    pH is everything. With a lower pH you need less to shock because the chlorine is working harder. Having a super high chlorine reading won’t mean anything if your pH is an 8.4 for example

    My pool was green the entire summer and I discover the city water PH was 8.0 plus when i kept having trouble with my aquariums also. So no amount of chemicals were helping my pool or aquarium because after adding chemicals no was still topping off my water levels with the same city water which was raising the PH of my pool and aquarium after I thought everything was balanced. Iv been out of $1000s from May until now and I’m heartbroken.

      I’ve had nothing but trouble with my pool….3summers I’ve had it and this one has far been the worst 😢

      @@michellepeek773 I’ve had a pool for 25 yrs and this has been the worst summer and most expensive. Never have I ever had to spend so much in a pool. I’ve never ever had to buy ph down before or this much stabilizer or shock. This is the first time we never used our pool al summer due to algae. At least now we know to check the city water first now.

      I have had chronic algae problems all summer . I have been pouring $$$ into the pool like crazy . “Yellow out” appears to be the only thing that makes my pool blue but then it is so cloudy . Last weekend after using yellow out on my pool was blue until a bunch of kids stirred it up and it turned green and extremely cloudy again . Should I go through the yellow out process again before deflocking it ? I triple shocked it last night but it was still green this morning

    So how do you adjust your ph and alkalinity without first shocking the water since it’s green. I’m sure testing that water when it’s green won’t give you the proper readings

    What about adding Borax?

    • @SwimUniversity
      @SwimUniversity  Місяць тому

      Borax can be used to raise pH and can also be mixed with water to form a paste to be used to clean slippery spots or some stains in your pool

    So many people are using the Pool Rx does it really help, since copper turns water green ? If so, is it ok to use the pool RX when you have well water?

    • @SwimUniversity
      @SwimUniversity  4 місяці тому

      Sadly it's not a good idea to use it if you already have metal content in the water

    Thank you for the video! Just subscribed. Does non-stabilized shock cloud the water due to higher calcium in the shock? If so, how do you clear it?

    • @SwimUniversity
      @SwimUniversity  4 місяці тому +1

      It's usually the dead algae that's clouding the water. You can use a clarifier or flocculant to get rid of it.

    I've been adding algaecide 4 oz every 2 weeks and it never turns green . But I always keep my cartridge filter cleaned every week.

      That's great to hear! Algaecide is a good preventative (06:40)

    Thanks for the video. I have had to floc my pool 3 times this summer and I have no idea why it continues to grow algae spores. I run the filter for 8 hours a day and my chemicals are all good. I am ready to close my pool for the summer. Ugh

      This has been a really tough algae summer for everyone. Have you tried things mentioned at the end of the video, like a mineral supplement, an algaecide, or a phosphate remover?

    This is our first year with a pool. It's a small 14ft pool but it's driving me crazy. I bought test strips and my water is too hard, ph is too high, alkalinity is too high, cyanuric acid is non existent even though I use stabilized chlorine. Finally after adding what seems like a massive amount of chemicals my ph is on the higher end of normal and I have enough chlorine. However, the alkalinity is still high and I have no idea what to do about the hard water. When I try to search for that it pulls up stuff for spas or an increaser. I'm really overwhelmed. I don't even know if the brand I'm using is good or not.

      I would fight one battle at a time. First start off by fixing your alkalinity by using alkalinity decreaser. Then recheck to make sure it’s in the right range. Then balance your ph using muriatic acid to lower the ph in the right level. Then you can start worrying a out your chlroine levels and cya. Make sure also that your calcium level is in check

      Someone already left a great reply. Start with one thing at a time in that order. Make sure you're using a hose filter when filling your pool with well water.

    • @CrypticHack3r
      @CrypticHack3r 3 місяці тому

      Again if the water is green already and you have to fix alkalinity first don’t you want to shock the water first get the algae through the filter and then fix these others elements then you can re shock and make sure the calcium level is good?

      @@SwimUniversity Thanks for the reply, for me it felt like the opposite of what you said here.. Phosphate remover starved the algae, thereby killing it and seems to have drastically reduced the amount of chlorine, shock, etc I had to put in the pool before

    All your 5 are the text book ones. But in my area and in my pool, you will 1st, raise pH to 8, 2nd add Green Out, which is ammonium sulfate, 3rd, double shock. I think green algae becomes vulnerable at pH 8, so your advice about getting pH balanced first, is not going to work.

    • @SwimUniversity
      @SwimUniversity  4 місяці тому

      Interesting, what made you decide to raise the pH? Algae actually cause pH to rise as it absorbs carbon dioxide during the day. And certain shocks, like cal-hypo shock, can raise it too.

    i had a algae problem this summer for the first time in 4 years...my issue was i wasn't paying attention to my chlorine puck floater and it was empty for over a week or so.
    getting rid of it was challenge but eventually what worked for me was a double dose of shock, then clarifier to clump the algae to the ground and a lot of vacuum to waste over the next couple weeks and a lot of sand filter flushing. also skimmer socks helped a lot to catch the fine particles.
    was a lot of work but eventually i got it all out.

    • @SwimUniversity

      Prevention is key (like a filled chlorine floater!), but glad you got it fixed
