Jaime tells LatestSightings.com how this sighting unfolded:
“We were visiting the Kruger National Park and were doing what everyone does, looking for animals! We had stopped at Satara, one of the main rest camps, for a bathroom break and an ice cream. We drove out of the camp and saw 2 or 3 cars stationary on the side of the road. We stopped to see what these visitors were looking at and saw mommy wildebeest standing over her baby.”
“Initially, we did not see the jackal, but we quickly then realised that the mom was protecting her newborn from them because they were going for the calf!”
“It seemed like the jackal were planning their moves strategically because every time the mom would turn around to chase one jackal away, the other would sneak up from behind and take a bite at the calf. It was very disturbing and we tried to remain hopeful for the little one.”
“You can hear the exasperated reactions on the video, every time the baby got on its feet we were relieved at the thought that this might be the opportunity for it to actually get away but then we felt completely distraught when the jackal or the mom would bring it down again.”
“It was unbelievable when the mom kicked the baby down by accident but even more so when the mom threw the baby through the air with her horns in the end. After the last blow, we realized that it was more than likely over for the little calf and we couldn’t bear watching the sighting anymore. We drove away and I was in tears.”
“This was an extremely rare sighting for us. Even though it was emotional, I think it was probably an amazing opportunity to catch it on film too. You need to have a strong heart to watch this, even more so to see it happen right before your eyes and knowing that there is nothing you can do because this is the way of survival in the wild.”
“The only thing that helped was thinking that the jackal probably also had babies to feed. As we left, more cars arrived but the sighting spot wasn’t crowded and we had an unobstructed view the entire time. I wish we stayed a while longer to see how it ended, all I know is that this is a sighting I will never forget.”

I know a lot of people feel bad for the baby wildebeest. However there might be little jackal puppies that are hungry. Not only do predators have to hunt for themselves, they also have to hunt for their babies that need the meat and protein in order to grow and survive. It's a vicious cycle but it works.

Yeaaa... NO! She failed miserably when she bulldozed it! Plus, It died and was eaten! You can read in the description that it said “it didn’t go down without a fight” because once a predator see that any prey is injured they will keep at it night and day so in similar cases the mom will give up before the dogs will because for her its fight on, risk going hungry, and even eaten herself or just leave and give birth to a new baby and for the dogs their meal is right in front of them and has one foot in the grave so I suspected that it didn’t survive from past instances because even a small injury can mean death even more so for a baby!

Wildebeest calf actually have one of the best defensive mechanism than other baby ungulate. They can stand up and outrun hyena within the day it was born. This one seemed weak and sickly.

Never, ever underestimate the underrated Jackal. Make no mistake these little guys have big hearts and aren't afraid to take on bigger targets than a wildebeest. They have even been video documented attacking lions. What little gems! Another great video @KrugerSightings!

I think the calf die'd. There is a video of a moose who's defending her calf against 3 to 4 wolves and I think it's in the United States but it's the same thing where the mother moves tramples and stomps the calf several times in the course of the battle before the calf is finally dragged away and the mother gives up,
At a certain point mama is just gonna out of steam and cannot rescue her babe. Those jackals have ceaseless stamina. With every bite on the calf, it debilitates it. And what so often happens is that mom kills the calf in an attempt ti allow it to escape.
Instead of giving a charge the mother would have done well to stand in the same place protecting the little one.
They are not that smart to strategize correctly. I mean they are really dumb.
If she had a little more brain cells, she could have lifted the baby and carried him on her back. Or move him to a wall of sorts (tree or brush) and then just stand in front of him, back to wall and wait the attack out, no need to run around.
@Jose Andres Santos Gomez Of course I'm not expecting it. I said IF she was more intelligent animal, she could have found a way. There are plenty of animals that understand "back against a wall" defense and "carry the offspring to safety". Just seems like a waste of energy from nature to give so much strength and that little brain power.

Whilst they aren't on the scale of Wild Dogs, or at least I've not seen them at that scale, Jackals seem to be pretty cooperative. One false attacks to pull Wilde-mom's attention away, the other goes in for a few bites.
Wilde-mom was tough and drove them off, but it seems the calf still sustained a lot of damage.

I've seen several videos of wildebeest mothers that out of sheer desperation & panic, they attack their own calf by mistake. Often failing to understand they are attacking the wrong target, & all you see is a calf twirling up in the air & landing hard on the ground. I wonder if the initial injury on the calf's left flank was done by the mother itself.
I think it was. Looked more like a hole from being gored than a bite.
Course, they are very dumb and incompetent. Thats why in the wild they are esten alive in thr most humiliating form

That was a Zebra.
Wildebeest newborn is the animal that takes the shortest time to learn to run. Usually a calf can run within an hour after birth. This calf seems to have been born more than an hour giving that the umbilical cord/placenta is no longer attached to the wildebeest mom, but this calf seems unable to run to protect itself. I hope they have a good ending.

After the spotted hyena... the SH actually hunts 80+% of its own food and is extremely efficient, its success at hunting is again 80+% of their attempts, as opposed to say... lions which catch/kill their prey 15 - 20% of attempts. Some larger clans of SH have been filmed bringing down a Cape buffalo! I saw (online) a huge female SH bring down a big antelope, twice her size, on her own! But yes, jackals are very powerful lil animals too! *sorry I got a little carried away 😊
