    In a morbid way this is arguably Durkins most impressive call. He was seeing and telling us what happened and he managed to not lose track of the field and was able to jump back into the race action after processing Barbaro's injury.

      But I'll given him a free pass for this one considering the circumstances

    I live in the area and remember this day well. Barbaro got a police escort and traffic was cleared along I-95 so he could get medical attention. I was touched at how people from all over the country sent Barbaro get well cards and apples. It was so touching and kind. RIP Barbaro!

    RIP Barbaro :( I remember this day very well. I don't know much about racing, but my mom does, and when he broke out of the gate before the race she was pacing in front of the TV going, "Something's not right. Something's going to happen." I wish she'd been wrong :(

      largeposterior08 every time I watch I just hope he keeps going. I keep rooting for everything to change and him to be OK. 13 years since this Preakness, and 12 years since he left us and this whole story still makes me tear up. I know a guy who's college roommate works with Michael Matz and he has said that Michael kills himself to this day for not pulling him out when he broke through the barrier. He knew then something was wrong but swallowed it and thought to himself everything will be fine he just got excited. Every time I hear thunder I think he's racing Ruffian and Eight Bells. So sad

    He would of destroyed all other horses in this race and the Belmont. He had no competition.. He will always be the triple crown winner in my heart. What a horrific tragedy. Forever Barbaro 💙😢

    • @shane.from.newzealand5353
      @shane.from.newzealand5353 Рік тому +1

      Although it is probable Barbaro would have won the race, Bernadini ran well and Barbaro would have had to expend that bit of extra energy, heading into the Belmont Stakes. This cohort of 3yos ran prior to the change in the qualification system. As you probably recall there was a very long period of time without a triple crown winner. Once the KD qualification system changed, there were suddenly two triple crown winners. I personally think Jazil would have given Barbaro a very good run for his money, given that he skipped the Preakness and was a late closer crying out for longer races. Barbaro was a beautiful athletic talented horse whose narrative was magnified by winning the KD in a very impressive fashion and then suffering a tragic injury on national TV. This,to a certain extent, exaggerated his status and I reckon its only 60/40 Barbaro beats Jazil in a hypothetical Belmont.

  • @AmericanAbsolute

    Not enough credit was given to Edgar Prado for being able to manage Barbaro despite the end result. Just the way he pulled Barbaro up and stayed mounted the entire time and dismounted to lift the weight off of the leg was beyond great stewardship. The doctors and everyone did a fantastic rehabilitating him. Laminitis in the left leg and abscess in the right proved to be too much for Barbaro to endure and that is what finally took him down and not the injury itself.
    That's speaks volumes for the surgical team.

      really? I feel like everyone who knows anything about the sport knows that Edgar was basically the only reason he had a chance at living. How his little pulled up that horse so perfectly is still unreal.

      Edgar later stated that he thought the New York fans (he was based at the NYRA tracks at the time) who wagered on Barbaro would be rough on him -- believing that he had something to do with the injury......but they treated him with the utmost respect. Yep, even some of the most jaded railbirds in the USA understood.

    There are three parts to this story I'll never forget:
    I was sitting there with my whole family when the race started. I was so devastated, just saying over and over: "Please don't let his leg be broken." When I saw the accident, when I read his injury list and told my dad, we cried together.
    I actually had hoped a few days before the decision was made that he would make it. The vet taking care of him said there was very little to no chance he'd not survive, and that next year he'd be a stud. I was getting ready for class three days later when my mom called and told me. It was a punch to the gut, I just on saying: "But they said he was better." I didn't want to believe it, my mom didn't want to.
    A book I read recently said the stands were absolute chaos during the accident. They even put a screen up. (privacy in the case in worst case scenario a horse has to be euthanized on the track.) People were screaming, one woman screamed she would buy the horse for a dollar so he wouldn't be euthanized. There was just complete chaos and panic.

      This happens all way too often. It’s been going on for YEARS. The public makes such an outcry when it’s a big name racehorse that gets injured. This industry makes it look like they care when they say “it’s nauseating to see this” when this happens every week, everywhere, every year to all horses. Big name horse, big trainer, no-name horse, little name trainer! It’s all for money. If it was that “nauseating” to the commentators and the apologetic supporters of this industry, it would be long dead like the circus.

    Barbaro broke through the gate and had a hair line injury once they put him back into the gate. A horse can not tell you this as in a minute or less. It requires a lot of force to push trough a starting gate door like he did and injure his hind legs while doing so. It is extremely rare to see a horse being pulled up right after leaving the starting gate. It was the track veterinarian fault for not delaying the race to check on Barbaros condition. If I am wrong ? Please let me know if I don’t know what I’m talking about? Thank You.

    • @Tatiana-yp2bk
      @Tatiana-yp2bk Рік тому

      Makes lot of sense. His trainer mentioned that it was a bad sign him breaking through the gate. I guess with all the adrenaline rush people didn’t think through. To check him out would delay the race and horses would not as explosive. They should’ve scratch him right there. And he would live. But they missed their chance.

      They were also freaking out because of the green screen.
      When a horse is beyond healing and it’s most humane to euthanize them on the track. They put a large truck between the horse and the grandstand. Mostly to give the horse and vet privacy. That’s why the official yelled at the cameraman. They don’t want a media circus or panic in the stands when they are making the decision or giving a horse his last moment on earth.
      A lot of people seeing the screen knew what that meant and panicked. People were screaming no, and one woman screamed to not put him down, she’d buy him for a dollar.

    As someone who's spent most of my life around horse tracks I've never seen a horse who broke prematurely from the gate the way Barbaro did not get scratched-for Barbaro's connections to race him anyway was cruel and borders on animal abuse.
    Ok I know it was the Preakness stakes but the horse's health must come 1st trainer Micheal Matz knows better but let Bob & Beverly Lewis (Barbaro's) owners make the call of racing him after a premature start this is was a big no no.
    Had he been scratched like he should've been at least he still be alive into stud service.

    what they do to horses for these races is often inhumane. There's a good book about the horse racing industry called "Grand Theft Horse" that introduced the subject to me.

      @@emilybailey4457 i doubt money is all they care about, they spent thousands on vet bills for months trying to heal barbaros leg, most owners would shot them then and there.

      Pretty fuckin rude to assume the owners trainers and jockeys dont care about the horse in an emotional way that goes beyond money. Total bullshit. You've obviously never spent much time around people in the racing industry if thats how you think it is.

    The thing is, with enough money, horses like this can recover and retire, but people don't want to put money towards a retired horse. I have no doubt that his owners,trainers, and riders loved him but this is why horses shouldn't be ran young and people need to be encouraged to have backup plans. Younger horses have harder times to recover cause they most likely won't stay still enough to let anything heal.
