- A 7-year-old girl died and her brother was left in critical condition after they fell into a sand hole and got trapped Tuesday at a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Now, a Florida professor is explaining the dangers of digging sand holes and what parents should know to keep kids safe at the beach.

Once some friends dug a pretty deep hole at the beach and one of the guys jumped in there and said bury me, and sat in it with his legs crossed Indian style so they buried him with his head out and almost immediately after they finished burning him he started trying to get out. This guy is 6’4 athletic 215lbs and he struggled so hard that the boys started laughing thinking it was funny and dude had a panic attack and even with him trying to free himself and 5 guys trying to dig him out it took a long time to get him out. He couldn’t breathe, the sand was so heavy. I can’t imagine what these parents are going through, what an absolute tragedy. Rest in peace sweet angel ❤️

When I was a kid, we went to Atlantic Beach in South Carolina every summer and my dad always told me, "Don't dig no holes, just build something!"
But you have to dig a hole to get the sand out to use to build something.
@@BryanClark-gk6ie Did you listen to the expert in the video?
@@BryanClark-gk6ieno u don’t
No u dont , ur already at the beach, just hse the pail for water and than pack it down before u start building, duh ;D @BryanClark-gk6ie
@@BryanClark-gk6ie It's pretty easy to skim sand off the surface to use to build something. No holes necessary
I think signs should be posted on beaches, warning people of the potential risk of these things happening. Not everyone knows that this can happen. 😢
you cant prevent stupidity and you cant regulate everything. I know people arent too smart but if someone have to teach you everything, then sometimes these things happen. The parents should be smart enough to know that the kid shouldnt have dug so deep . If they didnt know, then this is a terrible way to learn
Totally agree!
@bjvu9460 right and I bet there's a lot of "obvious" things you don't know. I hope one of those things happens to you, and you get mocked for it. Then maybe you'll learn to not be so insensitive. That's the last thing these parents ever wanted to happen; their kid dying on vacation. People always have to point the finger, like stfu and have a heart for 5 seconds.
Terrible! IM AT A COMPLETE LOSS OF WORDS.
There are already signs for rip currents, this could easily be added. It is absolutely NOT common sense or common knowledge if you aren’t from around here… any more than how to get out of a rip current.
That is a massive hole. I'm amazed a 7 year old could move all that sand without ANYONE seeing too, and I'm not just talking about the parents.
🤦🏻♂️
Really?
Someone else dug the hole and left it there.
People do it all the time.
I'm not sure I've ever been to the beach without seeing at least one...excluding wildlife preserves/parks.
@@AndyDrake-FOOKYT Makes sense. I was having a hard time picturing little toy shovels moving that much sand without breaking.
It is that size due to rescue teams body recovery efforts.
@@AndyDrake-FOOKYT So, to understand correctly...If someone first dug a deep hole in the beach sand, then I assume they filled it back up with the sand, so when the next person comes and digs another hole in the same place, how does it cave in, if the sand is back in the hole from the first digger? Sorry about the tongue twister, hope you understand
Thank you for having this very good explanation. Of how sand acts when holes dug. Prayers for this whole family.
Wish they had an animation to really show the dangers 😒
That's too much work for a newsroom.
The animation would have been some 2 bit Microsoft paint 🎨 crap anyway.

When I was young, maybe 13-15 a similar situation happened in my town where teens were digging tunnels into the sand at a lake. Fast forward my kids are at the beach, I walk up to find they had “buried” my youngest up to her neck, not completely vertical, but I kind of freaked out. However I stayed calm and said hey guys, this isn’t safe, let’s get her up and out of there! I am so sad for this family, people just don’t know.
That is a horrible death
That is so very sad. I lived near the ocean for 20 years in Florida and never heard of this happening.
Agreed I've never heard of this I'm 41. Construction accident okay. But at the beach? Anyone?
I grew up in landlocked Kansas and somehow I knew that sand doesn't stick together well, so don't dig any holes in it. I do a lot of reading, so perhaps I read this somewhere.
Truly tragic. Grew up on the atlantic coast -- now I know why are parents never let us dig a hole deeper than about 8 inches and about a foot wide. Strangely I never asked why but taught my kids the same.
I study history and I've heard of this, but not on a beach with dry sand. A little kid accidently built a grave and nobody had the sense to stop her. A lot of cultures actually dig into the ground to build survival and traditional structures. I've seen kids tunnel into soil and snow and that is very common. Sand is another story.
@@purplespeckledappleeater8738 I suspect there may have been a certain amount of water in that sand, and it held together long enough to form walls on the side. Otherwise, if sand is totally dry, it just runs back into the hole. I don't think you could dig a large hole with sides. Just my thoughts.
Where I work, we have very strict policies dealing with excavations. Digging a hole in sand is downright insane, and potentially deadly.
Stupidity at its finest!
Where do you work?
@@aresorum A major chemical plant.
“Digging a hole in sand is downright insane” 😂 …mental insanity? 😆
That's why they use "shoring" on the sides of ditches, when they're digging to install buried utility lines. They looser the soil, ie., sandy or loamy vs clay based, the easier it is for the sides to collapse.
As you sink and sand collapse. It’s like crushing you. Can’t breath. Sad
This is so scary. I have a picture of my Grandson at the beach in a 2 foot hole, I’m sure that his mom and dad would have never expected anything like this. I’m so glad that we now know this. My heart hurts for this family 😢
Thank you Professor.
WHY, WHY wasnt adults supervising them? Where were the adults?
"EXACTLY" !!
You’d be surprised how many people don’t care about looking after their kids when at parks or beaches.
Expecting other adults to do it without asking as usual.
I saw in an earlier story that the parents were helping them dig the hole, but I'm not sure if that's true.
The parents were helping to dig. I agree with an earlier comment, the hole was there already and they pry just dug more
such a good summary of information explaining the issues with this, thanks.
When I was a kid, I went to the beach. I dug a hole so deep, I saw it was hollow underneath. It was scary. I was glad I was not hurt. I never dug a hole ever again. My condolences to this family.

Sorry for the familys' loss. In Oregon we have have a few kids die from making sand caves into the dunes in the last few years and then they collapsed.
Interesting that people in these comments are saying they've never heard of people (usually kids) getting buried alive. I know I have heard several cases over the past few years nationwide.
@@culcune I never heard of it
I've heard of people being buried alive but not at the beach!@@culcune
@@Nick-zo6uk there have been several cases over the past couple decades of beach trips turning tragic. Every so often, they pop up in national news stories following people, usually teens, tunneling on the beach during trips to the ocean. They are unusual, which is why they are rarely heard of, but because of how easy it is for an 'innocent' tunnel to turn deadly, that is why they are reported on national news stories.
🙏😢
Thank you professor! Every mom and dad needs to drill this home to their kids when hitting the beach. Kids do listen and they remember the important things their parents say. So speak up mom and dad.
Thank you professor? Give me a break just because he's half dead 80 years old doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about. What he said made no sense. There was something more to hear than just falling into a hole that hadn't been filled in correctly. Cuz he didn't say she dug the hole he said the hole was dog in the past and wasn't filled in correctly and then she fell in and it collapsed. Makes no sense. There's more to it
@@djajax35 The little girl and her brother dug a hole in the beach. She was down about 5 feet. That is huge, at that depth you need to push out the opening out about 10 to 20 feet to keep the sand from collapsing in. So at the surface the opening would be 20 feet across and at the bottom 2 or 3 feet wide. A mild grade not a steep. We hear about construction workers dying the same way on job sites when the do not use a steel box frame to keep the earth in place. Not only is sand heavy it squeezes you so tight you can not inflate your lungs. So yes Thank you Professor a man of Wisdom and kind enough to pass on his thoughts to folks who did not know about this.
I'm in my 60s and have lived in Florida my whole life. I've never heard of this before. I know about sink holes, but have never heard of this?
why would you even bring up a sink hole that has nothing to do with this
@@jazziez6467 Just that. I know it has nothing to do with it.
They said they dug a hole 6 feet down!? Terrible.
It's not that, if you dig a hole deeper then your standing height if it collapses you die. There is no way out. At any construction site where there is a hole or trench you will see precautions taken in the event of collapse from solid steel frames to sloping of the hole itself. If dirt or even snow collapses on youin enough volume you are done.
I am reading now that an adult dug the hole. The kids found it later and were playing in it
Not one adult recognized the eminent danger? Not one? Fn heck
I bet the person that dug that hole is sorry now for what he caused
The kids dug the hole
Hardly his fault 🕳️
@@elena5920you think 2 little kids dug a 5 to 6 foot deep hole alone? With toy shovels? I don't think you are correct. It was either a hole left behind or dug by the grown ups
What a tragedy!
Don’t dig in sand it doesn’t stick together cohesionless
Sand or dirt, holes or tunnels they're all creepy, i always think how can they keep them from total collapse.
Reminds me of a area around the Great Lakes. Over a period of many years, old forests near the water can get covered over by sand dunes leaving large tree trunks buried in over 20 feet of sand. Gradually ants will eat the old trees below the sand leaving a softened hollowed tube not visible from the surface. One person, who was dug out and saved, fell 12 ft. into one. Other people have just dissappeared in the area.
Thank you for this invaluable information for everyone and i heard it clearly all the way through.
It's so sad 😢
THIS PRESENTATION WAS SO INFORAMTIVE! I THINK THIS IS MUST-SEE FOR ALL PARENT GLOBALLY. THE PROFESSOR BRINGS THIS DOWN TO A LEVEL THAT PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO. HE IS ON POINT AND VERY KIND. THANKS FOR YOUR WORDS, PROFESSOR. WE APPRECIATE YOUR TAKING THE TIME TO SPREAD THE WORD AND IN SHORT, EDUATE US ALL! BLESSINGS~~
What I really don't understand: how come that hole was not filled by ocean water, it was so close to the shore.
A friend from Texas I had met at a conference, died in Florida digging sand tunnels for some strange reason that I wonder if was like a medical condition related to AHI's. Like why would you dig a sand tunnel? Anyone with a sane mind would know, not to dig in sand unless maybe sand stone. There is quick sand as well, that like swimming, seems children should all be trained in how to deal with the range of scenarios so they know.
I HEARD THE ONES WHERE THEY GET BURIED TO THEIR NECK WITH A SHIRT OVER THEIR HEAD FOR SUN AND THE 4 WHEELER LIFEGAURD RUNS OVER THE HEAD ONES ...(CAPS LOCK TONIGHT, WHATEVER )

That is just so sad
Truly a tragedy. I can't fathom the pain this family must be going through. In terms of rescue, it sounds like the wet sand in the vertical wall of the sand hole dries out and then collapses (since dry sand is only stable at a 33 degree angle--quite shallow), and then when you try to dig the person out of the sand, the hole keeps refilling with sand. Would it work to use buckets of ocean water to rewet the sand around the person and the wall of the sand hole, temporarily restabilizing it so it doesn't continue collapsing while you dig the person out?
I would worry if rewetting the sand immediately around the person might cause even more weight and pressure on them, but that added stability form the water a little further away might be an incredible help
It might create a suction that latches onto the person, further disabling their ability to get out
Rest in peace little one 💞
I lived in daytona beach for thirty five years. Me and my kids have played in the sand and I have buried them in the sand probably a hundred times. I had no idea it was this dangerous. Now I feel like a fool
Making a one foot deep hole and covering the kids body leaving their head out to make a funny picture isn't what is dangerous. Those kids were playing in a deep hole. He said 5 to 6 feet deep. A seven year old kid couldn't even see over the top of a hole that deep. I don't understand why a hole that deep would be dug to begin with, let alone left open for kids to play in.
I've never heard of this. There should be a warning sign on beaches of the dangers.
I’m from Huntington Beach, Ca - I grew up on the beach and I had zero idea this could happen.
Well we live and learn as I did not know the mechanics of the movement of sand in this nature. Sad to see the family lamenting the loss of a child so early in life.
if he didnt explain this to you, you couldnt figure out that sand is not a stable structure !!! really? wow... Maybe he should also do a course on water
@@bjvu9460 Get off your high horse. I promise you there are lots of things in this world you don't know about that are complete common sense to others. No need to be a jerk.
I was SHOCKED at how heavy sand is. I went to the garden center and a tall, muscular, young man slowly carried a dish pan full of slightly moist, loose sand to my car. When I got home, I tried to casually lift it from the trunk and nearly broke my back. It was only about 2 gallons of sand. I'm little so I'm not very strong to begin with but that sand definitely weighed more than an equal amount of water. And even water is heavier than I expect it to be. The man in this video isn't exaggerating when he says that sand is HEAVY!
I can't hear a thing! Its like mumbling. Can't hear
Sand in your ears, Scott?🍻😂
They must’ve had help from an adult to dig a 5 or 6 foot hole in the sand.
tragic loss and so sad for the family.... it's not just digging holes in sand, beach sand cliffs are extremely dangerous too.... parents need to have a chat about the dangers of various places they visit with their kids.... beach, forest, cliffs, busy roads, electricity, water, animals, humans, all those things that pose a risk.
When I was a young girl, we dug holes all over the beaches in Florida. This never happened.!
So sad
HEARTBREAKING. I can't imagine what this family is going through. 😢 I pray God gives them comfort as they go through the grief of this tragedy.
I didn't know this was possible, however years ago while standing knee deep in water on a shoreline in the Philippines, the sand kept moving out from under my feet. It felt odd like it was pulling me down. As i found more spots that did this and it was getting harder to pull my feet out, i went to shore. Never heard of sand actually pulling one under😢
My heart goes out to this family❤
My question is how deep a hole did those children dig, that it was able to cave in? I am really puzzled by this.
6 to 7 feet
He said about 5-6ft deep and he’s also confused how children even dug a hole this deep if they didn’t have a shovel or something
Q: What is a sand hole?
A: A hole in the sand. ~ Florida, you seriously have to up your education standards
Apparently there was an older man digging that morning and the 9 year old and 7 year old siblings were fascinated by it and continued digging in the same area. Such a tragedy and my heart goes out to the family
I remember as a kid sighns that said dont dig holes because they could damage beach rescue vehicles, often now that i know because they often aren't filled back in. Imagine them collapsing on your child!
I remember on the Monkees tv show all four of the group were in scenes at tge beach buried up to their necks. At least holes five feet deep were dug. Didn't seem so alarming a thing back then.
YES, I remember that! Ugh we are old! 😂😂
Well spoken.
Let me tell you this in 1983 l live in Ft Myers. The ft Myers international Airport is built on sand holes is what l was told.😖
Is really amazing how much is filled in areas throughout the US. Especially in the low water table areas.
Maybe we should make assault shovels illegal?
I lived in Florida for 4 years and never heard of sand holes until today.
Such a sad thing to happen.
From a news story, there was at least 1 adult digging. Got the impression it was a couple. So the kids didn’t dig that huge hole.
Being from Indiana, they probably had no clue of the dangers.
The boy was buried to his chest & he was on top of his sister.😱
So they manage to pull him out after a few minutes & then all the more sand goes on top of that little girl. SMH

I saw a video of a man getting cited by police for digging a trench (he was told to keep it less than 2 feet deep, and I guess it looked too dangerous so they came back to cite him) on a beach to let the water that collected on the beach back out to sea. He was cited for "digging holes" and I thought that was such a weird law, especially if the trapped water was causing issues for residents. No one in the comments had any idea why the law existed and just figured it was a law that existed purely for the power trip. Now I get why the law exists. This is horrifying.
Find every TV show where they show someone buried in sand, and sue them for not adding a disclaimer, encouraging kids to do reckless things. After all, we got smoking to end by banning ads, why not aim for these risky and superflous cultural activities that endanger kids?
We understand that there are a lot of dumb people like yourself but you cant regulate common sense and you are missing all of your critical thinking senses.
You would really waste money on advertising informing people of this? Poor you
That’s scary I saw some kids dig a massive whole at a beach near me, had no idea it can cause such disaster
Well now u can’t go to the beach anymore because this happens….

This is so sad and terrifying. Never heard of sand holes.
That’s a terrible way to die … I’m so sorry that happen .. we should at the beach having fun .. I never knew this can happen I have 2 girls and now I know to stay away from holes but I wish that little girl was here ..
So just to make sure I understood correctly..A sand hole is caused when a prior person digs a very deep hole, then they cover it up again with sand, then someone else digs in the same place, so if that's the case, how does the sand hole cave in if the hole was filled again with the sand in the first place?
A sand hole is never stable. If you are in over your head, your life is in danger, regardless of this was the original hole or not. There is really no need for a professor to explain further. Even if this kind of hole is less safe, it was never safe to begin with.
No, it's just a hole in the sand.
The audio was terrible.
My right ear feels neglected.
Look, I don’t want the lives of the other kids who were there to be ruined, but it’s their fault for digging that deep and convincing/allowing a little girl to get inside. Life is fragile. Condolences to the family for their loss.
I am puzzled
How come slipping inside sand hole make you die
Eg I have heard of childrenrescued after falling in a gutter or pothole,
Then how come falling in sand was so strange, sand ias even soft material rihht?

In Hawaii we dig holes like this to lay in, it blocks the wind and noise. The holes we had there were neither deep or steep sided enough to cave in on anyone. What kind of hole was this any why ? Just fit fun ?
