I can't wait to see the rest of your reactions! love this one as always Jules!
Thank you so much, Charlie 😊😊 I usually have a poor memory for faces, but I was sure I'd seen her somewhere before 🤣 She must have definitely made an impression to be back so soon!
Yes, they didn't realize they were going to have her as companion (it might have been interesting if they had; they could have named the character Martha Jones and have her survive Canary Wharf, and then she would be mourning her boyfriend too).
Yes, the Doctor has had nonhuman companions. One I know of, a Time Lady named Romana.
: Martha Kent (superman mom),Martha Wayne,( mom Batman ) & now Martha Jones , companion Dr Who
"Planet Zofirax?" There was a cold sore cream advert where the motor cycle courier wouldn't take their helmet off until the last few seconds of the advert where it revealed to be a pretty woman.
17:50 THIS! The moment I was already so excited about two episodes ago (but could not tell you why) - Martha Jones enters the Tardis 🤩
The Doctor had a small number of alien companions during the classic era, but they pretty much all looked human! 🙄
This episode is an under-rated gem in my book. Bonkers fun, and a great way to introduce a new companion. Assuming that she gets more than just one trip in the Tardis, of course. 🤔
awww, you're so sweet. "they need medical help" LOL
🤣🤣
Structurally, I think this remains my favourite companion introduction.
Traditionally at least, the role of the companion in Doctor Who has been to ask questions (to help educate the audience about what's going on), to get captured, to run away, to get captured again, to ask some more questions, and to represent us as an audience proxy - they are our eyes into the show. As such, they have almost always been humans, given that the audience of the show are (mostly?) human. There was in fact only 6 non human companions (plus a robot dog, and maybe another robot depending on your viewpoint), and that included the Doctor's own granddaughter who we now assume to have been a Time Lord/Lady.
What the original series did do a lot of however, was to give us non-contemporary human companions. One of the best companions ever was a Scottish lad named Jamie, who came from the 1700's. Or Vicki, who was from the 25th century (and for example, considered the Beatles to be 'classical music'). I.... Ahh, spoilers. Wont comment further.
Fantastic first episode, I love how RTD (the current showrunner here) writes great introductions to the new companion, you instantly get the Family dynamic, understand the Doctor, and serviceable alien plot. You get all the fundamentals and a story perfect for new viewers to jump on. Loved the reaction!
Pity he is screwing up so badly with the current day run
@@overfiend1978 I didn't like the 60th stuff but the latest episode was fun. Let's not talk about future things though. Spoilers aren't good heh
A companion for the Doctor that is a doctor, and a beautiful one at that. It's amazing how there is so many Smiths and Jones there are. LOL Good catch to notice Freema Agyeman was in "Army of Ghosts". Later on there are other actors that do appear in other episodes, but they appear so different you really cannot recognize them.
Awesome video as always dude! youre in for some good stuff this season!

i love series three!! ive always loved martha a lot, shes very smart and sensible
Very lucky to meet David and Freema when they were filming this season. The episode Blink was filmed partially in my husband’s shop. Got great photos!
Oh wow.... 😍😍 that's amazing!
@@julesreacts Yes he was lovely. ☺️
Doctor Who has a history of re-using the same actor as a different character. For example, Colin Baker who played the Sixth Doctor for several years had previously appeared as a minor character in an episode.
I hope you are keeping an eye out for the "thread".
RTD tried to keep one up for each year.
For example, Badwolf was said several times throughout before the reveal.
Same with Torchwood.
So pay attention!
It's only episode 1 🤣 But yes, I think I know what is the theme this season as I'm a few episodes ahead!
Love your reactions jules, series three is a corker. Looking forward to sharing it with you.

Hello, Jules.💜 Very nice headband!😊
Let's see how you and Miss Jones get on. And wow! The patreon parties must really rock!🤭🤐
Yes! So very very disappointing when you say Season, in place of Series - they don't even sound alike! Fan(atic)s are just hilarious. If no one knew Exactly what you meant then there would be no reason to "correct", and, oddly enough, since they know exactly what you mean, there is, again, no reason to correct
4:29 - pure amazing wonderment!😍 Having a Doctor Who moment!
He does like a little shop!
15:47 - oh, if only the SN forces had such a strict dedication to rules as the Judoon!😅
I have the same thought, every time I watch this episode, especially since it is so close to Rose's seasons. Martha's family here, makes Rose's seem very normal. Although I am familiar with all the back and forth between siblings about other family members.
Congratulations once again, for figuring out Martha was speaking of her cousin who died in the Canary wharf incident - so many seemed to have missed the facts as you presented them in the outro, but well done. You always mention your very poor memory, but, once again, prove that you have excellent recall for incidents, and faces from past pieces and episodes in gaming and reactions. Well Done!
(Oops! My bad! The previous paragraph is, I guess, technically a spoiler, for all who haven't bothered to actually watch your video, in its entirety. Apologies!)
And that tender moment? Well tender it appeared until the very last... the eye popping open, as if to say - "Wait! You're taping this?!?"🤣 Nicely done.😂
Jules🤗💜 have a wonderful day, and give the furry guy a treat!🥰
Tom 💜😊
Hahaha you noticed my own companion at the end looking none too pleased 🤣 I promise you, he usually enjoys kisses! Well, I say that but I have to admit I can't see their face when I kiss them, sooooo maybe he's been hating it from the beginning! To be fair, he is pretty smelly, so it should be ME making that expression! BAH!
OOOHHH A LITTLE SHOP!!! It's those moments that make me so excited! A throwaway remark from many episodes ago comes back into play and he gets his little shop. Happy days 💜
I knew I'd seen Martha before, but I would never have thought they'd reuse an actor so soon and in such a feature role, too. Watching Buffy, Angel, X Files and now Who, I am greeted by a carousel of actors each week that sometimes it's hard to keep track of where I might have seen one previously 🤣
Tom, you do make me smile! Thank you 😊😊 I hope you have a most wonderful day. It's an absolute scorcher here. NOT GOOD 🤣
Yes, Jules. i wish I could send some cooler air your way. I see it is to be quite scorching for a few more days. Try and stay cool.
My afternoon coffee might have to be an iced one today, Mr Tom! Actually.... that might be a lovely treat! I'll try not to think with envy of you in your layers and feeling cosy and snug 😭😭
19:14 KITTY!

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays Martha's sister, Trish, starred in _Belle,_ which would be a good movie for you to react to if you haven't yet, and _Fast Color,_ which, same.
This is my favourite series opener. Usually when we’re introducing a new companion we need the plot to be relatively straight forward so the companion can shine. But I think this is an example of a plot that still feels quite big and doctor whoey whilst allowing Martha to shine, it gets the balance perfect
Freema agyeman and Mary tamm, best companions ever imo. Also if you haven't already then you should watch torchwood for the full cyber story of that who era
Ah I've mentioned a couple of episodes ago about Torchwood in the intro. I don't have time for another reaction right now, I'm afraid!
Hey Jules! Loved this episode!! 🤗🤗💖💖
Thank you 😊 💓
This isn't the first time that Doctor Who has reused actors and it definitely isn't the last, it's very fun to see a familiar face.
I was like "Why are you suprised you are in Series 3?" Then I just realised that most American TV show usually have 22 episodes for 1 season, huhu
Yeah, for sure! It's going too quickly 😭
"Welcome aboard, Miss Jones!"
And welcome to Season Three, Miss Jules. Coincidentally, we just had this year's Christmas special, which introduced a new Doctor and companion, and now here you are meeting your own new companion.
Martha's definitely underrated among New Who companions, but I think most people agree that she's great. I've actually met her and she's so nice and friendly in real life. She's a lot shorter than you'd think though. Apparently she had to wear insane high heels so the height difference between her and David Tennant wouldn't be noticeable, but having to run in them caused damage to her body, so she had to stop wearing them.
I think this is a really nice episode and a really nice way to introduce a new companion, especially with that fun little bit of time travel shenanigans. The Judoon are pretty distinctive, and are a good example of Russell T. Davies' tendency to base aliens on animals.
This episode also has a subtle clue to this season's arc, but of course the biggest introduction in this episode is the Doctor's new blue suit. I much prefer the brown one, but the blue is certainly distinctive.
As for casting, trust me, you'll see a lot of actors playing multiple characters in this show, especially in the classic era. You have to remember, that was a time before home media or even repeats, so it really didn't matter if actors kept showing up in different roles. There was at least one Doctor and two companions in the classic series who had previously played other characters in the show, as well as a companion who came BACK as another character. In New Who you'll see a Doctor and at least one more companion appearing as different characters before being cast in their main roles.
I can't wait to see what you think of this season! Happy Who Year!
If you’re wondering about if the doctor has had any non human companions he did mention K9 was his companion in the classic series. Although I doubt he was as energetic as our usual companions 😂
Glad you're on series 3 🥰 still loving these videos it's like being back watching it for the first time again ☺️💖
I also recommend watching Torchwood Season 1 but it's not essential to viewing series 3 of Doctor Who, it just all bleeds into the same living and breathing universe
I wish I could watch this for the first time again!! ❤❤❤
a Companion with expertise of their own was so refreshing (and is still)
I love Martha’s theme soo much
Fun reactions from Jules, to this excellent introduction to Martha Jones.
And the Modern Who adventure, continues! :)
Thank you, Kieron 😊😊
I can't wait for your reviews as the series 3 and 4 are my faves
"Not anymore." I love the little reference to the Doctor's brother, Braxiatel, who actually was only introduced in the audio plays, but which the BBC confirmed are canon. He was a fun character. More of a traditionalist than his brother the renegade, but less so than other Time Lords out there. As far as I know, they never really came face-to-face since the Doctor fled Gallifrey with his granddaughter, but he has had many adventures with friends of the Doctor, like a Classic companion named Romana. (who was a Time Lady)
And at the end, the part that so many people forget while they're busy getting mad at the Doctor (for what I won't say, spoilers and all). The Doctor told her no, and to stop it. The end.
I do love these little snippets of information 💜
You’re spot on about her being in a previous episode. But they used the cousin backstory so we’d just assume the cousins look alike and go with it. Even though we know it was her, the story works.
Not really a spoiler here, but there will be 2 others that pop up in later episodes but one is hard to recognize due to makeup.
Mixed thoughts on Jackie? She is the best
I love Jackie, too!
Judoon seem like the stereotype of a rough, old policeman. 😅 I can't decide if I like them yet or not. But I like to be able to see Daft Punk again for once. They don't make music anymore.... 😔
Great reaction! And yeah, Doctor Who loves recasting the same actors in multiple roles lol
I'll have to be on the lookout for more!
Smith and Jones, Smith and Jones!
