I had a custom ordered 21 M550 for about 18 months. Loved the car, but once gas prices spiked, I had to get rid of it. It was getting like 12-14mpg and for $5.xx a gallon, I just couldn't justify keeping it. I'll probably pick up a 2020, when my X3 lease is up, if gas prices drop back below $4.00. 2020 is tuneable, where the 21 isn't, so its preferable. Carbahn is making 707hp, 711ft/lbs on their tune, which should easily conquer a GT-R.

With the 550, as well as my old X5M and 750, I was finding myself driving super careful, not wanting to damage a $100k car. A $70k one doesn't seem to be as big a deal. Unfortunately the unlocks for the 21s involves sending both DMEs to FEMTO in Finland, them unlocking them and sending them back. Costs about $3,000 ($3600 for the M5) and the car is down for 2 weeks. Plus, if the dealer reflashes anything, you gotta do it again. Way too much trouble. I already have the dealer looking for a 2020 M550 or X5 M50i for me, fully loaded with low miles. @@fabian-isf5310 I agree. I’ll take some more draggy data this weekend. Also, unfortunately the M550i comes with crappy run-flat tires (including the one that is in the video). Mine has 19” wheels and even crappier all-season run-flats and it still moved out pretty well. I have a set of HRE FF10 wheels with Michelin PS 4S tires waiting for it next spring.
The M550 kept up with the GTR because it has an 8 speed transmission compared to the GTRs outdated 6 speed transmission. That 8 speed transmission made up for its weight disadvantage. If the GTR had an 8 speed transmission, this race would not be even close. The GTR had more horsepower, less torque and less weight than the M550 and as such, it had to win the race. I would argue that BMW deliberately made the M550 heavy so that it does not compete with the M5. M550 does not need tuning or additional horsepower. It only needs to get lighter by at least 100 pounds and it could potentially compete with the M5. What can be replaced on the M5? The hood and trunk need to be carbon fiber. The entire exhaust system and muffler needs to be made of lighter material. The wheels can be replaced with lighter wheels. M550 simply needs to lose weight. Period.
LOL until it comes up against a car which is actually a 'performance' car, and not a large family saloon with lots of room for 5 adults and a huge boot. M5C would destroy it. Wow! Sam, look, I'm so lucky for liking and commenting. Bizarre when the commentor actually knows the UA-camr. Makes these scams look comically stupid.
Few HP less, more torque but weights almost 400 lbs More!! So quotes for the M550
Recommend 550d xdrive
Those Nissans are amazing. Pushed too much they seem to not like. Limp mode. Otherwise quick !! That bmw was no slouch for a family hauler
Awesome nissan GTR has been produced in this way for 16 years can hang up with new super fast cars NISSAN GTR still and be a legend we hope for R36
Japan Powah! Even with less 2 cylinders and very old model/platform just proves that the GT-R R35 is so way ahead of its time.
🤣
Wow, who would have thought, one of the fastest accelerating sports cars of it's era, would be slightly faster than a large, family, 4 door saloon with 4 huge seats and a massive boot.
Yes. A Japan 2007 technology with less 2 cylinders beat the advance 8 cylinder 2022 German car. Make you wonder right? 😁
@@giocoby The M550i engine is from 2008.
The GTR was designed to rival the Porsche 991 turbo S, and be one of if not THE fastest 2 door sports cars on the planet.
The M550i isn't even the fastest BMW 5 series family saloon, or the 2nd fastest either lol.
You're fanyboyism has backfired like a thrashed Nissan.
The M5C destroys the GTR, even my 1 series with a straight 6 and only one twin scroll turbo is almost as fast.
And they are both just family cars.
Leant a bit about the cars you are fanboying, and the cars you are criticising before you embarrass yourself any more.
@Nik Gnashers Thanks for the great reaction. Thats what ive been waiting for. 😁😁😁
You sold a car because gas prices went up $2 😂😂😂 yo wtf my guy you’re crazy for that. I had a trackhawk back when prices were that high it was crazy but that didn’t last long. I now have a 2020 m550i and loving it. You should go for the 2021 m5 again if you want to hold value and don’t worry they have a unlock to tune the 21+ cars now
Wait that boat of an X3 actually does better on gas? 😂
@@scott8193 No regrets. I actually like the X3. I don't have to be as careful driving it with less power and a cheaper pricetag.
It seems cars with the rear steering are extremely rare in the US, for whatever reason, so I'm giving them plenty of time to find one. We'll see what happens
@@XAMPOL SIgnificantly. The 22 X3 M40i is a mild hybrid. I average 25-27mpg in normal day to day driving.
The fact that the GT-R is still out here taking the win is still amazing! Especially when you think about how long the GT-R has been out on the market!! Heck yea GT-R!
GTR=overrated
M550i=underrated
This is why I'll still take a GTR - do a basic tune for 91 octane and call it a day. How's the BMW going to run at 150,000 miles?
Probably still going just fine, the GTR however would have gone through about 10 clutches in that time.
If u take care of ur car it’ll run fine at 150k miles if seen some bmw’s last tile 200k-300k u just have to take care of it
@@billnye5183 Indeed. I sold my last BMW with 144k on it, still perfectly fine, even the interior looked mint.
I bought it at around 78k and only serviced it, but had to put 2 new rear shocks on, and a crank position sensor. I think that's pretty good.
What. These are two different cars. 4 door luxury sedan and a 2 door sports car, borderline supercar if it was more expensive lol.
Why would you buy a GTR if the car you're looking at a series 5 lmao.
Why not 99 octane?
You’re not right beside him he was walking you
Am a bmw fan but to be honest i love GT-R more than bmw.
Thanks Sam ♥️
What this video did was open the door to an M5 CS running a GTR.
Please do a genesis G70 VS a Lexus NX 350
Would really help if you guys gave us the drag times. Nice video
Sam are you a fan of formula 1 racing?
Since when I was 11
“Super car killer” 💀💀🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Puh that was close, it would be a huge shame if the lighter and stronger supersports car GTR would loose to the luxury upperclass sedan BMW M550.
i really really really want to see the tuned 340I vs this M550i
The tuned 340i will win.
Downpipes on the beamer would make it more of a fair race
M5 really impressive even it is family car the results are really close with gtr
Lol the GTR Rev by himself
GT-R vs a G80 M4 would be a good match
I believe the 8speed makes a difference, only because man is still shifting into higher gears and gtr been done so like i mean i dont know good races!!
Obviously the BMW is the more impressive car here and the underdog in a drag race. The platform has seen everything from a 4 cylinder to hybrid to monster V8
Should have put the nissan against the M8 it would have went differently.
The handling on the BMW is OK at best and the steering is over assisted and it feels very disconnected from the road. BMW had great steering around 9 years ago.
I have a Merc im also a big BMW guy, but why does BMW make engines that sound terrible but perform good? Like come out with a decent sounding v8 for once
Did use launch control in sports plus
Just bring the competition man
That's got to hurt a little bit that's not even BMWs race model that's a business sedan 🤣🤣
and not even tuned either so expect big power on the M550i once it gets some proper mods
Great race
I thought the 550i was gonna dust the R35 for some reason, but fair enough, great race. Both great cars.
I don't think you know what power to weight is.
@@mattyoz0 I do know, but the GTR's top range is not as impressive due to it's age so I expected it to lose. Either way, very impressive.
If the GTR can beat an M5 competition not sure why it would still race a M550
M5 comp is faster lol.
@@cw2840 m8 comp is faster, the GTR is a tad quicker
@@Solesoflyfe nah m5 and m8 comp are pretty much the same speed both walk the gtr in a roll
@@cw2840 I pretty much watch carwow for a pretty fair run between them. Also few other car pages had the.M5 and the GTR run. The M8 kept winning hands down. Majority GTR won against the M5
@@Solesoflyfe M5 traps higher in the quarter mile and runs a faster 60-130 mph time. There’s also a vid of an M5 comp pulling away from a gtr stock for stock.
Right next to the GT-R...sure, before the gas pedals were pushed down, the GT-R just confidently pulled away😄😄😄
Half a car Length for non m car Is pretty great
Curious were you manually shifting the BMW? Seemed like you were just using the automatic. It seemed like the Nissan was shifting manually and could be the part of the reason it won because he definitely was shifting more aggressively
I auto on a roll the GTR lost by 1 car, the BMW has a S mode tranny which downshifts faster, we wanted to make it fair.
A v6 still destroying modern boosted v8s. That's the most impressive
V8 twin turbo vs V6 twin turbo and the winner is!!!
So what was time quarter mile time??
All Hell Godzilla , king of the monsters
BMW's are just a dime a dozen - they're the dodge challenger/charger/mustangs of the European side...
GTR... ❤️😁
Jesus BMW, that M550i has the best bang of the bucks if you dont absolutely need to have a M5.
I definitely need a M5 Comp 😂
Id love to see a G80 M3 against the M550. Cant find any races between those two.
Gtr runs the quarter mile 11.2 at 125 m550i runs it in 11.8 at 119, so since the bmw got the jump it seems about right.
Gtr runs the quarter in 10.8 stock actually
I have a 2023 M550i that ran a couple 1/4 times on bone stock. No launch control with car in sport+ and trans in standard drive mode, I did 11.61 at 118.61 (52F).
Pretty sure with the trans in sport and using launch control it’ll rattle off a 1/4 somewhere between 11.3 to 11.5 stock…the car is so new that I didn’t know you had to put the shifter over towards the driver to put the trans into “sport mode.”
@@lordxenu2487 thank you for the real world data. These people have no clue.
@@lordxenu2487 Kind of expected the car to trap higher than 118mph. I'm sure it can trap low 120s stock with launch control
Commentator in BMW obviously has a misunderstanding that losing by a full 1.5 car length is 'by-much'. 🤣
Very interesting! Only 1 car length behind Godzilla! Thats a fast BMW... Godzilla took the win since it Most likely has a higher RPM range
Period.
As much as I love bmw (I own an e92 m3) I still want to own a gtr someday
Gtt still the best and drag destroyer
LOL until it comes up against a car which is actually a 'performance' car, and not a large family saloon with lots of room for 5 adults and a huge boot.
M5C would destroy it. As would most modern sports cars. It was amazing when it came out, but if anything, this shows how fast normal cars are nowadays, compared to one of the fastest sports cars of it's era.
Everyone has a lot more respect for the r32 33 34 gtrs
Its a 4 door against a 2 door too that against the 850 m
