Love is personified in the purest form through song and with such an elegant voice. We love and miss you Eva Cassidy, everyday. From your fans, all of the world that have followed you all these years, those feelings are forever.

"PENNY TO MY NAME" by Eva Cassidy was written by Roger Henderson from the Washington D.C. area. He was about to throw this song away when Chris Biondo got him to let Eva Cassidy record it in 1988. It quickly became Henderson's favorite song after hearing Eva sing it. She recorded the lead vocals and the background vocals; Henderson recorded two guitar tracks; Biondo played the bass and Dan Cassidy recorded the fiddle a few days later. This is the second project Eva worked on for Biondo's studio. It was put on Henderson's album (Replugged) with Eva's singing instead of Roger's. To me, this song has "#1 Folk song" written all over it.

Thank you for this. Roger Henderson is my uncle and it’s wonderful to see him acknowledged.

I didn’t know your uncle, but from my UA-cam vantage point, Roger Henderson was a “Picker” much in the vein of Chet Atkins. (High praise coming from any guitar player). He could play most styles of music, and his singing sounded like a cross between John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot. Plus, he wrote his own music. He was literally a One-Man-Band.
Another observation that many people would not know about is that, if Eva Cassidy’s guitar style on her solo songs could be compared to any of her local guitar playing influences, to me, it would be Roger Henderson’s finger picking style. RIP Roger Henderson and Eva Cassidy . . .

I'm sure she would've made an awesome cover of it if she really felt like singing it. She hardly would though.

I am, but should not be, surprised at how good she is at country music. Nightbird and Anniversary Song are hints at this. Her unassuming and humble personality also fits country music.
I am hoping over the years more videos or recording will turn up so we can expand her play list. There are notes she hits that just make you emotionally respond to whatever it is she is singing.

    • @erikeide5407
      @erikeide5407 7 років тому +2

She excelled at folk music, which is really similar to country, so this isn't surprising to me at all. Even though this has a little more twang than usual, I still consider this folk.

I can truly relate to this song, because I was born and raised in a very small town in the deep South. Countless times, throughout my childhood, I used to sit short distances from the only two-lane highway that passed through my tiny hometown. I would daydream, endlessly, as I sat there (for different lengths of time) and watched out-of-state eighteen-wheelers and automobiles (with tourist inside) either traveling southward to big cities like Jacksonville and Miami or northward to big cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, Richmond, Washington DC, Philadelphia or New York City. In comparison to my boring small town country life, I'd often wonder what day-to-day living was like a large city. I would even, at times, close my eyes and imagine that I was walking down city streets during the day and, especially, at night with all the bright lights, tall buildings, noisy heavy traffic and swarms of people moving about; in and out of theaters, restaurants, clubs and hotels, etc. 'Mentally', during my entire childhood, I ran away from home at least one thousand times. I never felt like I belonged in that small town, at all. My body was there, but my mind was almost always far, far away. When I finally became a teenager, I 'physically' left my small hometown, to live in different major cities, and didn't return home for decades. I miss my hometown about as much as you would miss the excruciating and throbbing pain of an aching tooth. Now that my parents have passed away, I have no reason to ever return there.

I was in the shower last night trying like crazy to remember this song! Thank goodness Google only needed a few words. As far as the city lights, they didn’t shine too bright. I’m not sure what state Eva was referring to but oh how I wish I was looking at my dumb old mountain in WV.😕Hazel Dickens’ “West Virginia my Home” reflects on “I don’t remember why I left so free, what I wanted to do, what I wanted to see...” The grass is always greener & don’t know what ya got til it’s gone.🦌🌳🍁🍂

Bill and I got married following our first born
Daddy left this gas & convenience store just before he died
And I was only nineteen when I had my third baby
And sometimes I think maybe I should've left here long ago
Travellers are stopping by, check their oil and their p.s.i.
Gas up and away to fly, moving down the line
But this beat-up truck & worn out shoes always give me the blues
Billy sucking down the booze nearly every night
    [Chorus]
I never seen the city lights
How they must shine so bright
    Not like this country night
    The sky's black as coal
    And this gas-station mountain home
Not a thing to call my own
How I wish I was alone
With a penny to my name
Strangers say this mountain here is beautiful beyond compare
But it's just a dumb old mountain; I see it every day
If I could see sunset skies over fields of green or ocean-tides,
City skyline in the night, I'll be dancing till the dawn
    [Chorus]
Bill and I got married following our first born
Daddy left this gas & convenience store just before he died
Maybe Bill & I someday will find a chance to get away
Until then it's here I'll stay wishing on a star
    [Chorus]
