If not for the injury in the Preakness, the 2006 Kentucky Derby was a glimpse of a Triple Crown Champion.

The greatest horse I've seen in my lifetime. He wasn't even tired after the race. Would have easily won the triple crown without the injury. One of the greatest racehorses of all time.

I missed one Derby live from 1981 to 2010. Barbaro was the best Derby winner I saw in that time frame. I have no doubt he would have been the missing Triple Crown winner ...

He was our greatest hope for a Triple Crown winner we have had in many years. I know he would have taken it had he not broken down. I know he would have. No one could touch him. No doubts, he would have taken it. I still am in awe watching his races. I have a tribute corner at my house for him. A whole collection of Barbaro items and mementos. I miss him, still get tears. He was some horse.

Samuel Pérez García The Only reason Barbaro wasn't the runaway favorite for the Derby was that he wasn't tested. But after the Derby, where he completely destroyed some very capable horses, it felt like he was destined to be the next Secretariat.

    • @samuelperezgarcia
      @samuelperezgarcia 9 років тому

MegaLlamalord I have seen a few horses in the exact same situation. Not one went on to become the next Secretariat. Or even the next Affirmed. There's simply nothing certain about Barbaro winning the TC.

My favorite horse forever.. 2018 and I will always watch this ❤😢 Barbaro ran the fastest last quarter mile since Secretariat! He was our triple crown winner. He blew this field away effortlessly. He could of won by 10 easily, it was just a matter of turning him loose.

And here comes Barbaro! The undefeated Barbaro! He comes up on the outside and takes the lead as the field turns for home in the Kentucky Derby, Barbaro turns it on!
Barbaro fell to his knees coming out of the starting gate but still had that race.

"and HERE comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro comes up on the outside and he takes the lead... as camera pulls back and pans ... beautiful... "as the field turns for HOME in the KD Barbaro TURNS IT ON !! .. and it is ALL Barbaro in a SUBLIIIME performance" he runs away from them ALL !" My God. it's perfect.

Watching this is so exhilarating, yet so heartbreaking at the same time... Highly doubt he ever fired all cylinders in any of his races, he almost certainly would have been a Triple Crown winner had things not gone the way they did... still to this day such a special and talented horse.

Barbaro, in the words of the great Tom Durkin "sublime". I was at the Preakness that year to see him. We all know what happened that day, one which I will never forget. I don't know if I tell myself this to make myself feel better about the whole situation but I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. In retrospect, it was no foregone conclusion that had he not gotten injured Barbaro would have won the Preakness, Bernardini ran one hell of a race and was one hell of a good racehorse. Being realistic who knows what would have happened. Instead Barbaro was injured. His undefeated record, his "sublime performance" in the Kentucky Derby and our imagination thinking up the what ifs have only added to his legend. Barbaro's inspirational and courageous story following his injury may have done just as much if not more for his fans and the sport then a Triple Crown would have, I like to think it has certainly done more for his fellow equine athletes. Following Barbaro's injury( and also the unfortunate and sudden death of Eight Belles years later), the horse racing industry finally began to take a hard look at horse safety.Tracks began to re-examine their track surfaces, many changing of to artificial racing surfaces. An enormous amount of awareness has been created and research done on new medicines and medical practices especially in regard to laminitis. Barbaro's legacy will always be one of greatness to me both on and off the track he will be remembered for having the heart of a champion.

Barbaro beat Bluegrass Cat by 6.5-7 lengths in the 'Derby, Bernardino beat Bluegrass Cat by 6 in the Travers. 3 differences. 1)Bernardini walked on the front end in the Travers 1:12.3, 1:36.3. 2) Barbaro was eased up the last 1/16 of a mile or so when he beat Bluegrass Cat, could have won by 10 or 12, and 3) Bluegrass Cat broke his leg in the Travers.

Man...why did Barbaro die? I bet everything that he was going to be the TC winner in 2006. At the Derby, he was STILL pulling away when he crossed the finish line and the field he was up against wasn't a weak field either. He went in 6-0 I believe. He was the modern-day Secretariat.

the second paragraph of what you say here is so right on the mark. You watch as Durkin spots the move of Barbaro and the you hear the roar of the crowd build and Durkin unfolds the finish of this race perfectly.... "and Barbaro TURNS IT ON...... then "it's ALL Barbaroa!!" I also like Gary's recap of the race, Edgar has him forwardly placed..... and just before explosive move that Barbaro was actually pulling Edgar out of the saddle...." I still cry when I watch this.

I follow a lot of sports, and I have to say there is nothing more exciting than the final stretch of a Triple Crown horse race. It's just heartbreaking that every now and then tragedy strikes, as in the case of Barbaro in the Preakness and others we have seen. The field had some notable names (Lawyer Ron, Jazil, Bluegrass Cat, Flashy Bull etc.) Prado did not use the whip not once!!!! Barbaro turned it on when he knew he had to an he blew the 20-horse field away. Once Barbaro got to the outside, it was over! He was still pullin away after the finish line!!!!!! A true champion.

@decroo21, Bernardini turned out to be one of the best conventional dirt colt's in America that I've seen for many years, and has also become about the best and most sought after young sire in the business, too. That said, what Barbaro accomplished in his career spanning a very short amount of time is equally impressive. It would've been tough handicapping out a race with both Barbaro and Bernardini in the field. Like splitting hairs!!

there was a :48 sec video in beginning that showed first jump out of gate and 2 or 3 handlers taking Barbaro in hand. that video showed this: 2 or 3 men holding him, he stpped back on his right hind leg, and as he came forward againto his left front, the right hoof seemed to "flip" up and OUT of the deep sand, looking as if the hoof had turned under in the sand and he was standing on with weight on the short pastern, the long pastern is above it. I googled and saw drawing of the skeletal leg

Barbaro's story is the most tragic TB story ever. (what happened to Phar Lap is a close second...) He loved to run so much, and ended up reduced to hobbling on his wrecked legs. His desire to live was as brave as was his running style.
