Those mk1 s are the future... Ohh , no they have springs and comfortable seats... So, in essence, they are still something we aspire too

"One day all British railway coaches will be as luxurious as this".... phah! Try telling that to anybody forced to ride on a Pacer regularly!

Except prices, it's also because of the people who always have to destroy everything

Have a go riding a Sprinter all the way to Fort William, you can really tell after a while they're for short commuter "Sprints" rather than a 3-4 hour journey. Those MK2s and Class 68s Scotrail has are wasted on the peak time commuter runs

It's unfortunate BR didn't license produce EMD four stroke diesels like the 567C. They were much less expensive to produce, needed less maintenance to still run correctly, and produced much less pollution than the two stroke Deletics. An English version of the EMD E9 locomotive with one or two units could have handled any BR passenger train, at the same speed as the Class 55's, and at a cost of about half of a single unit Deltic with greater reliability. I realize that a non-British engine in 1957 Britain was out of the question, but swallowing one's national pride and picking the best engine, as Australian railways did, would have saved BR some of the operating funds it desperately needed as the years went along.
