I have NEVER noticed "Set to frame size"! I've wasted so much time resizing footage between resolutions in the timeline 🤦🏻♂️ THANK YOU.
Lol glad to help!
can i edit videos in 1080p on premiere pro on a 1366×768 screen?
same, this saved me sooo much time on future edits
Agreed! Thanks Matt!
Yup, me too. So obvious yet so hidden from the average user.
You just saved me a ton of time that I've been wasting! Thanks so much for this Matt! I shoot mostly 4K now with the GH5, but my b-cams are still 1080, and I deliver in 1080 to a lot of commercial clients and edit on 1080 timelines for scaling purposes...so bam! This is awesome. Thank you!!
thank you bro!
soooo useful and well explained. You're a gifted man.
I've been editing in Premiere for 8 years and I DON'T KNOW HOW I'M JUST DISCOVERING SET TO FRAME SIZE. Thanks again Matt.
You are a legend. I was following along, and was confused why after I changed the setting, the 1080p was still all small, THEN BOOM, ITS LIKE YOU READ MY MIND, and then you went on and explained that I need to delete the clip and put it back into the timeline. Thank you sir.
Thank God for these tutorials. I've been slowing down clips and right clicking to set to frame size manually for awhile
PERFECT VIDEO ! Out of all the videos out this is by far the best. You lay out all the questions and you answer them very thoroughly and quick. I’ve been doing cinematography for 9+ years now and the new 4K and red cameras was a big learning process... this just answered all questions in less than 5mins. Great Job !
This guys is a genious! Although the technical information he provides in _this_ exact video wasn't new to me - his personality, presentational skills, explanations and overall vibe is without at doubt something I have not experienced with other "tutors" on UA-cam!
*_Subbed! :D
TRUTH
I agree.
I've been doing this 1 by 1... You saved my life Matt
Loving your videos, Matt! Even though we have been working in the broadcast TV for 20 years and editing almost every single day, we still learn from your content. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!!
Thank you. I've been wasting my time altering each one by one and then finally looked up tutorials and you're the only one that I could find!!! God bless!
OMG, I have just started learning Premier Pro, and I have an actual project to do -- this was SOOOOOOO helpful!!! Thank you so much!
this was gold bro thanks
This may be a few years old but you saved my arse today. For someone (ME) who does Premier twice a year, this was a huge time saver. THANKS!!!!!
You are absolutely awesome, Matt. Being a newbie to video editing, I had no idea how to match the different frame sizes of gopro and DSLR. This video's been a life saver !
April 2020, Quarantine era, and this video is still the best! Thank you, Matt Johnson! :)
I was one of the many who asked this question. You’re a bad ass Matt. Thank you 🤗
Ben Powell i agree!
Thanks guys!
Matt, you're the man! I love your tutorials, it's really helping me understand a lot of the technical aspects of editing and helping me become more prepared and calculated during my shoots!
LOVED: "what if we did NOT change the settings" @4:32 This was amazing. You showed us HOW the settings effects the upscaling we're looking to accomplish. This was so informative. You showed and demonstrated the inner "guts" of how this process worked. Bravo!!
Are you shooting in 4K yet? Or still sticking with 1080p?
1080p for weddings and 4k for short films or projects! Hopefully in the near future I can start filming in all 4k!
Until I upgrade my gear... 1080p. Soon there will be an upgrade though. I kind of know what I would like to upgrade to, it's just pulling the trigger on it. Canon all the way.
1080 for long recordings and 4k for b-roll
previously been shooting 1080 on the Canon 70d, but been playing with 4K on the Hero 5 black recently and loving the 4k look. Currently deciding between the Sony A7R iii or the beast (Canon 1DX ii) for my next upgrade???
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson when do you recomend to use 4K and 1080?
*I have mixed feelings about this video,* Is it awesome or very helpful? ;)👍
Awesome. I'm having a morning of just watching your videos from Mavic Settings, colour grading, frame rates, scaling, speed ramping. Feel like I'm learning so much. Very much appreciated. Keep up the brilliant work.
This video just freaking saved my filmmaking life. A thousand thank you's SIR!!!!
Just a heads up, the reason there is 2 options ("scale to frame size" and "set to frames size") is when you use the "scale to frame size" option, premiere is actually changing the resolution of the clip to match the sequence instead of just scaling. An example would be if you had 4k video on a 1080 timeline, the 4k footage would have extra/unused resolution when using the "set" option which is more processor intensive and slows down your workflow. If you used the "scale to frame size" option, it would actually downscale the 4k footage to be 1080 lines of resolution and in turn be less processor intensive to work with. If you need the extra resolution to stabilize or punch in on a clip, use the "fit" option. if you plan to use the entire frame without need for scaling/cropping, use to "fit" option. I hope i explained that well enough... kind of confusing
Whats the fit option?
So if I want to scale from 4k to 1080 and have more resolution I have to do "set to frame size"?
@@GramMedia yes
The video should have been 30 seconds long and include your input. Thanks a lot! :)
thank you thank you thank you thank you. now i dont have to scale every single clip i pull out of 2k footage to fit my 1080p timeline
You've said it Matt, many people may know it but I'm making my first steps in video editing (I usually just take pictures) and this was really helpful. Nice job and thank you so much!
Ohh Man, last 2 months I was searched almost everyday for this information… I tried to combine gopro footage and phone footage, and exactly what happened that was you showed here…
Thank you so much 😊
Hi Matt, you managed to incredibly describe well what I have been researching last week across several other youtube videos :). Great video as always!
Btw, when I was editing I thought about this: one of the advantage of working on 1080 sequence using 4k footage is that (when needed) you can do digital zoom in parts of the footage without going under the 1080 resolution. Would you agree with this?
Definitely right! :)
Hey Matt! Great video! Quick question though, when you are upscaling the 1080p footage to 4K, is it any way degrading the resolution of the 1080p clip? You would think upscaling a lower resolution to a higher resolution would do that. Any thoughts?
Thanks Chas! The quality is going to be degraded a bit, simply because the 1080p video is being stretched to fit the 4K image size.
i love this guy
Geez, I always learn so much from you. I've been manually adjusting my frame sizes for every, single clip for over a year now!!! Arghhh!!! But now, I see less editing frustration in my future. Thank you so much!!!
9minutes 53 seconds. That’s the real hero here. Good video!
😂😂😂
Great video. There may be videos that can do it in less time. But the added discussion and rationale is definitely worth my time.
HOLY $H!T Matt WhoisMatt Johnson you just saved my life!! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH for making this video!!
If it wasn't for this video my video would have never been made. Here's the end result all thanks to Matt!! : ua-cam.com/video/IWHkpUILv6M/v-deo.html (shot entirely on the GoPro MAX)
Bro. Thanks, I do not know a lot about video editing and this is a good start to comprehend all my failures in the past. I am watching as many of your videos as possible.
Matt, your consistency and general presence is awe+some! Thanks! Keep up the good works.
Dude...your demeanor and delivery not to mentioned succinct knowledge and ease on camera make's you the ideal teacher... online, classroom - you name it. You have a wonderful gift for teaching. Before I clicked on your video, I was afraid of learning something that sounded convoluted and hard to understand... I bet you can make getting a PHd a breeze! ha ha ha! Thank you for your service!
thank you thank you thank you for being so thorough in every video. you answer every question before I can even think of it
Thanks a lot, Matt. I just landed at the right place at the right time. With this one single video, I have subscribed now 🙏
This was perfect. I had one sequence with a different definition. The right click option you described worked well. I am glad this option is available after you start your project. Luckily I was able to export the entire video in the full screen mode, which is what I needed. Thank you!
Thank you so much... you have no idea how grateful I am for this video of yours.
Your tutorials are the most cohesive. They make the most sense. Thank you for this.
Dude. You're the absolute best. Keep coming back your vids constantly.
THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Brooooo thank you!! Super helpful and did a great job of explaining how to get it done in multiple ways!
you're amazing, my man!! You're helping me with a lot of premiere pro issues I'm having. Keep it up. Thank you!
THANK YOU!!! Other videos on this had a workaround but this is by far the most elegant solution
Thank god , people like you exist. Love you Matt.
Thank you so much! The EDIT PREFERENCES MEDIA setting changed my LIFE aaaaaaaaaaa
Beautiful explanation, thank you Matt!
Matt, You'll never know how helpful your videos are. I come back to them time and time again to remember settings. Thanks for your work. I hope you're making money from the UA-cams.
You have all the answers for my questions, you sir are a legend! Can't thank you enough🙏🏼 Glad i found your channel
Just watched your video regarding mixed frame rate and now finished watching mixed resolutions video. Thank you.
Just got my first actual camera, an a6500, and I've just started with this who photography and filmmaking thing. Thank you so much for these videos.
Awesome as always!
I'm a novice in editing using Premiere Pro, but videos like this really helps out ironing out the minor kinks that might be a huge problem
for some people, me included. Thanks for the video, this helped me out! :)
Love your premier pro tutorials man, they are details yet simple. Thanks.
Great teacher and the way you explain everything is simple to understand. Thank you
Thank you so much! I saw 3 videos that made me waste my time and now I found you with the right answer! I really appreciate
Brother! This + the mixed frame rate video you did are a life saver. Appreciate it!
Dude, thank you so much for making this! Just saved me so much headache, I was confused why I was getting black bars and I didn't realize I had mixed clips from switching between a GoPro 4k and Pixel 2 1080p video. Thank you!!!!
I'm 33 and have been a video editor since I was 21. Somehow, I have never found the need to upscale my 4k until today. I was about to leave a comment on one of your behind the scenes videos to ask how you would personally go about it. I then searched and found this video. Exactly how I would do it, good sir. Appreciate some confirmation. Thanks! FYI; I'm going to take a bet that you already know this, but, it might help. If you drag your 4K clip onto the "new item" button at the bottom of your "project" window (where all your clips are listed). It creates a timeline with all the elements of your 4K footage - res, fps, audio settings. It just settles my heart knowing the timeline is exactly the same as my footage. Much love - a fellow wedding videographer Xx
Exactly the information I was looking for, thank so much!
Quality video man! Your stuff is always well produced! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the mixed frame rates vid!
SO not everyone has an actual talent for teaching. Many people know a lot of stuff. Not everyone knows how to explain stuff.
Those who don't know how to explain, should suffice (as some do) with very short, to the point videos, telling us what to click on and what to do next etc. etc.
Those who know how to teach, and there aren't many, by talent, should do exactly what it is you are doing. Amazing job, thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world!
I have searched and searched for a video explaining this. This really did help me out. Thanks Matt.
These tutorials are gems...A BIG THANK YOU !!!
Very useful Matt. Great video!
So helpful and thorough! Thank you!!
Thank you ! You're so good !!! Clear explanations, nice voice ;) and great vibe ! And most importantly I didn't have to fast forward at all !
Dude I just can't tell you how not only are you knowledgeable as hell, you teach so well at a good speed. Thanks so much!!!!
very helpful video, Thanks Matt 👏
Awesome tutorial matt 😍👍
I thank LIFE everyday for finding your channel long time ago. You are a life saver. Thank you ♥
this. This. THIS! This is the kind of intuitive video making content that people are looking for. Problem solving video content. I shot on a pro camera and a cell phone. Now I see my settings were not tweaked before hand and I need to fix that to have uniformity across all clips in my video timeline. Please keep making content like this. Its invaluable to viewers.
Watched this after the mixed frame rate video - subbed after the first. Thanks Matt!
Never seen this channel before, you have tons of great content. Thanks for everything you do on UA-cam, it's helping me loads
Thank you very much for this tutorial Matt. I am so thrilled I watched this before I started editing my mixed res footage.
Great tutorial, Matt! Can't wait for the next one.
Thanks for this, Matt. I had to do this for the first time today - hadn't had to work with clips from someone else's device filmed at a different resolution before. You saved my bacon! Thanks, mate.
Your tutorials are amazing and so easy to follow, please keep it up!! Definitely worth subscribing!
Super helpful videos. Recently decided that video editing is the world I want to work and live in and this has been a huge help with the technical side of things I am less familiar with.
Your videos are so useful! I used this video already but then I got the dreaded low exception message. So happy you posted this - thank you ⭐
The best educator in editing, camera and man !!! Maybe in all kinds of educations. Thanks for the video.
Thank You! I had no idea it was that simple!
Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. This has helped out incredibly!
I have been doing the right click \ set to frame size for each individual clip FOREVER, thanks for showing me a much faster way!

Looking forward to watch that mixed frame rate video. Thanks Matt. Great information.
Over and over again, you are my hero.
Love your stuff always!
Sweet and short! Thanks man!
You word things perfectly and make difficult concepts easy to understand! Thank you so much!! Liked and subscribed!!
Matt!! You are a life saver! I just did a wedding in a mix 4k and 1920x1080 and I was individually scaling each clip!! Man this will save me a ton of time. Thank you very much!!
