    Nolan is the reason I fell in love with the art of filmmaking. He bridged the gap between big budget blockbusters and pure cinema. He’s my favorite filmmaker of all time and he deserves all the recognition for pioneering so much we enjoy at the movies.

      I will never forget the moment in my midnight IMAX showing when the screen opened up on those sky scrapers and the entire audience gasping and grasping their seats as if they we're going to fall off. That was remarkable

      I'm sorry... saying "pioneering so much we enjoy at the movies" feels unfair to me. Nolan has a ton of idols such as Michael Mann for example. What about Steven Spielberg? He's the one who pioneered the blockbuster in 1975 and has kept his blockbuster films human all the decades of his career. I do understand you love Nolan's filmmaking but calling him a pioneer like that disregards too much of cinema history before him.

    Christopher Nolan is my favorite director of all time. He changed my life. Interstellar is my favorite film of all time. This next week is gonna be big for me rewatching his films getting ready for Oppenheimer and I’m just so happy that I was born in the era he’s making movies. What he has done for cinema is amazing. I hope he continues to keep making the greatest movies of all time and proving to people cinema is here to stay and will forever be here. Thank you Universal for allowing our beloved reelblend co-hosts interview this great man because there truly is no one else who can interview them other than these boys. Oppenheimer!

    We should show gratitude that we get to exist at the same time as Christopher Nolan does while he contributes to cinema it really is a privilege to admire this mans career in real time, because one day I really believe we will look back at his career the same way we have with Kubrick and Hitchcock, he's just a filmmaking genius.

    • @btn237

      It’s exciting to see Christopher Nolan returning to being unrestrained by a PG rating. To me it’s always felt as if he has the potential to live up to the reputations of the filmmakers you mentioned, but as he mentions in this interview, he’s having to find various ways to mould his movies to reach a younger or wider audience. This is something that many of the other filmmakers we consider greats (certainly the ones you mentioned) didn’t do, and in many cases actively worked against.
      Even Steven Spielberg has produced a number of r rated films!
      It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out with him and his collaborators, in his words, being able to tell the story however they see fit.
      I feel he has the fan base now to be able to do whatever he wants and my personal hope is that he continues in that direction.

    • @artofsam
      @artofsam 11 місяців тому

      @@btn237 I certainly get where you are coming from but the reason Nolan has worked within that age rating for so long is the main reason why his films are so successful, he wouldn’t had been given the opportunity to make the films he has if they didn’t make a return which they all have, even Tenet which everyone says was his flop is just false because it still eventually made its money back and considering it was at the height of a pandemic that is still blood good going. But I agree going back to films like Memento and Insomnia I’ve always wanted to see Nolan go back to those thriller routes so I’m undoubtedly excited about Oppenheimer and maybe this could be the film that gives him even more creative freedom than he already has.

Of course he responded by talking to you and enjoying talking about his work. Great Nolan interview! I definitely have not seen him so relaxed before so that was great, as a casual outside observer sometimes I get worried that these savants are so deep into their craft that they sometimes forget to just enjoy themselves and appreciate how they make the audience feel. I have my tickets for the midnight opening of Oppenheimer next week and I cannot wait.
    As for MI7, I saw it last night for the 2nd time, sucks that it and Oppenheimer come out so closely because it means MI7 only has a week in IMAX screenings. I was disappointed by the movie, even though objectively it's really good. Fallout was incredible to me so I was expecting that + more, but this couldn't reach those heights. The villain(s) didn't do much for me, there weren't as many stunts as I was expecting, and idk it felt like it was missing something. I enjoyed it more the second time but to me this is an 8 while Fallout is a 9.5.
    Luckily I only watched the teaser and none of the main trailers because they ended up giving a lot away, it would've hampered my experience even more. I'm hoping they can bounce back with the 8th installment because if they do I think it might be the greatest action movie series we've ever had, this movie and MI2 notwithstanding

    Dead Reckoning is currently holding a 96% critic rating and a 95% audience rating. It is super interesting to hear how un-spectacular the general consensus of their reviews are. I can't think of a movie that held such a high rating across critics and audiences where everyone on the reelblend podcast wasn't overwhelmingly positive about it.

    • @illuvattar
      @illuvattar 11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah but that's the nature of RT scores. It's just not representative. The percentage is defined by the amount of reviews that give the movie at least a 5.5/10, which counts as a positive review. That's why the scores are so high and why RT is a very faulty metric to judge movies. Hardly any reviewer is gonna give this film 1 or 2 stars, because the sheer filmmaking skill involved that everyone can see. I guess the review from everyone on this podcast would also probably fall in the positive side on RT. It's just fucked up everyone clings to that score when it is almost meaningless, it only gives a very general indication whether a movie is at least a little bit watchable.

      @LoganScottY 11 місяців тому +1

      @@illuvattar I certainly don't rely on RT but it's very rare for a summer blockbuster to score high 90's across critics and audience. It sounds like most of the aspects of making a great film are present which lead to its largely universal positive reviews. I didn't listen to their spoiler section of the review but I imagine its the story that isn't up to par with previous instalments since the stunts never disappoint.

    I completely agree that they showed too much on the making of Mission Impossible so much because of all the Covid drama where usually I would not know about these stunts. I think because too much news got out because of Covid it made the film less impressive in the theaters because the behind the scenes stories was more interesting than the film.

    I really liked the Mission Impossible movie. Disappointed to see Sean's low score. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. It's running neck and neck with John Wick 4 right now as my favorite movie of 2023. I think both movies could have chopped off 15 to 30 minutes and been better for it IMO. Really looking forward to seeing Oppenheimer. That movie along with Dune Part 2 are my most anticipated movies of 2023.

    Where are all the sets from Christopher Nolan's films? This would be the coolest attraction in the world! Imagine: riding on the Endurance spacecraft or the Interstellar planes, visiting Cooper's house, hanging in the Tesseract like the main character, driving the Batmobile and having a drink in its cave, walking through the spinning room in Inception, strolling through the town of Oppenheimer. Just imagine. Where is all of this?

    100% agree on what Gabe and Jake said about Mission. Having all the making of features released before the movie ruined it for me. There were no surprises, unlike Fallout.

    Dead Reckoning was an awesome time just from an entertainment standpoint, so I think you guys are a bit too harsh on it. Yeah, the story is not the most effective one, and a good point about that cliff jump. But seeing all this in Imax was breathtaking. The exposition is too much with stretched dialogues, and a bit of magic is off compared to other Mission Impossible movies. Still 8/10 for me.

    I think Dead Reckoning really got affected by shooting during covid. You could tell that a lot of coverage was shot separately, and as a result, I never felt like the movie settled into a groove. Luther and Benji basically had no character moments and they were serving the same purpose in this movie. And all their scenes/dialogue was repeating the same beat of explaining the entity and feelings of doom. Plus they really went overboard on the Dutch angles. It almost felt like a surrealist M:I movie and the whole thing played like a dream to me. Also, Ilsa deserved better and her death was too predictable. And hopefully they explain more about the villain in part 2. I thought Pom Klementieff was outstanding. A fully embodied physical performance deserving of awards recognition. I agree with Gabe, if you’re going to market the big stunt, don’t make it the climax. Make it the cold open (Rogue Nation) so then we’re like, “Okay! What now???” Anyway, I still had a decently good time with it, just a bit disappointed considering I really think the premise was great and the opening scene on the sub did a great job setting everything up.
