Pokemon Black & White: When Everything Changed

  • This is the third and final part of a trilogy of videos in which I talk about the last 3 generations of Pokemon and how I think they relate to eachother and what they changed about the series.
If you already liked Black & White, the chances are very low that this video will change your opinion on that and that's totally fine! This video very much just represents my own personal views which I admit in the video are quite nitpicky and not something I'm trying to present as fact, or even particularly unbiased.

Gen 5 was the first (and last) Pokemon generation where it felt like the series was *actually* trying to grow up with its fans. It stands to date as (IMO) one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences of the 2010s as more and more franchises were becoming disappointments in the same time frame. By 2020 almost all long-standing franchises I grew up on (including Pokemon) are MASSIVE disappointments in their latest iterations (except Mario, Zelda, Smash, Animal Crossing), but I'm very thankful that Pokemon still appealed to me even up until 2012's Black 2/White 2 after having already graduated high school by the time of that entry's release.

    • @ryannoble8536
      @ryannoble8536 4 роки тому +65

It tried to change and evolve and make a deep story but as always, every fandom is shit she complained a LOT about it. GF listened and then we got Gen 6. Now everyone who hated it says Gen 5 is their favorite Gen now. 🙄

    • @TurboPikachu
      @TurboPikachu 4 роки тому +41

@@ryannoble8536 This also happened with Sonic. People hated 06's broken gameplay, and Sega *misheard* the fans and killed the Adventure formula. Fans didn't like the Werehog in Unleahsed, and because Sega listened, Sonic games no longer last over 15 hours like the Adventure games, Heroes, 06, and Unleashed used to and we've gone back to games being barely 5 - 8 hours. Fans didn't like Sonic Team experimenting with Sonic Lost World, and because Sega listened, we got Forces, a 2.5-hour insult that is the most boring and disappointing entry to date.
I don't hate Pokemon... Sword and Shield have *HUGE* problems but underneath all the graphical inadequacies, optimization issues, and developmental shortcuts to meet a holiday deadline, I can still see that some of the developers, artists, and composers cared. But I kinda do hate Sonic now.... There's nothing to like in Forces. It's just a horrible platformer that's worse than Colors from the Wii 10 years ago, with an avatar creator... Sonic Team could have just released the avatar creator by itself on the eShop/XBLA/PSN/Steam for $10 and it would have been a more valuable product than Sonic Forces is.

I feel like saying that Gen 5 was the last real good generation of Pokemon games. Gen 6 and 7 did introduce some really good new Pokemon and concepts, but their biggest sin is how they treat the player.
Every issue with the gen 5 games that I had can be forgiven because at the end of the day, these games do respect the players intelligence. XY and to a further extent Sun and Moon have no respect for the players intelligence or sense of adventure. I am currently playing through a host of old Pokemon games in preparation for Sword and Shield. Trying to get into Ultra Sun is a chore. Two hours in, the game has yet to let me explore and really start my adventure. XY once the first Gym was beaten I received a tiny bit of freedom.
Pokemon Emerald. Within 10 minutes I have my starter, I've beaten my rival, and I'm off on my adventure. I should not feel like the game is slamming the breaks whenever I want to go somewhere.

    • @CrazyQuilman157
      @CrazyQuilman157 4 роки тому +82

Y'know, if you actually follow the plot and lore, they specifically DID set up a medieval theme because there was actually a king with two sons who owned the Pokemon that supposedly became Kyurem when the debate between the search for and emphasis on "truth" was opposed by the hope and focus towards "ideals" between the two sons. Honestly? I feel like "truth" and "ideals" might have been a bad translation choice, but it's a debate about the way things are and the way things should be...but one of those mindsets will always be forever chasing unrealistic goals while the other is mired in complacency. Meaning that, if they stand opposed, nothing good will ever be achieved.
This is why N finally realizing he's been lied to and manipulated to believe humans only hurt Pokemon is subtly clever...but it's only in a Fridge Logic kind of way, and isn't properly expanded upon.

Regarding team plasma, I always saw two sides on it: there's the generic evil team who does bad stuff to gain power, and then there's N's team. N firmly believed in his claims that liberating pokemon was for the best, and Ghetsis simply used him to get the legendary's power. But that doesn't undermine the ambiguous morality that N presents with his view:
Throughout the game, and throughout your various encounters, N always gets even the smallest of doubts about his ideals whenever he loses to the player. This eventually builds up to the last fight for the champion title, in which both the player and N have their respective legendary backing up their philosophy. THIS battle is the thing that answers the everlasting question: "is it moral to keep pokemon in balls and make them fight?": N who raised his team with his proggresive ideals, or the player who is a talented, yet fully traditional trainer. All the games continuously praise the best trainers as those who can liberate the most potential out of their pokemon through trust and bond, and BW is no different. N doubted himself when he lost to the player in the climatic battle, when his ideals proved no better than a traditional trainer's ways. And that is what made him disappear and think about himself and his views, it is even brought up in the sequels.
The game didn't answer the morality question by: "well the other side is clearly bad guys", it answered it by: "you beat the other side at their best, and thus proved that you are better".

I know its a silly thing to care about but it felt like it added so much personality to your team and you built a bond with these digital critters. They shoulda kept doing it and it shouldve become a staple of the series. Itd help with merchandising, and since in the newer games all the pokemon battles are rendered in 3d using the same assets would make it fairly easy for a multimillion dollar corporation to do. Idk its a win win for everybody and it just seems silly they havent repeated it since in a mainline game.

Nido Hime I feel like older games have more forgettable towns and cities. Even some towns share the same theme with others unlike Sinnoh or Unova. I can vividly remember towns and cities like Lacunosa Town, Pastoria City, Opelucid City, or Celestic Town, but it’s hard to remember Azalea Town, Violet City, Celadon City, or Cerulean City. Then again, I feel as if that’s a result of what Pokémon games I grew up with compared to other Pokémon fans such as yourself. I’m personally a Sinnoh baby, and it’s my first region, so I feel more attachment and it’s more memorable for me. When people talk about Pokémon, quite often will there be an abundance of disparaging of other gens or regions, but that’s indicative of what people grow up with, different generations of fans even, have different experiences with each generation of Pokémon. I find that endearing thinking about everyone’s personal and unique experiences with such a renowned franchise. Sorry for the tangent, I-I got carried away, ehehe.

100% agree. Gen 5 was the last time I ever felt such excitement exploring a Pokemon world. The whole atmosphere of Unova was dark and edgy, and not in a stereotypical way. Some designs are forgettable, but I remember being just as intrigued with almost every single Pokemon. There was a theme going on. Sigilyph was found near yamask - what would later evolve into a mummy. Sigilyph alone was just abstract but when you look at him in the bigger picture, it makes sense.
Everyone says designs are bad. Like in this vid where you could literally describe “blue man on cloud” but that can be said for every single Pokemon. Charizard - a dragon. That’s it. Blastoise - tortoise with guns. Venusaur - lizard with plants growing on it. But with Pokemon (we’ll exclude the more recent games) there was a theme/concept with Pokemon and they had to be viewed together and with context. It was more than just looks but sadly people didn’t seem to get that.
I doubt I’ll ever get that same feeling than what I did in gen 5. Why can’t we just get a new Pokemon game with a whole new Pokédex and only at post game will we be able to venture further and find Pokemon from previous gens. *sigh*

This video is old and the sentiments I'm about to express may have been said before, but early on you criticized a few designs that are obviously based heavily on Japanese mythology and culture. Darumaka, for example, is based on the Japanese Daruma doll in its design and animations. Thundurus and Tornadus are based off the two shinto brother dieties Raijin and Fujin (see also: Mortal Kombat). I really encourage you to look up Raijin + Fujin and the Daruma doll because I think it'll clear up some confusion you seem to have with the design choices.
That being said, please don't take this as a defense of these designs because even though I like the cultural and historical context surrounding a guy like thundurus quite a bit, I don't think "blue man on cloud" is the best way to incorporate that into a Pokémon game

If you're playing through casually, it's really fun to use a Magic Guard Sigilyph with Cosmic Power. You max its defences, then get it to just blast everything with Psychic and Air Slash. It gets Cosmic Power at level 48, so it's a bit of a wait, but you can waste half the Elite Four with it. It gets even better when you find the Leftovers. Its ability also means that it's impervious to all damage except through direct attacks - and with those massively buffed defences, it's now basically a fast tank.

All the concept of the megas are amazing and the idea of your Pokémon evolve even further to get its maximum battle potential is incredible! I see all the Pokémon community begging to megas come back and to GF create new megas for the unfortunate Pokémon that doesn’t have one.
XY brought the series to 3D and every Pokémon was remodeled making Pokémon looks absolutely gorgeous!
XY brought many other features that are effectively used (different of pokestars studios that nobody gave a shit) like Poke Amie, Super training, Inverse Battles, Trainer customizations and they improve a lot the odds for Shiny Hunting making this type of gameplay more tangible for the first times in the série.
The Metagame in Gen 6 was the best one and most balanced one with the introduction of the Fairy type and along the Megas. Those innovations made the competitive scenario all new again and many player started to play it thanks to gen 6 games.
XY definitely is the best overall Pokémon gaming experience!
About the Kanto thing you said, I disagree! Kanto influences every generation after it! It is the most important and more love generation of all! Unova tried to ripp off Kanto being a lazy copy of it and fail miserably being hated in their released times and being the most controversial Gen until now....

Gen 5 brought the game to a more grown experience/Kanto inspired game. GF kept in mind how the kids of Gen 1 were all pretty much adults now, so that’s why the game has such themes. If you compare Gen 5-6 on their Kanto bait, 6 is way worse (do I even need to mention Charizard)

Can you still say they are lifeless? They created a new standard to Pokémon models. XY models will be used even in Pokémon Legends by what we have been seen in the trailers.
To tell the truth, Gen 5 sprites are the real fail! Too many Pokémon sprites from Gen 5 are recycled from Gen 4! They are bunch of broken pixel that explodes in every frame that the Pokémon have. The back of Pokémon sprites are just awfully done wit about 80% of them being a so trash that Is difficult to recognize the Pokémon over there. It hurts the eyes!
Gen 6 meta was the best to the competitive! It put the biggest number of Pokémon in OU category. Megas and Fairy type put many forgotten Pokémon in the spotlight again. Charizard, Venusaur, Lucario, Mawile, Magnetric, Aerodactyl, Gardevoir, Clefable and many other could be in the top percentage usage of Pokémon battling scenario after being put aside for some generations. Megas was a revolution in the Metagame being responsible for the boom of players in the competitive!
Gen 5 was a stepback in the franchise! I remember the blackish that Unova suffered in BW released time with many players dropping the series after the ripp off Dex! For the first time Pokémon suffered a blackish of the fans and many of them quit after the trash showed in Unova. It doesn’t surprise me that BW are the WORST SELLING games from the games core series which started a generation. To make bigger the fail, they are the worst selling in the biggest base console of all! There were more than 120 millions NDS in the market when BW was released and even that BW got the last place in sales of Pokémon games.
I don’t see Gen 6 doing a Kanto bait like Gen 5! Gen 5 tried to copy Kanto withou any shame! Gen 6 emphasizes every Pokémon of every generation and bring backs to the mainstream old Pokémon with the Mega evolution! In Kalos you can caught over 450 Pokémon of all old regions before you face E4! It is the opposite of Gen 5 that made you stuck with that disgusting Pokémon from Unova(🤢).
Charizard is for the longtime the most popular starter Pokémon. It just have one more form than it’s kanto partners! Charizard’s haters got mad because of that but they are just jealous because the fiery dragon outshines their favorite Pokémon in every aspect. Charizard it is one of the most important Pokémon to the franchise since day 1! GF recognize its appeal and put it in front of things because people worldwide automatically links Charizard image to the Pokémon franchise! It’s awesomeness, design and history made it get the treatment they deserve.

Aesthetic design of the creature are super subjective and imo shouldn't be brought up as a contentious point for a decision on a region. Gen 5 is special because of the brand new dex acting like a minor soft reset for the franchise to rope in a new generation, BUT this generation has more pokemon than Gen 1; so there should be at least 6 pokemon you like and will be happy to adventure with.

It’s supposed to be impossible to knock over, and he retracts his arms and legs, swings back and forth, which in my opinon isn’t «horrendously excecuted». Also, the argument is never completed, and gives it to the player instead. Also also, the more interesting villain was N, not Ghetsis, and N’s backstory was explained to some extent at the end of the game, and was fully explained in the post-game.

Just how if someone skips all the cutscenes of a game and miss out on the lore in it, that's their fault, not the game's. The position of the lore doesn't matter. If you miss it, you miss it, and that's a fault of your own, not the developer's. *Matter fact*, it's not even just Pokemon that uses intro cutscenes to establish what's going on in the game. LOADS of games have done it. There’s a throne, N gets crowned, Team Plasma looks like knights, their symbol is a shield, Ghetsis has funny tower wall things on his outfit, they _literally have a castle._
B2W2 somewhat helps the moral issues. N has no idea what to believe, and BW protagonist is missing due to heading out to look for N.

It's ironic. Everyone, myself included, loves gen 5 in retrospect even though you could technically say they were the first games that kicked off a number of trappings that later games have (linearity, shoving characters in your face often, no battle frontier or contests, long conversations, that sort of stuff.)
I think people love it now because something worse came after. Gen 5 honestly should still be considered the black sheep of the franchise for all the weird things it did.
However, i think what made people come around is how much the gen did on its own. Black and White 1 had a story built around one of pokemons primary controversies and left the door open for a sequel that actually did happen. Black and White 2 has so much actual content that for once felt like pokemon was on par with the present (for 2012)
Also I honestly like the gen 5 roster more than gen 1. I feel the opposite of you that I think the gen 5 pokemon have MORE personality.

    • @caldw615
      @caldw615 4 роки тому +34

Gen 5 felt more unique because all the Pokémon in the Unova dex were new so it had a similar appeal to playing through Gen 1 again. In other gens you pretty much always knew you'd encounter Zubats and Geodudes in caves or Magikarp when fishing but gen 5 had none of the old mons appear until post game. Some may have disliked it for this same reason if you couldn't take your favourite Pokémon with you from a previous gen but I honestly liked that every mon was new and it made the picks for my team a lot more important since I had no prior knowledge of who was reliable for defence, coverage, HM's etc
Excadrill became a big favourite of mine as a new addition as he helped my team out a lot because of his typing and crazy attack stat.

@@sebamg4391 What I mean is the way people reacted to gen 5. It's the "black sheep" for what many, even now, consider weird and out there pokemon designs; the map is a circle when previous regions had more twists in map design; the story was more involved than ever so you the player were strung along more often instead of letting you do things at your own pace; and even team plasma were blatant hypocrites using pokemon where their motif was "battles bad, liberation good."
On the surface, these would make gen 5 seem bad, but really, it's as well put together as every game before it. The story addressed the world itself, even the most popular RPGs often stop you with a text wall/cutscene, routes had optional areas and even full caves the story never mentions, and while the roster looks weird, to be honest, absurdity is the lifeblood of RPGs.
When I mean it should still be the black sheep, I mean the games after gen 5 should've been better, but instead got gradually worse with every passing installment. You become attached to things you initially hated when something worse comes along. The fact that gen 5 is so loved now is a byproduct of pokemons decline in quality.
Funny enough, I always loved gen 5 and never understood the hate, so seeing everyone come around almost feels like a one giant "I told you so" moment.

Go back and play the game now, and the story really is unfocused as this video claims. Gen 6 in a few years will get the same treatment 5 is getting now. I was around for the release of Gen 5 as a late teenager and definitely remember the negative reception to many aspects of this game. I cant say the same thing for the games I grew up with as a kid, because when you are a kid, you dont care as much, and any Pokemon game is generally amazing because the formula is that good. If they left it up to the player to decide who was right or wrong (maybe via fighting Ghetsis OR Alder in the last big fight of the game depending on the players choice, idk) I think it would have made this games story deeper and more complex, however maybe a bit hard to understand for the target audience. Couldn't disagree more. The pace of Gen 5 was better than Gen 4, music felt more upbeat, plot for a Pokémon game was better than usual, and I liked most of the new designs introduced. I will agree that having Pokémon not evolve until level 59 is stupid and the starters for Gen 5 don't look great. Past Gen 5 I didn't find much to like about Pokémon. X & Y were boring to me and Sun/Moon felt very linear despite the theme of exploring an island. Haven't even bothered with Sword/Shield because I doubt they would offer that same feeling of exploration that Gen 1-5 had.

I feel impartial to this video. 50/50.
I am glad that you aren’t spoon feeding the rhetoric with your video that this generation was utter garbage, because even you said so yourself, your cited views are mostly subjective and that’s true. It wasn’t a perfect game by any means either.
I actually loved gen 5 and it’s one of my favourites alongside the HGSS remake gen-4 dex adaptation. (Platnium is also up there but it’s also a slow game, it has its negatives)
The beginning of your video was very ineffective to your whole purpose of the video. Yeah shitting on weird and dumb designs is fine but in hindsight, doesn’t every generation have that issue? There will be good and bad Pokemon subjective and objective wise, in every game. It could have been structured better.
Your tangent about the designs which, of course there is a good chunk of the crowd which actually would, (including me), agree with you on some fronts. Especially Siglyph. Dear god. I had to agree.
However a lot of your comments are sort of ejecting this POV which shows to me that, you didn’t, *really* pay attention while playing the game. N’s past? There’s. A shit ton of hints and lore drops within the story, hell. The VERY FIRST cutscene you see in the game is when you boot up the game for the first time and let it play. You get flashbacks to N‘s past and crowning, with the Seven Sages included.
You DO get a conclusion with N’s story. He realises what he was following was a white lie and a mental veil collapsed over his moral judgement. He’s at a constant conflict with his bonds with Pokemon including the fact he somehow can communicate with them, speak to them, *understand them,* while Ghetsis used him as a scapegoat symbol to run Team Plasma.
Team Plasma (although I will agree with you to SOME EXTENT, that the moral spoon feeding of them being strictly seen as the bad guys), was... still portrayed as the villains very well, in my opinion. They’re literally the PETA of the Pokemon universe if you take a second to think. They’re the ones causing what and if not MORE of what they claim that they’re trying to free Pokemon from; liberate and save Pokemon.
THAT is why they were painted as the villains, because they were doing the exact same thing they claim to fight against, if not WORSE, than what they claimed the average day trainer is guilty for.
For the record, the majority of fan base seems to really love the musical score in this generation. I also love it too. It’s not my favorite set of music in a game of Pokemon of course but... yeah, those are mostly my main arguments and critique to your video. Good job at it though! Definitely think it was a very short sighted scope you were looking through in some parts.

    • @nathanwalker6284
      @nathanwalker6284 3 роки тому +9

Really i think the biggest missed opportunity with Plasma was, if nothing else keeping some kind of aura of suspense when it came to their ethics. Because when you first see them they're sort of this weird cult making a strange yet professional and PEACEFUL demonstration.
...Then within an hour of gameplay, We see YEP these guys are evil and morally bankrupt. The ideas are interesting, the outfits are neat, the theme is cool but even within the game itself, ignoring marketing that WILL tell you they're the bad guys... the story's narrative takes no time to try and pretend who they really are.
You could say the game is very BLACK AND WHITE about it...

One of the problems with Black & White is that the early game is loaded with repeated Pokémon at the beginning. It feels like you face the same mons, i.e. Patrat, Lillipup, Monkey Trio, Pidove, Purrloin etc over and over again. You may say that gen 1 did this, but I felt that gen 1 threw in some variety, such as Brock with Onix and Geodude and Misty with Staryu and Starmie versus the restaurant trio with Lillipup and a Monkey and then Lenora with Herdier and Watchog. And then, you Viridian forest and Mt. Moon to add different mons to add to the common mons of Pidgey and Rattata along with the different mon in route 22. You don't really get other mons until Pinwheel forest, and it feels like a slow trickle at best. The game developers really shouldn't have held a lot of Pokémon with high levels. I guess they felt that keeping people engaged for a postgame after a generation that had Platinum (the ultimate Pokémon game) and the gen II remakes that have a second region.
The game is arguably paced the best even with the tedium of facing the same mons the early game. Though, that's mainly because it has to stick to a script. The later games fall into this pacing too (haven't played B2W2 + Ultra Sun/Moon), but they have sections that feel long and short throughout.

Just binged your Pokemon trilogy and here are some thoughts about them overall:
I found your Sun/Moon review somewhat fetching. While I find more objective criticisms to be a better hallmark on reviewed items, I think your blend of humor and subjective criticisms welcome, especially considering this was how I was introduced to your channel. You have a lot of good reasons that were often not explored to a fully detailed degree (i.e. HM changes and Alolan forms among others) and it left me hanging a little, but the fact that you brought up these arguments as well as ones not normally explored in reviews was considerably fine. As I don't think I'll be able to find that 100% objective review of Pokemon games, I did find your take on Sun/Moon closer to a fair judgment (as opposed to other reviews).
Your X/Y retrospective was an interesting view. While I found the humor to be staggered in the first half, I think you found better ground in the second half (with less humor) being that there was structure and a clear thesis. That X/Y are better games looking back after Sun/Moon grounded your overall criticism and while I believe the positives were explored more and a bit more subjective compared to how you viewed the negatives of X/Y, the structure of your video was well crafted overall. (You do say "feels like an adventure" a lot in that video... not a criticism but it helps not to be repetitive)
This Black/White review suffers from the structure you laid out in your previous reviews. Mentioning you had no clear structure for this video kind of saves you but those words are taken back when you also mention your previous videos need be seen to better fully understand concepts in this video. And after finishing the review, you do mention your "thesis(?)" at the end. The first part, criticizing design and story from a subjective viewpoint, is not the strong foundation you normally set with your previous Pokemon reviews. You seem well acknowledged of this, and I commend you for sticking to that. However, the first half of this video have only been subjective arguments. I think the line you say about respecting these games comes closer to any sort of objective criticism, and that I appreciate. It sounds like you were a victim of hype with these games, which is a shame, but I understand how that bogs down anything. But at the end of the day, my intrigue for this video is bogged down by a weak/lack of structure and heavy focus on subjective arguments.
That being said, I respect your videos for the most part. As i wish you had more time to write a review for Black/White, I look forward to watching your other content. I hope this channel continues to grow and hopefully you set a strong precedent for yourself apart from other UA-camrs who simply talk about opinions, which is "okay" but isn't universal (and thereby strong). I like your cheeky attitude and I await to see you blend it with constructive writing in future videos. If I may suggest a channel, implantgames, he reviews games on an objective level. His writing structure and thesis layout have been refreshing, and he separates opinion from subjective material quite well. Anyway, I hope you have a nice day.

For me, Black and White was just something kinda special that I never really had from a pokemon game before. So many tracks in the game just bring me this nostalgia like no other pokemon game really did. My first game was Silver, handed down from my uncle and I very much love Silver. Though, Black just had this very odd thing to me. Everyone I knew at the time went for White just because they thought Zekrom was cool looking and what not and called me weird for liking Reshiram. It almost swayed me from getting Black over White, but I chose Black anyway just because I felt like I should of picked what I believed in. Not even knowing the story of the game beforehand, that really sent me for a loop as the whole game was about Truth vs Ideals. I replayed it about a year ago and did realized just how romanticized I had made it thinking it was this absolute master of creation. Though, I couldnt help just feel all giddy with almost everything. Nothing will ever top the feeling of sitting at my Karate sleepover with 6 of my friends in our own training mat forts all using the weird walkie talkie system as we watched a movie, suddenly bursting out into trash talk and throwing down on each other. Or how Black and White was my first competitive experience with Pokemon itself, with me reaching that peak early oras, late XY era. Black and White will always be the game I remember the most clearly, as I would get kinda upset with them saying the Pokemon would like it more being free. I even came up with the whole rationale of Police Dogs and how while they do enjoy work less than being free, they enjoy being with their masters more than anything.

As someone whose favourite gen is gen 5, this video was refreshing. It was nice to hear an honest, mature opinion on why gen 5 was bad. The people I know personally who don't like gen 5 are convinced that it was the 'worst one', and cite Trubbish and Vanillite almost exclusively. That being said, you admitted in this video that this is all your opinion, and are willing to say what BW did well. While I still really like Unova, I understand your reasoning for why you personally didn't like it, and you even pointed out some faults I didn't even notice (such as N saying he's king).
That being said, just as you claim there's several small little things about gen 5 that make you not like it, there's a bunch of small things about gen 5 that make me like it so much. My first one would be N's text's speed. In the first scene with N, Cheren comments on how fast he talks. Well, his dialogue actually DOES move faster than anyone else's. If you have the text speed set to slow or medium, his moves at fast, and if you have it set to fast, his moves at a 4th, otherwise-unreachable speed that's a step up from fast. Most don't notice it (I didn't on my first playthrough), but it shows that GF were paying attention to detail with this game.
Continuing with N, his full name Natural Harmonia Gropius, is, if I'm not mistaken, a name for the major scale (correct me if I'm wrong music whizzes). Ghetsis' Japanese name, meanwhile, is G-cis, a name for the tritone. For those of you without musical knowledge, the major scale is a very pretty, majestic, heroic-sounding scale, while the tritone is an ugly, demented-sounding interval. I believe the tritone is used in alarms and sirens, if that helps you imagine it. On top of that, Ghetsis' battle theme consists almost entirely of tritones. I'm sure there's instances of this elsewhere in Pokemon, such as how the admins of Team Galactic seem to have an outer space theme going on with their names, but this was the one for me personally that I learned about and thought was really cool and awesome.
I realize I'm going on about N a little bit. I swear this is my last point about him. You say N is enigmatic and hard to understand. I see why you don't like that. However, with that and the thing I mentioned earlier about his fast talking, as well as other details such as his upbringing and the fact that he has a void cube on him at all times, he gives me awkward introvert vibes. Hell, I even thought this when I first played Black as a kid, because of how he starts his first conversation with the player by saying their Pokemon was speaking. Now, that being said, I was the one who was considered the 'weird kid' by my classmates during school, and so it's nice to see someone who fits that stereotype get recognized as a hero by a Legendary Pokemon, instead of becoming a scientist or some misanthrope who wants to 'exact revenge' or whatever.
There's more little tidbits about N and Ghetsis that I really like, but I won't go over them because there's other stuff about gen 5 that I really like. I think Alder's neat because of his outlook and his backstory of having lost his partner Pokemon, a feeling that I'm sure those of us who've lost treasured game copies before can relate to. Cheren, as you have explained, is pretty damn awesome. I like how different Opelucid City is between Black and White, to relate to what Reshiram and Zekrom stand for (the same can be said for Route 4, as well as Black City/White Forest). This was the first gen where TMs were reusable. Ghetsis is left-handed, his right hand is only ever revealed during the crowning scene with N, and even then, it's shadowed. Reshiram and Zekrom had the same amount of weaknesses until Fairy was introduced. B2W2 are actual sequels, rather than remakes. I really like the shtick Lacunosa town has going on, though admittedly it's expanded on a lot more in B2W2. The list goes on.
So, seeing as this is all opinion, I understand and reiterate that I see your point of view and am not trying to 'convert' you or any nonsense like that. I just want you to understand why I personally like gen 5 more than any other. Do I think it's objectively the best? No. But I do really like it, nonetheless. And as N says, it's by accepting different ideas that we create positive change, not by rejecting them.

Regarding their design, they're based on Asura statues and some kamis, which is a pretty japanese thing that doesn't make much sense if you don't know about it. The Legendary Musketeers' theme is much easier to grasp.

DeKu Skrub the problem is that all 3 have more or less the same design in their Incarnate form. Over time I’ve warned up to them a little more, I do like the more subtle differences and their Therian form designs, but the absolute sameness of them was totally jarring and unexciting when I first saw them, especially for legendaries. I also think it’s fair to let Gen I off the hook a little bit because it was the first one after all, much before Pokemon has a solidified identity and design direction. Some of those were designed as pixel art before they were ever drawn out by Sugimori so it’s not exactly a fair comparison.

I'll say what I said in another comment. Yes, the inspiration for the designs of Gen I are bland, but the designs work because they look like classic designs and still look good. The problem with Gen V is, yes, there is lore behind the Pokemon, but design wise most of them look unappealing. That's not to say I don't like the designs, but a majority of people don't like the designs, and if a majority of people don't like them, then the general consensus will be that most of the designs don't look good.

"is this backstory even explained ingame" yes, but parts of it in intro (no matter how much one discards it because "well most would just skip it", a budget went into that thing so it is counted as a part of the game that can explain story points through visual telling) and postgame and other parts (namely Ghetsis taking him in) expanded by the sequels.
N probably also said king instead of leader because he doesn't exactly have the most control over what they do or don't, since they're pulled away by Ghetsis (and co.) most of the time so N really just exists to hold the position. Granted he should've just stated he was high ranked in it and leave it at that but ehh technicalities plus he was kind of crowned so of course he'd use the actual term instead.
By the point you get to the end of the series and you face N at the castle, I don't think you're in a position to exactly remember that "oh yea what about this totally evil looking dude", so the fact Ghetsis shows up at all is surprising because all the other villains are the only ones showing up at the end, so you expect to be done after clash of the legendaries (and… the other members of your and N's teams… I guess lol).
Also N isn't the only member of Team Plasma who may still believe that Pokemon should be free. However the others are mainly nameless grunts and this is only established within the sequels, but it's kind of obvious this kind of organization would have a self-divide in the first place because so many of the grunts seem attached to their ideal instead of being complete idiots that serve as filler, again since none of them knew about Ghetsis's true intentions. A lot of BW's story flaws like that are addressed within the sequels like that as far as I know, and it is why I refer to gen 5 itself as having the best story, rather than BW alone. I'd also like to say that the endgame twist doesn't answer the question at all, because again N is left out as still having his mind set on this, and judging by the remaining genuine Plasma members in the sequel afterwards, it's more than likely he still believes in it but tries to answer it himself. So basically you're left with Ghetsis, a power-hungry villain that used a legit cause to his advantage, only for it to backfire on him because of N's and the protag's moral compasses leading the latter straight to Plasma HQ to ruin the plans (partially thanks to N's League interruption). As for the other characters telling you it's fine, I think they're just saying that to reassure themselves and their confidence, but are just so obviously as jumping the gun to an immediate conclusion that it's uncanny, which does still lead to ponder the question again in the long run, as the game didn't exactly intend to do so because Ghetsis was lying all along anyways and N who's supposed to be closer to the player in terms of pondering it, left to do exactly that afterwards and still doesn't answer it even when reappearing in the sequels.
As for "is there a point of view that has all the answers? Give it some thought." I think it's supposed to hint that not even Alder's sure, even when he himself is supposed to be the wisest character we know in the entire game. It's the sole line that says that and while he himself isn't pondering it (probably because he doesn't a point to), he's probably think to have people think about it, which is likely what gave an extra push for N to do so. I would say (T)Cheren is also still wondering about it but then again you can barely tell what anyone's thinking in this game (just like irl lol). The fact you analyze it like that kinda proves that you're giving in some thought even when it originally feels like you didn't and were just weirded out by taking it literally.
(I also get where you're coming from when it comes to not trusting the series with subtle storytelling, but I think gen 5's main games as a whole actively tried to do that, as it is the only time we see them go for an actually lesser straightforward plot and so it's easy to picture them trying to do one using all the ressources they can, rather than resorting to solely dialogue like previous games did)
I feel like the praise aren't exagerrating by calling it "the best", but I will not disagree it's kind of because all previous games had a very low standard when it comes to it, even gen 4. It's really only the "best" in that it was the only one where it felt like they tried to actually do something with it, rather than making it second to gameplay to the point where it feels cliché (looking at you gens 1, 2, 6 and 8). Frankly the fact that it brings up any moral compass unlike the others is what makes me more attached to it than even gen 4 (the one I started with). It's a game where they actively tried to put development effort and a lot of care in trying to get a message across, even if they weren't the best at it (because again they don't exactly have much writing experience considering all the past villains have mostly been clichéd up to this point), and I think it's something to definitely at least respect, because it wasn't something we were going to get out of Pokémon any time soon, especially with the negative feedback it got from people who were afraid of the shift. It's clear it was made with a lot of heart and just lacked experience. It had the focus and will to put it in the spotlight to make something actually new and interesting, but lacked experience in that regard.
You're right on the nose about the designs: they do take from the same concepts as known gen 1 ones, however it's more of a necessity to keep all the basics down pat so the focus on only the new Pokemon doesn't throw off TOO many people from a gameplay perspective. They're more contemporaries to gen 1's than they are trying to sell you off nostalgia of it. They're similar but different, similar so you can still recognize the basics of Pokemon, but different to actually make it a fresh experience which was the main point of the first games.
(I will disagree strongly on the XY plot, AND the excuse that they had to 3D model all the Pokémons since it was actually not up to Game Freak there as it was handled by Creatures, because I feel there was NOTHING memorable about it but that's a topic for the XY video that I will probably never see because my disdain for XY is gigantic)
I will admit Unova's map design is a bit odd and unnatural, but I think most of the memorable locations being cities kind of ties in pretty nicely with the US where outsiders only think of cities and towns when they think about it, which would also explain the unnatural shape of the routes because it feels like the way they're connected together is more artificial than natural, like it was built or arranged by the local people to make them possible to traverse in the first place, which would make sense with how it seems more generally advanced than regions like Kanto.
tl;dr I feel like the reception to BW was more what shaped latter games to be such drops in quality than BW itself did. A lot of people I've seen back then were afraid of the story and pokedex shifts and trashtalked the games, both before and even after playing them because of, like you said, the execution turning them off. However these games combined all the elements necessary for a great game and were pretty much the only ones to actually do that, and I feel it would've been a much better new starting point if people weren't so aggressive about it. I understand a lot of your issues with it are mainly subjective and opinion-based, so I'm not exactly the most mad I am about it (despite how much I typed in this very comment, I'm just dedicated lol). I even agree that some of the writing could've been better no matter how much I feel this game's story at least tried to do right (which's more than I can say any other mainline Pokemon story did). But with how it did what it did, it feels like the only mainline Pokémon games I can actually go back to remember when a series I used to love went a way I thought would've been amazing for the series in the long run. And this says a lot coming from someone who usually sticks to the spinoffs at best (though I'll admit PokéPark 2 warmed up to most of gen 5's Pokemon pretty nicely so I can't speak on designs without being biased). Gen 5 to me had the best recipe for Pokémon, and its feedback being so negative solely because of execution alone, gave the developpers the wrong idea and made them go back to the annoyingly safe and bland formula that it feels like everyone loves as soon as they exclude the very obvious gen 1 pandering, and frankly knowing this is what hurted me to the point where I flatout declared to not want anything to do with modern Pokémon, and my new end goal to make sure gen 5 is remembered as being the one time Pokémon felt like it was genuinely trying to improve and put love and care into their main products. I don't agree with a lot of the opinions of it on here, but I do know and understand that they're very subjective and are more due to the overall execution being lacking (which can be explained by it being the first, and so far only, time they tried to. Seriously, lacking execution in writing or coding a specific aspect is just as much due to lack of prior experience than the transition to full 3D taking an hefty amount of time thanks to having to do so many models in the first place. If not more. So if anything XY as a whole is less excusable than subjective flaws within BW, as far as I'm concerned).
tl;dr again: BW's reception shaped the downfall, otherwise BW would've been the breadcrumbs of an actual golden era (if people overlooked the admittedly faulty execution back then to praise what it tried to do back in the time… like they are now that neither Game Freak nor Nintendo seem to care anymore).

I personally really like the twist at the end with Ghetsis. I think part of the intrigue of the story was the subtle difference between the two parts of Team Plasma, which were highlighted in the sequels. There is the group that was loyal to N and genuinely believes what they are doing is for the good of the world. And then there is those that side with Ghetsis , who use their moral platform to disguise their immoral acts.

The reason why N is the "king of team plasma" is because they are a team that is attempting to liberate pokemon, the equivalent of that world to weapons, putting a world in an older time, a MEDIEVAL time. The reason why a Monarchy is used in the team is because most of team plasma does in fact feel that desire to liberate pokemon, not just steal them away for power (hence why in Black and White 2 the old team plasma is still wearing their medieval clothes while Neo-Plasma is using regular thief like clothes) and by having a King to rule them, then there would be less conflict than if there was no king to begin with. By having N be the king Ghetsis could also rule by being the king's "advisor" while actually manipulating him in order to mantain power over the region without being attacked directly. N is a likable guy who'se role is to confuse you by being the one guy who actually makes you wonder about the situation presented by team plasma and by being a truly decent rival that you connect with (he does not share your opinion but he is respectful of it and was sadly just being used by a greedy man that wanted world domination). After the realization that he was being manipulated N disappears in a personal journey to understand if what he believes is in fact good or not.

I was ready to give a dislike until right at the end you adressed the main point about your whole commentary that was irking me: that the vast majority of your criticism is subjective. The only point I'm going to give you as objective is that spoonfeeding the answer to the moral debate undermines the message, but it still does not take away from the rest of the writing, and I think the presentation and dialogue is still superb and one of the game's strong points. Well, that, and maybe the fact that the late evolutions effectively lock some of the fully evolved forms until the postgame.
I still think that this game has fantastic artstyle, the music is phenomenal, and is the fastest in gameplay out of every gen, which was a blessing after the atrociously slow gameplay of Gen4 (ESPECIALLY Diamond and Pearl, thank god they adressed it with platinum and the gen2 remakes, and they were still slow as molasses). The region has a consistent America theme, and I think works very well because it feels like a cohesive region, as opossed to Kalos shoving every possible videogame trope at once (which you mentioned as criticism in your X/Y video by the way), such as having meadows on the route next to an Ice cold part of the region, right next to each other.
And while iI'll say all of that is subjective of me, so is your point of not liking stuff that was essentially redone in Gen 6, like when you criticize Castelia for being hard to navigate, yet praise Lumiose city in the X/Y video.
On the one hand, I thought "ok, so all his points boil down to the fact that he doen't like the music, the designs and the region. Was a 30+ minute video necessary for basically saying me no like game?". But on the other, the fact that you directly adressed that most of your criticism is esentially subjective, made me appreciate the rest of the essay. That saved you from the dislike, particularly because whenever I see the phrase "I wish I could like this / I was ready to like this but" online, it is usually thrown around as a backhanded insult, tipically meaning "I wish I wasn't much more cultured than you and I didn't see these glaring flaws that I cannot possibly look past". I still think the Gen 5 games are awesome.
And I also think that you are unthinkably wrong and should have your Pokémon fan license taken away immediately and never talk about Pokémon ever again and I couldn't possibly be saying this sarcastically or agree to disagree, no sir, I don't.

I recognize sun and moon had alot wrong with it but it did alot of cool things to the series and even introduced cool things like regional variant pokemon and gor rid of HMS. sword and shield do nothing to improve on it and only piggyback off of sun and moon improvements. Team Plasma is not a country, we (I, the gamer) are unfamiliar with how a King would rule over a Team of People. Are people born into Team Plasma? Why is N the King when he was found as an orphan? If N died who would rule in his stead?
If N was say the King of Unova, and we had seen Princes and Dukes as the Mayors of the towns in the game, It would give some weight to the concept of a King.
In the game N is the "king" of a team of people. Why not just call him the President? Or the Leader, boss? I get that Team Plasma is based on Medieval ideas, but the concept is half baked. Would make way more sense if Team Plasma were part of the society and N was the known ruler. The map is shaped like a circle because NYC which B+W is based on is a giant circle with the five boroughs and new Jersey basically surrounding it. It’s incredibly well researched as someone from the city.

I hate people acting like pokemon designs are a reason to dislike gen 5 when there are bad pokemon designs in all games, you cant tell me grimer and muk are good pokemon designs if you are telling my trubbish is bad. And it had so many good pokemon designs that everyone just seems to ignore when they are making that point, braviery, serperior, chandalure, haxorus, excadrill do I need to go on.

Also some of your design critiques I didn't get. Like, calling Darumaka a used tampon?? Have you ever seen a used tampon? He looks like a hot coal if anything, like he's somewhat supposed to!
Some designs are pretty bad tho like with any gen. In gen one there was a pile of goop, a bigger pile of goop, a pokeball, an upsidedown pokeball, etc. In this one we have men in clouds, Cryoganol, etc. It all comes down to taste though because I still love 90% of the pokemon designs in Gen 5! Not sure why, I just do.

At least was more than "Become the champion because 'wynaut', while defeating a pure evil/stupid team". This time they gave you motivations for going to the elite 4 (If you don't N and Ghetsis will rule Unova and you'll be no longer able to be friend with your pokemon), and team plasma isn't pure evil, but rather has bad and good members.
I can see the problems with gen 5, but he is just so absurd in his critique, like hating Castelia city for being too easy to get lost but loving Lumiose city which is even worse, or praising gen 1 designs while saying gen 5 designs are disgusting.

Fernando Vasquez yes there intentions they think are to free Pokémon so there is an actual opinion in them unlike the mindless team skull who are just gangsters. Also he said his critique was his opinion so I’m ok with it. Casteliea city was one of the best in the Pokémon’s Series it captures New York pretty well. I’d rather Pokémon be a pixel game rather than a 3D one and that’s why I don’t like the newer versions as much
