Wish we could go back to that era.

I may be American, but I know for a fact that yes, Britain's railway system is kinda crap these days. For me, it's too many different companies and liveries, as well as not enough locomotive-hauled passenger trains; here in America, pretty much all passenger rail is still loco-hauled, mainly in push-pull configuration on commuter routes; we do have some multiple units, but they're few and far between, and many of them are European designs that don't meet our very, very strict crash safety standards because our freight trains are bigger, longer, and heavier than in Europe.

    • @MGstaR17
      @MGstaR17 5 років тому +2

@@Trainlover1995 Why is the British railway system so divided today? In the 80s there was only one company.

Times move on, people in the era in the video would probably still be mourning what they had 30 years earlier. For all its faults, today we have a rail system that carries twice as many passengers on more trains much more safely.

In 1988 I purchased a two week all train/any UK destination rover ticket for my vacation. While changing trains at crew I was struck by the variety and frequency of trains there so decided not to take my intended train but instead hang around and take in the action. This video took me straight back to that day. Thank you so much for these great memories.

Its the variety that always strikes me. How could you not be fascinated back then?! Look at 3:35!! brilliant! I was a spotter in 70s and 80s (around Dorking, Surrey) and I really wish id gone further afield a few times to Crewe or Swindon or out to somewhere like Woodhead even (although i was only 9 when that closed)! Something like hauling only 2 vans at 6:30 wouldn't prob happen now it would be seen as 'economically wasteful' or some crap. 7:50 aaaaah motor rail!! excellent.
This was filmed just around the point that music and girls took over from trains, for me!

There seem to be a lot of train videos filmed at Crewe on UA-cam but for me 20 minutes was long enough in Crewe on the way to / from the Battle of Nantwich last January. Crewe itself feels a bit run-down and I was happy when the Nantwich bus came. It's like having to walk through a seedy part of Sheffield to get to the Interchange to get a bus into Derbyshire...
(I used to be a railfan in 80s-90s but not so much now except on journeys).

Locomotives in this Country Nowadays are nothing Compared to What I saw on the Railways in the 1970s and Early 1990s when there were the Classic Clagging Sounds of the Class 20,25,26,33,40,47 and the Classic sound of the Napier Engine of the Class 55 aka the Celtic when we had Muscle Power Back then,I know there is a Generation that liked to remember the Good Old days of Steam When Mallard Broke the Record of 128mph in 1938 and got a lot of Respect for that But I was Bought up in the Diesel and Electrification Age but Compared to what is on the Railways now since well all I have to say is Nah Don't think Much of The Modern Rail Network Since Privatisation Back in the Early 1990s and Now with all the Foreign Made Stuff on the Railways like the Italian Made Pendelinos and Dutch Abelio,Would Much rather go back to the Time of When Such locomotives I remember were on the Railways.🚂🚍🚆🚅

That 86 in blue looks really nice hauling that blue/grey rake or mk2s. Kinda 60s retro. Interestingly, 2015 sees the reintroduction of class 87 use on passenger trains with the caledonian sleepers. So you can still see an 87 + mk2/3 set stopping at Crewe today, just like old times! :-)

Remember Crewe well, used to travel from London Euston To Aberystwyth as a kid around this time. Usually this service was Mk3's hauled by an 85 or 86, then change at Crew to get a 150 'sprinter' the rest of the way. But one time the train was made up of an 86 and load of NSE Mk1s, then at Crewe the 86 was swapped out for a 37 and it took us all the way. but they didn't plan this too well as the 10 coach London train didn't fit on platform Aberystwyth. lol.

Why is E3195 wearing the old running number scheme and livery?
So basically, you have the class 90s with the new intercity livery, then you have most locomotives with BR blue, then you have this oddity with the old electric blue livery and logo.
It must have been a rare catch by then.
Is there a story of what happened to 31466?

I quite liked the Class 155's - there's been talk of more coming back by doubling up Class 153's, which seems crazy! lol

They double them up(and even treble them) on Great Western, seen such consists working out of Bristol. Also saw a GW 153 coupled to a South West Trains 158 this week - interesting pairing.

Only ever found on the London Midland Region apparently. Responsible for station upkeeping.

Nice video, when trains were TRAINS!
That Glasgow Bleu train strayed a good disctance from home.
And I imediatly noticed the number on the dented class 31, 31466, that one has been for a year in our fleet at the ELR, that damage was not the final condemnation for that loco.
Loved the thrash of the 37's and the starting grid with the MGR. (and the sound of the 85's)

Its not nostalgia is it to say that trains had a bit more character back then?

No, it's not. There was definitely more variety on Britain's rail system in those days. Nowadays, most passenger trains are boring old multiple units built by foreign manufacturers, and the interesting multiple units like the Pacers, Sprinters, Turbos, and Networkers are being withdrawn because of bullshit safety standards, and bean counters who would rather buy foreign than rebuild older rolling stock to modern standards (at least the InterCity 125 isn't going anywhere for a long time).
I may be an American who's stuck with Amtrak and publicly-owned commuter rail agencies, but even I know that Britain's rail system was second-to-none in those days. BR should never have been Privatised, and I would kill to see it Renationalised under the BR banner with good old loco-hauled passenger trains and Rail Blue paint. And if they're feeling real good, bring back steam, too. Better for the environment, and can benefit from modern technology.
