My procharged nitrous mustang gt with a th400 is at 3500 rpms at 70mph with 3.73 gear ratio drove it all the way from Victoria to Houston 2 and a half hr drive was perfectly fine
3 speeds have a lot of balls off the line but when you get to higher speeds it tanks. Having that problem on my BB Camaro. Absolutely needs a 4th gear.
THM 400 is a 60's transmission with a 1:1 final ratio. It's last passenger car use was 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood Limo and Commercial Chassis with 6.0 V8. GM has come a long way since the old 400.
I have a 66 c10 with a shift kitted 350 (going th400 soon with a big block) but in my opinion it keeps you out of trouble. You can't really go 120 on the highway so there's a + in a way
So much awesomeness! Loved the head mount view of the car. Thanks for taking us along. Hope to someday build a car like yours. Can't wait to see it on the track.
I was bored for years in 700R4s, 4L60 and 4L60Es, Turbo 350, etc. Than I decided to drive a manual for 10 years and never looked back. We didn't have paddle shifters, rev matching, dual clutch, etc than though
You'll always have rev matching with a standard transmission vehicle, the only thing rev matching is, is matching revs with mph or kph when shifting. Keeps the syncros and trans last longer
you can still hook up a kickdown switch for the transmission so when your in 3rd and you get on it transmission kicks down automatically on the street and unplug it when your at the track simple. b&m and hurst sell the electronic kickdowns
Bryan .Rawls basically how high the stator in the torque converter will stay effective to. the stator uses the backflow of the fluid from the torque converter to multiply the torque. after it hits stall speed (ex 3000 rpm) the torque converter lock and send power directly to the trans.
Sure u figured it out by now but it also comes into play with let's say the cam in the motor.. let's say the cam starts making power at 2500rpms, that 3000 rpm stall would let everything get power while in the power range of the cam and use it most efficiently.. I'll admit idk a whole lot about the technical stuff so excuse me
The speed ( in rpms)of stall is the speed the torque converter' s " lockup", lower rpm lockup/ stall is more gas efficient (1950 -3000) , high-performance, high-end revving engines go much higher for maximum peak performance ( 4000-6000)
Stall speed is the speed to which the converter will allow to rev the engine when the car is stationary, e.g. held with brakes. It varies with converter and with engine torque. More torque = higher stall. Higher stall speed means higher torque multiplication that stays till higher rpm, but also less efficiency, more heat and more rubbery feel to the transmission. Lockup is something different, without lockup clutch converter will never go into lockup there will always be some amount of slip causing power loss.
+Peter Smith if u don't drive the car real far like hour drives they are sweet. They also sell seat covers with more padding and the covers just slide on and off
John Doc great, it's been years since I've needed a booster and back to needing one already lol. But that sounds awesome. Did you notice how easy it was to install? I'm going to be doing it myself and didn't know if there was a lot of custom work that needed to be done to make them fit
+Peter Smith if u install it on the sliders it's much easier if u mount it to the floor it's still not that bad. Should be in the build series. Second video
I have the same 3 speed granny with a 4000 stall what’s you stall? You think the tranny will get damage if I drive it to much on the streets I have a pro charger on my 1995 mustang gt ? Thanks awesome video
400R is a "farmers" transmission really, it has plenty of torque but more for a good cruise. That's why i put a 700r in my s10 and keep the 400R in the 1982 Silverado
Hi john.. love the content! I have a question about first start on a TH400. I fill converter with oil, fill trans with oil. Then coolers will be empty so do i start the car for a bit and add more fluid?
I just got a 2017 1LE. Is there a TH400 that will fit a 6 gen? I have a procharger and header back exhaust coming soon and I'm interested in doing a tranny swap to something like your set up
I've heard the turbo 400 robs some HP which is lost through the hydraulic coupling that does not lock like the later transmissions do. How much I don't know. But with that, of course you get extra torque. This tranny wouldn't be so bad with an overdrive gear.
vxptc1 when slowing down you CAN downshift if you want or just let it roll while its still in 3rd and when you stop put it back in 1st. i shift my 4l80 manual with toggle switches and i let it roll to a stop in 4th (converter unlocked) then flip solenoid B OFF (to 1st gear) doesnt hurt the trans at all.
I think he was trying to say as in casual driving terms. He kinda has a point since 3 gears with no O/D limits his mpg unless he sends it in highways with a terrible mpg.
It depends on wat u want if u building a grudge power add car I would go2speed power clide350:400th tranny if u buildn sumthing on motor fast no power adders I’ll go700r4 beast Camaro buy the way
So. Now as you see me going at a decent speed in my badass car that has the potential to do serious damage let me unlock my phone, scroll through my apps, find and wait for snap chat to open, take a picture, scroll through the filters, find the mph filter, wait for it to load, realize your going 60, close the app, set down the phone, and look up to hopefully still be on the road. :)

what rpm stall
@@kevinfuentes8588 do you mean stall?
depends on your converter as well
How did you adapt the th400 trans
2:45 You'll thank me later....just sayin
Preciate it fam😂
Thank you later
3 speeds have a lot of balls off the line but when you get to higher speeds it tanks. Having that problem on my BB Camaro. Absolutely needs a 4th gear.
helps you avoid jail time from speeding lol
No2TheNWO he runs eighth mile usually so dosent matter
That's why I want a 4 speed muncie rock crusher.
Isnt the fourth just an over drive?
Nothing better that a home built buffed up 4L80E

What are your RPM's at 50mph? Also is freeway driving a nightmare with the RPM's?
Cool, video. I always wondered how to change gears on a TH400.
Stock gear ratio on the TH400?
Yes
How to change gears would depend more on what shifter is installed, not so much what model the gearbox is
I have a 66 c10 with a shift kitted 350 (going th400 soon with a big block) but in my opinion it keeps you out of trouble. You can't really go 120 on the highway so there's a + in a way
Man you're missin out. My Turbo 400 shifts itself
Manually shifting can be better when racing cause you can control when it shifts and make it shift faster
Jamezz 35 u gonna stick with that or u changed ur mind in 4 months?
chris an lol!!
If your still on here teach me the ways.
Do you just have to throw it in 3 for it to shift on its own?
grab a gearvendor! absolutely the best mod for a car that has to go to the drag strip and on a road trip!
Another cool video. Even though it is boring, still cool.
Love the cage!!! looks badass bro!!! Can't wait to see it launch!!! Hope the trans leak isn't bad

Swaglife 81 4l80 mvb all the way. bulletproof compared to any t56 or gm manual for a drag car

Do you think TH400 good idea for 850whp blower corvette C7
Might be boring but it's the best trans lol
AMRI FAST BULLET yes the turbo 400 alot of fun and strong
Yeah if that's boring try a powerglide.😂
@@imaginova88 I couldn't stand the 2 speed in my Pontiac, even with a shift kit
Never understood the "stall" on autos. What is that

Is that a pro bandit shifter? I didnt know they lock between 1st to neutral
How do those seats compare to the stock ones? I'm considering getting them soon but need some convincing
+Peter Smith if u don't drive the car real far like hour drives they are sweet. They also sell seat covers with more padding and the covers just slide on and off
John Doc I'm also only 5'9" and wondering if they're height adjustable enough or am I going to look like a 6 year old boy who can't see anything lol
+Peter Smith yea they sit low but u can mount the seat bracket to stock Camaro sliders and it will boost u up
John Doc great, it's been years since I've needed a booster and back to needing one already lol.

700R4 sucks. T400 best automatic ever built.
Do you run a dump valve? How many miles are on your TH400?
does a th400 shift faster than a dual clutch automatic?
Rodger Rodger nope
Hi john.. love the content! I have a question about first start on a TH400. I fill converter with oil, fill trans with oil. Then coolers will be empty so do i start the car for a bit and add more fluid?
The th400 does have a clutch like a manual car or just the shifter ???
No clutch, with a manual valvebody you have to just shift with the shifter
"now i got a gopro scraped to my head"
😎🇺🇸👍 Hey Buddy Just Doing my Research! Good Stuff Peace ✌🏻
Let me pull up snapchat whilst driving to check my speed.
You ever hear of a speedometer app
What shifter brand is that? B&M or TCI?
aye! I'm from palm beach too lol and I'm going to cars and coffee aswell
What shifter is in your car
is bored, but win races
I'd like to hear something about stall speeds. I can't find good understandable info anywhere
Was it hard getting use to it?
Get a gear vendors under/overdrive. You will thank me. Makes it 6 speed bolt on with shorter driveshaft.
+Snap-On Auto Tech if you supply me with one I will be more than happy to run it!
What shifter are you using in this video?
What do I need to mount my th400 to my ls2?
Gear Vendors.. all I'll say
Rome3aaro gear vendor, is expensive and inferior OD. manual 4l80 is the way to go
If u think the turbo 400 is boring, try a glide
Thought when you go in reverse is supposed to hold a trans break didn’t see you do that
What kind of shifter is that
What is the name of the application on phone?
So one question is this considered an automatic transmission or manual transmission
Automatic All automatics have 3 gears u can shift into. Some have a overdrive and have 4 gears
Is there a clutch or you just shift
Austin Robertson no clutch. It's originally an automatic transmission.
It's an automatic gear box with a manual valve body. So no clutch, you just manual shift through the gears.
But is there some that require a clutch pedal to start or reverse? I've heard some say that just diff models I'm assuming
@@614XJ No clutch, there is a torque converter doing its job.
Is there a way to add an overdrive gear or something so that when your just cruising you can manage highway speeds a little better?
+SixGunSled yes but it is about 3k for one gear. Quite expensive
John Doc yeah I hear ya.
SixGunSled gear vendors overdrive
And insanely expensive
I just got a 2017 1LE. Is there a TH400 that will fit a 6 gen? I have a procharger and header back exhaust coming soon and I'm interested in doing a tranny swap to something like your set up
+SixGunSled rpm Motorsports nc would do it for u no prob
great video even if driving it on the street is kinda boring. keep the videos coming man. can't wait for the next
What's your rpms at 50mph?
what rear gear ?
Get a dog box trans man you'll luv it its 4 speed
where did u get the rollcage done ?
or did u do it yourself
+Brandon J rpm Motorsports nc. I have a video build series on it
who said you had to go 55? a sign..?
His transmission and the limited 3rd gear
Something was about to blow up
Do you have a overdrive on your 400 transmission?
+ccook2828 no just 3 gears
your accent is pure saskatchewan depot
What the hell is that vibration/whinning sound from like 5:35 to 6:00? That would drive me insane.
Could be the style of gears
My Chevy Cruze has the same steering wheel!
I've heard the turbo 400 robs some HP which is lost through the hydraulic coupling that does not lock like the later transmissions do. How much I don't know. But with that, of course you get extra torque. This tranny wouldn't be so bad with an overdrive gear.
get a gear vendors its a hefty price but worth it they say
Download one of those gps speedometers, some even track your 0-60.
+John Dobson that's a good idea!
I used it for a year on my bug lol, worked great. Have fun with your race car.
+John Dobson thanks!
LOL I just so happen to watch and see the Ibis sign dude that is a 2 minute drive from my house xD.
I kid u not on the second segment of driving u drove my my house lol
How do u like manual valve body ? , do u feel it's consistent at the track
+HEMI KILLR with a bright shift light it's pretty consistent
Koo thanks I'm thnkn of going with a rmvb 80e, reason I'm asking
+HEMI KILLR yea I like shifting rather than the computer
John Doc I hear you on that lol
my manual valve body has Drive mode so i can just cruise..
Drop it back a gear plant your foot... that'll make it less boring =)
roll cage fitment to the a pillars would drive me to drink. One of my peeves, nice car tho
The cage has since been updated
I didn't know Baba Booey was into street racing...
tell me when driving a th400 when ur slowing down to a stoplight do u have to down shift to 1st or can u just keep it in 3rd?
vxptc1 when slowing down you CAN downshift if you want or just let it roll while its still in 3rd and when you stop put it back in 1st. i shift my 4l80 manual with toggle switches and i let it roll to a stop in 4th (converter unlocked) then flip solenoid B OFF (to 1st gear) doesnt hurt the trans at all.
throw it in neutral
Loving the car build. Those seats don't look very comfortable, lol...
+Stretchs WS6 they actually are. Not on like an hour drive but for short trips they are pretty nice
5:09 there would be no speedo in that new of a car I have a ap1 honda s2k and it doesn’t even have speedo
That head camra sick with the video
How is it boring they are bloody insane transmissions
I think he was trying to say as in casual driving terms. He kinda has a point since 3 gears with no O/D limits his mpg unless he sends it in highways with a terrible mpg.
what are the rpm numbers in 3rd ?
+Ian Mcfadden around 2300rpm going 55
John Doc lmfao
Go to there page type in th400 they don’t have them listed lol
damn i wouldn’t put that on a street car
awesome video
What shifter is that?
+Devon Vela b&m street bandit
Gear Vendors od time?
You look like a badass version of faze apex
Much love from West Palm Beach 💪💪💪
Gear vendors o/d needed 👍
roll cage is super trash. Looks like a "one size fits all" kit but doesnt fit the car.
+Noise Technician cut that shit out and put a new cage in it lol check a newer video lol
ok I seen the new cage with the gussets and all. Very nice.
Hope to see you at galot man what area are you from
+Noah Stuart anger is where I'm located
John Doc well damn IDK how I haven't seen the car out around before I'm from Fuquay
Noah Stuart just moved back about a month ago
Like the camaro I have a 3rd Gen have a good one JW
If you have 373 gears a th400 is fine.
Awesome content!
Only good for racing or short distance driving
Why dosent your speedo work
Sounds so horrible just stays in the same gear 😭
hey you live by me
it wins allot of races i think…
auto wins races
It stays at 3rd ??
The car continues to moves at 3rd as the transmission has 3 gears, with a direct drive and the absense of an overdrive/4th gear.

Boring. This guy is clueless..A stick is for slow cars and a th400 is for fast cars. End of story.
This is helpful 👍🏼
