It’s been a decade since John Carpenter recorded the material that would become Lost Themes, his debut album of non-film music and the opening salvo in one of Hollywood’s great second acts. Those vibrant, synth-driven songs, made in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, kickstarted a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. In the years since, Carpenter, Carpenter, and Davies have released close to a dozen musical projects, including a growing library of studio albums and the scores for David Gordon Green’s trilogy of Halloween reboots. With Lost Themes IV: Noir, they’ve struck gold again, this time mining the rich history of the film noir genre for inspiration.
Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as “soundtracks for the movies in your mind.” On the fourth installment in the series, those movies are noirs. Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes these songs “noirish” is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone. The noir quality, then, is something you understand instinctively when you hear it. “Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs, which is not in old noir films,” Davies notes. “But somehow, it’s connected in an emotional way.”
The trio’s free-flowing chemistry means Lost Themes IV: Noir runs like a well-oiled machine-the 1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster from Kiss Me Deadly, perhaps, or the 1958 Plymouth Fury from John’s own Christine. It’s a chemistry that’s helped power one of the most productive stretches of John’s creative life, and Noir proves that it’s nowhere near done yielding brilliant results.
I'm so lucky to live in a time where John Carpenter is still making music.
fuck yes!
Totally agree!
I love listening to his music and have it on my playlist
Too true
Amen!
Damn, it would be so cool if John made another movie. Noir with own music and Kurt Russell
😏
Take my money
Big Trouble trying to Escape New York
Or
Escape from Little China
I don’t need Carpenter to make any more movies. He’s given us plenty, and we are so lucky to get to experience his career renaissance in music. We love you, John.
Excatly! My words! Go John! Go! 👌👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@michalslatina8004 I wouldn't mind if he scored a movie or two
@@Luke_Stoltenberg He did. Remake of Firestarter. 👍👌
He should make a noir or a western.
I think he'd be better off on consulting on video games.
Hes living the dream, still making music with his son. That must be an incredible feeling
Yes, the Dad dream. Now if he can only pull off the rescue your family from danger fantasy.
And the music is fucking FLAME ‼️
* his sonS (he raised Daniel like his own son).
I can't believe how long it took me to realize John Carpenter the director and the composer were the same person. How can someone be so freaking talented?? This song is such a mood!!
A lot like Danny Elfman🙆🏼♂️
A TRUE RENAISSANCE MAN
Literally just went through this lol.
I absolutely thought they were two separate people. Amazed.
Well, it's never too late to check all the soundtracks he did for his own movies...
Ok, I'm just waking up to this too. I don't know the actress in this but she just absolutely has to be French?
Imagine Snake Plissken walking down a dark street ready for the final battle
I'd love crossover movie Snake Plissken and MadMax- Escape from the Wastelands.
So awesome
Ohhh yeah....
@@lv2465That sounds fucking tight!
Right on point. 👍👍🐍
Wish a studio would give John a proper budget and creative freedom to give us one last movie!
Same, but I assume he’s just happy making tunes.
Let him rest in retirement he contributed to the film 🎥 as a body of work I am enjoying his musical performances.
You had it.... I even saw it in the theater... it was called the ward and it was awful.
He doesn’t want to make films anymore. He’s said he can’t do it well enough anymore. He just wants to chill and get high now.
The Thing is getting re told by Carpenter... :)
Thank you for everything, Mr. Carpenter.
Is this THE John Carpenter? I knew he did music but damn this is good
Yep! THE John Carpenter. It's the single for his next "Lost Themes" album.
Unmistakably
And Daniel Davies is his godson, who is the son of Kinks guitarist Dave Davies
Oblivion Rules🤯
This is the John Carpenter channel bro, lol. Subscribe!
John Carpenter is Fire and Ice. Equally.
I seriously can't stop listening to this. I feel like it's a perfectly fitted hoodie.
Ambar Navarro did an AMAZING job here. Love the French/Hitchcock noir feeling
Some touches of Fritz Lang too!
It is something special that if you are 20 or 100 years old and your name is John Carpenter you will always be Super Cool. He is the GOAT
John Carpenter never misses when it comes to his soundtracks!!! 🤘🏻😎
Ghosts of Mars
😂@@volca8421
@@volca8421I was gonna say 😂
@@volca8421he had his reasons. Who are we to question?
Ghosts of Mars soundtrack was OK, Anthrax, Bucket Head & Steve Vai, what's not to like?
John Carpenter, one of my favourite directors. Dude just oozes talent. This would sound great in Heat2.
Yeah it would. Good call.
No one looks so damn cool standing behind the keyboard and pushing the keys like John Carpenter!
No wonder he gave birth to such ultimate cool icons like Wilson or Snake.
Great music all three of you guys! Keep it coming!
I've liked Carpenter for over 40 years. Today I have another confirmation with this electro/Rock sound. The video t👀
We're getting Lost Themes IV! This is so awesome! 🙌
@FijiFlowerthat is why he said about number IV waiting for a new album... Move that last neuron
Lost Themes 3 is one of my favorite vinyl listens. Never gets old. Skeleton is timeless.
I would absolutely love to see John direct the ultimate L.A. noir crime thriller and hear this music in it. This is superb. I also think the guitar playing is awesome. Killer lead playing, mean chords, big tone, and it screams. John is unique in that he was one of the very few filmmakers who can also score his own work, and not just give you his vision but the sonic landscape that goes with it. I love this.
John Carpenter is such a badass.
John Carpenter and his son damn this music slap so hard ! Carpenter son & dad are real genius
They always create such an atmosphere of emotions. 10/10
Dropping Natalie Mering in there is so crazy.
Gosh, when that guitar kicked in the hair stood up on my neck!
I'm so happy this exists.
Would love a new Carpenter flick.
I agree
How sick would it be if John did the HEAT 2 soundtrack for Michael Mann. This track is so KILLER!!!
dude yes!
I agree.
John you are an absolute LEGEND. I cant tell you how much I love The Thing and Big Trouble In Little China. Thank you for all that you do! Play some Quake with us sometime!
The drop/solo hits HARD.
John Carpenter = Talent
Great music it sounds something that belongs in a Micheal Mann film
..i love it
Holy fuck, John Carpenter forever. He never misses after decades.
This rocks my bones 💀 Amazing cinematography paired with legends of music.
I thought he only made soundtracks for his films! This is awesome!
Hell Yeah!
I dig this. It reminds me of Brandon Lee’s The Crow movie score. Especially the guitar tones.
So stylish. So moody. Anything scored by Carpenter is a masterclass. I can hear shades of the new Halloween scores in there but there's notes that remind me of Prince of Darkness too.
Completely agree
John Carpenter is a Great Legend. This track is fantastic
Epic, purely epic! I have to echo the sentiments of some of the others. I'm fortunate to live in a time where John Carpenter is still making music! I'd love to see one more movie from him but if this is what we get, I'll take it! Thank you JC and thank you for They Live, it's my favorite documentary!
FUCK YES!!!! Sounds so good. Now i want a neo-noir film by You , good sir. Cheers n Salute!
Got the soundtrack...now...
#BringBackPlissken
No. If there's one thing that's embarrassing the film industry these days, it's bringing back old heroes who think they've still got it in their 70's and 80's. Let the old action heroes die, this isn't their time anymore. Besides that, anytime they do bring them back, it always ends up being lackluster.
from the interviews I read John Carpenter played in rock n roll band as a teenager in Kentucky...before choosing to goto film school. Pretty cool that he's doing this after a long run making movies. And the most of the band is with family.
I don't care for this video much. The song itself is ok. The first two albums I found to be really good.
Yes! The band name I'm pretty sure was the coupe Devilles pretty neat! 👌
Carpenter hits a new level of movie genre. This time it is noir. And video itself? Absolute TOP!!! I am in awe. And as junkie of his films and especialy the music, I cant wait for Lost Themes IV! Go! Mister Carpenter! Go! 👌👍 I cerntainly need another dose of your music.
What can be said that hasn't already been said? Simply more sublime brilliance from the Master of Horror... and Music. Absolutely love it! xx
The great John Carpenter. Nothing else needs to be said.
John Carpenter is the coolest human.
This is surely the best music video I have seen in my life - no surprise.
It definitely feels like the child of his other amazing songs from The Fog, Escape from NY/LA, Big Trouble LIttle China, Halloween, and more.
Chill and rock as I like. John Carpenter is definitively one of the best ambient music producer ever.
Him alongside Brian Eno
His instrumentals always strikes a nerve bone chilling actually
You're right where you need to be, doing what you need to do. Still the very best.
When John Carpenter makes music, I sit there, and wait here for a little while. See what happens.
Superbe musique, merci et le clip hommage aux films noirs, génial 😀 Thank you very much guys
Many have tried to emulate the master. Many have failed. Also succeeded. John is one of the greatest artists of our time!
School is in session a master of the dark synthwave genre is speaking. John your art has stood the test of time and was formative to me as a young person growing up it provided solace to me and the social anxiety I felt your truly a master of your craft and I'm happy to see you out here still getting it! Never look back on any of it with remorse you gave the world dark and beautiful art you didn't sell out your visions redefined storytelling. This video and its cintext makes me as a history nerd think of WW2 SOE members deep behind enemy lines or detectives on the trail of a brutal and illusive serial killer.
Wow this is amazing as a long time fan of Carpenter's scores his production has only gotten better over the decades
Say what you want, he's a fu**ing genius.
Just awesome, melancholy synths and screaming electric guitar riffs. WOW
I need to play it again !!!
Would love to see him perform live again!
This is fantastic, love the energy, gorgeous synths and cool story
Plays games all the time, stays comfortably high, and drops absolute bangers like this with his kids. John Carpenter's retirement plan is aspirational.
Huge fan!!! Love all of his work and his music was always just as good...his movies would have never been the same with out his own written soundtracks...fantastic!!! ❤
He just needs to make the movie that goes along with this soundtrack.
No more movies
Let the man rest now, he doesn’t want to make movies anymore.
great music, great feelings.
Purrfect! The real Kat's meow. I keep watching it!
Now that is a jam I can blast while on a long drive at night.
I’ve always liked John’s music, but I started listening to it A LOT over the past two years after I read the band Dante High citing it as an influence.
Mister John Carpenter the Best
I hope someday JC does a Danny Elfman style tour
Talent just exudes in this family
The biggest thing about genuine film noire is the lighting, and this video nails it
I love such black and white atmosphere of noir/thriller films. Best regards to Mr. John Carpenter and all the creators! 🎵🎬
I'm used to seeing Carpenter on features. Watching and hearing his projects is such a treat!!! I'm just captivated by the screen. All my senses are in bliss. 💥 Make it better? He was jamming towards the end, during the wrap-up
This was the most captivating, bad-ass song and video. From here on out, whenever I’m driving around at night, this will be the only song I listen to. The master.
Love the vibe of being a silent movie. With a twist. The music was awesome
Don't sleep on Cody and especially Daniels solo material also. Crazy talent for one band
I was fortunate enough to see them play live and it was awesome! I hope they tour again. Excited for the new album.
When music wasn't afraid to NOT change 🤘
John Carpenter has always been one of my all time favorite musicians as well as filmmakers.
I’m so thankful the music is still flowing through their souls in 2024. Looking forward to another classic album!
The music for all movies ! And the video is the essence of the cinematic style
Wow, what a piece of music. And what a video. And Weyes Blood as the victim. I think I'll buy the vinyl today.
His Music Goes hard to this Day
Each time that man touches a piano something happens Its amazing love it 🫡
God damn, that hits! I LOVE IT!
This is gonna slap pretty hard live onstage. Hoping/wishing he’s got one last tour in him.
Fuck, this is so good. I'm just starting my modular / analog synth journey, and stuff like this (and all John's other music) is a huge inspiration for me.
John I hope you will be touring and coming to the uk I missed you last time and would love to see you guys live. Cracking track and can’t wait to get this and anthology 2 love the music you’re putting out
Yes please, may I have another.
I was just watching Body Bags. Thanks for the music John, Cody and Daniel.
Gets better every day
Как выдержанное вино хорошего урожая
Otro obra maestra del genio.
Listening to this track evokes a lot of Prince of Darkness, The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness!!! I love it
instantly subscribed .. awesome to see this
This was so good! Love the whole film noir vibe of the video! Surreal and beautiful...❤
Song and video both are freaking awesome! I'm excited for a whole album!
This was a real treat. A piece of pure creation, love, and inspiration.
Big John is immortal !
John Carpenter forever!!!
Fun brilliant man I'm so made up yessss go on John. Love it
10/10. Thank you for the workout/walk music SIR 🎉
This music is so addicted! I love it! Pure genius ❤
