Thank you for this compilation! As a teenager I was a huge Munson fan, wearing his number as a Little Leaguer too. I cried my eyes out the day of his passing.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Munson play numerous times with my late father at the Stadium. He had his routine at home plate with his batting glove B4 going to the plate. He was clutch n the heart of the Yankees! He belongs in the HOF!!

HOF, period. Been a Yankee fan since 1970. All the great, great Yankees since then - Nettles, Guidry, Reggie, Randolph, Mattingly, Jeter, Williams, Rivera - if I had to pick the greatest Yankee in my lifetime, it would be Thurman.
The homer off Doug Bird was about as perfect a demonstration you’ll ever see of a person willing himself to do something he should’ve been incapable of doing. Thurman, in those playoffs, often looked like he couldn’t push off his legs to hit. Now it’s possible to to hit with alarms and no legs, but to hit like that with power, especially pulling the ball, is remarkably difficult. Thurman only hit six homers that season, down from 12 in 1977. And his doubles were down too. And yet in a moment where an extra-base hit seemed like the least likely of scenarios, he he hit a four-bagger. Simply remarkable.
As a kid, I was a baseball catcher and my hero was Thurman Munson. On the day his death was announced, I was fishing at a local watering hole. Had my transistor radio tuned to some local baseball channel when I heard the news. Almost 50 years later, I still remember the sadness I felt at hearing my baseball idol had died.
I was with my family on vacation, at Nagagamisis Lake Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. Couldn't get anything on the radio during the day. About 11PM I asked Pop for the keys to the motor home, so I could get the ball scores from WJR out of Detroit. They announced the scores and the Yankees did not play so I was about to turn it off when the announcer gave the news about Thurman. I was in shock. I took the keys back to Pop and told him what happened. I then went to the campfire and sat down. When Pop came and asked me if I was okay, I jumped up into his arms and stared bawling. I was 14 years old and never the same.

HOF snub a joke. HR count not great but ROY, 3 WS, 2 WS wins, MVP, .300 plus BA in playoffs, .295 BA career, solid defensive catcher, pitchers loved him and as good a clutch hitter as anyone who has ever played and all done in 10 years. Seizmore or Fisk have any of that???
@@frankjuarez1367 I'm not sure how you meant the comment to flow. It starts as if your saying Munson as a Hof Snub is a Joke. As if your saying he's not good enough. I follow the comment thru as an impressive amount of info on Thurman Munson is presented. Then it ends with Sizemore? Think that's a Typo I don't know of any catchers named Sizemore. But you mention Carleton Fisk who is a HOFR and deservedly so. It ends as if your saying Fisk was lesser than Munson with the details you provided about Munson? I'm sure there might be an error somewhere in the comment that gives a false impression of your original intentions. I realize that Munson's Over all total statistics fall a little short typically of what they look for in a Hof selection. His career was of course tragically cut short by I'd say 4-5 yrs . I make my case on the number of people that argue for him, Ranker has him as #15 on there list of Best Players not in the Hall of Fame. That would eliminate the idea that it's a "Joke" that he's a Hof Snub. It may be Debatable but it's not a solid case he shouldn't be in. My other point is the Reality that he was one of the best catchers in the game being overshadowed maybe by Bench and Maybe Fisk. But Munson was a great hitter for a catcher, Great Defensively , And to top it all off I use his Post Season heroics on a Big Team like the Yankees and he is embedded in sports fans minds from the 70's like Mr October Reggie to a lesser extent. His life & career was tragically ended and I can't think of a better way to finally honor him than by putting him in. I'm almost positive there's lesser players in the Hall of Fame. Add it all up I think it's a close enough call and you add his Post Season heroics. That's to me the kicker. And it's just for fun as far as I'm concerned. I liken it to say Lynn Swann in the NFL , his numbers wasn't that great, his career was short. But Lynn Swann was a walking Highlight film and His Playoff Super Bowl heroics was legendary. There's a place for players like that. I think Munson should get in based on my theory which seems to have a lot of support when you research what people are saying about Munson and why he should be in. I don't see people arguing he shouldn't. Yeah the stats aren't huge but you can't deny he was the at least #2 catcher his whole career which was long enough. Johnny Bench is better I'll agree. But it's no joke to say he's a Hof Snub, It's what I call a Bubble Case. Appreciate the response. I do like discussing this stuff it's fun to me. Munson was my father's favorite player and I grew up idolizing Don Mattingly like so many fathers and sons in nyc did at the time. It's hard now for people to understand just how popular those guys were in NYC at the time. Along with Reggie ofcoarse. Fans like my father still cried decades after at any Yankee Stadium tribute to Thurman. Thurman's wife used to be a guest of honor at the games once in a while. Great women.
Bobby Murcer was my favorite, Thurman was 2nd. Still remember the home run against the Royals in the 78 playoffs, I was 12 and screaming my head off when hit that blast.
Munson was absolute money in the playoffs. Mr. Clutch. The tension between Jackson and Munson the whole 78 season and then they put their animosity aside and went out there and won a World Series together.
Much love to Thurman Munson from Los Angeles, a place he tortured! The 1978 playoff run beginning with the Bucky Dent game, then the Royals and my Dodgers was really a magical one for those Yankees.
Certainly among the Top 3 catchers in the 70's along with Bench and Fisk. Munson died 45 Years ago today as of this typing (8-02-24). Still remember exactly where I was when hearing on the car radio. The way he played, he never went on the disabled list in his career. Sheer guts.
