I think beginners vids on getting started with certain lures would b a good idea. I've fished most of my life but I don't fish & have confedence with every type of bait. Some baits fish all the time & know we'll some I never do. I think getting to basics on some things is good idea to. We tend to over complicate alot of things, keeping it simple is sometimes better way to go. Much Appreciated
Good tips for boat owners and deeper water. For shallow water, cranking the bait down at the start will bury the bait into the bottom. Bank fishermen will find it harder to jerk the bait downward without slapping the pole on the water also. When considering pole length as a bank fisherman and, one who often wades into the water to reach a more productive area, consider getting yourself a 6' or even shorter rod. You may not get the distance but, you wont be slapping the water when standing in knee high water either. Having said this, I love jerk bait fishing all year long and always have one tied on. My favorite way to fish!
I started fishin less then 6 months ago for the first time since using my gramps stuff as a child (mostly night crawlers at the time). Been watching a lot of your vids and a lot of others and been havin some success. I’d love a beginners series and appreciate what you do, most pros would never give up the tips you do!
Excellent video Randy! Great information and laying it on the line. Semi slack line on the jerks rather than a tight line gets the maximum action out of these!
Great video, simple and informative. I've been fishing most of my life but I've never had much luck with a jerkbait, I can't wait to try this out! Thank You
Randy is the man. I have used many of his tips to land multiple PB this year. one helpful suggestion for those starting out. a "jerk" is not a pull. you need to return the rod tip back to original position. the rod tip will spring back on its own if done correctly with a light grip. very important in the technique.
Thanks Randy that was a very informative demo! Looking forward to more jerkbait vids for sure. Also going to check the archives for those you’ve already done.
Thank you , Randy !! I plan to start fishing jerkbaits , deep crank baits, and the Alabama Rigs this fall . I've always been a Panfish Guy , but I plan on expanding my horizons in fishing !! Appreciate the How To !!
I get best results using a 6'8" medium/fast spinning rod and 8-10lb copolymer line. I like to jerk the rod sideways. It's easier for me to work the bait and I get very good hooksets. These on the water videos are great!
Great Job Randy! Way to expand your audience. Not everyone is a seasoned vet on a tourney trail. I like to use rapala xraps and kvds because they're a little cheaper but still get bit. Also, you want the jerkbait to suspend and might have to add some lead dots to it. Love seeing that line jump or feeling that little tick when they hit!
@@kaliz8552 A jerkbait is the ultimate reaction bait to my way of thinking. It was once thought of as primarily a cold water technique but excels year-round in triggering bites.
Great video Randy. Good content. I learned to fish a jerk bait by watch pros like you during tourneys. I had great success when throwing a Fluke by working it violently and pausing. I was working it usual way and getting zero strikes. I just started jerking real aggressively and got bit almost every cast. Thanks R. 👊🏼🛶🎣
Great vid Randy, do you ever use some of the more obscure Megabass jerkbaits like the Vision 95, Leviathan, Margay etc? I got bunches of them but really never hear of anyone else using them.
When Randy talks jerk baits, I listen intently. He's like E.F. Hutton. Following his tips I caught my best Table Rock bass ever this past January (7 lb) using his jerkbait tips. Caught several more good ones in the 5 lb class as well. I went from one who has a couple of jerk baits in my tackle, never really using them, to a 100% believer and regular jerkbait user, over the last winter.
I fish jerk baits nearly year round, except for when ice is on the lakes. They are fantastic strike generators. I usually use a 3 jerk technique, instead of 4 and 2 intermittent, but sometimes I find it helps to be erratic when you make that lure dance. If it's really cold, like it gets in the north east, you can still catch them, but your pauses need to be long. I'm talking up to 7-8 seconds to give them time to look at it. It works, as I've landed many bass even during snowstorms.
I've actually caught bass from under the ice on a jerkbait in the early spring when the colder end of the lake has just a little ice shelf around the shore, you can work along that edge & see them come out from under the ice to hit a bait.
@@Whatsinanameanyway13 I have as well. It's pretty awesome to watch them come out like that, but usually it's the pickerel and pike who get to the lure first lol
Nothing better than getting a viscous strike after letting it pause for a second or two. I had a big channel cat darn near rip the rod outta my hands this year when he smacked a jerk on the pause. Too fun.
@@ibanez2010 I always hold my rods with 1 or 2 fingers in the front of the reel seat. That way, if a big fish hits me, even if I have a loose grip on the rod, the reel is hooked into my finger and I'm unlikely to lose it.
@f geng I've had jerk baits break through a loop knot as there is a lot of pressure on the line with the baits ring slamming against it with every jerk. If your hands were bound with a zip tie, I believe it would be easier to break that tie if there was a loop provided instead of the zip tie being snug. I think a Palomar knot and, a knot that's snug against the ring of the lure avoids this perhaps at the expense of a few more bites. There are way more variables that are going to determine if you get bit than to consider using a loop knot. Just my $.02
Beginner tips are key! Would you please give more? Also, can you tell a little more about what depth a jerk bait runs. You could always through in a few of your catches from the past on the baits you go over. That would be some Awsome content! Thank you for all the help and taking time to pump out videos!

I thought I was the only one that used a spinning rod for a Jerkbait. For a jerkbait like a MB 110 what action rod and what size and type of line do you normally use.
He uses a Megabass Orochi Whipsnake. Its a finesse spinning rod, light action, extra fast. Weight range 1/16 to 3/8. Blows my mind he uses this rod for it but he says it's his most used rod.
I was wondering what would be the difference of a VISION 110 on 10lb fluorocarbon and a VISION 110 + 1 on 40lb braid? Maybe you or Megabass could offer different scenarios. I do respect all your inputs, and enjoy the tutorials.
Randy, so you're reeling while you're jerking? I usually jerk the bait, then reel up the slack on the pause. Gets that why I'm hit or miss with the jerkbait
I am coming from fly fishing so I naturally gravitate towards jerk baits and walking style baits because I have a hard time trusting lures to do the actions themselves. I know it sounds weird but when you fish streamers on a fly rod it's kind of like fishing a jerk bait. I just have to get used to having a reel in my hand and not fly line.
I don’t get to use too many jerk baits. I mainly fish ponds with a lot of grass, but when I do get to fish a lake or reservoir you can bet I’m gonna throw a jerk bait at some point of the day.
the new Megabass Landsat has the same specs as the Whipsnake. lighter and more expensive. essentially an upgrade to the whipsnake. they work great for me
If a baitcaster is good enough for Hank Cherry to win 2 Bassmaster Classics on a jerkbait, then that is what I'm going to stick with. He also uses a lot heavier flourocarbon. Don't believe the lies about bass seeing your fishing line. Flourocarbon is invisible when under the water, no matter what pound test you use.
I disagree, only go to spinning rod after fish spawn so you can work jerkbait faster, need straight fluro on baitcaster when that water is 38-50 when they really bite good
Let me teach you elite level jerkbaiting for one case. 3 treble hooks are overkill and useless. The front hook only serves to foul or line tangle. Better to have 2 with one being at the middle, esp. for all jerkaits ranging to 130 size jerks. Companies who design three hook jerks are stupid and have stupid engineers working for them. 1st, if you have to gave it it must be moved back. 2. If you have to have it, it must gave smaller front hooks with the front balanced or headdown via the internal weight. Plus, three hooks are extremely hard to remove from fish thereby damaging fish. Better to have 2 sharp hooks as stated above. I will stand behind those worlds. And I hafen't even begin to talk about jerkbaiting.

You don't need to get the lead out. Just put hooks that are slightly heavier on, and they'll suspend correctly.

Try a medium/Fast. You'll need the parabolic bend. Also helps not rip the bait from the fishes mouth.
