Xiaomi Mi Band 3 review!
Like almost always Xiaomi have different versions of a product - to be sold in China, and to be sold internationally. Both versions are already available on most of the webstores.
Unboxing experience is fine - good looking box. The quality of the band seems to be good. Not sure what the OLED display is covered with - but didn’t scratch as much as I expected. Strap is similar to the Mi Band 2, but my hope to have the same size (respectively straps) were dashed as soon as placed them side by side.
Before I get into the review - there are two easy to follow steps in order to switch from Chinese to English:
1. Get the mi fit app version - www.dropbox.com/s/tw7eqm8r8bz...
2. Run it. It will discover the band and will ask you to update the firmware. That would be it - a few minutes and you will have the fitness tracker in English.
As for the rest of the hardware - you are getting a larger screen that can show more data, more functions, waterproof rating for swimming and version with NFC support. Battery is also larger - now 110mAh , compared to 70 for the predecessor. But the autonomy time has decreased a bit because of all the new features. The smarter it gets, the more power it consumes.
I mentioned there are new features - and you will find a lot of them. The display is now touch. Swiping vertically and horizontally will guide you through the menus, and to activate some of the functions you need to apply long press.
There is an easy to view summary of your activities. Much better structured than on Mi Band 2. Heart rate measurement is also available.
Weather forecast is also there - you can check it for the next three days, and there is a way to specify the location manually.
The menu called “more” is grouping the rest of the features - stopwatch, about section, screen config and silent options. You have a choice among a few watch faces. I love the silent option - in fact there’s no need to touch it - put your phone into silent mode and the band goes silent too!
Good news is that Google Fit sync works out of the box, however there is no Strava integration module.
Because there are a lot of you wondering whether to get the Mi Band 3 or 3, here are my thoughts.
- Build quality of the 3 is slightly better. Honestly - I do prefer the design of the 2. And right now an advantage of mi band 2 is the huge variety of straps and other crazy accessories.
- For the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 it will be more difficult to have a screen protector and may look ugly. The display is glossier, but still better visible. Just like the 2 - it has almost zero visibility on direct sunlight, especially if you have sunglasses. So it is very suitable for people that spend a lot of time indoors and in offices.
- It offers some new awesome features - silent mode that is synced with your phone, continuous heart rate (if I may call it like that), weather forecast, NFC option, touch controls and watch faces.
- There’s waterproof rating and the band 3 is good for swimming.
- looking at the strap design - it looks like after continuous usage, you won’t have any troubles with the watch popping out of the strap, which is very common for the Mi Band 2 after 6-7 months of usage.
The only obvious downgrade is the slightly shorter battery life, despite the larger battery capacity.
And looks like Xiaomi have granted themselves another very easy win against everything else you can buy at the price of around 30 dollars. So - yeah - overall a decent upgrade to the mi band 2, at the same price.

If you ask me not alot of function and design to upgrade the function typically the same just the ban design change a little.
Just got one in HK. compared to the band 2, it's a bit bulkier, I don't expect the rounded bubble shape glass to stay scratch free for long and also it's a dust magnet. Still, it's a good buy at 20usd or so.

Most of the sound is recorded with the Aputure A-lav mic - quite an affordable option. Unfortunately the area where I record is not sound-proof and there's bad echo that is hard to mask. But a lavalier mic is the best option in that case... Please note that if connected directly to the camera, it has lower quality compared to a connection to a sound recorder (lately I use a lot the Zoom H1 - an old, but gold device).
There's also a studio microphone utilized from time to time - Auna USB condenser mic.

Bip is not water resistant. I have bip and its lcd just burned effect after water from shower gets into it. Find for replacement lcd. But no chance

Anyone can help ? i got mi band 3 and the mi fit app installed and had already turn on heart rate monitoring to 5 min interval. However i have nothing showing up on my status tab in Mi Fit apart from steps. I had downloaded Mi Band Tool, and that app does show the heart rate monitoring correctly. I am on Pixel 2 XL.

It is done via the MiFit app - and if you allow it access to the location settings, it will automatically discover your town/city and start showing the forecast.

It doesn't support continuous heart rate, unfortunately. And no Strava integration :(

Hi Vipin! There is no hardware difference. Just the box - the chinese one has chinese text on top of it. Switching from the Chinese rom to English happens within a few minutes.
I don't think this one is suitable for people working outdoors. Better search for a device with reflective display, like the Amazfit Bip.

Why would they use an OLED display that is impossible to read in direct sunlight? Don't people normally use fitness trackers while outside, and not sitting at their desk?
Great comparison btw. I was thinking of getting a Mi Band 3, but now I see most people say the 2 is better. The 3 does look too bulky for me. The new features are nice to have, but not really necessary IMO.
Yeah, I also believe these fitness trackers are good even with basic functionality.
They are more or less watches for office people :-) If you work at an office the display is well visible and you seem to track your activity :D

Hi Imke. Try setting your phone's language to english. If it doesn't work - check the link to the Mi Band 3 forums - there are plenty of additional ROMs available.

You should be fine buying it from them. Most of the webstores have the chinese and international versions both - just the price is different.

That would be the 3 - it has newer and better hardware which is more accurate. But in the end, the 2 is also a great choice!

I bought the mi band 3 but quickly reverted back to the mi band 2. The band 3 is too bulky. I think the menu is too confusing, got me swiping left and right / up and down unable to quickly find what I am looking for and last but not least totally unacceptable that the band language can't be forced to English not even in the global version if the smartphone is not set to English too.
Jos Quinten , thanks a lot for raising your concerns and sharing your experience. At some point it is a good idea to rethink whether we need all these new features.
I in fact tend to like them, and got used to the interface for less than a week. But still like the mi band 2 outlook better :)
@@TechMishka I looked at both, and chose the Mi Band 2 over the global version of the 3. The 2 has a slimmer profile, and does everything I need from an activity tracker. I bought a metal Mijobs bracelet and I can hardly notice the Mi Band on my wrist. When it needs to be charged, I can simply pop it out of the bracelet, because it is secured by four magnets.

Hi Bhai, it lets you read the whole message. Letters are pretty small though.
Do we need to do anything for making the display up. I just unboxed it and not seeing anything on screen... I pressed button several time.. Connected to charger but display is not coming up.
I tried to connect it with mi app and its not geting connected.
We should charge first :-) Charging lits up the display no matter what.
It happened with me too. I just cleaned the charging points on both the charger and the mi band, started charging it and the band started working.
Hi ! How much range is needed for it to work when the phone is connected? Actually I've never had any Mi Band before so I ain't biased towards any model, so which Mi Band would be the best? And I don't care about look of the band.
The Mi band 3 has a little more functions, but I tend to like the Mi Band 2 a little more because of the battery life.
As for the connectivity - it is bluetooth, and when there is direct visibility it will react within 10-15 meters.

Hm, that is weird. One thing that usually prevents from finding it are location services - if they are off. Make sure they are on on your Samsung device.

The only FLAW that mi bands have is that, the capsule has to be removed for every charge....
if at all if like magnetic charge is placed right below the heart rate sensor or so and the capsule need not be removed for every charge then MI BAND 3 would be the BEST FITNESS TRACKER in market not even one of the best......... but I am pretty happy with the features

well if it has to be charged without removing xiaomi has to put the charging nodes outside the band which will make it less water proof and would not be suitable in sea swimming where the salt will accumulate on the metal nodes

Yes, it is better.
And how do you know that? Do you know the exact hardware part that was upgraded? There's no reason for it to be better unless the sensor part is different. But it doesn't look different to me.
THe sensor is different, however it is not yet disclosed what kind of hardware is inside. The change is slight, but is a step up.

If you don't connect all the times you are missing some features. But you can still use the watch.
If you are asking whether you have to manually reconnect every now and then - not needed.

There should be a resistor to protect it. I'd go for the slow charging if time is not an issue - the slower you charge, the more prolonged battery life you will have.

Yes, that is an option, and it is configurable - the MiFit app allows you to fine-tune it.

I am not quite sure if I understand the way of functioning of the Mi Band 3. Can I disconnect the BT during the night when it´s tracking my sleep and heartrate? I´m not comfortable with any radiation during my sleep. I keep my phone either turned off or in airplane mode.
Hi Enes - the tracker will record your activity and synchronize with the phone when connectivity is available. The sync process is not happening in real-time, because it is quite an intensive operation which will reduce the battery life if occurring too often.
In short - feel free to put your phone in airplane mode - in the morning the tracker will send the data to the smartphone app and nothing will be lost. Most of the trackers keep a record/backlog of a few days.

Hey i bought Mi band 3 a month ago and it was working properly before i updated Mifit app to latest version after it my band starts firnware update and got cancelled and after that app wasn't able to find my band band's screen shows connect to app

Try to go to bluetooth settings and delete the mi band association and try to pair them once again.

Let's try another thing - go to app settingsa and delete the mi fit app data. Any kind of it.
Then make sure the phone's GPS is ON and try finding and pairing the band.

I still havent decided to get mi band 3 or amazfit bip. by the way i am a bit shocked and find it weird that you said that the mi band will be silent if the phone is silent. Isn't that the reason of using smartband/watch?To get notification while having the phone or silent. at least that's one of the reason i want to get one, so i can keep my phone away from me and on silent but still got notifications.

As for the silent mode - perhaps this feature is designed for people that want everything to be completely silent. I've had numerous cases where my phone was silent, however my watch wasn't, and the vibration was quite annoying for the other people in the room
The silent mode only applicable for android phone , I m using iOS and it won affect me
I use usually a Samsung Gear S3 and since I bought it I can't actually remember one day I kept my phone with sound, I do love have the notifications in my watch and mobile silent.
I'm now during the summer in a work which involves working with kids, running and playing so I asked a friend to borrow me his miband 2 and I love it. The only thing that annoys me is I can't silent it, while I'm using the phone I normally silented the gear S3, I can't do it with miband 2 so it keeps vibrating or I have to turn off the Bluetooth which annoys me.
I thinks it wouldn't be that hard to give the option in miband3 to silent it, independently from the phone

Hardware is the same. Swithing to English is not that hard. Still - if you find them at the same price, get the English version.

Yeah, just follow the steps to update to the latest firmware and it should go to English. Sometimes you have to set your phone language to be English too.

Yes, of course - a charging cable is included. There is no actual charger if that's what you are asking, but any USB based charger/port will do the trick :-)

I bought this and while driving two wheeler it is counting steps. How to stop this or this is defect in product
Doesn't sound like a faulty product - more like an algorithm issue. Try to check for a new firmware - they may adjust the counting.
If you want something basic and it just works, get the miband 3. If you don't mind dated hardware but just want a fitness tracker, get miband 2. If you're *serious* about fitness get the apple watch though it's expensive but totally worth it.
Have you tried any of the Garmin watches? While expensive, they are quite awesome about sports.

No, it is a different one. I was hoping for that too, but the form factor is different.

You can try contacting both xiaomi and Lenovo - guess it is a matter of time this to be possible.
Also, it may be related to the permissions granted to the MiFit app. Check if everything is allowed.

It relies on the GPS of your smartphone to track detailed information. If not connected, you will have only the step count and the distance count which is based on the accelerometer.
Sir does it counts the calories through out the day???? Even if ur on weight training??
It counts, but these counters use weird algorithms and are not absolutely accurate.
