  • I am finally responding to a TON of requests, asking me to show what my camera settings are for video. So I grabbed a 5D Mark III and R.I.P. through them all. I used the 5D Mark III as I think that would cover just about any camera setting out there. And...Harlem Shake? Let it die! Please! :)

    Some basic ones. Color correction is such an opinionated area, like coffee or tea. Basically, you use the tools in whatever program you're using (levels, curves, fast color corrector, etc.) to get each shot(s) looking the way you want it. Then you color GRADE the whole thing to get the overall look you want for the whole film. Does that help?

    Greetings, When you're in a fixed studio set up, isn't that overkill using such an expensive camera? I'm toying with using my Logitech camera for a very tight shoot on my upcoming UA-cam channel. I've focused on extremely good lighting and software to edit for best results. I know the purest (which I WAS) tells me to go the best, but I honestly don't think it's going to make any difference. It's really not about the money but I'd rather spend it on content. Please tell me where I'm wrong. -Keith

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Keith! May seem overkill, but that's not the only way I use(d) that camera. I invested heavy into it and I am still using that camera 7 years later, so I'm cool with it. True. It's about the content. Always use what you've got, try it, adjust it, squeeze it for everything it's got. Then you'll know if you need something better, and if so, you'll know exactly what.

    • @keithnorris8982

      @@BasicFilmmaker Duh, there I go again, saying something stupid. I guess what I really want to know is what would be an acceptable digital camera and lens for doing my kind of work. My other camera doesn't have a port for external Mic. You told me about the clapping technique to sinc voice with picture, on another video but I think if the Logitech doesn't do the job (which by the tone of your voice you don't believe it will:-) I want to go ahead and replace it (Sony 5000 oc.) Seriously, I enjoy your UA-cam channel (I'm a big fan) and I think you're funny as H#ll. -Keith

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 роки тому +1

      Hey there. Nothing wrong with the Logitech to start. For syncing, invest in an audio recorder, then you'll get great audio. For cameras, you're still going to get Meh audio without a dedicated audio recorder. As far as what camera to get, I get asked that a bazillion times, but it's all about budget, research, and getting something that meets YOUR needs. Everyone shoots differently and under different conditions - available space, light, budget, experience, etc.

    • @keithnorris8982
      @keithnorris8982 4 роки тому +1

      @@BasicFilmmaker Hi Kevin, After spending about three hours on UA-cam today, I "think" the Canon EOS M50 will do everything I need in a fixed setting. But yes, I understand if you're taking a camera about and doing the things you do, a better camera would be worth the difference in cost. Damned, it has become overwhelming trying to make decisions on things you're new to. -Keith

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 роки тому +1

      @@keithnorris8982 Not a bad choice. Cameras are the WORST! Audio, microphones, lighting, all that, I can recommend away, but cameras are a royal PITA - they come and go, and every person has different needs. p.s. No matter what camera you get, the LENS is the important thing. I can slap a $1000 lens on a $250 camera, and get way better footage than slapping a $250 lens on a $1000 camera. So take into account there is an investment in lenses when buying. My friend over at the @WorthItOrNot UA-cam channel has an M50 I believe, and you can always head over there and ask him any questions you may have.

    One other thing off-subject. I captured a still photo from a frame and it was on 30 fps IPB. I got a line through the top of the photo, Had I chosen ALL-I on the 5D Mk III I would have had all data in every frame and no line. As it was, I was capturing full frame data only once every half second and the camera was guessing about frames, using one to predict the next, in between half-seconds. So ALL-I either 30 or 24. This video suggests 24, my company uses 30, I assume it makes no difference as long as it is XX All-I.

    Great clip. Love your personality.
    There are tens of thousands of tyros out there (like me) who cannot get an honest, reliable answer to the following: how to get your video to look 'good' when downrez'd by UA-cam to 360p. Some UA-cam videos look just fine when played at 360p. Not just videos captured by cameras like Red Dragon and Alex units. T4i footage at 360p, posted by some UA-camr users, looks better than my 5D Mark iii footage, even when shot through expensive glass. And even when following UA-cam's compression guidelines line by line.
    What are the best tips you have for getting footage to look good at 360p, when using the 5D3, using the compression and codecs UA-cam recommends and using good glass?
    Thanks!

    Thanks. On the T3i, you should have many of these settings. Just remember, if you set the picture profile to what I have it set to, you'll have to add sharpening and do color correction. When you first grab the footage shot, it will look dull, but, you'll be able to control how sharp, colorful, saturated, and light and dark it is better.

    Interesting question. Hmmm. I'd have to say the 5D Mark III. Not the best, but I can operate by myself, no crew needed, and it shoots pretty awesome footage. Not sure if I would use this on a film. Used a lot of different stuff. I wouldn't say I have a dream camera. Although I think I would like to shoot some stuff at 1000+ frames per second.

    sir. do u have magic lantern on your camera ? please am getting the 5d mark 3 hoping to get same quality like this video

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  10 років тому +1

      I do not use ML. I use the 5D Mark III as described with the settings shown, a 50mm f/1.4 set at an aperture of about 4, and make sure I have enough light. You should be fine without magic lantern. My next video is my render settings for UA-cam/Vimeo. You might also check into the newer 4k cameras like the GH4, as that is where things are headed. You can check Dave Dugdale's channel as he is now using the GH4 and does a gigantic review on it. Frankly, I could shoot these talking head videos with an iPhone or just about anything. And don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Mark III. :)

    hi can you tell me the exact RAW OR JPEG setting subunits for better and HD images .. there are lot of sub unit settings for image format settings could you clearly say which one would be the best ???

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  8 років тому +1

      +Sandeep Yadagiri Hello Sandeep. The settings I show are all about video (film). When you start talking about shooting RAW (photos - can't shoot RAW video with this camera) I am in the dark. I would definitely ask a photographer about this, as I would only be guessing and I don't want to mislead you.

  • @BasicFilmmaker
    @BasicFilmmaker  11 років тому

    They're still good. Any of the settings you see on this video apply to that camera too. Any you don't obviously don't. Just remember that when you film this way, the footage looks DULL. BUT, it has all the data to make color correction and tweaking better before it breaks down. If you Are NOT going to do any correction, make sure you select a profile that doesn't look bad. :)

    Great question! I have a monitor connected to the HDMI port which I can see from where I stand. I make sure I'm framed up (I have marks on the floor). Then I set the magnification to 10X, walk to my mark, get my eyeball in the shot, and use my little remote to take a picture (which auto focuses). Then I go back to the camera, turn off auto focus so I don't bump it, and hit record on my audio device and camera. Sounds hard, but it takes about 15 seconds. :)

    Liked and subscribed. Awesome. Just started using what is an awesome camera [and the second love of my life] to make movies. Really want to get into this stuff, but after the amount of cash I've already spent over the years setting up as a photographer I actually think my soon to be wife will actually kill me when I tell her :-)
    Seriously though this looks like a fine resource, and so much fun that it's almost impossible to resist.
    Have a first film I want to do [always important], and a plan on how to do it [even more important]. Short obviously [probably important].
    Lastly big part of my plan as always keep corporate separate from artistic! Do it with photography, gona do it with filmmaking.
    Happy trails you mad mad people ;-)

      Hey Barry! Glad you liked it. It sounds like you already have a good head about you on this stuff. You'll do well, and since you have a photog background, you already have 60% of the knowledge (more or less) to do this. Good luck, and let me know how it goes. :)

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  10 років тому

      Sure. It would depend on your camera and settings, but on the Mark you spin the wheel on the back of the camera and the aperture will change. In movie mode (and M mode), make sure to hit the INFO button a bunch of times so you can cycle through the various things you want to display on the screen.

    Basically, your saying theres no difference between image quality jpeg or raw (not using magic lantern) is that right? Shooting video only im not sure what to choose. You said "highest setting on left" does that mean the minus icon? or L or RAW? Sorry im lost, but love the dont care!

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  8 років тому

      No problem. You want the L. It's a bit of misnomer to even show raw for video - this camera (almost ALL cameras) do not shoot RAW video, but of course, they do shoot raw photos. So just make sure the image quality is set to "L" with the smooth arc next to it, the furthest setting to the left. The '-' setting means OFF, in other words, IF YOU ARE SHOOTING PHOTOS, you can shoot BOTH jpeg high quality photos AND raw photos at the same time, of just jpeg or just raw. But for video, no raw. Make sense? If not, let me know. Thanks!

    How to remove focus grid while shooting with camera and displaying on laptop?

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 роки тому +1

      You have to turn all the on screen settings off. I believe if you hit the info button and keep hitting it, it’s right next to the menu button, you’ll eventually end up with nothing on the screen. If you still get on screen displays and can’t get rid of them you might have to use the Canon software that allows you to manage that.

    Question: Can you have these settings saved as a Preset? Can I name that preset? I love my camera... just hate spending a half hour going through everything to get it setup every single time. I want to be able to shoot some video, then switch to photography on an easy couple buttons. Thanks internet.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  10 років тому +1

      walperstyle Depends on the camera. Most cameras have a "saved settings" area in the menus, or a "Save these settings to ___" a button or switch on the camera. On the 5D Mark III you have C1, C2 and C3 on the knob, and you can save settings to that and switch to them easily.

    • @walperstyle
      @walperstyle 10 років тому

      Just figured it out today! For others, if they are searching, go into your M (manual mode). Go through all the menus on setting it up for Video work. (see youtube video on how to do this, its quite detailed)
      After you have all the settings ready to shoot video, go to the 'wrench setting' in the menu, and scroll over to the 4th menu to 'Custom shooting mode (C1-C3), click on it, then 'register settings'.
      There you go, now your Cwhatever, is set to those film settings.
      C3 is my film, C1 is my still shooting with flash.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  10 років тому

      Nice. Thanks for the explanation!

    • @walperstyle
      @walperstyle 10 років тому +1

      OOPS DOUBLE POST
      OK, so I figured it out.
      1) go through this youtube video on your manual setting on the knob. Make sure everything is ready for filming.
      2) Go to the wrench menu in the menu folder, the 4th menu option should have 'custom shooting mode (c1-C3). Click into that
      3) Click 'Register settings'
      4)assign to whatever 'C' knob you want. Mine is C3.
      DONE!
      C3 is my filming setting. C1 is my single shooting with flash.

    Why can't I find 60 fps on my canon 5D3? Please help!!!!

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  8 років тому

      +jax p Hey Jax. You have to change to 1280 x 720 to get 60 framers per second. It will not shoot 60fps at full 1920 x 1080. If you MUST shoot at full 1920 x 1080 then you're going to have to use Magic Lantern, something I have not ever used and won't. If I am shooting with the Mark III at 60fps, I will make sure my focus and lighting is nailed so there;s no noise, and scale up if I need full HD.

    Hello.. can you assist me with the aspect ration settings on canon 5dkm3? I would like to set my camera as 16:9 and 2.35:1.. would really be nice if you could advice me on how it works.. thx.. i wish this is possible without magic lantern.. any other plugin would be nice since i dont want to downgrade my canon to the version for ML

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  7 років тому

      The aspect ratio is 16:9. To get 235:1, you would shoot at 16:9, and tape or mark the monitor or screen with something that shows you have the right framing. A better option is a good monitor like the ones Aputure offers that allow you to set the montor to that ratio (basically black bars). You would then add black bars in post.
