I think we all knew some Spikes playing sports growing up. We all also knew a bunch of fizzle outs when who did jack squat when they got older. They aren't much different than "child prodigies" in other fields. Some achieve great things, while the vast majority are just trained well by daddy growing up and either rebel or can't accept the fact that their peers start to catch up with them.
I liked Spike, he was mean to them but at the end of the movie he was the first one of his team to clap for the Little Giants when they won, motioned for the rest of his team to clap for them as well, and told his dad that it was only a game. So Spike isn't a terrible character.
I always thought he was cuter than Junior. Junior was shallow and weak anyways. Becky was too much of a woman for him. She needed a tough guy like Spike to keep up with her.
