Well, I wouldn't go that far. Him saying Slumdog Millionaire has more of a personality to it than Spotlight makes him someone who's not thinking clearly but also is mentally insane.
Love Oppenheimer but its definitely not as good as Return of The King or Gladiator. Breaking my heart yall. LOTR movies, especially ROTK are the greatest movies of the century thus far. Great show
My favourite thing about videos like this is the absolute fear to say that films like Nomadland and Moonlight were overrated. It's absolutely fine to have that opinion, and hold conviction in it. The right movies largely advanced.
I like the bracket format but you should seed the based on their IMDb rating or some other rating. This will help avoid early close matchups and better movies will have easier routes to the later rounds.
1. Return of the King 2. No Country for Old Men 3. Moonlight 4. Oppenheimer 5. Parasite 6. The Hurt Locker 7. Spotlight 8. The Departed 9. Million Dollar Baby 10. Gladiator 11. Chicago 12. Argo 13. Birdman 14. 12 Years a Slave 15. The King's Speech 16. A Beautiful Mind 17. Slumdog Millionaire 18. The Artist 19. The Shape of Water 20. Crash 21. Everything Everywhere All At Once 22. Green Book 23. Nomadland 24. CODA 25. Emilia Perez (if it wins)
No Denis for best director😥 Super disappointing. Dune 2 feels so snubbed as a whole. What if it dropped 2 months ago? Conversation might be totally different. Very disappointing.
Great episode again guys! As far as Oscar noms go, Denis not getting a Director nod is a crime and I gotta be honest, Sebastian Stan should be nominated for A Different Man over The Apprentice. The Academy feels like it’s making a political statement when it comes to nominating both him and Jeremy Strong, which in turn takes a spot away from a deserving candidate. Just my take, but I love you guys 🫶
My top 10 of the BP winners would probably be: 1. ROTK 2. No Country 3..Oppenheimer 4. Gladiator 5. Beautiful Mind 6. The Departed 7. Parasite 8. Argo 9. The Hurt Locker 10. Slumdog Millionaire
like Jake, I definitely dislike it more because it won over The Social Network. It feels so slight and cute compared to it, I remember not being a fan and not really wanting to go back and watch it either. of Hooper's movies I think the only one I liked was The Damned United, which I've seen a few times and really enjoy.
I find it interesting that Colin Farrell got a lot of praise for his transformation (deservedly so) however Bill Skarsgard arguably did just as much if not more for Orlok e,g. The opera coach he used to get a lower voice. Just interesting to think about , why was one so transformative and deserved of awards and one was not. Is it because we expect different things from different actors? Maybe
Wow, never disagreed so much with a video like this. Neither of the two finalists would even make it out of the first round for me, I didn't like EEEAAO and Oppenheimer was fine but nothing that left much of an impression on me.
I agree. I don't get this love for Oppenheimer as being one of the best all time but each to their own. It was a good movie but nothing special for me. Frankly I got just as much out of an Oppenheimer documentary I watched at the same time the movie came out and it was 1 hour shorter thank god! The movie was too long for me. That hearing went on forever, thought it was never going to end. The hosts of the show though love anything Nolan does so I was not surprised it did so well in their bracket.
I know it's tough to find time for everyone to be there but it's a shame when someone isn't there when you do these things because you'll never do that specific ranking again so we miss out on someone's input - in this case it was Kevin
The shape of water isn’t even CLOSE to the departed! What in the world. I like the shape of water, but it takes itself way too serious for it to be as silly as it is. This is absolute goofball territory.
Can't believe y'all complained about recency bias at the beginning of the bracket and then THAT movie won when Gladiator, Moonlight, and Parasite were right there to pick LMAO what a joke
Some spicy bracket picks.. and opinions here. But certainly not everyone is going to agree. I didn't agree with all the takes.. but still super fun to watch! I was thinking as you were doing the bracket that this would work better as a Tier list system. Help really good films from getting cut off early in the process. I'd love to see a Best Movie tier list... or system with points based on how high they were voted, etc. Super fun!
Worst best picture winners last 25 years: Crash, The Artist, Spotlight, Moonlight, Shape of Water, Green Book, Nomadland & *worst of all The King’s Speech*
for this year's oscars: snubs- Challengers getting nothing (mostly score but maybe cinematography, acting, editing, directing), Villeneuve for directing and adapted screenplay maybe? for Dune Part 2. Furiosa getting nothing was a bit odd too IMO considering how many technical ones Fury Road got and won. Nice to see The Substance pick up some nominations, Ariana Grande for Wicked, Edward Norton for A Complete Unknown (I like it when people playing quieter characters get a nom).
My Ranking of the 21st Century Best Picture Winners: 1. 12 Years a Slave 2. Parasite 3. Spotlight 4. Moonlight 5. Green Book 6. Million Dollar Baby 7. CODA 8. Nomadland 9. Birdman 10. A Beautiful Mind 11. LOTR: Return of the King 12. Gladiator 13. The Shape of Water 14. The King’s Speech 15. The Hurt Locker 16. Oppenheimer 17. Everything Everywhere All at Once 18. Chicago 19. Slumdog Millionaire 20. The Departed 21. Crash 22. The Artist 23. No Country for Old Men
Man this was a fun show but damn I've never disagreed with you guys more with a lot of these choices. It's wild some of these films actually won Best Picture.
For me No Country for Old Men was the best best picture so far, but for sheer fun it’s Everything Everywhere and for the movie that shocked me by how good it was it’s Parasite
These three are totally crazy Million Dollar Baby does hold up because it's not sacharine or maudlin, it's sophisticated and it's just as great as Unforgiven.
Jake saying that Slumdog Millionaire has more of a personality to it than Spotlight makes him not only someone who's not thinking clearly but also mentally ill. 😒
2 picks in and Jake is the only one thinking clearly. The Departed and Gladiator are both 10/10 movies.
Well, I wouldn't go that far. Him saying Slumdog Millionaire has more of a personality to it than Spotlight makes him someone who's not thinking clearly but also is mentally insane.
Kind of amazed of the lack of love for The Departed from the hosts. It’s probably my favorite of Scorsese’s.
I was surprised too.. but Scorsese’s best? Surely you jest
@ I didn’t say best. I haven’t seen all of his films. I said it’s my personal favorite of what I’ve seen. Not every film of his lands for me.
Reelblend Friday baby!!! Can’t wait to watch this episode 🔥🔥🔥
Love Oppenheimer but its definitely not as good as Return of The King or Gladiator. Breaking my heart yall. LOTR movies, especially ROTK are the greatest movies of the century thus far.
Great show
LOTR is for dorks, come on.
My biggest disappointment about the oscars nominations was that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross challengers score didn't get nominated!!
Found this to be crazy. It should've won imo
My favourite thing about videos like this is the absolute fear to say that films like Nomadland and Moonlight were overrated. It's absolutely fine to have that opinion, and hold conviction in it. The right movies largely advanced.
Promising Young Woman should have won that year. And Carey too.
These guys suck, I’m not even a departed fan like that but choosing shape of water over it is insane
I like the bracket format but you should seed the based on their IMDb rating or some other rating. This will help avoid early close matchups and better movies will have easier routes to the later rounds.
1. Return of the King

24. CODA
25. Emilia Perez (if it wins)
So incredibly glad I stayed until the very end😂
Things often get goofy
Hello.. Hello. Are you there?? :)
I'm sitting here drying my tears because ya'll made me cry laughing with the outro. I can't. 😂😂😂
Not particularly surprising the guy with a Spider-Man poster isn’t a “David Lynch guy” lol
Love these games!!!
Jake is right - Shape of Water is terrible. The Departed is far better - even if it is one if Scorseses weaker films.
Having The Departed lose like that is CRAZY
Nosferatu was my film of 2024. Thanks for talking about it guys!
No country for old men is WAY better than return of the king
I should switch off when you went Oppenheimer over gladiator but I stayed then he chooses the shape of water of the departed.
Please please keep things like the ending in that was so great
That humor is a staple of this stupid show. It’s not going anywhere!
I honestly am turning off after the second match up.
The guy picking the shape of water is one of those.
Let’s try and be different.
No Denis for best director😥 Super disappointing. Dune 2 feels so snubbed as a whole. What if it dropped 2 months ago? Conversation might be totally different. Very disappointing.
It very much is like voters forgot it came out.
The best are (no order):
Oppenheimer
ROTK
Hurt Locker
NCFOM
Departed
Parasite
Great episode again guys! As far as Oscar noms go, Denis not getting a Director nod is a crime and I gotta be honest, Sebastian Stan should be nominated for A Different Man over The Apprentice. The conversation between Return of the King and Nomadland went on too long
The Social Network undoubtedly would’ve been at the top if not for a damn speech from a King! 😢
I probably agree.
like Jake, I definitely dislike it more because it won over The Social Network. @@sweetlows1 And CATS, of course
@ The Damned United is probably the best movie about football(soccer) I’ve seen. I also quite liked his version of Les Miserable.
Bro this not the time to say you are not a “David lynch fan”. Just pay ya respects to the legend smh
Fair

Maybe
Shape of Water over Departed hahaha never talk movies again
Shape of water over Departed??? Lmfao what
8:07 lmao Jake was spot on here
I cannot comprehend that anyone would think Everything Everywhere all at Once is in debate for this! Its good but cmon
Wow, never disagreed so much with a video like this. Neither of the two finalists would even make it out of the first round for me, I didn't like EEEAAO and Oppenheimer was fine but nothing that left much of an impression on me.

23. No Country for Old Men
This was one of the most frustrating episodes I've watched. So many good and bad choices all at once 😅
Departed, gladiator both should have won and no country for old men should have won it all.
Unfortunately could not take this seriously after Lotr over No country
Man this was a fun show but damn I've never disagreed with you guys more with a lot of these choices. It's wild some of these films actually won Best Picture.
That last bit sounded like the infamous Blake Lively interview
No way crash vs green book is random 🤣🤣
I think I am only going to listen to Jake going forward in regards to movies to watch.
This list is invalid just after the first match up.
Gladiator>Oppenheimer for sheer rewatch ability. Plus Gladiator2 shows how hard that magic is to capture.
I saw 'Presence" last night. I was calling it Nickel Boys ghost movie. it was only ok...
For me No Country for Old Men was the best best picture so far, but for sheer fun it’s Everything Everywhere and for the movie that shocked me by how good it was it’s Parasite
The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King are more best than Nomadland in here brackets
Are we going to have fun or can you just tell me now that Parasite will be #1?
These three are totally crazy Million Dollar Baby does hold up because it's not sacharine or maudlin, it's sophisticated and it's just as great as Unforgiven.
Gladiator > Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer is much better
I see both sides here. I truly do. But, ultimately, I’d have to go with Oppenheimer myself!
Great set of movies to choose from!
Gladiator is good but it’s mostly I entertaining. The stoic parts are there but a bit of cheese here and there
The Substance getting best picture nom is the best thing to happen to horror.
Moonlight over Nomadland 🥹
Jake my guy always bringing the sanity
Oppenheimer 100% 👑
Slumdog over parasite💀💀 parasite is one of the best movies of all time
Oppenheimer sounds just about right!
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is the greatest movie this century
There Will Be Blood exists... So not even the best that year
The shape of water of the Departed???? Lmao
also kings speech is an amazing movie its so much better than social network its not top 4 Fincher
Dune:part two >> Oppenheimer
my top 5 Oscars Best Picture winners
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Parasite
Birdman
Oppenheimer
The Shape Of Water
Off the top of my head, No country for old men has to be the best one. Birdman and The Departed are close second and third.
Proof that Oscars best pictures are not necessarily the best... Even when best is subjective LOL.... And the Weinstein/Miramax years are so sus
sean has some horrible taste
respect you're guys opinion but you're so off million dollar baby is a masterpiece
I think it's very good!
Jake is right again The Shape is Water is not good!
Jake saying that Slumdog Millionaire has more of a personality to it than Spotlight makes him not only someone who's not thinking clearly but also mentally ill. 😒
EEAAO IS overrated.
There Will he blood
yall tripping on Moonlight
shape of water over departed is an absolutely insane take. get outta here
Chicargo
THE DEPARTED SLANDER WILL NOT BE TOLERATED
Should have been ROTK
Oppenheimer is severely overrated. imo. Atleast 3-4 better films in the bracket.
slumdog millionaire over parasite....yea i'm gunna see myself out
Crash over brokeback mountain.. ridiculous
Gladiator easily over Oppenheimer. Jake is right!
Parasite = #1
Bidman is one of the best films of the past decade
I should switch off when you went Oppenheimer over gladiator but I stayed then he chooses the shape of water of the departed.
