BIG TIP - I did every last thing Matt suggested in this video and my reel still uploaded pretty compressed. I've just learned that under Data Usage in your instagram account settings there is a toggle for High Quality Uploads. If that isn't turned on your export settings won't matter! I had to pause this to say it is absolutely how tutorials should be done. I watch a ton of these and this is the gold standard. No shtick, no dead space -- just the straight goods told effectively and efficiently. Good job.
Hey man, my 4k project I imported into those settings is all cropped out. I guess I have to edit the original at those settings first? Or should I just scale the original clips on the timeline to fit those dimensions?
Honestly, I never comment on UA-cam videos but I HAD TO THANK YOU!! I have struggled with the export setting for Reels more than you can even imagine! All of the other videos on youtube were extremely long and hard to follow so again THANK YOU!!!
Hello Sir, I am a great fan of yours. I followed your advice to build an editing PC. It is working great. You are a really good teacher and my source of inspiration. Your beard gives you the look of an Indian sage.
Hi Matt, thank you for a great video! I did everything as you did in the tutorial but when I play exported video, I see I lost quite a bit of detail and sharpness compared to original clip. Do you have any tips how to solve this issue? The resolution looks to be working fine with Instagram because the reel has the same quality as the exported video. But missing this sharpness and detail is still a bummer. Thanks a lot!

Wish I could say this video was 'out dated' but the info here is simply wrong from the get-go. DON'T export your video for reels at 640x1136. A quick google search will show you that reels supports up to 1080x1920... so this is basically from the beginning a tutorial on how to make your upload look worse. Then, Adobe doesn't support VBR2 Pass for hardware encoding, so in case you wonder why your settings switch to software encoding when you change to VBR 2, it's normal. The bit rate is fine at 2 / 3 if you like, I tried doing 20 / 20 on vbr 2 pass and that seemed to look the TINIEST amount better / I could've been just imagining it... anyway, keep at high resolution! also if you want to improve your video quality, increase the shadows (make them lighter) since IG doesn't process the crushed black data very well.. that's basically the only other marginal improvement that you can make.
I think in your arrogance, you forgot to say that you will never have a video, a photo, an art in 1080x1920 on any social network... and compression algorithms are different for videos and photos... if you do that you can use it... like, for example, don't use 640x1136 but 720x1280 (of course, 1080x1920), do tests between 3 and 10 although there are people who have good results with 15... But to say that what the guy said here in his video is completely wrong, it only shows two things: 1 - Arrogance; 2 - That you don't understand much about video editing Only that!
Learn young, compression algorithms will always be used by social networks and even outside of them, such as UA-cam, Whatsapp... What is attempted is to minimize the intervention of these algorithms More studies, less arrogance, more understanding of things, of people... greater perception of the whole and not just parts of a whole... And if you want to look like a master or become one, it would be very nice with you and I'll let you an oriental teaching for free... "If you want to become a master, be able to be an eternal apprentice"
Hi Matt! Your instructions are very clear so thank you! But, for my iPhone videos I recorded with 4k at 60fps, I follow these directions and presets and the results are very blurry and pixelated on both the computer and still when I airdrop it to my phone. What should I be doing differently? I follow all of your instructions to the T. Any help would be great, thanks!
Just curious, have you observed a better result by uploading a video exported at 2-3mbps vs uploading a higher quality export and just allowing IG to compress it? Also we've been uploading at 1080x1920 and I don't think I've noticed any cropping however, now after watching this I am gonna double check that. Have you tested that as well?
thank you for this video but i have a question.. looking at various sites in internet the proper horizontal resolution should be 1080p and not 640 (to be more accurate 1080wide x 1350tall) ... this is what they say for IG stories/Reels.. am I missing something ?
Yes, it is... you are reading it wrong on the internet! 1080x1350 is in 4:5 aspect ratio, called "portrait mode" and is not for reels, stories and for the feed. For reels, the storie aspect ratio is 9:16 (16:9 inverted) which is what you might have seen on the internet talking about 1080x1920 The resolution he shows in the video is the minimum recommended for the 9:16 aspect ratio and according to him, using this way you start to reduce the compression interference of Instagram algorithms.
KDE Connect is also another useful tool, it's basically a windows version of airdrop and is compatible with iOS, Android, MacOS and Windows devices so no matter what device the app is installed on it'll show up and you can transfer all your files across multiple devices. I use it all the time when transferring files from my mac to PC, iphone to PC, Android to Mac etc etc.
Great video, Matt! One questions though. I keep seeing online that reels need to be 1080x1920px. Is this something they changed recently, cause I've seen you go for 640x1136px?
Hey when they mention reels needs to be 1080×1920px they mean that it needs to be high quality. Whereas Matt here he's saying, if your video is 1080×1920px instagram automatically compresses it to 640×1136px, so it's best to chose 640×1136px since instagram compresses it bad! I think this is what it means. Not sure tho!
Has anyone had any trouble with loss of color/vibrance after upload? I'm on Premiere, using the gamma compensation LUT when exporting. The color looks awesome when airdropped to my phone, but the moment it's uploaded it gets washed out and flat.
Yes, it happens and I'm sorry to inform you that nothing can be done about it... to be as close to what you've done, try to limit yourself to sRGB and also avoid using gradients... Social networks don't get along very well good with gradients, haha!
I just recently started an Instagram page focusing on reels right now. I've chosen Premiere Pro as my go to video editing software though there seems to be something contradictory that I can't wrap my head around. I've seen this 640x1136 setting for exporting but I'm curious as to why use this instead of the 1080x1920 option? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
In fact you can use any resolution that is within the 9:16 aspect ratio. He used what some social media experts say is the smallest within 9:16, which would be 640x1136, but it could be 720x1280, 1080x1920... This actually affects very little, the most important thing really is the bitrate... Keep in mind that the compression algorithms of social networks, Whatsapp (too terrible) will always act on the video, on the photo... simply ruin the quality of your video, your photo, your art... Social networks, for example, don't work with RGB, but with a smaller color space, sRGB... when you do something in photoshop for social networks I always advise you to create using this color space - sRGB
As for the bitrate, I advise you to test between 2 and 10 and see which ones are best for you. Remember that it can also vary by the type of video you have, for example a video with very fast movements (bitrate too low will ruin your video - but the compression algorithm will too if you don't try to reach a middle ground )... Actually, you have to try to get to a point where the quality of the video is good, acceptable... because just like the video you created it will never be on social media or whatsapp status
Hey Matt, this was just amazing, you have no idea how much this has helped me. I hope you never run out of such great helpful content that helps everyone searching for a solution. Thanks !
Haven't check to see if you've updated from this video - but I think reels dimension is now just the standard vertical 1080x1920...so following this video now would leave a lesser quality export to use for reels.
I just want to say, I've taken on the challenge to learn and use Adobe more this year and your channel has been instrumental in helping me get anything done. It's a behemoth of tool and as an absolute beginer I often have no idea where to start. The step by step instruction you give makes it easy get started. Thank you!
When I uploaded my clips that were shot at 60fps into the 30fps sequence, it looks kindof strange, and I don't know why! How do I get the beautiful quality but still able to post it to reels?
Don't know if it will work but you can try posterize time and drop the frame rate to 30 I suppose. Usually when you speed up a clip to like 2000% for a time lapse it can look kinda jittery so dropping the frame rate helps I think. But yeah like Vik Kash was saying there is no real need to film at 60fps unless you wanna slow down the footage.
Great video Matt, thanks. I've often noticed that exporting at such low bit rates make my videos look like trash - very pixelated, even before I put them online. Is it worth exporting at the low bit rate and uploading it that way, or do you think there's much of a difference in exporting at a higher bitrate and allowing IG to compress it a bit?
Yea, I tried this with a video that had lots of fast movements. It looks absolutely terrible. I'm not sure if there's really a solution though, since that's just what compression does.
Yea just tried this as well. looks TERRIBLE with tons of pixelating before I even uploaded it. He is right about the aspect ration 640x1136 but something else is off.
