  • I came up with this when I wanted to stop the little tadpoles being sucked into my little solar powered pond pump. It works and you can put it together in 5 mins. To clean it just remove it , unscrew the outlet and run a hose through it. Sorted.

      Cool, good enough for a small pump. To clean it I just take it off and run a hose through from the inside!

      Yes, good to recycle! You could easily scale up with bigger bottles, 1 litre, 2 litre and ladies stocking over it!

    The tube from the bottle filter is connected to the inlet of a 12v water pump which is giving me a fountain!

      and the pump runs from a small solar panel. £10.

    I’ve watched this a few times now and I just don’t see how you’re getting the water to fountain out like that.

      The tube from the bottle filter is connected to the inlet of my 12 volt pump which is in the other bottle. It says in the video I have a solar powered pump? Any filter you have needs to be connected to a pump! 2:51

    Clever. If you put fish (goldfish for example) and pond plants, you probably wouldn't need a filter as you'd be mimicking what Mother Nature does.

    How do I make a small hose circulate the water in my small pond. Sucking the water through the hose isn't working 😒

      I want to use a piece of hose for a small water feature.
      Yanno how people use a hose to drain petrol from a car haha same thing.

      Hi mate, yes, I have 3 solar panels connected to pumps. A filter like this works well with small pumps.

    extend the vid to show us how well the mesh filters the pond for interest. one can use ladies stocking as well for very fine filtration. if the containers is above the water line then the mesh will only clog on the wet section filling up the bottle with debris to the top maybe before having to clean it. like a cartridge filter. if a larger bottle with large openings is used then the water will pass very slowly via the mesh , bigger hole slower water velocity, less dirt escapes etc. will try a version of this.

      Thanks for the interesting comments. Useful. It can also be scaled up by using say a one litre bottle.

      Green ponds are a different ball game, can be lots of reasons for that! Too much sun, too many nutrients, etc. Mine was green for two years until the plants really took hold!

    Hi Bobflyman
    What specific pump and solar panel do you use? So many on the market, not sure how good they are, very small pond don't need anything too sophisticated, just something that does the basics and lasts.

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  2 роки тому

      Panels I use are 10 watt Ecoworthy, nice panel with an aluminium frame. amzn.to/3z3OKL4
      Aquarium pumps is a more difficult question. For that filter I originally used a small 12v pump I found online that had a spigot both ends, but lately , I have used these and put them in a bottle style filter. amzn.to/3a7fIa8 and these 5v amzn.to/3wTX6Co
      And a voltage regulator I use a thing called a BEC and regulate to 5v or 9v www.hobbyrc.co.uk/matek-micro-bec-5v9v-adjustable?gclid=CjwKCAjws8yUBhA1EiwAi_tpESkQkkXKVx4OmdksvMINO0bUTGLvs0tI5ZQgf3rehbQ-7MMV9vC_cRoCmxkQAvD_BwE
      You need to make some kind of spray head of course for a fountain but I get a good 3 feet height of fountain in good sunlight!

    Does this also circulate the water?

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  2 роки тому +1

      It's sucking the water into the little pump and spraying it out in a different place so I'd say yes! And it aerates too. Alright for a small pond.

    Looks like a good one that, that panel looks like about a 30 watter? If you got a cheapo solar charge controller and a old lead acid battery It could go 24/7

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  4 роки тому

      I used to use an old motor cycle lead acid battery, about a 4 amp, a 12v timer and ran the pump 2 hours a day. Battery died last winter. Not enough sun. It's a 25 year old panel and panels in those days were nowhere near as efficient as the new monocrystaline ones. I think it's probably barely 10w in full sun! Voltage got too low and battery would not recover. I just bought a new small one, 2.1 amps. The pump draws 750 mA so even at full charge that's barely 3 hours run time. (I am an electrical engineer by training. ;) ) With a timer it would barely run the pump for 2 hours a day . 12v reg and 12v timer etc. I have even tried a 5v pump which meant using 2 regs . Panel down to 12v then a 7805, 5v reg. A 5v reg would need a massive heat sink to reduce the say 15 v in bright sunlight down to 5v. I just bought a cheapo floating solar fountain, £12 ebay and in full sun with a tiny little panel it's almost as good as my big panel. Sooo, to get to the point, it prompted me to try connecting my panel direct and it has been a great success! I have now got a 12v reg chip on the panel so that my small pump will not ever get whacked out with say 15v, but in my tests it still runs at say 6 or 7 v. Sooo, the pump is now working well every time the sun comes out, and still working half bore in cloud! Sorry for the long explanation but I have spent hours playing with different ways of using that old panel! I bet a modern smaller £20 panel would be better?

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  4 роки тому +1

      PS I've got one big panel on my motorhome , £100 job, and a split reg that keeps 3 big batteries up. Maybe I'll invest in a smaller, but more efficient panel for my little pump!

      Hi, I bought on e bay believe it or not and it was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand! Gunnera manicata. This is where I bought, at the time £3.99 09/02/2019 Mine was probably smaller than this linked. Funny how after 66,000 views you're the first person who doesn't realise that it's just positioned on the rock to show it assembled before it went in the water. And nobody else asked your question? 😮
      The other pop bottle top you can see just holds the sprinkler head for my little pump.

    See that green algae colour. This idea will never ever keep that clear. It is just a pre filter for the pump. But barely functional. Just enough so it is able to get water through

    • @bobflyman
      @bobflyman  3 роки тому +1

      It wasn't intended to clear algae. You need UV lamps and sophisticated systems for that. It's just a simple DIY filter for small pumps to stop them from getting blocked with crap. It's been working for 7 months and the pump has never been blocked so it's still working! And it runs from a solar panel so runs for many hours whenever the sun is shining. (It's not intended for a big water flow and I haven't claimed it is either. Though you could scale up by using a one litre size bottle. Or a 2 gallon plastic jerrican!) Any filter needs cleaning occasionally anyway, and if it does, you remove it, take off the cap and run a hose through from the inside. The green colour? It was a new pond and the algae has now cleared because I have enough weed in it. No chemicals and no fancy UV light filters!
