This has to be one of the saddest ways to lose ur kid. Couldn't even imagine telling this story to other people if it was my kid, I'd cry like a baby everytime. The thought of the sand collapsing on her and the helpless feeling trying to dig her out in time tears me apart.

It doesn't make it better or any less worse. In any way. But for claritys sake. She likely did not suffer. These cave ins ussually crush their victums to death. So fast they barely have time to realize how bad it is.

My husband of 30 years was a sailor and we were always stationed close to the beaches. We taught out kids from an early age not to dig a deep hole in the sand and to make sure they fill in any holes that they dig. Such a tragedy that should not have happened.

They dug such a massive hole because A. The parent(s) helped them OR B. The parents paid no attention whatsoever to what their kids were doing!! Either way the parent(s) must take responsibility for this tragic event. I can’t say ‘accident’ because it was inevitable that digging down that deep renders the upper sand unstable, especially if it’s very dry sand. Young kids wouldn’t obv know this, hence why the parent(s) should take responsiblity!

We have posted city ordinance sign on all beaches you cant go over 2 feet deep if you are seen digging deeper you can be fined (and its a big fine) and it depends if the officer want to arrest if its really big. We had teenagers for kicks digging 6 to 8 feet deep holes on the beach and tourist would walk along the beach at night and fall in them and die.

I've seen a program about the very same thing. The beach sand has pockets of open space below the sand & digging over one of those areas can cause the sand to completely cave in on itself. The person digging over that area can go with the sand when it caves in. The story I saw on TV was about a little boy that was walking over the sand when it gave way & he sunk completely down into the hole. He was rescued alive, however, it was a very harrowing experience for the little guy! Rightfully so!!

It can be likened to a snow avalanche, except that it involves wet beach sand. In such a scenario, it makes little difference whether the parents were directly above the individual or not. The sheer weight of the sand exerts immense pressure, leading to the expulsion of air from the lungs and the onset of asphyxiation. For both adults and children, the process is swift, and it is likely that the parents were either in close proximity or right next to the individual. However, considering that the boy's head was above ground, it is possible that he attempted to climb up before the sand caved in. Regardless of the precise location of the guardians, the situation is undoubtedly tragic.

Fascinating explanation of the properties of sand. (Which diverts some minds from my original question.) Where were the 'supervising adult(s)'? And, what were they doing as their daughter dug a deep hole?
If you don't know, then that's your answer.
Enough with the excuses. The goal should be to educate others and to prevent future tragedies, instead of '... there's nothing that could've prevented this unforeseen accident.'
Regardless if a parent was in the pit or not, common sense should've prevailed. You don't dig a hole so deep that you can't get out of it. Especially, when the walls are NOT fortified to prevent collapsing.

    • @Rivanni1
      @Rivanni1 8 місяців тому

@pvt.2426 I understand your curiosity, but I must say that I find your tone to be somewhat insensitive. I have looked into the matter you mentioned, and it appears that the children were indeed very close to them-approximately 12 feet or less, as reported by The Insider. The parents of the children immediately began digging and calling for help, but it took 15 minutes to free them. Tragically, only the boy survived, while the girl was crushed and suffocated. I hope that satisfies you and doesn't divert attention. Also, the hole would only need to be four or so feet deep, but you can look that up on your own time. I'm going back to work.

This comes from experience.)
[3] My original posted commentary or assessment was based SOLELY on the content of THAT posted video. No other outside sources or materials were researched.
And, I recognized that the reporting was lacking in 'investigative & analytical journalism'. Instead of giving viewers 'objective & relevant information', so we (as intelligent human beings) may decide for ourselves, what to think or feel, the media decided to control the narrative and manipulate your reaction.
For example, if the story was about a 'house fire' and a cat + her kittens didn't survive. Their narrative was focused on the poor kitties and presented for consumption as a 'tear-jerker'. I also feel sorry for the cats. But, I am independent enough of their mind-control to think, 'What caused the fire?', 'Allowing a child to put a space heater near her pet's bed, which was by flammable drapes, wasn't a great idea.'
[4] What happened to this little girl was tragic, but it was avoidable. Her parents will regrettably live with their mistake for the rest of their lives. Please don't spend any more of your valuable time researching for relevant details that the original video lacked. (Which was my point.)

I think a lot of us don't know that it's not okay to dig deep holes, especially if we don't live near a beach like this family didn't. It sounds like the parents and many people were right there and nobody knew to stop them from digging.

She was probably digging straight down in damp sand. It'll hold an edge like that for a little bit, but when it goes, it's like a hard wave. It most likely knocked her over.

This happens because the sand was put on the beach by the city after the sand pounded in place by the ocean was washed away in the ever more dangerous hurricanes.
How do I know this? Because this happened on the Florida beaches of my childhood.
When my mom died, I went back to her Florida home, a few hours north of Miami. I was walking on the beach with my sister, in ankle deep water. Suddenly the sand gave way like quicksand, and we were thigh deep in the sand and ocean water! Terrifying!
Happily my son was with us, and was able to pull us out.
You see, the ocean building a beach, pounding down the sand it deposits, is a completely different thing than trucks and tractors dumping sand on a beach. No strength. Air bubbles.
