Amazing footage of leopard catching, playing with and then killing impala in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa
The Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve shares a 50km unfenced border with the Kruger National Park this private reserve is second to none in terms of wildlife encounters. Due to the high degree of habituation the reserve offers outstanding photographic opportunities, particularly of the elusive leopard. The valuable water source supplied by the Sabie and Sand rivers ensure that this diverse land sustains one of the highest concentrations of animal species to be found anywhere in Africa.

I can't imagine anything more terrifying than knowing you're about to die but can't do anything about it.

I very much doubt that a baby impala has any awareness or knowledge of death.
Especially a baby like the impala. ' Mom where are you?'

First off ... this was some incredible footage so THANKS for positing it. Never saw anything like it before. Secondly - every species of cat that I'm aware of has this same trait in them. They seem to find some kind of pleasure in taunting their prey before taking their life away from them.
Poor creature can't defend herself, mostly this small and weak animals are always targeted to prey of monster predators. I really hate these animals.

@@rosiecua1474 I’m vegetarian b but I’ve no issue with humans eating meat. We are omnivores. Also big cats are carnivores. If they don’t eat they and there little babies die. Surely you wouldn’t prefer that would you?
We have a cat. The cat sometimes “hunts” bugs, moths, beetles. And the resemblance in the behavior of our cat and this leopard is truly uncanny! They do the same things: periodically tap the prey with the paw, let go and then catch, hold it by the paw and look around as if to make sure no one is going to take it from them, put the prey in the mouth and then let it go, except our cat fits the bugs in the mouth completely unlike the leopard. Clearly the behavior is “programmed “ in their genes.
Playing is fun. Most cats like to play. Good practice!!

Urban, or is it rural, legend... when's the last time you saw an impala or gazelle rescue a baby in distress? They just run away. If it was a buffalo or wildebeest, maybe that answer would be true. Clickbait not baby bait...
@Jason Hitchcock read
Jason Hitchcock b
@Jason Hitchcock D
An impala would never EVER come back to save its baby from the jaws of death, they'll simply run away and leave their baby to either die or miraculously escape. An impala's body is built for speed, not fighting. A healthy, full-grown impala will never risk its own life even to save its baby. An elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, Zebra, or water buffalo would, but an impala, gazelle, or any other skinny, sleek-framed animal in the order "Artiodactyla" would not. The bigger ones that I mentioned before might try to save their baby IF they think it's worth it.

Leopard is getting pissed.
Leopard: Bro, it's not fun if you don't run.
+Nick Gherz He is pissed because he got such a little one that is why he is resorting to playing with his food.
The thing that makes this sad is the fact the baby Impala knew it couldn't run so had to just stand there.
doddsydodds It was waiting for its mom to rescue it
+doddsydodds it tried to run several times, each time the leopard caught it and hurt it with its claws.
It's nature don't be a bitch about it
+doddsydodds the crazy thing is that if all the impalas ran straight toward the leopard at full speed then the leopard would probably run away and the baby would be saved
+chinchy111 and the Leopard would go hungry and starve to death. How is that fair ?
Beautiful. Like this planet. National geographic channel.
All cats have quick reflexes but I think the leopard is about as close to zero reaction time as a nonfiction creature can get. Even a baby gazelle is probably faster than you think but every time the little one here tries to move the leopard is there in an instant to block the escape.
What makes me sad is not the footage but the people in the comments blaming the leopard, as if it was evil or bad, and saying that they should kill it or whatever. Listen people, animals cannot be bad or evil. It is just the way it is so don’t anthropomorphize animals. The leopard has to eat just as the impala and has every right to live. This footage is just a very interesting behaviour, not an act of evil.
@@jorgesobrino_y ... you are 100% correct!
.
While it is difficult on human sensibilities to see such behavior, this is just nature playing itself out. The leopard behavior is not at ALL unlike that of my domestic house cat and most certainly where her instincts originate. There is an abundance of impala for the VERY specific reason of sustaining the leopard population. Should the nature of this balance stray too far in either direction, it will be corrected over time.
.
The leopard is definitely not evil, it is doing what nature intended it to do.... not only survive, but hone its skills to ensure that survival.
@@stickygrenade ... which is why the leopard is NOT evil... it is following its nature, just as the impala. The one fundamental difference humans have from pretty much ALL other species of life, is we will nearly _always_ adjust our surroundings, based on social influences. We have TV, music, technology and those who are famous creating influence and we go outside of our "nature". The leopard and impala have no such influence, except that which humans may force upon them (encroaching on their habitat and such). Both of these creatures are just doing what is 100% natural and we have no right to pass judgement on it being right or wrong.... it just "is".
@@stickygrenade yes, I agree with you, if it was a matter of life or death of a human being, even if I didn't know him or her, and I had a gun in my hands (which I wouldnt cause I hate guns) I would shoot the leopard because Im not a crazy animal advocate that would rather save an animal than a human. However, let me put another example. You find a non poisonous snake behind some boxes in your house. It bites you because you didn't know it was there. A lot of people would automatically feel like revenging and would kill the snake because it bit them. That's how people work. I personally wouldnt because I understand that the snake is not evil, it was just protecting itself. You get my point right?
A
@@jorgesobrino_y ... well said!
.
It is funny.... we humans have ZERO issue killing certain critters, just for the most miniscule offenses. If a fly is buzzing around, I kill it without a moments hesitation, because it is "there". It is just flying around, but pestering the crap out of me, so I deem capital punishment is necessary. Now, if the fly was slow and non-evasive, I would catch it in a glass and let it go outside, because it is just doing what flies do! I will capture spiders in a glass and let them go outside, if it is convenient. If they are walking around in the shower pan, I get them wet and wash them down the drain, so I am not very consistent.
.
Where humans have the difficulty, generally, is if they can "relate" to the creature. We have dogs and cats as pets, but eat cows for food without hesitation. In Korea, I believe it is, dogs and or cats are often eaten just as we do cows and they are sacred in India. We in the USA are absolutely APPALLED by the thought of eating a cat or dog and get outraged at the consideration of it.
.
This all comes down to how a society views different creatures and over time, such views are subject to change.
Takes “playing with your food” to a whole new level.

Indeed, there is no change on the earth, such as that of the trees and animals changing their garb every year, but through its orderliness it indicates Your existence and unity. There is no animal but through its sustenance being compassionately provided in relation to its need and weakness, and its being given all the members and faculties necessary to pursue its life, it testifies to Your existence and unity. There is not a plant or animal created before our eyes in the spring that through its wondrous art, its subtle adornment, its being distinguished from all other creatures, and through its order and balance, it makes you known. The marvels of Your power which fill the earth and are known as plants and animals, and their creation from seeds and grains and droplets of fluid, perfectly, without error, in adorned fashion, each with its distinguishing features, form a testimony more brilliant and powerful than the sun to the existence, unity, wisdom, and endless power of their All-Wise Maker.

I think this is for practicing raising babies other large cats after killing the adults have done similar things in fact there's been a house cat that raised a baby squirrel.
+Peter Coimbra or they have always done this and we have never been able to film it.
dcos5 Yes, also maybe true! Or they learned with humans makings hostages, lol
you right guys have you ever watch how smart the animals are documentry fucking hill they are smarts man
It looks like my cat playing with a mouse before he eats it.
I know right 😂👌🏽
But I am sure my cat did love mice. Once I set both into the bath tube (because my cat always did hurt the mouse when catching it again) and my cat was so happy, in distance it turned on her back, just of joy. Then my cat friendly and carefully came closer to the mouse, but the mouse did attack my cat, when their headscame closer!
What a pitty. I liked the mice very much, but also my cat.
The leopard is so sneaky that you don't even realize you've been eaten.
To me it looked like the leopard was giving the mom or dad a chance to switch places with the baby. 😂
Hugo Valdez that’s what I observed too
For real my thoughts exactly
Same lol😂
Same
You're dreaming Hugo Valdez.
This only happens when the Leopard is NOT YET HUNGRY but does not want to miss the opportunity to prepare a food stock for the next meal.
No, nearly all cats play with their food.
