Just picked up my "new to me " 1964 Johnson 9.5. The seller test run it in the tank and it ran great. Started and ran fine on the first pull. Wish me luck guys :)
Wow great deal for 40 bucks. Thats one clean 9.5 with low hours.Check the thermostat too would be advisable judging by the way that motor looks its probably mint. I have a video on UA-cam showing a wrench I made to loosen those thermostat covers as they can be corroded pretty bad when used in saltwater mostly and break easily prying them out. I have worked on many of them thru the years. That motor deserves a cowling paint job and new decals when you have the time Great find!...Glenn P. outboard mechanic and collector for many years.
I have a 1970 Johnson 9 1/2 I was just wondering if you knew how to diagnose the problem I have when I'm at Full Throttle for about 5 minutes it works great then after that it starts rubbing really high and has no power then I have to back the throttle off the half-throttle I was just wondering if you knew what would cause that problem
If it rolls over, and is in decent condition, probably a good deal. Like any motor of this vintage, it will likely require some work and a few new parts to be water ready.
Usually start with making sure the low speed screw and fuel circuit in the carb is clean. Might need to get the idle smooth and low enough to shift, thats if you can shift it into gear when its off and rolled over by hand
Should be available out there on amazon and ebay, biggest thing is to make sure you've got the correct year of the motor, may have to decode the serial number.
Love these old Evinrude Johnsons. I also have a 9.5 that runs great until I put the cowl on? Stumbles and dies? Its like its suffocating? Any thoughts ideas? Anyone? Thanks.
In the back of the motor, on the port side, there is a rubber 'boot' for the exhaust. When that is cracked it suffocates the motor. Also, if you are running these turtle top motors in a barrel, because of how low they sit, with the cowl on, it will pull in exhaust from the barrel. So, top off in the barrel, or run a fan on high simulating it being on the water and getting fresh oxygen.
Pretty sure amazon or ebay, you just gotta figure out the part number, and they are a common part. Sierra is a decent aftermarket brand and pretty easy to find.
I have a 65 9.5 evinrude sportswin that runs fine until you put a load over half throttle it goes to missing any ideas ? Plugs and wires are new and points are set also .020 the coils look to have been replaced but it looks like they touched the flywheel a couple times whoever did it I’m not sure carb was cleaned and cranks on first pull just under load is a no go
If when it starts cutting out, try applying the choke on a bit, if it runs better at all its likely a plugged jet or dirty adjustment screw. Never hurts to go through the carb anyways though.
@@toocheaptosmoke okay I will give it a try what if it just Boggs down when applying choke and it doesn’t matter If the cover is on or off it runs the same
The comment about the coils touching the flywheel **sometimes** could be a clue that the crank bearings are worn out. Being a 2-stroke good bearing seals are necessary to keep the crankcase sealed against air leaks. Heat & vibration under load could be causing an air leak to mess with your air/fuel mixture.
I would think they are either 1/4-20 or 5/16-18 thread, but pretty sure I used a prybar and hammer method, haha. Gotta be careful doing that though, you can damage stuff really quick if you're too rough on it.
I have this exact motor and I'm having some trouble with it. It will start but only at full throttle and as soon as I throttle down it cuts off completely. Any ideas out there for this problem
Is it smoking a ton? If so, sounds like it could be the needle/seat sticking and flooding out. If not a ton of smoke, could be low speed circuit/jet plugged up. Either one needs carb cleaning.
@@toocheaptosmoke I just bought the motor yesterday. Took apart the carb thismorning and the float needle was up side down. So I cleanee everything out really well. Took apart the fuel pump and checked everything and it looks good. Now it dose not wanna start at all. Water pump works fine and lower end is new. Everything seems right to me
@@toocheaptosmoke both of the coils were blown right out and there was pieces every where under the fly wheel and the points were farther off and apart then I've every seen. I have not idea how the guy got it to start in front of me. There was not spark at all.

How long do you think it would run on wide open throttle I’m buying one just want to know what size gas tank I should get for it. I like to take it out for at least 8 hours I won’t be running full throttle all the time but just curious what ballpark guess would be
I own 4 of those and I love them ! They are a low compression engine, 70 is ok on that one . The reason the 9.5 is around is mainly for duck hunters because of the low profile and shifter is for easy shifting when retrieving your decoys and it’s one of the first to go to 50:1 ratio on oil ! I’m working on a linkage to run 2 at a time on one controller ! You got a real nice score for $40 plus 9 for Sierra impeller and 21 for carb kit =$70 heck if I lived closer to you I’d give you $150 for it ! Lol. That should have pushed the 12ft boat about 12 mph , that’s what 17 kph ? Lol. Sounds faster in kilometers! Lol. You might be over pitched on your prop !
The 12 foot I was running didn't seem to like running on plane very well, was a bear to get out of the hole. Once up top it ran fairly well, but not sure if it was the boat or the motor holding things back? Messed with the trim settings and had that dialed in.

Hello, a common problem with these motors are the ignition coils, the plastic cracks and they short out. I would check those, then make sure the points are clean. Also watch out for any bad wires going to the kill switch button, sometimes the insulation deteriorates.
Go to amazon and order you a copy of Peter Hunn's book called The Old Outboard Book. I think I paid $9.95 for it. It will save you money and show you the versatility of Johnson/Evinrude motors. It will tell you by model # and serial # what year it is and how many were made. Yours looks to be just like the 3 I 68, 70, and 72. For $40 bucks "you stole it at that price." they will sell depending on your area warmer/colder climates . Warmer waters very cheap more hrs. on them plus the are usually seized up. Yours looks like it would be a # 2--3 out of 4 conditions.. Number 1 being the best like a show room model. In Ohio you could get what ever some (craigslist sellers) think its worth just because its a "OLD ANTIQUE" but relistly $350- $400 depending on hrs. But nine out of 10 times no one knows useless its got a hobbs meter on it. (Tracks running time).
It deserves a trip to the junkyard. The era of dirty 2-strokes are over, they pollute the waterways and expose the user to toxic emissions. A 2 stroke emits aroud 13 more pollutants than a 4-stroke.

Could be running out of fuel, air leak in the fuel line, blocked tank vent, fuel pump getting weak, etc.
I got one today, mint condition perfect paint on the cover and everything from the scrapyard for $7
That was a score!
Great video
Could you pls add link for the water pump replacement kit and carburetor kit thanks so much sir.
Great vid man. Cant wait to get mine going

Just picked up the same unit today I am wondering what do those two wires do and what do they go to?
I had an evinrude 1965 9/12 it had lots of power planes my 12ft sea king it did over 23 mph.
9.5 horse power is everything....compared to rowing.
Ain't that the truth!
I have someone who wants to sell me a 91/2 Johnson motor for $100 but has been sitting in a garage for 8years should I take the risk ?
If it rolls over, and is in decent condition, probably a good deal. Like any motor of this vintage, it will likely require some work and a few new parts to be water ready.
Ok what what parts do you recommend me change of jump . And should I offer him $50 ?
Can you tell me how to get that same carb rebuild kit?
This guys dialogue is me working on motors lol
Back in the that time any thing under 10 hp didn’t have to be registered
In Ohio, only 10 HP and up needs a title :)
I just picked up a comparable Model Evinrude. What fuel mixture and oil is best?
That's something that will get you a million different opinions, I usually run 40:1 with a decent oil.
I noticed the timing is out of sync with the carb linkage. Adjust that and you'll get more power from it.
I'll have to check that out next time I use it, it was a bit sluggish when running.
Hey man mine won't idle well and when I adjust the idle knob it won't shift lol. Any idea?
Usually start with making sure the low speed screw and fuel circuit in the carb is clean. Might need to get the idle smooth and low enough to shift, thats if you can shift it into gear when its off and rolled over by hand

No physical obstruction or insulating foam choking off the carb? Also make sure the cowl isn't pushing on wires or something causing a misfire?
