Queen Elizabeth II Gets Egged and Laughs it Off (1986) | Royal History

- On 24 February 1986, Queen Elizabeth II was pelted with eggs by demonstrators protesting in the name of Maori land rights while the monarch was visiting the New Zealand capital of Auckland. While the egging caused alarm for many (representing as it did a serious breach of the Queen's personal security), the Queen herself handled the experience in good humour. At a state banquet in Wellington, the Queen made a deadpan reference to the incident while praising New Zealand's dairy produce. It would take more than cracking yolks to stop the Queen cracking jokes.

No, I believe back then she was writing it herself. Remember State Visit to Canada. After Prime Minister emphasised how many PM’s she had met she said something along the lines; ‘Thank you Mr. Prime Minister of Canada for making me feel so old’. It was way funnier than this one, but it was her spontaneous reaction when she turned 88 or 89 (it was 2015) and sent the same sort of stare afterwards.
@@sorrygregory5653 I believe they may add in things to make the speech more relatable but I refuse to believe The Queen wrote that herself. I could be wrong but I’m holding on to hope 😂.

Btw, regardless of this speech I guess that plenty of public people of a global recognition have few personal assistants to help them keep it together. I also believe that sometimes they didn’t write a single word, just been given tips what to put there. Still, in her case I would believe she was preparing those speeches herself. Sure, had a panel of advisers, diplomats, historians but something tells me she had balls to give it her shapes, thoughts etc. and treated it seriously.

Though many do not realise it, her sense of humour was legendry. She was also a brilliant mimic.

There’s a few stories about her sense of humour. Like the crown prince of Saudi Arabia went to balmoral to see her. At the time women weren’t allowed to drive in Saudi. So the prince waited in the Land Rover thinking prince Phillip was going to drive. But the Queen got in and drove like a hooligan and scared him half to death. Or when Tony Blair visited and Prince Phillip told him to sit in Queen Victoria’s chair. The Queen walked in and told him off and said no one had sat in it since Queen Victoria. Tony Blair looked like he was about to start crying 😂.

She should of been a stand-up comedian. Really, the delivery, the timing, her cadence, she’s wonderful! Deliciously witty and so very sharp and quick-witted. Loved her delivery, reading off the piece of paper and mumbling.

Classy lady I’ve always had the utmost respect for her. She had some big shoes to fill at a relatively young age and did a fantastic job
as a Maori I'm ashamed this happened (at the time I was only 4) but boy oh boy am I glad I can say I lived during her reign.... absolutely loved her sense of humour... a true ROYAL LEGEND
I'm 50 now, and Northern Irish. I remember this VERY well, and am 100% sure this was an Irish Republican thing, not a Kiwi issue at all. I remember the news saying "What if they'd been throwing grenades?". It was a VERY serious breach of security in reality. Again, I'm definite it was kids if my fellow Paddies who threw this. Greetings to New Zealand by the way: I won't Riverdance you if you don't Haka me:)

It was very risky letting her travel standing in a open roof car. Imagine if someone had fired a gun at her.
She had good humour though. She also once retired that she prefers her eggs scrambled on another occasion a couple or so eggs were thrown at her.
