I own a 981 2.7 manual (red). It’s my second one - had a first edition 986 2.5 like 23 years ago (also red, manual). You can’t go wrong as long as you pick a good one. Service history is crucial… doesn’t need to be dealer, specialists are fine. Apart from that, use it a lot, life’s too short to sweat on mileage depreciation and all that sensible stuff!

Drain holes 🤬. First time Porsche owner of a 986, from a specialist dealer, and the drain holes were clogged up. Yes, there's a module under passenger seat that got soaked, the hood arms went into panic mode overnight and the bill was nearly £2k. So definitely check them so they are clear. Looking for a 981 now, dont fancy the flat 4 of a 718 but i love the boxster, it puts a big smile on your face.

As a 981 Cayman owner who daily drives mine, I agree with everything that was discussed in this video. Absolutely recommend a pre-purchase inspection from a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic. Also, keep in mind that you need to have the funds to maintain the car, not just buy it. If you have the funds and the desire to own and drive, I 1,000% recommend buying one. They really are absolutely fantastic pieces of machinery and a blast to drive.

You all in the UK have it so good… Boxsters and Caymans are a complete bargain compared to here in the US.
The few tips I would share include: Get to know the owner as you are buying them as much as you are buying the car. Service and repair receipts matter. Always get a PPI from a Porsche specialist. And, invest in bringing the services up-to-date before you do anything else to the car.
Don’t underestimate the base models. The 987.1 with the 2.7 motor is about as trouble free as you can get. They are relative bargain as everyone thinks they “need” the S model. In reality, you’ll have more fun in the base car, IMHO.

I'll agree that the 2.7 base with a 5spd is great fun! Pulls 105 in 3rd just at redline and most places that is fast enough. Where I live there's a lot of narrow twisty back roads and the Cayman corners so well. If the sign for a corner shows 45 , 65 is easy and you can push much harder.

Finchingfield - nice! I'm on my second Boxster, and I can't recommend them (any of them) highly enough. Intrinsically great cars, with Porsche's attention to engineering detail running throughout. Oh - and they go down an Essex lane very nicely indeed... 😀
There's little you can't learn from the internet about Boxsters, and almost every issue or quirk is well-documented and (relatively) easily resolved. The trick is to approach them with a planned maintenance attitude - actively look after them rather than lazily waiting for things to break or go wrong. And find a friendly specialist to help you keep on top of the basics - easy enough to do, and definitely spend a penny, save a pound!

Hey Trevor, I would say if it is your first Boxster / Cayman it might be safer buying from a good reputable Porsche Specialist then you have some cover. I'm fortunate enough to own a 981 Cayman S and I love it. They sound and drive outstanding. Whatever you do get one with the PSE spec, especially on the 981 variant. Good luck T your videos just keep getting better :-) Well done gents.

Hi, great vid. I brought my first Porsche cayman 987 4 years ago and now my son drives it and so I got my self a Porsche Boxster 981 only a few weeks ago. No regrets on either. I purchased both from a garage, and I still had the inspection done as peace of mind.
The 981 Boxster is so much more modern than the 987 cayman in terms of interior and exterior. But I do feel the cayman even though 7 years older handles at least 10% better than the boxster, due to the rigid roof. So something to note when buying Boxster vs cayman, but personally for me the open top motoring outweighs the difference in handling, which my personal choice. Anyway I own both and either will be great

I've been lucky enough to have been invited on three separate occasions to drive Porsches around their Silverstone track. I am a Porsche owner myself. It's an afternoon drive with lunch included. I've driven various 911s, Boxsters and Caymans. I have driven Boxsters/Caymans back to back. You literally drive the car around the track for a while, picking up speed as you gain confidence. I'm a regular Joe who loves all cars and I love speed, so eventually I was hurtling around the track reasonably quickly. You have a Porsche trainer with you in the passenger seat. You literally hop from one car to another... Boxster.. then Cayman.. back to Boxster.. Cayman.. whatever you like. Now, what I would say to you from my experience, driving those cars fast around a track for the entire afternoon is that I could perceive zero difference between them in handling, grip, speed etc. Both the Boxster and Cayman feel exactly the same. The only difference is that in one car you're sat within a hard top, whilst in the other you're in a soft top, that you can have down if you prefer. Maybe your seeing a difference between the 987 (more steering feel?) and the 981 rather than between the hardtop and soft top? Always worth remembering that the Cayman is a Boxster with a top added, rather than the other way around. It's just a coupe version of the Boxster. The boxster was designed to be sufficiently rigid in its design from conception, so adding a hard top should make little difference from a design pint of view.

Last summer I purchased my 986 Boxster S 2003 (facelift) for £8,250. It has a great spec, good service history, matching hard-top and has only done 60k miles. I honestly can't imagine getting more car for the money. I'm not mechanically minded at all, so paid £250 for a pre-purchase inspection and report from an independent inspector (don't use AA, they're very poor). Great cars, unbelievable value at the moment.

@@olivedrab the porsche 981 boxster/cayman (2012-2016) is definitely the sweet spot for these cars: any year will do, but your focus should be on mileage
and regular maintenance. later 718 models reverted to four cylinders, with (even) more electronics; so best to stay away from those. the earlier 987 series cars
have the bonus of being the last with hydraulic steering before the 981 moved to fully electronic; but this (minor) disadvantage is more than made up for
by the better, more aggressive look of the 981. however, keep in mind that prices are rising rapidly for 981s...and for good reason.

@@donkeyshot8472 I had a chance to drive both the 981 and recently the 718. Agree that the 981 is the move. More aggressive sounding. Gotta get be behind a wheel of a 987 to compare the steering though. But either way I like the look of the 981 more, like you said.

Just to add my twopence, I would say that the standard exhaust note of Porsches is wonderful. By that I mean you do not need to seek out a car with the "sports exhaust(pse)". The standard exhaust is simply great as it is - loud and rorty and as you accelerate the engine screams through that exhaust. The sports exhaust adds artificial "pops and bangs".. sounds like the car has bad flatulence.. but do you really want that? Personally, I find it irritating, and dare I say it, something you'd hear coming out of the back of a Fiesta with a big exhaust driven by an 18 year old. I think it's awful. But if that's what you like.. pop..popping down the road, then get a sports exhaust, otherwise don't bother.

that`s the present-day porsche boxster 718, in production since 2016. the disadvantage of the car is the reversion to four cylinders, with a loss of the typical
porsche six-cylinder sound note, more reliance on electronics and generally higher prices. for boxster/caymans, the sweet spot is definitely the 981 model
