Weird, I see them all the time in asian grocers in the west. Expensive at $4.99/lb. Breaking the hard shells is a huge PITA. Tried a batch once, not again. My opinion. Overrated.

Mangosteen is delicious. But, don't expect to grow it successfully outside of true tropical climates. Even in Central America, it is relegated to grow to fruit stage in certain microclimate.

Thank you for sharing your experience, wow, it takes so long to grow and bear fruits, no wonder it is so very expensive, i would rather look for the plant to buy so i don 't have to wait for 10-15 years for the fruits, because if it takes that long, i might die before i can eat my fruits from my tree!

Yes, it is too expensive to buy but if you go to Vietnam, you can eat them everyday because it is so cheap and so good, i think Summer is the season for mangosteen, and it goes all the way to Fall, when i visit my family 6 years ago, my sister bought this fruit for me to eat everyday, and it was sooooo good!Here in the USA, it cost about $6 lb., and 2 lbs. bag has about 9 fruits, so expensive!

Here in the uk the small ones are £2.50 each. For one. For one small one. That’s about $3.50. For a single small mangosteen and there’s not much in them.
I hope one day soon mangosteens will be sold in US with cheaper prices… good and healthy fruits but too expensive to enjoy.

PITA breaking the hard shells. IMO not the greatest fruit either. Overrated and overpriced in the west. Sweet and sour taste, a combo flavor of lychee, plum, and other soft asian fruits. I bought some after seeing Mark Wiens saying it was sooo good. Nope, not at all. I would say average and the hard shells make it annoying to eat. Mango is much better, point blank!
