Pretty much the biggest symptom of a show running its course, is it having to cycle back on so much stuff that people loved about it in the first place.
Not to mention basically two sequels to "SB-129" with "PL-1413" being the future and "Hysterical History" being the past. And I thought "Bubble Buddy" having two sequel episodes was already enough ("Bubble Buddy Returns" and "Bubbletown").

Part of the charm in older SpongeBob was taking simple plot points like Delivering Pizza, Playing Music, or Selling Chocolate Bars, and adding a bunch of great jokes to make said plots feel like something much bigger.

Seeing all these older references in newer seasons gives me tonal whiplash. It’s like that one kid in class who tries to be a class clown by saying variations of one joke they said earlier. Whereas SpongeBob has always been a show about moving onto new things in its comedy. Even the Dark Ages (Season 6-8) experimented a little even if it was all garbage
I just watched season 5,6 and 7 recently and compared to modern spongebob they aren't even that bad, especially season 5 and 6. I think people just never rewatched those seasons after watching season 12/13/14 and just remember off their back of their heads that those "dark age" seasons where classified as horrible back then, but those modern seasons are 100 times worse.

That, sadly, may be the reason it's just an ouroboros of crap, at this point: Everyone loves early Spongebob being weird, the middle got too weird, and now they're playing it safe by only really redoing what got praised, without understanding the reasons behind said praise.
That's why I consider seasons 1-9 the lore building seasons, with seasons 10-14 being the reference heavy seasons. Say what you will about the writing in seasons 6-8, but still plenty of original stories in those seasons. Okay, maybe not so much in season 7, seasons 6 and 8 for sure. Heck, some would say they even wasted these original plots on garbage writing. Stuff like "Porous Pockets," "The Card," "Shuffleboarding," "Toy Store of Doom," "Oral Report," and "Karen 2.0" have potential and they don't even sound like ScumBob episodes when I first heard about them or read the brief summary for them.
I wish Squlliam Fancyson returned as the museum worker or his ancestor the boss of the boat factory.

I thought about this and it makes sense. The writers hate squiliam because they hate squidward. Squil is the antagonist to protagonist Squidward, but because the writers hate squidward, they don't want him looking good by comparison.

There are plenty of people who are passionate about spongebob and have great ideas for new episodes, but Nick just keeps shoveling out episodes that have horrible dialog and recycled plotlines. It's clear the current writers are COOKED, but nick doesn't seem to care.
If they took ideas from the fans that'd create a lot of drama and everyone would say they're creatively bankrupt.

@Pablo.673 They definitely need to change something imo. It just seems like all their spongebob shows are in a creative rut. The first thing I would do if I were a Nick executive is lengthen the normal spongebob episode to 30 minutes instead of 15 minutes, so that more complex plots could be used in episodes.
@@ramstack2701 don't worry, it's already been confirmed there's gonna be changes soon. 2nd half of S14 is a lot more character-driven rather than gag-driven (this has been confirmed already, that Vince gave the order of taking that approach since pairing 308) and the new revealed plots sound way better than what the rest of S14 had to offer (you can check the season 14 page in Encyclopedia SpongeBobia if you wanna see what I'm talking about).

The idea was that, when Hillenburg created the character, was that there was an innocence to him, that he was always excited by the silliest of things. I don't think the newer writers are completely terrible, but it feels like they miss the point of how he is supposed to behave so they just resort to pandering when they're creatively lost.
Yeah, season 1 SpongeBob was just the right amount of naive but also not stupid. Season 9 SpongeBob would have never called out Plankton for trying to trick him

I remember watching that episode from season 10 where Squidward delivers paintings and he visits Rock Bottom briefly, I found that callback really cool at the time. Now I noticed the show has turned into just that. Only nostalgia bait as a crutch for bad writing, the writers have become too self aware and refuse to improve on anything.
At least "Food PBFFT! Truck" gave us some new locations in Rock Bottom finally.
The no touching thing just reminds me of the original Kevin episode joke with Patrick.
Of course, there, they somehow managed to make Patrick just saying “Touch!” funny. Here, they drag it into a major motive for Walker to be mad at them, which just feels generic and lazy.

At least the season 12 episode "Insecurity Guards" gave us the Bikini Bottom Museum of Everything with a creative design. But then it became less creative for The Patrick Star Show episode "Now Museum, Now You Don't" when the Upturn Museum of Upscale Art literally reuses the same exact design of the Bikini Bottom Museum of Everything, but with Upturn's face on the front and the sign changed. Some say Lady Upturn bought out the museum, but I call it laziness.

spongebob merchandise constantly references spongebob memes (such as the caveman spongebob picture at 2:38) even if they are years late. so seeing how the episodes now constantly call back to these memes, it makes me feel like they are trying to reel older viewers and internet addicted children in for views and money

I get it, SpongeBob is a kids show now. It always was, but back then the jokes were layered enough to where adults could be entertained. They don’t have those jokes in them anymore.
But the thing is, the old seasons weren’t only great for the jokes. They had great storytelling, interesting characters, fun plots, and were more grounded. Instead of throwing in annoying weird facial expressions every 30 seconds, and having these weird songs playing in the background that have been reused for 10 seasons now, just make a more grounded show and make better background music. Ambient, relaxing noise, grounded and realistic characters. Good jokes are just a bonus at this point.

I miss the early seasons when it was so calming and tropical and atmospheric and the humor was extremely subtle and hilarious and the funny faces were used sparingly so they stand out more, Now every face has to be a wacky over-the-top expression accompanied by an obnoxious Johnny Test whipcrack soundeffect and the music isn't pleasing to the ear, nor is the show pleasing to the eye, all of the senses it's unpleasant to, I've never seen a show that went from The Best to The Worst so immediately, There was never an episode of SpongeBob that was just okay or average, it went from consistent 5-star hit after hit for the first three seasons, they had a very Pixar-esque run, then after Hillenburg decided the story had come to a natural end but Nickelodeon said "fuck that" it's been consistently bad with not a single exception after all these years, even the brief period before Hillenburg's death where he reportedly "came back" to the show, which I doubt he had any actual control or involvement besides a condesceding pat on the back slash pickpocket from a millionaire executive.

This episodes makes the nuclear theory more plausible. The main flaw of this theory is that we see the characters way before nuclear bombs even existed. But now we see how an anchor suddenly apears in what is supposed to be prehistory. I think their prehistory is happening right after the nuclear tests and would explain the anchor. The reason they're so developed now when only 40-60 years passed is because maybe time is diffrent here. Think about how 1 human day is 7 dog days. Maybe something similar is happening here
I swear the modern writers actually don't know anything about Spongebob, Bikini Bottom or its characters.
Its a real shame when kids tv shows try to copy stories and themes from the original version of the show or earlier seasons rather then trying to do their own thing
Honestly idk why everyone is complaining about the nostalgia aspect, it's literally the ONLY thing I like and appreciate in modern spongebob.
I think bringing back old references is great, but its literally to a point where its the only thing that's being put into the episode. There is genuinely little to no effort put into the jokes, writing, or even the plot of the episode because apparently nostalgia makes up for all of that. I sure that's why a lot of people are complaining

season 3 episode 14, (ugh) is my favorite comfort episode.
It's sad to see this show in it's current state. I still wish this show had fresh ideas for episodes with world building, comedy, and character traits, and set pieces inspired by marine biology and the aquatic world. I can't watch any of this new stuff without getting bored halfway through and wishing I was watching older episodes or even just a different, now better show. People say Sonic the Hedgehog has a bit of a nostalgia problem too, but at least Sega is capable of coming up with new ideas (Sonic Superstars) while the Spongebob writers seem stuck recycling old material because they barely have the deadline to write basic plots randomly slapped together with pieces of the past and random BS. Like seriously... milking urchins? I could understand milking the venom from their spines to make an anti-venom, but why randomly slap in a poorly disguised cow... when actual sea cows like dugongs and manatees exist?
Seasons 6 through 9 may not be good at times, but at least they had unique ideas where Spongebob still felt like a dynamic character instead of treating him like an idiot for convenience sake.

You know what would succeed at nostalgia? An episode that actually aims to capture what SpongeBob used to be, the thing I am actually nostalgic for. And you don’t do that by pointing at older episodes going “remember this?” It’s lazy is what it is. If I wanted that, I’d go back and watch that episode.
