- KLM has been forced to ground a substantial amount of its E195-E2 fleet following Pratt and Whitney's continued global engine crisis. They now join a long list of airlines impacted by such a shortage. As a result, the airline will now need to adjust schedules, leases for aircraft and much more.

they’re dropping like flies at this point 😂
I work for Pratt and will speak as a fan of channel , not an employee due to Company private etc. So pre COVID, GTF development was rough on the hardware, and that goes along with accelerated development. Now, remember how P&W in the 90’s and 2000’s laid everyone off and had vendors start making more and more and more. Now P&W does not have the human side of things or the machines to do it anymore and they are now so stuck with what they get based on supplier schedules. That is the root, the pandemic just brought it out. You can’t train a good engineer or a great machinist in five years. Now the higher time early block gtf’s are worn out, GE and LEAP will be there too, we all buy from the same suppliers.
I think they (GE) managed the talent better which leads to better strategy in business, better PR.
@@afterburner119 Is there evidence to support GE managing talent better ?
@@danharold3087 for starters, no airline operating GE engines has ever had to cease operation because of anything engine-related 🤔
This version of the P&W Geared Turbofan suffers from higher than expected wearing out unlike the problems faced with the versions used exclusively for A220 or as an option for the A320neo. Therefore I’m surprised this grounding of E2’s didn’t happen sooner knowing how quickly it wears out even if doesn’t have the other troubles
This has been happening for quite some time now. Yesterday only 7 of the 15 planes at KL-C operated a commercial flight.
Three of the planes have been grounded for about five months . The solution is not only software related.
Wow. Luckily I had the opportunity to fly KLM's E195-E2 last summer from AMS-LHR. I thought the PW engines sounded pretty good.
they sound good, they look nice, and are maybe slightly more efficient than the LEAP, and that's about all that's good about them - the LEAP (and pretty much any other engine in its class) is superior
This reminds me a lot of Pratt & Whitney JT9D front fan issues on the 747-100 between 1970 and 1972.
Let's also not forget that they are to blame for UA328, UA1775, and the related 777 grounding that lasted from 2021-2022.
@@Blank00 That was actually kind of unique because relative few airlines besides United ordered the early production 777-200 models with the PW4077 engine.
@@Blank00 let's not forget that P&W fan blades on JL904 broke off in flight, too, on December 4, 2020
@@rafaelwilks yep, PW is culpable for that too
Birds chirping in background is quite appropriate in these videos
Maybe the A220 family and Embraer E2 should of had a second engine supplier
It’s not that simple, you can’t just bolt any old engine on a plane without serious changes to the design
@@rocketpoweredf1402 and certification.
Both planes were designed specifically to use this engine.
It would have been awesome if the Embraer E2 had GE's CF34 replacement (the NG34), but GE couldn't quite make a business case for it. If they had gone through with the NG34, any teething troubles would have invariably been almost nothing.
Thank you for sharing the news of this.
You made me laugh aboutvthe bird noise. The birds here in Chicago, Illinois- USA is the same in the morning here. Yes, the birds are awake in the early mornings as well.
I'm watching this Aviation Video Topic on KLM Grounding there Embraer E195-E2 Jets due to the Pratt and Whitney Engine Problems there facing with both Airplane Makers across the Globe I hope they'll pulled through soon my prayers goes out to them 100% Awesome Video DJ'S Aviation keep going man nuff respect to all your Videos on Aviation and Travel Dream Big on Aviation man 100%
I think Embraber E2 series is the best regional flight to operate in Big countries like USA , Canada , European countries and also India
Don’t build an airplane with one engine supplier
Well hopefully I'm not screwed, supposed to fly one to Amsterdam on Sunday.
Good luck!
if you get an E190 with GE engines, your flight will be just fine
Who would’ve guessed clicking on this video it would be the newest aircraft in the fleet… not me
Was pretty easy to guess with all the PW engine issues.
Why NOT???? New tech is demanded and more efficiency and this is the price you pay and add in the pandemic and factory shut downs. new engines take time to develop. People wanted more "efficiency" and they got it.....at a horrible price.....enjoy the ride !!! !
@@johniii8147 Its a computer software update on this one !!! ! DUUUUHHH!!!!!!
Oh no!
These why be one of many reasons airlines still opted for A320neo family; engines availability
I think they need to get rid of the slogan “dependable engines”; they had a similar issue with the first few 747s ever built.
Dependable Engines 🤣🤣🤣
Five uses of the word "Impact" or a derivative thereof but on the bright side, only one use of the word "Utilize".
People need to understand that the quest for efficiency and lower cleaner burning engines comes at a HIGH cost. The auto industry has experienced this, as has the trucking industry and the airline industry. This quest to squeeze the extra little mileage means more expensive, complicated systems that have to have the bugs worked out. Then throw in the pandemic and shut down companies not producing parts and now we have these expensive, technical, complicated engines that few can work on. People need to be aware of you need to be careful what you hope for !! !
That’s why I believe we will just have to switch fuel type eventually but make sure the engines made before are compatible
So are you saying we should stop developing new technology overall?
You don't quite understand that the quest for efficiency and lower cleaner burning engines doesn't always at a HIGH cost. The plain and simple fact is, the CFM LEAP is far better than the Geared Turbofan, and the GEnx is another new engine program that has proven to be highly reliable - more reliable, in fact, than older, previous, "proven" technology. Facts are stubborn things.
Will Porter have these problems also
Not yet, Porter's E2s are newer but come 2024, if this issue isn't fixed, well they'll be parked.
Ok thanks they are nice looking planes
Another good video, DJ. No probs with the birds after all it's mating season. Cheers!
Not sure why KLC would be wet leasing older E190’s. It’s much more likely to be a dry lease as KLC already operate the aircraft.Any wet leases are more likely to be for aircraft or aircraft types on in the KLC fleet.
I don't think DJ underdands the difference between wet and dry leasing.
Dry leases tend to be an alternative to buying and for a longer term, whereas wet leasing tends to be to get you over shorter term difficulties or seasonal requirements.
South African Air Link are in trouble all their fleet is Embraer
exactly. Air peace in Nigeria also has lots of embraer
This doesn’t affect them because they don’t use the E195E2
It's a really good plane, it's superior (in terms of the airframe) in every way to the E190/E195 it replaces, but the E2's Achilles heel is its engines - the worst engines in the West. If it were powered with GE engines, all this major engine trouble would literally never have happened. Basically, the E2 is an unusually good airframe powered with unusually bad engines. Here come the wet-leased first-generation E195's with good old GE technology to the rescue 😁
Pratt and Whitney should be held accountable. Probably lawsuits or sanctions by aviation regulators.
WHY???? Did PW cause the Pandemic??? Did they voluntarily shut down plants NO !!!HELL NO!!! Governments close work places and parts were not made and workers were let go and found work else where. and it has been demanded that these engines be more efficient ...and complicated, computer controlled, be careful of what you ask for and be willing to suffer the consequences !!!
Suggest reading what AfterBurner119 wrote. If your going to sue P&W you your opening up a lot of other companies to similar action.
P&W is already scared after Go First filed a lawsuit against it. P&W is trying to take action against it legally for obvious reasons. But now they are at a higher risk of reputational loss.
Boeing and United suffered additional dents in their reputation in 2021 when UA328 happened and some 777s got grounded. However, unlike the MAX crashes which Boeing is to blame for and puppygate which United is to blame for, PW is to blame for UA328 and the 777 grounding, and yet Boeing and United took the reputational dents. Boeing and United deserve a chance to bite PW where it hurts.
@ayushghosh1155 Not only are they scared, but they will also have little if no room to delay their liability by, for example, offering discounts on future purchases of aircraft or services.
In the case of them causing an operator to fail, it will be creditors chasing them. They will demand compensation in full and without delay for the simple reason that they have no interest in maintaining or enhancing any future relationship with P&W.
If something like this happened to Qantas, the Australian aviation sector will collapse.
don’t jinx it
Delete the comment. Please do not jinx it 😟
Please don't jinx it
Is it just me or this situation is worst then the Trent 1000 grounding? P&W needs to do better.
It's definitely worse than the Trent 1000, because at least the Trent 1000, as bad as it was, never caused any airline to cease operations on account of its unreliability.
surprisingly the full service flag carrier of Netherlands doesn't offer first class on any of it's flights . . . business & economy class only, over the years KLM introduced premium economy class . . .
Many airlines don't offer First Class, in the near future, all US Carriers won't have First Class.
Nothing surprising about it. Not much of market for true F out of AMS. It's not a very premium market.
First 🤔
Indeed 🥇
