I think a challenge with VO is navigating the difference between jumping between things and adding spokes to the wheel. There are a lot of different types of work and it can be tempting to focus on one in isolation, which would be like jumping to different things, especially if you start to neglect what you previously worked on. But if we are cognizant of how different disciplines can feed back into each other, we can get the benefit of adding something new while also contributing to what we’ve already worked on.
For example, learning to do character voices not only opens up animation and video game opportunities, but it can also be applied to audiobooks if you’ve been missing out on audiobooks where the customer wants distinct character voices. The catch is to consciously think about how you can transfer those new skills into audiobooks even if your coach is focused on teaching you how to do animation work. What you don’t want to do is keep your approach to audiobooks the same as it was before while treating character work as something completely separate.
