You also have to let the seal relax onto the crank after fitting for about 4 hours before starting/ moving turning the crankshaft
How can you tell if the seal is PTFE?
Rich, I'm about to install a rear main seal on my 2004 mini cooper. How do I know if its a PTFE seal as opposed to just rubber?
PTFE seal do not use a spring on the inside of the oil seal like the standard rubber ones
Thanks for the i made this mistake today and had instant failure of the crank seal live and learn just the 6 hours to strip everything off wait for new seal to be delivered then reassemble again for the 3rd time after 1st clutch blew the gearbox main seal 😂😂😂😭😭😭
Good idea to put that on the packaging no??
It is clearly written in the little instruction pamphlet that alot of tech just toss aside.
I got oil on the seal is it still good haven't installed it?
Hi Rich, great video very informative.
On a rubber seal you mentioned to put a little grease on the inner ring but do you also put it on the outside ring?
Thank you
shit, i've oiled the inner lip on all 3 of the ones ive done on my cars. guess i'll just hope and pray
How do you stretch a seal to 50% larger diameter without lube of some sort? Such as with the huge crank end on a VW/Audi 2.8L v-6??? Unless there'sa crazy seal stretch tool, I am at a loss. I'll use a ptfe lube then try to clean it off... no other options on this 01 passat
Those seals use an expansion sleeve for installation
We r manufacturer of ptfe rings. from india.
How does one know if it’s a rubber or ptfe seal?
I need to know this too
@@MrCjhsc2ever found out?
Yes. No spring no lube.
@@MrCjhsc2 preciated man
@@MOE13576 no problem
Dont get a PTFE seal i guess haha they also wear a grove in your crank too
Cummins uses PTFE seals front and rear on their B series (5.9 and 6.7 engines). Its not uncommon for these engines to run 300-400k with zero seal leakage at either end (Rocker covers... not so much) ALL seals wear a groove given enough time and operating condition. I wouldn't say that PTFE seals are any worse than rubber in that department.
I see that PTFE seals are to be installed dry. FPM seals are to be installed oiled, correct?
yes
@@pyromaniac354 I got a bit of oil on it but sprayed brake cleaner and wiped away will it still be ok?
@@PincheKriss yes.
That should be fine.
As long as it's clean of oils etc
@@PincheKriss if in doubt tho I'd just buy another seal.
A little extra money will save you pulling your engine back out again if it leaks
@@pyromaniac354 I went ahead and slapped it in. I got a good feeling bought this one. Last new one failed cause I doused it in oil
Replace a gasket 😅
