I think that Iida is autistic. If you look at his hand motions, what appears to be forced eye contact, and the fact that his special interest is to be just like his brother, to the point where he would want to commit murder, and the fact that he obsessively does everything he can to just be like his brother, maybe as a way to ear respect from his family?

Yes, Iida and Tsuyu are the two characters who seemed especially neurodivergent to me! Iida also takes things very literally, and also seems to have trouble controlling his emotional response (either he comes off as a bit robotic or overwhelmingly emotional). He is also very loud.

As an Autistic person, Im surprised I didn't think about this. I myself have done very similar things to what Midoriya has and they are all things like stims and obsessions with one particular thing at a time. It actually makes me feel more represented, knowing that there is a main character in a show I really like that is very similar to myself.

I do believe this character and I aren’t so much different because we were both bullied growing up I don’t necessarily have a special interest like Deku with hero’s but we also have freckles and shy up when we are near a certain person we like I know it isn’t cannon that him and Uraraka like each other romantically but in real life I did act a lot like him when he would be near Uraraka by being too nervous to really get any words out I thought we were alike in the sense that we both were bullied before but we are clearly a bit more alike to each other than I originally intended in my own personal opinion he’s a great representation also I notice that just like me who has sensory issues to any loud sound Deku probably has it too I’ve seen the way he looks when Bakugou uses his explosions near him and that’s probably true although that was only in a couple of episodes I can’t specifically confirm this to be fact or cap also like Deku with the rocking when he was younger apparently my ways of stimming I don’t know if you can say this counts as it but it is so much tapping but I have adapted and I don’t usually do that it’s changed into leg movements or whatever but I’m not usually doing it a lot it’s just when I get bored or I’m sitting somewhere for a while like in a waiting room somewhere

@@mr.dickbutttheog2064 I do that exact thing he does 24/7 awesomely enough we both have freckles although I have way more than 8 and also I have light and dark brown based freckles and I have like a million I even have one on my right pinky finger and throughout parts of my arms and a big fat one on my right part of my back I think I’ve also been bullied til I finished high school but just like Deku I still was able to have been close to people I went to school with it was possible once when I was much younger and lastly again in high school although now a days I sadly been drifted apart from the people I knew through contact including one of them who I liked more than a friend but I’m just thankful that even though I do have tendencies to speak on my thoughts and everything like Deku does my family is still patient enough to deal with that trait of mine however my 13 year old brother still hates that about me and he makes others feel bad if they do something wrong and ask are you autistic which I take offense because I am actually autistic and that’s not how anyone on the spectrum should be treated and of course whenever something goes wrong like I can’t find what I want right then and now I right away go into anger and frustration and be upset the same way Deku does except I don’t just shut down and look off into the distance the way he reacts I only do it when someone I know brings up a shameful and embarrassing time that I don’t want to answer about I also have selective mutism I guess since I won’t reply to someone if I don’t think of anything correct to say back if I do know how to reply to something someone said then I respond

Honestly, as an autistic person watching MHA, even I didn't consider the idea of him kicking with his quirk because like him I was like "Heroes Punch, duh", neither of us even considered using more than just punches in a fight, then you've got the fact that he's so obsessed with being like All Might that he probably hyperfocused on making his punches good because "I'm using One for All, it's All Might's Quirk, He only punched, which means I have to punch" which doesn't make any sense unless you're the one thinking it

Yeah I realize Deku and I are totally in the spectrum I don’t know what level spectrum but I know it’s not severe for either of us since we aren’t none verbal for one we have a hard time getting someone we like spending time with to be all buddy buddy with us we both have freckles, curly hair, our hair colors are elemental colors of nature because brown and green are part of nature after all,Dekus interest may be heroes but for me it’s animals and just like his will to save people I want to keep animals from drying although I may not reach my dream like he is working for we also tend to talk to our own selves so much it’s so much of a habit for me that my mom constantly tells me to stop like all might with Deku although in a way I’m kinda like in real life Deku and my mom is kinda like my all might I’m terms of guiding me to fit in with the rest of the world and like Deku in middle school I feel like a straight up outsider who’s never gonna get the opportunity to start adulting like people my age already have been doing I need the ability to drive in handy but I’m never gonna get the chance because no one trusts that I’ll be ok and won’t crash into anything I also feel I’m never gonna get to work like anyone my age has been doing longer than me it’s too late in the game for me to start progressing at the pace of everyone else my age

I related to Deku’s interview scene with My Lady a lot. (In case anyone doesn’t remember he is very socially anxious and stiff while she is talking to him at the beginning, but when she brings up All Might and Deku’s Delaware smash he suddenly starts rambling with confidence and excitement!) I do the same thing when I’m talking to new people, and that’s often how I made friends growing up whether it be a book series or my art/animation!

    @kaizren7305 3 роки тому +61

Great video! I've always HCed Deku as autistic and it's wonderful to see someone else lay it out so plainly to see!
I still think Deku is a very inspirational character, it's a story of how All Might saw potential in him and decided to believe in him. Given the chance, Deku could be an amazing hero, the only thing he lacked was a quirk. To me, MHA is a story of how everybody has potential, and that quirks seem to be a metaphor for "privilege" or something to that effect.
Though the metaphor would probably be more relevant to real life if all people with quirks in MHA could share it with another like how All Might does.

My headcanon is that Hatsume Mei is autistic, as someone on the spectrum, I see myself in Mei. The lack of understanding when it comes to how others' perceive failure or my own accomplishments, not realizing people's (apparently obvious) discomfort, short attention span, or even not showing interest for or putting in effort into things I don't like. Hatsume, despite the sports festival being her best shot at getting her business up and running in the future, barely even tried to show off. She did the bare minimum and then just quit, that's a mood for a lot of things in my life

Done very similar things like this, being on the Autism Spectrum myself.
I tend to lose it in a fanboy way when im talking about something i really, really like.
And i tend to stim when im nervous or overstimulated, such as biting my fingers, wiggling them, looking at my phone, and repeating funny cartoon lines.

Regarding stims: I think a lot of it got channeled into working out when Izuku got his powers. Notable examples being the hand grip strengthener he squeezes while studying, and doing arm curls with dumbbells while thinking in his room.

i've noticed times where when Deku would get excited about something, he'd stim with his hands a little.
Two examples i can currently remember is during that one Christmas episode, where he tells Bakugo that they can be heroes together.
The other, i think, was while he was talking with Sir Nighteye? Idunno, he was standing in front of a door, got really excited, zoomed up to whoever he was talking to and stimmed with his hands a bit.
That's all i remember at the moment tho

  • @DemonWolfLov45
    @DemonWolfLov45 Рік тому +2

Also I agree with idea that Deku only really saved anyone because all might gave him ofa, and sure he needed to work his body so it wouldn't be blown apart, but thinking in term of quirkless being a 'disability' that's like working out for three months and expecting an amputee to regrow their missing limb

I’m autistic and it’s starting to become a joke that I’m just Deku without the crying and green hair. One thing I wanted to point out that I thought should have been mentioned is that Deku is usually very quiet, which is easy to forget as almost 90% of his dialogue is in his head, which makes his actions while he’s thinking super intensely probably look weird to everyone else. I thought your perspective on his obtaining One For All was interesting, and it was one I hadn’t thought of before. My interpretation of it was always that because he got the Quirk so late he has not only a steeper learning curve than his classmates but an entirely different one too thanks to the unique nature of One for All, which I have always related to because even though I’m “smart” I always did somewhat poorly in school until now (because I’m in college studying my special interest) because my learning curve was so different than my classmates due to my autism and I would get frustrated at not getting what seemed to be easy for everyone one else and had to develop new workarounds and different ways and strategies to succeed, a lot like Deku. Another interesting point when you said people might be mean about your headcanons is that being neurodivergent isn’t as talked about in Japan, so the awareness about things like autism is low. I think I’ve rambled too much but tldr is that I really liked your video and it made me happy

    Autistic here
Deku not having the same stims once hes older or growing out of them is actually common he likely has other stims that are more passive in nature and come of as thinking because it's pen tapping or rubbing his chin ext its not uncommon for them to mask when interacting he also rematches the same videos later on too still at least from what i think
Autistics also tend to have insane pain tolerance so him breaking fucking bones and getting hurt so often is also an autistic trait he simply doesn't feel nearly as much pain as he should.

Here's my essay on Mafuyu. Also Given spoilers. I have autism and I'm of average intelligence. I do have learning difficulties with math and science but I excel at everything else. There's also those of higher IQ that don't have any learning difficulty but social difficulty, understanding people and what to say etc. Yes I shouldn't take this so seriously because it's an anime character but still. I can relate to how Mafuyu behaves in the anime.
    A. Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts "Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions."
His social approach reminds me of myself. We also see short and vague responses like you said. I think like OP said, it could be because both autism and the abuse.
"Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction, ranging, for example, from poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication."
What Mafuyu has: poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication and total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication. Of course autistic people do have facial expressions but usually Mafuyu usually has the same poker face on which is normal for me too. Unless I'm doing my special interest or talking about my special interest, if someone has a pleasing voice, or I'm around my favourite person or my mom is usually the only time I smile. If I smile or laugh outside of that, it's usually a mask. I'm a female and females tend to put on masks more than males. We don't see Mafuyu with any type of masking. Idk about the manga but maybe he could have been masking in the past but after Yuki's death, his brain can't be bothered with it anymore.
"Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, ranging, for example, from difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts; to difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers."
That OVA episode is a great example of this. Normally people would understand Uenoyama was jealous but Mafuyu didn't. In seems in his childhood and high school he had difficulty making friends. In childhood, it was thanks to Yuki he has more friends. In high school, Yuki's guitar and music was able to start the friendship. Mafuyu isn't the type to be friends or chat with his classmates. Friendships only with a precious person or friendships through special interest only. That also relates to me.
    B. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, as manifested by at least two of the following, currently or by history
"Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech (e.g., simple motor stereotypies, lining up toys or flipping objects, echolalia, idiosyncratic phrases)."
Playing the guitar obsessively counts as repetitive motor movements and repetitive use of object
"Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns or verbal nonverbal behavior (e.g., extreme distress at small changes, difficulties with transitions, rigid thinking patterns, greeting rituals, need to take same route or eat food every day)."
We can't see this in the anime as well. 99% sure he doesn't have this or it's not shown
"Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (e.g, strong attachment to or preoccupation with unusual objects, excessively circumscribed or perseverative interest)." "Girls may have fewer restricted interests and repetitive behaviors than boys do, and may have more socially acceptable types of interests."
I see music as his special and restricted interest. Due to his childhood, he probably did not have anything to even make his special interest. He needed a lot of time to recover from the abuse in his childhood so that was all his brain did. Once he got into middle school, it seems he took interest in Yuki's band and he would randomly hum. Now from high school until the end, I don't think music will leave Mafuyu, no matter what. Mafuyu's is definitely on the more normal side of special interest, music.
My special interest are video games, anime, reading and learning about animals. Those are the same hobbies I strongly have since I was 7. I developed collecting clean looking bird feathers that I find around middle school I think but not to the same intensity of the above. The collecting bird feathers one is more unusual.
"Hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input or unusual interests in sensory aspects of the environment (e.g., apparent indifference to pain/temperature, adverse response to specific sounds or textures, excessive smelling or touching of objects, visual fascination with lights or movement)."
We don't have enough information on this. He said in the anime I think, "I want to confirm the heat from the lights I felt on that stage". He said something similar another time I think. So only once or twice. He often likes to touch his guitar even when he couldn't play it but above says "touching of objects" so this can't count. My sensory issues are touching certain textures, sounds, and smells
Other autism traits Mafuyu has - finding it hard to understand what others are thinking or feeling (That OVA episode when Uenoyama was jealous and angry) - youth with autism spectrum disorder report lower self-esteem than youth without autism spectrum disorder when they have reflected on it (He didn't want to join the Light Music Club and he didn't want to join Uenoyama's band because of his low self esteem) - finding it hard to make friends or preferring to be on your own (I explained this way above before) - seeming blunt, rude or not interested in others without meaning to (Mafuyu is definitely blunt, I have this problem as well) - finding it hard to say how you feel (I can describe it but often other people don't understand what I'm trying to say)
Also some autistic people have a talent, clearly Mafuyu's is for singing, like Ugetsu even said. He is a quick learner for guitar and singing, not other things. Other things are not stated.
    Mine is also singing
"Autistic women may be quieter, may hide their feelings and may appear to cope better with social situations."
Some autistic guys are like this as well, seems like Mafuyu.
"Mafuyu is considered a quiet, introverted and reserved type. He has difficulties in expressing himself and interacting with other people to the point of remaining silent and even walking or running away from situations. He is very diligent when it comes to his band such as paying attention to how they play to taking up a part-time job and being serious and committed to it. He is a quick learner regarding his musician's side.
Mafuyu shows that he is very straightforward in his style of speech and tends to take certain things literally."
I don't know how everything is literally me except that my special interest isn't music even though I love singing and have talent for it, not as good as Mafuyu though. Other than the taking up part time job part, usually autistic people will have a nightmare with their first part time job. Most autistic people are introverted if I am not mistaken, a few are extroverted.
Mafuyu doesn't express emotions 'correctly', freezes and flees when trying to express difficult emotions, struggles with finding words, tends to isolate himself, feels like he's 'blank' compared to other people, learns a single skill very quickly without anything else, has limited interested but also limited knowledge of his own taste, tends to be silent or hesitant to express himself, often doesn't answer questions at all, avoids eye contact (although this is cultural), doesn't question when people tell him to do things..."
"He has social troubles where he sometimes repeats sentences, doesn't always look in the eye, seems emotionalless most of the time. Also has problems with making decisions like his favorite music genre or what song lyrics he wants to write."
Pretty much these are all traits of autism and I can relate to Mafuyu's personality hugely. It's not that I feel blank compared to others but I feel really different compared to others. I feel like an alien in human skin. Argh I hate that word "alien". The word feels gross and gooey.
Also of course I'm no psychologist, just insight from an autistic person

I rlly wish they went with the og concept of deku being a quirkless hero with support items. I actually was gonna work on a fic wherein he went to the support course instead of the hero one and they collaborate a lot more with the hero course regarding weapons , hero costumes, side kicks etc etc. It would be interesting if UA made support students have an option to be side kicks for hero course students but that might be a stretch.
In the fic i was gonna work on (calling it my support academia BAI😭) im gonna mostly make his special interest an even more prominent trait . The show did alot with this tho im just putting it in a new way. I feel like deku could be an inventor like hatsume, his analytical quality can really be useful as well as noticing small details. Midoriya was actually a salesman for hero support items in the original "My Hero" oneshot, so your idea does kinda fit. Horikoshi got rid of the og concept because he thought it'll be unrealistic for Deku to become the greatest hero with just support items. In order to make it work, he'd have to basically rewrite Deku's entire character from the start or change his future. The first option is that Deku will have to start out like Batman or All Might, who are already ridiculously strong even without powers, instead of spending 15 years as the weaker-than-average underdog. The other option is to change his future, where he'd just be a support student like you said and he won't become the number 1 hero.
Still, I do love the idea of prototype Deku being quirkless and I prefer it as a concept. But at the same time, I can't see how the "extremely weak guy to greatest hero" arc will work without a quirk or change him into an overpowered "regular" person like Batman. I also do wish that UA students from other courses wouldn't be as segregated. I'd love to see support students actually having more contributions to hero work and teaming up with heroes

I don't think you're reaching at all w/ Deku, but I know that many people have dunked on me for saying Aizawa is Autistic so lmk what you think
    SPOILERS FOR HIS BACKSTORY
So, Aizawa has been known to have such a strict routine that he has to plan every minute of every day practically. He works night shifts as a hero and day shifts as a teacher, so he has to sleep in between with breaks and free time.
He's frequently seen touching his hair or the back of his neck, this seems to be one of the only visual stims he has.
His expressions are usually seen as scary or uncanny, with many fans saying "someone needs to teach him how to smile". Not to mention his resting face looking vaguely annoyed(even though to me he just looks normal lol)
He seems to have a special interest in cats, in various medias having his interest lured because of it. Or better worded as "I'm not interested unless cats are involved". He has official merch of a cat café stamp card where he had not missed a single day there. He also frequently buys cat magazines, saves cats in his free time and follows cats around in his spare time. He likely doesn't own one because of his constant time crunching.
During his time attending UA highschool as a student, he has always been seen bringing strange meals to school and deprecating on himself because he didn't understand how to fit in, deeming himself "powerless." He has also seen to have low empathy, with saying his opinions with no interest for how it'll affect another person even before the heaps of trauma he suddenly goes under.
He tells Midnight that "maybe she should be(ashamed of her outfit)", to which, his ironically autistic coded best friend casually and with a passive and positive tone that nobody cared about Aizawa's opinion. Aizawa didn't seem to take any offense, just seemed to be annoyed that he was brushed off.
Present Mic doesn't seem to mind how grumpy Aizawa can be, in fact, he seems to register it as normal behavior for him(Ironically, also autistic coded but that's for another time.) Aizawa insults Mic a lot, but he shows no signs of hatred towards mic at all- instead he has a confirmed close relationship to mic. He's seen threatening to hit Mic and he does flinch, implying that Aizawa does play like that. Aizawa stands in solidarity with Mic over their shared loss, and supports him when they both grieve, the entire time not losing his monotonous tone.
He rarely does lose that monotonous tone, as the only time we ever hear him yell is when he's in anguish/or in immediate urgency.
He is unbiased towards all of his students except for Shinsou and Tsu. Tsu has never been reprimanded by Aizawa, nor talked down to, and has never received any type of negative comment from him which is very rare. Shinsou, in the light novels, has said that he wished Aizawa was as strict with him as he is with the rest of 1-A. Both of which are autistic coded, wow! /S /lh
He seems to be hyposensitive as usually Mic's large volume doesn't always bother him(save for a few moments), not to mention the massive amounts of pain tolerance and the need to stick to relentless routines.
In a drama CD, Midnight drunkenly states that Aizawa "must be boring in bed," to which his response is: "I sleep in a sleeping bag." A comment that would normally get an angry response from such a grumpy seeming guy, but Aizawa responds literally.
This isn't even how deep it goes, I have a lot more on Aizawa and he's autistic I make the rules. He's my special interest and I get to decide!!!!!!!!!!!! I have dedicated all of my hours to this man!!!!!!

@@michalelkin-bronner13 he's certainly low empathy - but the logicality feels more like an autistic comfort need. Shouta is CPTSD-coded, so having everything be logical makes perfect sense. It's stated in the light novels the reasons for his practicality are pretty much his own perception that he doesn't deserve basic things like good meals, nice looking clothes or anything that would give comfort. He has a lot of guilt and takes on a lot of responsibility, to the point where he also canonically has an eating disorder. - it's brought up at least twice - once in the book and once in one of the games.

It's totally possible you could be, however autism is a very complex thing and can't be explained in a short headcanon video. It's totally possible to be similar to/relate to autistic characters (although none of these videos contain canon autistic characters, just ones I see that way) without being on the spectrum yourself.
