- I can’t believe it, but it’s finally here oh god! I’m very sorry that the animation can look rough from time to time. I started this animatic back in January 2024 or December 2023, and finished it yesterday. The art style can jump and change drastically!!
First, I decided that I wanted to do a full AMV animatic, but then I’ve shown myself some mercy and allowed myself for it to be imperfect, because I have others thing in life, more important than animation.
I have a lot of feelings towards this project. Whenever I see any segment of it, I remember my exact thoughts while working on it. It’s like watching a person or a plant grow-a beautiful feeling!
Honestly, I don’t know what I’ve done with the lore. In the begging I wanted it to be a happy AU animatic where Maple is taking care of kids every full moon or so, but then i watched Hannibal and Good omens, and decided for it to have a twisted turn.
There are some Bible elements here (“Saint”, halos, holy trinity…), so Mapleshade is like a fallen angel here. She was supposed to become a Saint, but while she was still alive, decided to not do such thing.
She created sort of a cult??? I don’t know. For herself????? For other kittens to worship her????Because she felt unbelievable guilt for “killing” her own children??????? DON’T ASK ME!!!! Also, she repainted the old cave arts of herself, to change the story for her own benefits. There’s a lot to say about this animatic, but I’d love for you to watch it and give your own explanation for the story:]

Story:
The animatic begins with Mapleshade. She’s running through the real world, anticipating with it. We see Bluepaw, waking up due to outside voice. She sneaks out of the camp, and meets Saint Maple. We see a flashback of Moonflower’s death, and how it affected Bluepaw. Saint Maple comforts her, and Bluepaw builds an emotional connection with her. She sees that Saint Maple is a Starclan warrior, and after that she wakes up, realising it was all a dream. She seems impressed and astonished that a Starclan warrior visited her! Cut out to the young four leaders. They’ve secretly met, and now are searching for Saint Maple (they all had the same dream as Bluepaw). Brokenpaw gets lost in the way, and Saint Maple comes his way, offering food. He’s afraid of her looks, but still proceeds to accept the offer, because he was hungry. Saint Maple comforts him too, and now Brokenpaw feels respect and admiration for her. Saint Maple playfully escapes, but the young four eventually finds her, and they’re running with her, sincerely joyful.
A sequence of moments:
Patchkit’s death
Mapleshade’s guilt (she feels like she killed them)
Mapleshade comforting Bluepaw after a fight, while her tail fluidly flows into the river with her kittens.
One of the Riverclan kittens discovers ancient cave art, where we can see that Saint Maple never existed, and that she manipulates kittens for her own sake. Maple has found him!
In the front animation, we see how Mapleshade played the role of the mother in every leader’s life, preparing them for a leadership. This process is quite as old as Mapleshade since she died: she started training the main four leaders generation after generation.
After that, we can see cave paintings about Saint Maple and her achievements, how she helped every kitten in every clan, no matter what, followed by changing generations, coming to see and worship her.
Flashback where Mapleshade grieves over her dead children, being angry at Starclan and eventually, killing Ravenwing, Frecklewish, Appledusk. Those three cats, now saints, aren’t angry, but they do feel pity for Mapleshade.
Mapleshade decides to do things her way. Symbol of a broken halo behind her-the path of blood and insanity she chose.
Cutout to Saint Maple observing Crookedjaw and Brambleberry going to the Moonstone. Crookedjaw looks, and recognizes her. He was the who discovered the true story behind Saint Maple. But, something terrible happened. He survived, but his jaw was snapped, and he was later found near the river by his clanmates, with severe memory loss. Crookedjaw is terrified, wondering why Starclan is not doing anything to stop Saint Maple. Brambleberry wonders the same question. She has mixed feelings about Crookedjaw. And so they gaze at the stars, but they gave no answer.

I love how we know why starclan doesn't stop her. Because she makes both good leaders. Which is ironic.
Like since she's died the only bad leader she's produced is brokenstar and we don't know exactly how she reacted to him after he became leader. I always imagined she hated him but knew better than to scorn a potential ally.

THIS IS SO UNDERRATED! THE STORY, THE ANIMATION, EVERYTHING! THE “SAINT MAPLE NEVER EXISTED” GAVE SUCH SHIVERS! JUST- AMAZING.

Wooow this amazing! Despite the lack of button eyes, it gives me Coraline vibes and one can see how much work you put into it. I love the smooth movements of the dripping water, the lip synch and swirling scenery. The idea of Maple being a dark entity who comforts little kittens over their losses until she is worshipped by them (but has questionable motives) was always something I imagined her to be. Also, your moon/night sky looks so realistic?? And the sequence at 0:57 is incredibly cool!

GODDD this is stunning. I love this AU and I love how innocent and young you made Bluepaw look.
And also this is just? Generally a work of art!?? Probably the best Mapleshade animation I’ve seen so far! It’s so expressive and sad. Also the ending? OUCH
+ one of my favorite parts of this animation is the beginning. I LOVE how big and imposing you’ve made the forest. A lot of people make the cats incredibly big compared to the trees so this was a breath of fresh air. And the scene where it shows how Mapleshade “made” all these cats leaders is SO GOOD! This animatic takes me back to old horror films in black and white
