    Will one of you FDNY guys talk about why hard suction is used to connect to the hydrant?

    • @wesmeziere9349
      @wesmeziere9349 5 років тому +2

      When a water supply system become taxed, the flow pressure from hydrants on that supply grid will decrease. When the flow pressure from hydrants on the taxes grid dips, soft suction or soft supply hose connected to hydrants will collapse. Hard suction prevents collapse of supply hose due to decreased flow pressure from an over taxed water grid.

      Ok thanks. I was always taught never to go under 10 psi residual but I guess if you have an overtaxed system then that could be pretty common. It’s almost like it becomes a drafting from a hydrant situation. That’s life in the big city! Lol!

    I live in Europe i would say usa putting firelines like in midleages. Why they dont roll them????its so slow its hard to even watch. Here in eu even in russia you can place kilometers of line in seconds. You just frow the roll and it makes line itself, when job done you take wrench type tool and make rolll again after fire

    Looks like you wanted to jump on at beginning. Just asking why do NYFD have a blue flasher on rear of rigs.????

    • @nightfury8440
      @nightfury8440 4 роки тому

      FDNY has blue on the back because in New York State that is the only where it is legal to have blue on fire apparatus. Blue and Red and White is typically seen as the best lighting combination (at least where I live) because it offers the best of bright white lighting, the distinctiveness of red, and the visibility of blue. Amber is used on the rear as it is also very eye-catching. Note in America there is little standardization in firefighting. Many places have traditions such as Chicago's FD using green on the right side of their rigs or DCFD using blue on rescues and green on ladders or California's steady burning red light law.

      Thank you so much for info
      Back when I was really young my parents took me to go see Alice s Restaurant ( the movie)
      and I say a New York state PD car with a 174 federal roof becon it was BLUE me being a small child was shocked at the time only over sea's ( British ) PD where the only one I knew had blue. Around my hometown all PD had the early NYPD type becons. CLEAR dooms with red and clear. Then the state Law changed and boy if any other EMERGENCY piece of equipment thought about having blue let's just say the LAW writing by my state was very very clear no 1 and I mean no 1 could have Blue. My state has a very powerful PD lobby in state capital and what PD says PD gets. Anyway no fire no Ambulance no support ( chief's ) cars could have BLUE we did start using a GREEN small flasher on command vehicles to I D the command ( Chiefs ) location on large lots of equipment at scene to show Commands location. I was in Lost wages ( Las Vegas ) and asked a fire crew what the BLUE light was for on there FD Engine and thay just looked at me and laughed did not answer my ????
      To make a long story short I always thought that BLUE was only for PD. Again Thank you for explaining.

      Just throwing it out there...There are federal standards, but they aren't required, just guidelines. Some states follow them to the T, others do not. Georgia (per Fed I think) LEO blue and/or white only, Fire red and/or white only, EMS any combo of red, white, and blue...and more. The Fed standard is an orange strip al the way around ambulances, I think 12" tall. Construction, Amber or amber/blue lights. Incident command, green light. There are probably more that I have forgot, it's been several (18+?) years. Oh, purple light or flags, funeral.
      Green light in canada...Doctor. But they don't get the ROW, nor can they speed.
