The “ machine “ represents the world and how you become a working part of it. You are just another working part. The song says you didn’t like school but wait until you get pushed out into the real world. You realize how hard life is and if you let it absorb you you feel that you become an insignificant speck in the big picture of life.
What I love about this song and "Have A Cigar" is that they feel so ahead of the curve, to have songs that so explicitly use lyrics to shine a light on how the music industry chews up and spits out young artists, fatcats preying on the naive to line their own pockets. Have A Cigar is sleazy and bluesy sounding, but this is so cold and artificial it's chilling.
A lot of Floyd songs might sound as if they have an unusual start and finish but this is often because the song then goes into the following track. For Example on the 'Wish You Were Here album' the 3rd song 'Have A Cigar' ends with the sound of the song sounding like its on a radio and is then tuned out as if searching for another track until it becomes the intro to the album's 4th song the classic 'Wish You Were Here'
Once you start listening to Pink Floyd you’re going to be hooked, not to mention your views will increase quite a bit. I myself enjoy going through UA-cam videos of people discovering the Floyd for the first time. Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals are three full albums you should do, but in one sitting each. You’re going to think that’s a long time, but it’ll go by before you know it. Songs from Wish You Were Here and Meddle. With Pink Floyd you have a ton of material to go through. Hope to see more Floyd.
There is a common theme through out Pink Floyd's albums. Rodger Waters who wrote the songs,, Was signing about two people.. First his father who was killed during WWII and Syd Barett, who along with Rodger started Pink Floyd.. He ended up taking too much LSD and literally broke his mind. So the lyrics about the steak and the Jaguar are referring to Syd. The guy laying on the hood of the Jag is Syd before he went crazy,.
Specifically, most of Pink Floyd's earlier songs were written about Sid Barrett (hence the pics in the video). I won't go into alot of details, you can reference the story of Pink Floyd's beginning for a reliable source if you like. Sid was the "machine" from the start as a song writer for the band, but unfortunately he had serious issues with psychedelic drug use and schizophrenia. The band dismissed him because he became more and more unreliable due to his drug use and other issues. So many of Pink Floyd's songs are about Sid's experience. Thanks for the post guys, this song is one of my favorites. ツ
Welcome to the rabbit hole. He's got one foot in, grab her and go for it. More Pink Floyd, Tool, Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Alice In Chains...god there's a world of music I want you to hear.
That's an interesting second choince of Floyd to go right after Echoes. Two worlds apart really. I would suggest you to try the entire Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite from this very same album, if you want to go into another 20 minute trip. I suppose you already know the short and sweet song that titles the album, Wish You Were Here, as it's a timeless anthem most people have heard even if they don't know who it's by; if you don't though, it's a must. Then again, you'll have a hard time choosing a Floyd song and choosing poorly. Enjoy the ride!
Definitely check out Pigs by Pink Floyd - it’s one of their harder rocking ones. Can also recommend Dogs, Sheep as well - any song from Animals can stand on its own without necessarily needing the rest of the album for context, which can be a bit of a hindrance when checking out individual Floyd songs (especially with The Wall which is a story album from front to back). Songs like Comfortably Numb take on a completely different meaning once you understand it’s place in the story the album tells, but as individual tracks on their own they can be slightly confusing lyrically & musically
If y'all like really experimental and psychedelic music like this I recommend that you two should check out the songs Pharaohs Dance or Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. It's jazz so it's completely different then these songs but when it comes to psychedelia it's everything you would want. I usually don't like jazz but this is an exception at least for me.
Machine is the music industry and a rising musician... this flows into the next song on the album "Have a Cigar". Pink Floyd are all about album concepts. Its hard to appreciate the meaning of their songs without listening to their album in one go because its out of context. I would suggest just doing a quick wiki search on the song your going to do to get some context on it. I highly recommend Dogs if you want your face melted by amazing solos
If you guys haven't already, look into pink floyd's history; emphasis Sid Barrett. There are plenty of documentaries on youtube about it. There is an ongoing lament in their music for Sid, the cost of the drugs/rock and roll lifestyle, and having to move on without him; "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon." Hard to pick single songs to recommend, shine on you crazy diamond for sure. The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon are both fantastic in their entirety, great for discovering pink floyd. The Wall movie is great too, especially for visualising the story (adult themes/content.) Keep up the good work you guys.
If you really want your mind blown, my suggestion is the song several species of small furry animals gathering together in a cave and grooving with a pict. Off the Ummagumma album.

The next song on that album following "Welcome to the Machine" is called "Have a Cigar" which is very funky in comparison but a great tune none the less you'll both likely enjoy it too. If you're looking for something more longer then "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" from the same album is another great song.
Like most Floyd songs, it has more than one meaning. It's specifically about the music industry but it also speaks to the 'everyman', where it's about work and society in general. Most Floyd songs have both specific and general meanings.
Pink Floyd is one of those bands that are meant to be listened to by the whole album from start to finish. Yes you can listen to one song at a time, but you will not get the full effect of the concept of it. I agree with Scott Crosby, you really need to listen to Shine on you crazy diamond. GREAT SONG. Very long intro to it, but well worth it. It will make you reflect on your life.
Great reactions! Pink Floyd is an amazing band, ahead of their time...which probably hasn't even come yet! Wish You Were Here was a tribute / mourning for their bandmate Sid, who mentally broke down and had to leave the band. It should be listened to as a whole but at least one complete side at at time Same with the albums Dark Side of the Moon, and Animals.
The album this is from, "Wish You Were Here", is largely inspired by founding member and main creative force Syd Barrett, who left the band after their second album , becoming increasingly mentally unstable. The reasons for that are somewhat complicated, including drug use and latent mental illness. But this track specifically addresses the deleterious effects that the pressures of the music industry and pop stardom had on him. Other tracks on the album are more like the band's tributes to him, mourning the loss of their friend and creative partner. Look up the story of Syd showing up at the studio during the recording of this album. It's almost unbelievable and heartbreakingly sad. That sense of melancholy, sadness and loss are really at the emotional center of this album.
Yeah I have been hearing a lot about doing Full Album listens. Ill have to do that. I will break up the videos Ill release like one video each day. Ill likely get around to doing that kinda soon.
Just to help you guys out on the lyrics, this song (and pretty much the entire album) is about former band member Syd Barrett, who couldn't cope with the stress of fame and the mechanical nature of the music industry (commercial music production). As a result, he fell into drug addiction and mental illness. He became impossible to work with and the band was forced to dump him.
I thought it was a space ship taking off when I first heard it. I was stoned at the time though. It was allowed I was about 19. I think I appreciate it more now.
Syd Barrett. That whole album is about him. Look him up. It brings that song and album into perspective. Also, i recommend "Childhood's End" off of Obscured by the Clouds album. Very underrated Pink Floyd in my book.
Listen to the advice you will get from the many Floyd fans. Many have been listening to this band for over fifty years an a lot of them will tell you to listen to entire albums, not single songs. They are right.
Not gonna lie, I thought I was gonna get some entertaining reaction out of the synthesizer that follows the guitar part. Still, it's always satisfying to see people getting introduced to Pink Floyd.
The Machine, in my mind is life, from the lowliest ditch digger to President of the US, we are all Money generators. And every Machine needs a generator.
Little Feat. Spanish moon. From the album waiting for colombus. You'll never be the same again & you might just thank me. The entire record is great. Little Feat are the best band nobody (except other musicians) has ever heard of.
New subscriber here and I gotta say that was a great reaction. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend you listen to each pink Floyd album in one sitting. Themes and songs on each album flow in to each other and you would be doing a great disservice to yourself if you listened to songs individually. Start with Dark Side Of The Moon, then Wish You Were Here, after that, Animals and finally, The Wall. All classics for a reason!
Okay. Sounds like a great idea. ill try to listen to the full DSOM album. But I will release the song reactions individually in youtube. That way im not uploading an hour long video.
Have to do the entirety of the Wall from start to finish. And have those lyrics up then try and find the story. Do some of the other songs first but don't touch the wall until later. Just my suggestion. Kinda like go by album release
Great reaction. Dogs is their best song in my opinion. It's a real trip. But look up what the song is about before going on this journey. And it's always good to have the lyrics up for your viewers to see.
Thank you for the suggestion and input. We have since started showing the lyrics on screen. And I will definitely look into the song meaning of Dogs before I listen to it :)
65 yo and I'm from Louisiana also, Mandeville to be exact. Suggestion: get some headphones, not that Beats crap, when listening to music from back in the day. You'll grow an appreciation for the way the music was mixed to fully take advantage of STEREO. Try anything from the first 2 Black Sabbath albums "Black Sabbath" & "Paranoid", classics from the very first metal band. My faves for starters are "Fairies Wear Boots" and "War Pigs". Enjoy exploring the next rabbit hole. Geaux Tigahs/Who Dat.
Good reaction! My suggestion for next would be "Time". It's a little more straightforward than a lot of their stuff, both musically and lyrically. I'd also recommend "Comfortably Numb", even if it's just for the lead guitar work. When guitar magazines have polls for the greatest lead guitar songs of all time, it usually makes the top ten. As others have said, PF made albums much more than they made individual songs, and most of their stuff is even better in the context of the entire album. Which is a pretty big commitment, sitting down to listen to an entire album start to finish. "The Wall" is a double length album that tells a story, and lyrically, "Comfortably Numb" is a little hard to get when it's removed from that context. But musically, it's still awesome.
For classic rock, particularly Floyd, you really need some decent over-ear headphones or, even better, some half decent, well amplified speakers. You'll miss so much with earbuds or crappy speakers. :)
If you listen to Shine On You Crazy Diamond individually, listen to the full 25 minute video. Unless you do the album reaction which contains both songs.
Dont´t be unfair; they were born 25 years after this record was released, and they are "reacting" to something they´d never heard before. Give them time, they´re on the right track. Like these kids very much!

She's got it! Yea baby, she's got it. She caught a fleeting glimpse, out of the corner of her eye! I guess she is not numb - yet. The sound in the end is the sound of the signal that told the workers in the factory that their shift was over for the day...
Machine is the music industry. And the music industry is trying to lure the young musician into it's trap.
The “ machine “ represents the world and how you become a working part of it. You are just another working part. The song says you didn’t like school but wait until you get pushed out into the real world. You realize how hard life is and if you let it absorb you you feel that you become an insignificant speck in the big picture of life.
Love to watch "kids" get into the music I heard as a kid as well. We were totally amazed by this when we first heard it.
After hearing Floyd for first, time it was seared into my memory. Not the same since. Great to see new generation appreciate it. Thanks
No matter in what year you listen to this song, 2000s, 3000s or 4000s, this song will always seem to be a song from the future.
Songs like Comfortably Numb take on a completely different meaning once you understand it’s place in the story the album tells, but as individual tracks on their own they can be slightly confusing lyrically & musically
welcome to the machine is like the future so far !
Listen to the live version of Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree. If you like Pink Floyd you will absolutely love it. Don't let the length throw you off.
Rip Syd Barrett and Richard Wright
If you guys haven't already, look into pink floyd's history; emphasis Sid Barrett. There are plenty of documentaries on youtube about it. There is an ongoing lament in their music for Sid, the cost of the drugs/rock and roll lifestyle, and having to move on without him; "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon."
Hard to pick single songs to recommend, shine on you crazy diamond for sure. The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon are both fantastic in their entirety, great for discovering pink floyd. The Wall movie is great too, especially for visualising the story (adult themes/content.)
Keep up the good work you guys.
THE MACHINE IS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY BROTHER.
If you really want your mind blown, my suggestion is the song several species of small furry animals gathering together in a cave and grooving with a pict. Off the Ummagumma album.
No.
Those poor children. They don't know what they're in for.
@@vivianalyon3791 … They are too scared, lol, like the rest they want to remain safe with the mainstream commercial jams. They said "NO". That is why Gen X will always rule Y & Z. I enjoyed it when I was 12 y/o... ROFL
Imo there best song and I do agree the guitar parts with the rising melody and melodic sound with the keyboard is so good
there are 3 videos from the rock opera tommy that you should check out, first "eye sight for the blind by eric clapton, "acid queen" by tina turner, and "pinball wizard" with elton john , make sure you watch the videos from the movie
if you notice closely in "eyesight for the blind" the holy communion is whiskey in barbiturates
Got to listen to the whole album. Wish you were here. To get the full effect! It's worth it.
You HAVE to listen to " comfortably numb pulse concert. Blow your mind,it will!
"Have a Cigar" is another Pink Floyd song you might want to check out some time when you have the chance.
Nice to see young peoples listen music from 1975 ! 👍
The next song on that album following "Welcome to the Machine" is called "Have a Cigar" which is very funky in comparison but a great tune none the less you'll both likely enjoy it too. If you're looking for something more longer then "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" from the same album is another great song.
I love it when they go down on the guitar too!
I was afraid no one would understand what I meant lol.
My 16 and 20 years olds could recognize this song in 2 seconds since they wėre 2years old!!
Wish you wew here FULL ALBUM reaction
Yeah I have been hearing a lot about doing Full Album listens. Ill have to do that. I will break up the videos Ill release like one video each day. Ill likely get around to doing that kinda soon.
It doesn't matter what your genius is, society will tell you who you "really" are and what you can do.😉🤗
you should listen to "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" by the yardbirds , just remember its from 1966
Just to help you guys out on the lyrics, this song (and pretty much the entire album) is about former band member Syd Barrett, who couldn't cope with the stress of fame and the mechanical nature of the music industry (commercial music production). As a result, he fell into drug addiction and mental illness. He became impossible to work with and the band was forced to dump him.
I recommend you to watch High Hopes live (Pulse)
I thought it was a space ship taking off when I first heard it. I was stoned at the time though. It was allowed I was about 19. I think I appreciate it more now.
All Floyd is fooking great guys Happy birthday bro
The Machine is the system that keeps demanding you perform rather than just being.
Syd Barrett. That whole album is about him. Look him up. It brings that song and album into perspective. Also, i recommend "Childhood's End" off of Obscured by the Clouds album. Very underrated Pink Floyd in my book.
Obscured By Clouds is probably my favorite PF record.
Listen to the advice you will get from the many Floyd fans. Many have been listening to this band for over fifty years an a lot of them will tell you to listen to entire albums, not single songs. They are right.
Starless by king crimson
Tarkus by Emerson, lake & palmer
yes. King Crimson. I really wanna get into them. Being a Tool fan, Danny Carey talks highly of them.
such a good choice!
If you have 12 minutes to spare, DOGS off Pink Floyd Animals is quite an emotional journey
Not gonna lie, I thought I was gonna get some entertaining reaction out of the synthesizer that follows the guitar part. Still, it's always satisfying to see people getting introduced to Pink Floyd.
"The Machine" is the music industry.
yeah a lot of people have told me since uploading this video. Thank you for you comment.
The Machine, in my mind is life, from the lowliest ditch digger to President of the US, we are all Money generators. And every Machine needs a generator.
The machine is a one world government. Big brother.
I love that your qualification is 'Tool fan'
Little Feat. Spanish moon. From the album waiting for colombus. You'll never be the same again & you might just thank me. The entire record is great. Little Feat are the best band nobody (except other musicians) has ever heard of.
my take is that its saying im not going to be another spoke on the wheel of the gevernment, government being the machine.
One of my favorite Floyd songs! You have to react to Great Gig In The Sky!!!
Ive been listening to Welcome to the machine a lot. I fuck with it hard
The whole Dark Side album is fucking epic. Meant to be listed to as a whole like Tool albums. Wait till you hear Great Gig In The Sky. Holy fuck
I would suggest 'Us and Them' by Pink Floyd or 'Suppers Ready' by Genesis if you want to change tack. Suppers Ready is amazeballs
in my opinion there is only one band that comes close to their style, tool.
I'm waiting for you to hear a new theme of pink floyd I would like you to listen "one of these days" or shine in you crazy diamond part 6 to 8
Great reaction.
Welcome my son!
Welcome to the machine!
Try 1 of the earliest pink floyd's " see Emily play " where the British beat was evolving into psychedelic rock 1967
Arnold Layne.
The song was written the same year time-travel will be discovered.
Animals is their most sinister album.
So I hear! Yeah ima soon react to the entire album
For classic rock, particularly Floyd, you really need some decent over-ear headphones or, even better, some half decent, well amplified speakers. You'll miss so much with earbuds or crappy speakers. :)
Keep going down 'The(Pink Floyd) Rabbit Hole' kiddies, You will keep going down down down....
How about trying"careful with that axe Eugene"
live version
Try "Julia Dream" by Pink Floyd. It's about 2-and-a-half minutes long, short but sweet.
'
If you listen to Shine On You Crazy Diamond individually, listen to the full 25 minute video. Unless you do the album reaction which contains both songs.
Agalloch - In the shadow of our pale companion
Please react to Pink Floyd - Hey You
Listen to Comfortably Numb - Pulse edition. Many of us consider the second guitar solo as the best ever
A companion piece to this song is Have a Cigar off same album. Check it out! Also, love ur channel so far, keep it up...
The lyrics just go rite over their heads
Dont´t be unfair; they were born 25 years after this record was released, and they are "reacting" to something they´d never heard before. Give them time, they´re on the right track. Like these kids very much!
@@javiergilvidal1558 I'm 19 so I'm even younger thi and I know I just wish they'd understand the lyrics maybe they just need some acid first
