thank you! Mine started this as soon as I used with drywall so assumed it was a build up issue but didn't feel like taking apart just yet. No problem if it's this easy.

Hasn't happened to mine yet but I'm saving this video just in case it does. Thanks for sharing the easy breakdown.
I'm really kind of surprised at how easy ryobi made to repair it.

Thanks for sharing this! I just fixed my husband's multi tool and he'll probably return the new one that he bought. Great tutorial!

Had the same problem with the switch, however it was not dust. The wiring to the motor was not placed completely behind the barrier and caused some pressure on the slider. At the other end of the motor, when the slider was pushed over the endcap, it hit that slight hump in the cap. I tilted the motor out of its frame and wrapped electrical tape over that hump to create a smooth surface on which the slider could move. The slider is still a bit stiff, but it does work. Thanks for the video, it made my problem easy to fix.

In the times we live, what is frightening is how many would not take the time to solve this BUT, how many would never be thoughtful enough to share the process and, save the tool! Most would stick it in a yard sale for 2 bucks or, just throw it away and buy a new one! Then soon repeat the cycle. 😖
Personally I don’t own that tool BUT, now, I may pick one up! My wife has some ryobi tools in her craft room I, why not?! I have a corded porter cable and it’s okay but, not really fond of it. I like the light on this and, the variable speed is a huge plus!! Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks for this. My wife's started acting up after about 4 hours of detail sanding work. It would sometimes refuse to come on and I noticed the switch seemed hard to move. Tonight I cleaned it out and it seems to be working again. Definitely seems like a design issue where dust can get into an area which stops the switch from engaging properly.
Sad part is, its only got about 5 hours total run time on it (mostly detail sanding). My bottom of the Harbor Freight (Chicago Electric Line) corded multitool has about 20 hours on it and is continuing to run well (make sure to tighten the nut every so often).

I actually bought a "for parts" unit off ebay a few months ago for $15. I just added a piece of plastic as a spacer/shim to make sure the switch would engage properly. Good as new. I used some dry graphite lube as well.

So glad I found this! Mine is having the same issue. Switch is hard to turn on and the light comes on but the motor sporadically engages. I will take it apart and clean it out and see if that helps. Is it possible to buy parts for these anywhere?
