    The Porsche Boxster undeniably caught a bad rap for at least a decade, and sometimes still does: "The baby Porsche", "Hairdressers car", and so on. Growing up in that era, some of those stereotypes undeniably wore off on me, not to that extent, but just enough that I never gave early Boxsters the time of day.
    Quite frankly, driving the 981 GT4 brought the entire brand into focus for me, and I've been obsessed with owning something akin to that car ever since. Now we arrive at the 987 Boxsters and Caymans, the Porsche's I could pretty reasonably purchase without a mortgage. Going into this drive I really hoped this 2006 Boxster S would offer as much as the owner claimed... maybe the 987 would be my route into the club.

      what?! it doesn't even sound like a porsche flat 6 any more. Terrible drone. It sounded sort of ok the two or three time he actually went above 6k, but below that the stock sounds way better. I have the 987 Cayman S and I wouldn't be able to live with this sound on the daily.

      @BuzzytheBlue great job, great review and well shot, I had the black edition, then went onto the 981 s. Spot on. Hard to capture the thrill of the sound of the engine when you are almost sat on top of it. It doesnt drone, no, sounds like you are riding a missile, it revs high and it goes round corners. The analog feel makes you feel like something else. And us mortals can afford one and appreciate it.

    • @Gnrnrvids

      @@BuzzytheBlue Have you listened to the video? it was definitely a drone at around the 3-4k rpm range. Didn't start to sound ok till you opened it up and got above 5k.

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  6 місяців тому

      @@Gnrnrvids I'd hope so, since I made it lol. I think our definition of drone is just different, to me that means a booming, low resonance in the cabin, which this didn't have. (the exterior shots are all an external mic btw, so not an accurate gauge) You probably just don't dig the pitch/tone of it at low RPM. That's subjective so I can't really speak to it.

    The gen one 987 Boxster is indeed incredible value right now. They are really lovely cars. Assuming combustion cars in general are still usable and popular 20 years from now (which is a bit of an assumption, especially in Europe where they are gradually becoming harder to use), I suspect it will be hard to believe how cheap these things got. You could spend 3-4x as much even today on, say, a 997.2 and not get any more material or driving pleasure. Less in some ways. However, one thing I will say is that 987 Boxsters are a bit bendy. It's not a major issue, but you can feel them flex. It's probably more apparent with the roof up. Drive one back to back with a 981 Boxster, which really is rigid, and the difference is obvious. The 987 counters with more feedback and character, of course.

Exterior color is great and the lowered stance gives your car a more aggressive look. I really like the stock suspension on my bumpy roads but I've played with the idea of changing it up.

    Very nice video, the Boxster/Cayman is one of the best secrets in the sports car world. Always overshadowed by the more powerful 911's. But you get it now, the nimble little Boxster on a twisty back road with the top down in the summertime is what driving enjoyment is all about. Plenty of power for this lightweight car, I'm in second and third gear on my back roads winding it out between 5-7k RPM's. This is the sweet spot, in the power band and exhaust howling. I don't drive mine to go somewhere, I drive it for the fun of it.

    • @BuzzytheBlue
      @BuzzytheBlue  3 місяці тому +1

      I totally get it, fundamentally it’s most of the things I enjoy about my Z4M in a package with far more finesse. My game plan is to keep my M for top down fun (and track days) and invest in a Cayman to have a wonderful sports car experience year-round.

      @@BuzzytheBlue Good strategy since you already have a roadster. I've seen two schools of thought with purchasing a Cayman for a track car/rainy day car. Find a cheap 987.1 and strip out the interior for added weight savings and mod the crap out of it or find the best spec't 987.2 S on the market and keep it forever. The depreciation is pretty negligible for a well maintained 987 so you can't go wrong.

    Would be great if you would also mention the expense per mod in the description together with the purchase price, because I think in Europe this all together would add up almost to the cost of a 987 Spyder which I would rather have for 10 to 15k more (and often have low mileage). Modding a car can all together quickly get out of hand once you are into the project. But I have to say this is probably on of the best looking 987s I have ever seen! Kudos!

    • @Poorschedriver
      @Poorschedriver 2 місяці тому

      It is my car, and yes the modding did get out of hand LOL. However the modifications took place over the 9 years I've owned the car. In 2015 I paid $28,000USD for it and it had 28k miles on it at the time. If you were to buy it today with those miles, it may even be worth more than I paid. Nevertheless, the car has $20k in modifications, but most of that is due to the custom recaro seats, wheels and tires, and cosmetic touches like the spyder side vents and tail lights. To replicate the performance of this car, you'd be looking at about $6500 for suspension, exhaust, and shifter with cables. I'd have loved a spyder but the roof is a PITA (and I do drive with the top up a considerable amount), and the only way I'd have one is with the factory bucket seats and after covid the prices just got ridiculous. I've done over 700 miles in a spyder and it is without a doubt the best car I've ever driven, it's perfect, but IMO it's not worth me trading my car and plunking down $55k when I could just mod mine. The spyder has more torque and is slightly more nimble since it's 100ish lbs lighter, but to all but the most hardcore the difference would be hard to tell.

    Great review! Have you driven a 911 yet? I'm curious as to what you'd think of it compared to the mid-engine sweetness that is the 987 chassis.. I had a 987.1 Cayman S (sold it to a good friend), but looking at 997s (imo, the quintessential water-cooled 911) and drooling, lol... I haven't driven one.. yet

    • @Poorschedriver
      @Poorschedriver 5 місяців тому +1

      When I bought the car I got invited by Porsche to a driving even where I was given the chance to drive 4 cars back to back: 981 Cayman S & GTS, and 991 911 S & GTS. The 911 definitely have more shove, especially the GTS, but the mid engined cars felt more nimble and playful. The 911 is likely a blast on track with the corner exit traction advantage, but I fell in love with the Cayman GTS. Fortunately I was able to add one to the stable last year. That's not to say I wouldn't own one, but given my driving style it doesn't warrant the price premium for me. Plus, cayman and boxster have 2 trunks!

    • @dre32pitt
      @dre32pitt 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Poorschedriver I too love the mid-engine layout, I wouldn't get a 991.. I would get a 997.2.. More analog.. A better looking 911, imo.. but they are few and far between.. 987.2 Boxster is always a thought.. I already have an ND1 Miata (I prefer the low-end torque vs. the ND2), so maybe another Cayman could work.. I'd even go for a well optioned 987.2 2.9.. Throw on some breather mods and a proper tune and I'm near 'S' power levels, but with slightly lower gearing..
      Even the 982 Base is appealing to me.. I just dont know if my brain will let me live with that noise, lolol.. 'It's dry sump.. you love dry sump..feel the mid-engine goodness!' is what i'll be telling myself, lol..

    Does car have low end torque? What about IMS? I've found an 06 S beautiful car but 20in wheels. ..opinion??

    • @Poorschedriver
      @Poorschedriver 15 днів тому +2

      Low end torque is rather subjective. It's far better than an S2000 but it's no Corvette that's for sure. Compared to a base model 2.7L I found it was sigificantly better, and better still if you buy a 987.2 which has a 3.4L DFI engine without IMS. The 06 does have an IMS bearing but 06+ has the smallest chance of failure, and also has the smallest chance of bore score which the 3.4L (up to 2008) suffer from. IMO the best cars are ones with few owners, and a solid service history. Miles aren't bad if they're the right miles and many times it's better than a car that just sits or only does short trips. Just remember there's no more expensive car than a cheap german one. Do your research and get a pre purchase inspection. Good hunting.
