Little note, if you get a service done at a Nissan dealer you get 1 year of RAC European breakdown cover for free, not too bad when you consider a minor service is under £200
Same applies to Hyundai, not sure which breakdown company is involved, but after each yearly service another year of breakdown cover is added.
@@michaelkeen5010 Yes the same with Nissan in which it renews at each service,and we have used it a couple of times, once with a flat battery and once when a bit of heat shield became loose, certainly works out better than buying it separately whilst at the same time getting the all important dealer stamp in you service book.
RH specialist insurance include that in the price which mine is £234 a year
Ford is also the same
one small thing i have in all my cars ( even the daily ) .. one of those small kneeling pads .. take up zero room , but so nice when you have to change a wheel or similar
It's always nice to see the Volvo. 1988 was a good era for cars. Morrissey reached number 5 in the charts with Suedehead when this Volvo was first registered.
Its also worth loosening the wheel nuts/bolts one at a time and re-torquing them to ensure they arent too tight just in case.
Love the temporary outdoor tent set up " Not economically viable" uses to do outdoor repairs quite a strong metal framework tent.
Also, check that your older car is allowed into any city center you are planning to visit, Euroclass on engines might differ, in some places you need to buy a sticker that tells you payed for the "rude behaviour" of driving an old "stinker" into the city! ;)
Make sure breakdown cover includes recovery after an accident. Friends once found out the hard way after a non-fault head on crash. They assumed recovery would happen but their provider said no. Only if they'd broken down would they get recovered to the UK. They had to leave their vehicle in France and return by train/taxi/ferry.
I would also consider a Bip and Go windscreen tag if travelling to Europe and using toll roads. Saves getting out of the car and fiddling around on the auto routes. Best thing I ever bought and no charge if you don't use it!

I can definitely 3rd that, took my VW Camper to Spain last year and the queues for the tolls were surprisingly long....but with my bip&drive drove straight through the empty "Tag" gates, as it seems the locals only use cash...also note that my Bip&Drive only works in Spain and Portugal, you'll need a different one for France...check with Emovis to the country you're visiting (or driving through).
Dont have wheel brace. Have a long breaker bar at the least but I'd recommend bringing an electric impact if at all possible because if you need to change a whel onthe side of the road then its safest to spend as little time as possible on the side of the road.
Ah! The good old Renault 4. One little headlamp lever to change beam direction.

Definitely read the small print on the breakdown cover. I've just got back from 2,500 miles round Europe and wimped out taking one of my older cars as a lot of the roadside assist companies are expensive for older cars, and a lot limit the cost of recovery to the value of the car! Worth looking out for. I took my modern daily in the end, less fun but far cheaper for the breakdown cover and fuel.
Have a great trip Matt I can’t wait to do a road trip in my 940. Love how the crisps we were eating at still in the boot of the Volvos.
Make sure you have a working jack, scissors/knife and always carry a blanket in the "boot. A 5/10 liter "jerry can" of petrol is also a good idea, in case the fuel gauge fails.
Tyre plug kit is very handy too.
Top tips Matt. if , like me you never seem to have time, and some fluid looks a little dirty only, just pump out from whichever reservoir and mix in some fresh , but i always do an oil change before a road trip. check the auxilary belts and diff and gearbox oil levels

funny enough i broke two times straight after brussel from london to zurich first time coolant was gone had to do a repair which lasted me all the way to zurich second time around fuel needle was playing out ran out of petrol had to leave car on hard shoulder and walk one hour to the nearest petrol station
amazing all the stuff you have to take now still being over prepaired is better than under prepaired have a safe trip matt look foward to the vids donny
Spoiler alert: you don’t need to go anywhere to go to Europe! Just as Japan is in Asia and Japanese people don’t need to ‘go to Asia’, the UK is in Europe! Who knew???
You can always visit other parts of Europe or even the whole of the rest of Europe though…

Some great tips Matt, I know I do not have a classic or plan to drive abroad, but for example if I go to the Motorist I will still take two keys, oil, coolant on the off chance, another tip I would add is if you do not have a spare wheel then invest in one from the scrappy and get a new tyre and lob it in the boot if you have space.
I sense Barry may be involved in this roadtrip??
What might be extremely useful for Brits travelling alone in France is a télépéage transponder badge for the toll booths, so you don't have to reach over the passenger seat or get out of the car to get or pay your toll ticket.
I had four for France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

@@LesterLovesWatches it is even cooler when French drivers start gesticulating and beeping at you, because they think are in the wrong lane, and watch their faces when the barrier magically opens. There are even lanes where you can keep driving 30 km/h (sans arrêt) so you don't need to stop.

you mention the flipping of headlight aim from inside a modern- ironically on a 2016 on civic you CAN with halogen lights but NOT with the LED upgraded lights! 🙃

So much US English creeping around on you tube.
However....
I appreciate your tip about two ignition keys kept apart via two people. I never travel with both keys, but on the continent,this makes sense.
UK recovery and breakdown assistance does not automatically mean full recovery of one's car back to the UK, unless you specifically pay for the ", insurance" in advance.
Breakdown assistance on the continent means that the recovery is calculated on the value of the car.
Cost of recovery v value of car= you will receive only the cost of the car if it's less than the recovery.
Breakdown organisations have learned from experience and will not cart one's £500 banger back to blighty at their expense of perhaps £1,500.

A long long time ago (1994) I did all that including paying an extra ton on my AA to bump it up to full euro cover and headed off to chemnitz east germany in my polski fiat pick up to lay bricks , after being there a couple of months the inevitable happened and it broke down , luckily there were plenty of spares available and a replacement coil had it running fine , however I had phoned the AA back in england and they authorised the repair telling me to post the receipt when I got back home, " I won't be home for another month, that's fine " guess what when I got home and posted it the reply was I'd left it too long should have posted within 30 days of the repair
I've stopped doing it now but every time I got collared by an AA man outside a supermarket I'd tell him no and bore him with story
Safe travels, Chris! A wonderful vehicle to travel in, if only by reputation rather than personal experience. It is such a brilliant vehicle for being so dignified, mechanically straightforward, reliable, and durable. One of those few vehicles like the original Range Rover that set out with such a sensible purpose, and the design tailored to specification rather than than the drivetrain and passenger compartment / storage areas having to be shoehorned into the designer's sexy body. I always loved the 740 / 760, and my favorite model with the possible exception of the P1800 / 1800S with all due respect to the late, great Roger Moore!

Interesting video, Matt. Hope you and the Volvo have a great time. I haven't thought twice about anything special for a long drive. My car was sometimes used for work and a thousand miles a week was not uncommon. Then again, my Volvo hates sitting and exacts revenge at the earliest opportunity. Mind you, in 7½ years I have put very nearly 200,000 miles on the old boy. He never sits long enough for thing to go wonky. I would check the condition of differential and transmission oils, flushing as needed. Carry spare fan belts. Have fun.
Excellent advice because some of the essential items I could easily have overlooked. What is the mpg of this Volvo at a steady cruising speed of 60mph? My 1984 Volvo 340 only has 4 gears so motorway speeds it is a bit revvy. For a 1.4 it is also quite thirsty.
Also worth taking a first-aid kit. Some countries have additional requirements, e.g. spare pair of glasses in Spain if you need them to drive.
Will look forward to footage of the trip. I love these Volvos, my mates dad had a new 760 GLE back in the day, very plush compared to my dads Montego. I also remember being driven in a 760 turbo which was a very alarming thing with very little traction…..
You’ve also discovered that a lot of a Mercedes W205 is aluminium. I’m surprised Mercedes don’t make more of a song and dance about it!
Some good practical advice Matt! I hope The French police think the cable ties are innocent 😂! I thought GB stickers looked cool and UK don’t look right after 112 years of GB. Happy motoring in Europe 🇪🇺
I always just gun it with old cars lol. When I do have an issue I just improvise something from the nearest parts shop and get on with it.
dont forget the locking wheel nut key if your car has one!! i also take a warning beacon and triangle just in case as i have had an electrical failure at night and if there is no street lighting it can be very dark, hope you enjoy the road trip and the only time you have to touch the items in the boot is when you take them out when you get home , look forward to seeing what you get up to👍
Aren't triangles part of the basic (obligatory) equipment? They are in Serbia.
@@DashCamSerbia Triangles are obligated in Germany. Don't know about other countries though.
@@DashCamSerbia mandatory in France too. And very useful. I could have had a few terrible accidents if some people hadn't thought about using theirs.

Lots of obfuscation whilst driving in France. ‘French’ after all. Best advice I can give is to outwardly display everything you need to. UK sticker - but not an old GB and a UK sticker, headlight deflectors if you need them (but most modern LED headlights are adjustable from within) and the Crit'Air sticker. Which is often overlooked, but only costs about 5 Euros. If you do all that and stick within the speed limit, you are very unlikely to be pulled over. Replacement bulbs, breathalysers and fire extinguisher are not mandatory. However, do keep your hi-vis jackets (one for every person) inside the car. Not in the boot. As you need to wear them as you step out of the car if required. Warning triangle also a requirement by law as you say.
If you are a total incompetent like me a mobile phone translation program is also a good idea. If you speak 3 or 4 languages, I envy you. To Paraphrase Douglas Adams, Europe is big, really big.You might think it's a long way down the road to the Chemist, but that's just peanuts to Europe."
Driving in the French countryside and on motorways is mostly a joy . Don’t forget, statistically you won’t break down.

Grand Luxe is what GL was originally badged as. GLE is Grand Luxe Executive. DL, the entry level in North America, is Deluxe.

Just curious, but whatever happened to brits calling it "the continent", instead of "europe?" I am sure I heard it often some years ago. Was it just a subset of people or has it changed among the general population? I see a lot of people, at least in the youtube comments these days, thinking britain isnt part of europe.... Perhaps in part influenced by people calling the european mainland/continent for just "europe"?

Excellent advice i still have an holdall full of things i needed back in the day although it needs updating as its been a few years since I drive to Spain via France
GB plates and the GBI along with the GBM, the GBJ and GBG are still acceptable here. An Garda know the NI and GB registration plates anyway along with new EU ones. Carrying one's licence has also been compulsory for years here. We have to display an insurance disc, NCT (MOT) and tax disc on the windscreen so that is always with us (not in the 21st C yet). If you are driving someone else's car then a letter of authorisation as well as the registration document and an open or named (yours) driver insurance certificate is required, helps if copies of the letter are in the languages of countries driving through. Your UK plate should be on the left or center rear in mainland Europe. Just wish I had an address/property in the UK as a neighbour does, his cars have UK registrations and taxed/insured/MOT'd there as way cheaper than here (insurance half the cost). Saves the registration costs and import VAT (23%) as well.
As a continental I am always very disappointed if I see a classic with a UK badge instead of a GB badge.

@@JeeGee114 The country Identification plates are an international convention and I don't think the UK govt. can change it on a whim. They're just sticking two fingers up at international conventions and law.
The best way in my experience to ensure your classic is ready is not to garage it in the winter 😂 just keep driving all year.
Don’t forget for France that you need a warning triangle as well as a yellow vest (also useful if you fancy demonstrating against Macron 😂, please do, we’d appreciate it !).
As for speed cameras, they are everywhere, I’m not sure they can find you once you’re back in the UK, but if you get stopped by the Gendarmerie it’ll be on the spot. And it’s expensive ! If you are aver the limit by more than 25kmh, they can take your license and even confiscate your car!!!

In Australia you have to have your drivers license with you when you drive and l have a spare key for my 1997 Toyota Hilux in my wallet and it has no central locking but l have locked the keys in the ute a couple of times

I dont know wether the auto locking is the same system as onthe s/v40 but that one only locked the doors if the key was in the ignition.

I thought that French had broke all of their speeding cameras in the riots.
Most got repaired and some even upgraded. Still useless because in a fixed position. Only very distracted people or those who don't care because they drive a shady rental sports car get a flash.

Genuine question from a confused American: I understand that the V5 is legal proof of ownership of the car, correct? So if you take the V5 with you and the car is stolen with the V5 inside it, won’t that let the thief claim ownership? (Perhaps claiming they just purchased the car since they have both the car and the ownership document?). In the US we have a state-issued “title” document which indicates car ownership, and we would never keep the title in the car itself due to the concerns I mentioned above. But perhaps I don’t understand exactly how the V5 works.
V5 is proof of who the registered keeper is - not who owns the vehicle. The bill of sale evidences who owns the vehicle.
Do not fear French cops. Step 1: As long as you are doing nothing stupid, they won't bother. 2: If you get stopped, your mountain of up to date paperwork, and a polite smile will do wonders. This and your Volvo's natural charm.

Not a must, but i like to have a clean spear tire. Becouse if you have a flat tire, everything is bleghhh. When you get dirty hands / cloths becouse of it it frustrated even more 😀

If you're driving through France, do you need a Crit'Air vignette for your car?
You theoretically need one to get into low emissions zones. Which, despite all the signage being there for years, cannot be enforced by the police for constitutional reasons.

@@HowardLeVert thank you for having me check again. They had the official decree signed on dec 24th 2022. You can check the "Journal Officiel". You theoretically may get a €68 fine. But I can assure you that at least in Lyon where I live, no one bothers much with this, police included. Looking at the state of the fleet in the least posh parts of the town : lots of them don't even have a Contrôle Technique (which invalidates the insurance they don't all have to start with...) and are too old and too diesely to get a CritAir. They couldn't enforce such laws without having a yellow vests style revolution on their hands.
