Good to see you are doing the back flushing of your Sawyer as I suggested before your hike! Also with the quilt since you didn't get a sewn in footbox to protect against drafts when it is cold tuck the excess fabric inside the quilt after you sinch it down and tie it closed with the shock cord inside the footbox. A bit more effective than sticking a sock in the hole.
As a Dad of 5 adult kids I can tell you your mother had more fun packaging that box than you did opening it! Supporting our kids is one of the great joys of life as we get older. She gave you some great stuff! Hike on!
I really love your posts .. you're intrepid ! In my 20s I hiked all of the Presidential Range and a good deal of the New England sections of the AT ... Now 64 , I'm sort of hooked on long day hikes in my native New Hampshire ... Thanks again for your inspiring posts ...!
Have watched 20-24 without commenting (I did hit like though) so here is my comments for the last few! FABULOUS! I’m so enjoying your adventures and for all of the great hiking info. 🤙
The touch of your mother since the preparation for this Hiking... it has been marvelous !!! But, the Milkshake hour was something else too 😋😋😋 I like so much the homemade ones 🤪 See ya tomorrow !!!
Ha! Ijust ordered the enigma..its a 0 degree 950 wide....can't wait until it gets cold! I'm behind on your vids...but I'm pretty sure you recently passed through shenedoah. My B-inlaw I and did a section and stayed at calf mtn then blackstone hut. thanks for all of the tips!
Stay safe on trail. Right after I watched this video I got prompted by UA-cam to watch another video about rattlesnake bite on AT (dated May 31, 2021 video). Rescue crew had to cut down trees for helicopter extraction. This young guy and lady both have channels (they are the hikers who did rattlesnake bite video) and are hiking AT behind you. I started watching some of her other videos. They are doing 19 to 26 mile days and when they get their hiking legs they will be going over 30. Can't believe she got her pack down to fraction over 10 pounds (without food). Did not see a stove or fuel - maybe the guy had stove in his backpack. Wish I was younger and in better shape because it looks like fun hiking AT. I will keep watching your adventure.
Your mom is a great trail angel from home!! Try nutritional yeast, its full of vitamins and minerals and very light to pack out. Tastes like parmesian. Stay safe and healthy. ATB
Will be driving up that way, going from Florida to NY, cutting across Asheville. Would have loved to have dropped off some trail magic since I'm super enjoying your journey, but sounds like you guys will be in a camp-only section. Good luck!
Kelly- for relief from the bugs, my wife Jill recommends RAD Natural insect repellent that is all natural, pleasant odor, and is good against ticks, mosquitoes, flies, gnats, lice, and ants. We use it in the ADK’s and it works great. Also, Avon Skin-So-Soft works great. If you can give us a destination/time we’ll send you some!!
In case you have not heard it before, you must make harpers ferry we by July 1. Why? If you do not it is not likely you will get to katahdin before it closes. So as of now that will take 18 miles a day without any zeros! So I would plan on flipping to katahdin when you get to harpers ferry and go SOBO. It’s cool you will see lots of folks you may have seen early on. The north it harsh In October! Better to avoid! You will also be in with the SOBO starters. Carry on, you rock! Cakes husband here.
Hikers can still climb Katahdin until the snow closes the mountain. I don't think you can camp at Katahdin Stream (inside park) after Oct. 15th but you can still climb the mountain. Sometimes it closes earlier than the 15th due to early snow but usually it's around the 22nd.
Rereading what you've wrote. I'm wondering where you live ? I've camped at Baxter until it closed the campgrounds (Oct. 15th) and don't consider it "harsh" at all. Cold, some nights, yes but not winter camping. 32 degree nights are common in early Oct. Days can get up to the 70's. 60's is most common.
I went up katahdin sept 13, tee shirt at the start, by the time we got to the table lands it was freezing rain and everything was covered in ice. It was so scary and dangerous. The wind was 30 +mph and I was blown off many rocks on the way down. Most hikers in Maine in October have very cold nights, yes there are warm spells but mostly it is cold. For southern folks that is considered harsh.
@@aubreyansell1019 Ha ha ! That is true. I'm from NH so used to the cold weather. 40 degrees is balmy in winter for me. I remember being in Florida (Imokolee) one day in the spring and it was about 40 degrees and I was wearing a short sleeved T-shirt when I went to a convenience store to get my morning coffee. Three guys were standing outside in winter jackets ! They took one look at me and said, "You must be from the North !" I laughed and said, "Yes." The weather surprises most people (on Mt. Washington and Katahdin) that aren't aware of how fast it can change. Park Rangers try to warn people before they summit of this fact so they can be prepared. Glad you made it down safely.
I just have to ask you this Kelly, when you are out hiking do you wear makeup? My husband and I watch you all the time and he always says she’s got makeup on! But I believe you just have a natural beauty, inside and out! God Bless! 💙 Love, Beth from Kentucky!!
@@kellyhays23 Me either much especially since having to wear the mask with COVID and I wear glasses so you can hardly see my face anyway. It does look like you are wearing eyeshadow though, and it does look good.
Morning Kelly! Zero day and new gear day! Awesome! That was a very cool looking general store! That is one thing that is totally better in the south! You will love that quilt! You picked great colors! Just try to keep that antihistamine cream away from it! Great job on the resupply Mom! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful

That was a great video, not too many hikers vlog a resupply unpacking. It’s neat to see!

Snakes in Georgia are no joke. However, the man who was bitten was bushwhacking off the trail to get to a peak.

What would you do without mom:-) the milkshake looks good.
what happened to Stephanie and the puppy
. . . you might be the unicorn!
Wow,that milk shake looks great. Have a great time .
How nice it is to sleep in a normal bed after the tent.
Have a great day!
How is it possible you still don’t have a trail name? You are going to get a name based solely on the fact you don’t have one yet.
Can you enlighten me on your footwear please ?
Good Morning
Good morning
Get your sleep in
Ok. What about animals? Any runins. I'm thinking the scary type.
Since nobody will give you a trail name, I bestow your trail name to be Milkshake in honor of this video.
