One more step you can do is run full tones. It's kind of like 50 tones on the equinox but better! I run square full tones and you can hear so much information.
This is no bs. The other day I went to this is school house site. A guy comes out and asks what I'm looking for. I said old coins relics and whatever else I find. This guy told me he had been all over it with his equinox for days and never got anything good. Not even a clad coin. I spent 2 hours there. I got 4 what pennies. A mercury dime and 6 clad coins! I met up with the guy afterwards and showed him. He was so surprised! Then he says yeah I hear those deus 2 detectors are game changers.
We’ll went to my over hunted beach this morning in South Texas just put in you changes and we’ll 1 14k ring 1 silver and 1 bling ring we’ll be using this more often Thanks your videos are great .
20 inches on a nickel in sand. I didn’t think that was possible! I am yet to get the same results on dirt but I’m working on it. Congratulations Darrell!
more videos like this please! me and my d2 are at the beginning and i cant really understand it! you have a simple and easy way of explaining things. thank you!
I was a fan of the square tones at first. I think it was because I was swinging an equinox before I got the D2. Now I am running PWM and loving it! Just like the manual says, you get more details out of the tone's nuance with PWM.
For me, sound is my area where I need special education. I couldn’t hear and understand the differences on PWM the way I heard with square.
You nailed my settings. Tracking is very important just as you said. This is a very deep program while running tracking. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing another wonderful video and the very helpful information
Thanks!
Thank you!
A modified park mode is my go to program. I've found some super deep silver this summer with it and the 9 inch coil.
Your Vids are so joyful! I've watched you for years now, I've been using the Deus since 2014 and now think i'm due an upgrade to the Deus II... As always another great vid! :) Wayne, Wales UK.
Great video as usual! Can't wait to try this out at my local beach 😎 Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you much sir,I will try this, have a beautiful day.
I use the park program and have modified it similarly mostly for coins and as worked very well. Was a little hesitant to lower the reactivity much below 2 but at 0.5 still great separation and increased depth. Thanks for your findings on these settings!
Appreciate your video. I like your sense of humor and knowledge.
Great Video! As is Gabriel, the Deus 2 and I are at the very promising beginning of what hopefully will be a long and blissful relationship! Your videos are helping with the learning curve and my enjoyment of that learning process. You are a Teacher, and a good teacher makes all of the difference, as you are doing. If I were a HS Student in your school, I'd want to take your class! The presentation is excellent. Thank you Merrill...
Hi Merrill, the book seems to counter your statement. By definition PVM gives the user more information than square. Square only changes on size and depth, whereas PVM changes based on the info it gets back from the change in the radio wave, the change in amplitude. If you listen, PVM and Square should both give you different info on a ring vs coin, with PVM giving you more of a nuanced difference in sound between the two.
Also, about the recovery / reactivity speed, it’s the nature of the tuning that is giving you a “larger” sound I think. Try it in your test garden, your coin will sound larger with reactivity on zero vs 4 or higher. It’s more a function of the setting versus a function of the item in the ground. Also, be careful with your audio level. It can mask some things if you have it up too high. It turns up ALL sounds, blips from EMI included. BTW I really like square as well, it sometimes really helps those signals pop! Love your videos! Keep ‘em coming!!!
Another important tone difference is thin tone & mass tone. Put a square tab and coin, or ring, on the ground. Go back and forth and burn the difference in your head. Thin objects have a thin sound. Mass objects, including thin gold rings, have a heavy sound. Bent tabs and small foil wads may give a heavier sound. This eliminates digging most tabs. A zinc is a small solid round sound. Don’t need to dig zincs. If it’s zinc ID and not solid, then dig. You can hear the hole in a ring. Low frequency on low conductors accents the sound.
By low frequency, I mean low tone.
Excellent work thanks for sharing
Merrill I've been using park for nine months now and am still digging deep silver my nox missed. For instance, yesterday at Huntington Beach CA I dug four silver coins deep where I know others have detected.
The Hunter GT programmed my Deus II for me. The only thing I asked him to do, was work on the volume. Now I don't find gold in Park Mode, but when I swing across a nickel, the volume is loud. If I swing across a zinc penny I don't even hear it. When I swing across a copper penny, it's loud. I know, I know, I don't find gold, BUT I do find silver. I will make another program just like the one I have in park mode and follow your suggestions. Thanks, YOU ARE THE BOMB. Yes, when at the beach I use beach mode 95% of the time, and do find gold.
Yes Merrill, thanks for those tips you shared with us each and every episode, your awesome dude. Now I head over heels for the coinage but, I'm also game for anything of value and old. These tips will help us to detect with confidence on what to expect out of this Metal Detector, the XP Deus 2. Thank you, Merrill, you are the King of Rings... the Eggster.
Thanks Greg!
Wicked. I do not own a Deus2 but I find this very interesting.. Thank You for taking time and giving us some great insight
Using a picture is a good example. I use a window with cars moving by to try to explain. The speed of the car can relate to sweep speed combined with the recovery speed. Those two MUST be tweaked together if your machine allows you to. Oh crap my wife needs something done I will come back and see if I can try to expand on your picture comparison. But first I will check which setting the Deus lets you adjust so I can try to offer some suggestions to test. Gold has a disadvantage because it doesn't corrode and I'll explain why and it explains why copper or silver coins scream
My thoughts exactly.
Certain single frequency detectors I've used, ping off the exact same way in pretty standard Disc. Modes. It's all about what sound it's going to make and how well you want to listen in the end!
I own more than 20 detectors now. I’ve seen nothing differentiate size like the D2 in square.
Hi Merrill thank you very mucht. Today i find my first silver ring. I Learn a lot from your channel thanks have great weekend 😎
Congratulations!!!
@@MetalDetectingNYC thanks ☀️😎🦯💍
I absolutely love my D2. Mainly used as a beach machine with the 9 inch coil. It punches through black sand like no other detector I've ever used (many) I have only used the deep high conductor on land with lots of success until last weekend. I was using park and fast and to be honest I was a little overwhelmed. Just need more hours on the machine.
That went a little over my head: as a Simplex user, these Deus control box menus put me back in the trenches when I used to try and program the VHS recorder ...anyhoo, may I be the first to congratulate you on your (almost) reaching 4 million views Merrill! I know it's a tad premature, but I want to shout 'First' in the YT comment tradition.
Lots of hard work and very entertaining content. Thank you sir!
Thank you so much Paul!
Interesting and humorous! Liked and Subbed!
Thank you!
Looking forward to trying it tomorrow. Thanks.
Now you have me wanting one of these, but I am already impatiently waiting for my Manticore.
When I was going down 20 inches yesterday in the sand it made me think of the manticore…… as in how is it going to beat this. I had a great summer with it before yesterday……but now new levels have been unlocked. One thing is for sure though the Deus 2 learning curve is steeper.
Your videos are always very detailed and very informative , thanks for all your work and effort✌🏽
Dang I wish I saw this before the weekend, I’ll give it a try though, thanks for the tip!
Not sure about the park mode tone nuances, sounds more like ur starting to hear the “language” of the XPD2. PWM, offers even more detail. You must not use Audio Response too high or it all will sound the same, in pwm. I use it at 3 most of the time.Square tones are flatter. I like square tones. Understand XP coming out with new tones, soon. May get interesting! Nice vid M.
Great comment CZkidd ! Your are exactly correct here !
Learn from the best. Thank you & John for helping me get to know this platform.
@@MetalDetectingwithCZkidd too kind but thank you! We appreciate all of your support ! 👍😊🎉
Merrill I run the park program on the D2 to be honest it’s my go to program I do notice it might not be the deepest factory program but it has such great separation and I can usually tell what I’m digging up just by tones it’s really a awesome program.
Great job Merrill. You have my like.
Bro this video had me rollin!!! Thank you for sharing and happy hunting!!
Thank you so much!!!!
Great video lots of information going to give a go park hopefully some rings because a ring is a ring thanks mate 👍
General mode with square - full tones, audio response 7, and reactivity 2. You'll find stuff in areas that are hunted to death.
gday from oz,i know you have a whites beach hunter, try putting on ground balance on seven then put some coins and some big lead and some small lead,oh and also some iron and some gold rings to test see what happens, also see what happens to the tones on silver coins and silver rings.
Hahaha that thumbnail is amazing
Great video Merrill, being a closet Nox user I’ve always hated the PWM sound, probably from when I briefly owned a Deus 1 anyway, I switch to square tones whenever I go out however here in colonial New England I hunt in either deep HC or general because I hunt with a Deus “ snob😆” anyway, I haven’t even touched park but now I plan to. As to audio response and reactivity, I think I keep the audio response on 5 as a force of habit when I set up and depending on the spot, I’ll leave reactivity at 2 or 2.5 only because when using my Nox with super low reactivity it seemed like the machine was working in slow motion ( if that makes sense) but that really bugged me so I stopped unless I was sloooooooooooow beach hunting deep on washed out beach. Keep the D2 videos coming ghat machine has so much that hasn’t been unlocked it’ll be scary when it is……..Manticore ppppppffffffffff
Ive tried equinox park mode on the beach…. Suddenly so many more targets 👍
I'll have to try Park at the beach too on my Nox. Thanks
Thank you for another awesome video
park mode has helped me. i use full tones with decreased reactivity and increased sensitivity. there is an old park in a small town. it has been hammered. HAMMERED. i have pulled 5 silver dimes in the last 2 weekends using PARK. its a new day here in Arkansas.
you didn't explain the tracking however......
@@kydo97 the tracking reads the ground and adjusts for changes in mineralization.
Awful lot of fussing with settings.
I'm with you. I have pulled a LOT of silver with my Deus II in park mode that my NOX missed. My program is set with a HIGH volume for silver, and nickels (60-62 & 90-99), all other targets are quiet.
V funny and informative. I bet you're a great teacher. New sub from the UK
Thank you!!!
This is exactly what Calabash digger been saying the whole time. It's even in beach programs too. Have to play around with the settings....
Hi Merrill, I have really enjoyed your videos and knowledge of metal detecting in general. I haven't owned a metal detector since I was a kid, an old radio shack one...which was great at finding pull tabs and nails.....not much else at my skill level and its capabilities from back in the day. I have been looking to buy a metal Detector for fun and my ears are open to what you are saying, but sometimes answers bring up more questions, so the research continues. I think and you may agree the XP Deus II is probably the best detector out there at the moment. The nox 800 is no slouch, and the legend is great for the money. But I put money aside when making my final decision. I am looking for the best detector based more on the abilities than the price. Not that I am not saying I would pay 5k, but in the sub 2k category which I would say is the "above average detectorist category" the Deus would be slightly better then the equinox based on what I think you have determined by your user and research. All that being said, I can wait for the Manticore if it would be the same or slightly better than the XP Deus II. I am partial to minelab based on their reputation and you get just about as much for the money as the Deus II, so why spend more for about the same is and of where I am at now. The manticore's ability hasn't been determined yet as far as I have seen, but I am anxious to learn more. My decision in the end will be based on abilities of the unit, use/functionality, updatability, support and features more so than the price. Thanks again for what you do!
Deus 2 is great but has a steep learning curve. My head would be spinning if it was the first detector I used after a long time. Equinox is plug and play with slight adjustments. Manticore is about to drop. My website has my thoughts on the detectors that I have used iratemetaldetectors.com
Reactivity 0 in a park might be counterproductive if it's trashy. At the beach it's great. For an area full of metal, reactivity minimum might be better around 2.
I love Square tones. I had t send my xp deus 2 in for repair and had to use my Original Deus and the tone difference was not there like the xp2... Keep up the great videos :) Yeah
Size difference is also related to depth. If both the coin and ring are the same depth then you can hear it. But if they are at different depths then you can't hear which is which
PS Gold mode is God mode for all targets try it
Park on the Nox really increases find rate in similar circumstances. I can tell target size with the Nox.
I’m guessing that audio response is pretty much like the modulation on and off on the old Whites Spectrum series detectors. I would turn it off on my XLT when I was going deep and didn’t want to miss anything that would otherwise come in faint.
I’m not sure but it sure sounds like it
Rings hit harder because the circular nature of the object allows for the current to 'find a path of least resistance' forming a loop, this property is called electrical conductance. Eddy currents want to flow in circular paths. All detectors will hit harder on a torus / ring structure compared to an equally inductive (read equal mass) target that is not a ring structure. It has nothing to do with the mode of the detector, nor the audio processing, but rather a natural product of the physics of the situation (and a fortunate one in the favor of the detectorists since rings, ring up stronger!).
This topic was discussed 20 years ago. Go take two identical circular rings of different metals bury one then cut the other one and straighten it out and go see what happens. Then you might want to rethink that. Also use different detectors that use different frequencies. The freqimuency has more to do with how hard it hits gold or silver. 2 kHz will scream over a silver coin and hit the gold no where near as hard. Then use a detector that operates near at least 13kHz and listen to how it sounds on the ring. It's also going to be noisy because it wants to find every bit of minerals including iron.
@@stevenallen9592 I'm confused, are you really denying a scientifically established property of electromagnetism? lol.
I don't disagree that frequency matters in regards to a target's response, but I fail to see how that disproves a key aspect of electromagnetism that has been established well beyond any scientific doubt.
I agree, I saw a video here on UA-cam awhile ago about a gold ring that was found, ring was broken in one spot. So what was demonstrated in the video was , when ring was passed over coil it sounded bad, but when the two pieces were squeezed together to form complete circle, it sounded great.
@@jonfranklin9361 Yeah you can get a pull tab or a ring pull and sweep it under the detector, find the max distance, then cut it and see that the max distance will be halved. It's trivially easy to prove at home. I might make a video of this demonstration.
You stop learning with this machine that's one of the things I like about it 😏
Good job i enjoyed your video.I do not have D.2 .But good Luck to you.
I use Park all of the time but I use the XY screen with it and I have gotten to where when I am coin shooting I know 99.9% of the time what I am digging before I am digging it.
What’s the special sauce Merrill , I no it’s a constant learning but what’s your common settings park vs beach hunting
Merrill 😅👍🏼 Great watching and learning from Mr Merrill 👌🍺
Great info!
So the next question for me is what are the legend tones based on? Pulse width modulation? Can we take this learning and apply it to any other detector.
Given that Nokta release updates for the legend, is this something we can request!?
What is so impressive about Nokta is that they do keep a close pulse on what their competitors do. There is sound differentiation on the legend but it does not hold a candle to this.
I would be very careful with steps 3, 4 and 5. These can be contraproductive depending on site and target abundance, especially the discrimintated targets. But hey, whatever works for you. Also, keep in mind that there are some coins bigger than some rings and vice versa. Therefore the sounds are not someting to go by.
i was about to buy it, but many things stopped me... maybe i could be wrong because really didn´t understand. After i watched all your videos (and others too):
1) If i swing on the beach, and i want to go into the water...until the chest for example, i need to change the waterproof cap and than change it again once got back to the beach? And if it YES, than WHY?
2) Someone told me that inside the water there are too much problems. At least, if compared to the silence of the Excalibur. Is there a way to get a good combination in the salt water?
3) No 99 tones?? I´ve seen up to 5 tones but then just the pitch, which is almost the same squeaky sound
4) Two questions about the "hardware": does the coil nose up when push it into the water? CPU is safely hooked to the shaft?
wouldn't the sounnd amp up if the target was closer to the surface ???
Yes it would. On the lake bed I was digging fresh drops. And it was so easy for me to tell differences by sound. When those objects are deeper in the ground it is still differentiated put more of a challenge to the ear.
Hey... have you thought about a cherry picking program on the D2? One that only picks the shallow targets for coins...Anywho...good luck on the manticore.
But here's the most important part Merrill, now that you've made this discovery/breakthrough with the Deus II, does the price/performance ratio make it the best detector on the market? I believe you're on record as saying the Legend is the best when considering price/performance ratio, followed by the Nox 800, and then the Deus II. Has this changed your thinking? I swing a 'Nox 600, so consider my price/performance ratio is probably very similar to the Legend.
I’m going to have to think this through and update my website. Great question.
You are just getting comfortable with the deus 2 and now the Manticore is coming out. I have been doing a lot of research and it is going to be better at everything plus easier to use.
We can assume that because Minelab never seems to disappoint. I can’t wait to test the Manticore. I haven’t released the video from the hunt yet but yesterday was literally the first time that I fully unlocked the power of the Deus 2. Yes it took a long time to get there.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Your video was great, I enjoyed it. I just thought it was ironic that now you will have to learn all over. You do all of us detectorists a great service by your ability to show the strengths and weaknesses of different detectors without pushing something for a manufacturer. Keep up the good work and eat lots of shushi.
I would just like to thank you for all the work you do on your videos. When something new comes out like the manticore you are one of the few people I know will give an honest unbiased report about it.
Does.machine save the last used settings? Tyi
I recently discovered park mode giving me good feedback on targets as well. I like the way it has the small foil notched out too. I see your spreadsheet and notice program 13 and 14 has descriptions but some of it is out of view. Did you figure those settings out or are they published somewhere? I checked XP's site and the manual has no mention of 13 and 14 yet they are installed on my detector.
Yes I saw that they did not put it in the manual. I did some Internet research and filled them in. At some point I will put this up on my site but there’s more information I want to gather.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Thank you Merrill
Oh look the new guys are coming round to how we metal detected 40 years ago. I used a white 6db and I could listen to that audio and tell every damn thing there was about a Target and it was not a very good discriminator I could tell more with the all metal sound than anything
Which new metal detector would you buy if only one
Very nice
I think it's similar to language dialect. I've been switching to both trying to figure out which is better, but I haven't figured it out yet.
Yes!
Why were they Baroque in the late 16th Century? They had no Monet.
NICE Brent!
I have not been using tracking with my Deus2, because of a video I saw recently. It indicated that when, in tracking mode, the metal detector actually goes on standby while the machine is doing an analysis, and then resumes. It indicated that when the analysis is being performed, you might miss targets. Is there any truth to this in your opinion?
If the deus 2 ws6 master is basically the same detector at a lower price, would you recommend it over the legend when it comes to
Price and performance? Or would you recommend buy a legend over the deus 2 ws6 master? I’m ready to
Buy one just can’t make my mind up
I emailed you a picture of you in your younger days.😃
Lmao. Yes park mode is awesome!
My old 4khz radio shack can find that stuff.
The one from 1976?
Is Park use higher discrimination wonder 🤔
Deus is the top detector right now..in my poor opinion

Better be careful talking about size. Might end up going on a date and a woman breaks out a metal detector during dinner to determine size. LOL.
