- Опубліковано 29 жов 2017
- From Run DMC to Roc-a-Fella, from DMX to Young Thug, Lyor Cohen discovered and broke some of the most prolific musical acts of our time at the helm of the biggest labels. In a conversation that spans his decades of leadership in the industry, he shares how failing as a party promoter led him to working for Russell Simmons, how he invented the 360 deal, surviving the turmoil of the business, and the feeling in his gut that propels him to this day.

"Tall Israelis is runnin' this rap shit" ~ Mos Def
This guy never had black friends growing up now he control black music
He still doesn't have black friends...
Exactly, liar Cohen
Correct
When you hear about the puppet master in urban music it's this Jewish guy
Jews are the Puppet Masters of everything they were the first ones to evolved they were Adam & Eve,they were the first awakened PPL,The Chosen Ones,THE PUPPET MASTERS
I believe the term is 'tall israeli'.
i am glad this is the top comment with some real knowledge
I don't think he's a puppet master I think he started in that game Early and he uses a strategy that works in the industry he's basically been using that strategy for years in any business you have to follow the blueprint if you work in a warehouse for 10 years your still a puppet if that's the cases because you gotta kiss ass for 10 years to keep that job the difference is he's making millionaires and not $12 a hour workers
He owns Yung Hustle Records
Russell Simmons: The founder and Chairman built Def Jam
No Def Jam without Russell !
Rick Rubin actually started Def Jam and Russell teamed up with him. But yeah, Rick and Russell ‘Built’ Def Jam. Lyon was pulled in later.
Russell says in his book that both him and Rick gave Lyor keys to the company as they were finding the next thing
I can’t believe the title says how “lyor Cohen built def jam” where do you even begin with something like that
Lyor is powerful, man. Dude can make things happen in music before Russel or Rick.
@@biggs2158
that's not true at all, what did lyor do in the music business before he met russell? u guys really gotta stop sayin stupid shit u can't even prove
@@blackfistmediagroup5779 I meant currently weirdo. Chill out lol what the fuck you gettin all hyped over a comment for?? Dont @ me, nobody said anything, go somewhere else lol
@@blackfistmediagroup5779 only reason you commented was because I brought up Lyor (w white Jew) having power over people lol you didn’t even say anything about Rick , just brought up Russell. Go take that shit to another comment
Dead Wrong. Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons BUILT DEF JAM.
JAZZY JAY and RICK started DEF JAM……Rush did build it RICK left in 88 ….ua-cam.com/video/JzlSfxliUcg/v-deo.html @5 min mark
jewish playbook.... Divide and conquer
@@josephfarrior6715 You couldn't be more accurate. I didn't know til recently that he broke up Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh. Split em up while they still owe a project. Then have them sign a new deal but hooking them for projects still owed. Just a dirty businessman.
And Warren G saved it!
Liar Cohen, get your facts straight! Russell Simmons built Def Jam!
people are really mad because he had foresight and saw that hip hop would be a profitable industry. not to mention you dont make all this money with out griding it doesnt matter who you are.
For some reason, when he talks, I don't believe a damn thing he says.
hahahaha totally, born rich. easy to make money when you have it at your disposal
I respect Dame Dash a lot more, after hearing Lyor speak, a lot of Dame's issue's was having to deal with people like Lyor. While watching Jay suck up to him like a bitch.
That's exactly white!
denmark555 Yeah well that's good intuition
lue630 would it of been better to be born poor and struggling?
Dame Dash is somewhere losing his shit! Lmaoo
Fuego9 the title tho
Fuego9 lol facts
Pause
Fuego9 lol exactly what i was thinking about
Tech companies run the music industry now
They only control distribution. The labels deal with them and other companies like Live Nation to control the artists and the rest of the industry.
Tech companies run the world now.
And who runs those tech companies?
@@lennybrewster4673 Oligarchs
They need dame on here
It would be great but he doesn't like talking about his past record label and label partners.
Financed by Mommy and Daddy
Russel Simmons and Rick Rubin built Def Jam.
Billy Lee prove me wrong
thank you so much for this insightful interviews!!
His mentality of running into the next game changer in a daily basis is amazing
Culture Vulture #1
Search for Uhuru dude stfu with that bullshit. There are only 3 types of people in this world: Pimps, Hoes and Tricks. Dont get mad at the Pimps for turning you suckers out, y'all make it so easy it's like taking candy from a fuckin baby, a baby i tell ya, A BABY!!!
facts !
Jews were just as involved with the creation of hip-hop as black people were...
Search for Uhuru do something about it
FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!
what is the background music begining at 17:30?
Love this series! So good at interviewing and streamlining with the right questions too. One of my UA-cam favorites
I wouldn't trust anyone named Lyor...
Rico Suave trusted a guy named Rob. ... He robbed me. Lesson learned.
Arnez Edwards - Hehehehe..
As a kid I was devastated when rejected by my teacher after submitting Lyor Cohen as my "Influential Business Figure" I wished to write about for my research paper. With an hour to turn in a topic, and a much needed grade on the line, my friend grabbed a golden labeled book from his bag (one that his father had suggested), and it was called "Trump - The Art of the Deal". With minutes to go and music on my mind, I proceeded to grab the "National Best-Selling" book, submit the approved topic, and conduct the report on Mr. Trump. Fast forward = late 80's to the current 2k era, I remember concluding my presentation in front of the class by stating that this topic fell into my lap last minute. I closed with a prediction that Donald Trump would one day find himself in the presidential office of the US, but men like Russel Simmons, Lyor Cohen, Clive Davis, and Rick Rubin would run the world in their own creative and brilliant right. - John Whitman, Founder / CEO, Shadowbox Corp. (Video - Complex Hustle / UA-cam).
Great interview.
his name aint lyor cohen its 360
😂
He wears 3 6's on his shirt.
No his name is liar cohen
thank you! That helped me a lot!
Wow the last sentence was just a blast! Great interview. Thank you!
Great video!!!
I love hearing his stories I wish I could get more like a book.
Powerful interviews. These Blueprint will save your life if you're an upcoming song writer/producer.God bless all
Built def jam LOL the white narrative is sickening
Built their brand. Not the building, the label. They're NOT saying he started def jam (Founder)...
Y'all need to peep game. Just like how ppl say Malcolm X didn't build the NOI
Jewish
#Culture Vulture
you skipped a big ass step Noah . how did he go from throwing a party to working at a label?
Exactly
I've never heard of this guy and know nothing about his subject matter but he speaks very well. I just adore the slowness in his conversation. Very engaging and easy to listen to. He hardly uses any spices, just ordinary salt and a bit of pepper. Very, very nice and down to earth.
Excellent show!
Great interview. #TheBlueprint
OMG Thank you so much guys! Such a bright person, such an enlightenment. Couldn't even dream to watch an interview with him Ever! Good Wins obviously!
Thank you Lyor your contribution is invaluable. The knowledge, the experience and most of all the way you see things, the way you think and talk.
I'm sorry but I feel like I just talk with the god of music and I feel so so so grateful for that. I've watched all of his speeches I could find on youtube a long time ago.
There's very few people who did so much for the music. Who actually have dedicated their whole life to the present and future of humanity. To the culture.
Love, respect and my best wishes to Lyor. Looking forward to meet you once. It feels like just couple minutes next to him can completely change the life path.
His perspective on music, business and art is unique and fantastically useful. Made my day. Maybe more then just this 1 day. Going to watch this 1K times!
The problem with these type of interviews is they always leave a lot out. Like one second he's studying shrimp and the next he's on the road with Run DMC. Like I think we might be missing some stuff here... They go from point A to like point G instead of one letter at a time.
ikr it sounds like were asking for too much but were not. we just want the important steps that got them to their big breakthrough.
built Def Jam...what about Russell?....Culture Vulture.
U.C.ME!! Visuals MG what about him..
Anthony Bailey what about him?!!! HE'S the one who created Def Jam records ..him and Rick Rubin.. Not this CULTURE VULTURE..FOH
U.C.ME!! Visuals MG or Rick.....

Interviewer looking shook AF. Like they are holding his family hostage somewhere nearby.
Built Defjam? Russell Simmons built Defjam this guy is just an employee
Useful information
Losers hate. Winners Learn.
Nice
Losers are supposed to learn haha, but sometimes they're just losers.

360 equals sign your life away, Go independent!
This was dope
The 360 deal lol genius!!
Everyone has a story to tell, glad I heard this one.
don't judge or hate man just learn form this man, built yourself a life and don't be hateful... to all neg. comments..
Great interview !!!!
Smart man / Yung Hustle Records
Give them the ROC ,let them make their own mistakes. Very interesting.
it's better for me in these nouns🌐
Complex slow your roll with how Lyor Cohen "Built" def jam ,Rick and Russel BUILT DEFJAM.
Lyor was an errand boy that cunningly helped push Rick out of the way to make space for him.
Reggie Yates brought me here lol!!! 😂😂
OG. Hard tyo argue with his clarity
Best one thus far
Whoever did the instrumentals on this is 🔥and why do i hear Hova droping a Album to these beats
These are the people who put money and control our projects. If you’re tired of seeing people who don’t look like you or come from where you from controlling/funding/moving the culture, then ask yourself this. What’re you doing to have your people own our culture?
7.57 lol of course the guy who brought the record to the Run DMC gig was Gilles Peterson.
What’s with the hate? This guy is giving us gems
Harold Nguyen Probably because he's a Jew.
great info indeed... but there is also allot of one sided info.. self praise and lies.. but I guess he's telling it the way he would've wanted it to be.. lol
You clearly don't know anything about how evil this guy is in how he manipulates the hip-hop industry.
Exactly
gotchafool please explain....
💯
interesting interview
Today is that day. Thank you Cohen
Some good education here
Mr.Culture Vulture,Russell's fault..How did they allow JMJ to die broke?
JMJ was shot in his studio....
thaynk u vayree muhch💗💕🌈😃👍
MUSIC? Especially in the Beginning 1:24. Love this Synth.
Complex involved in this too. If they're tryna make him look good
DOPE DOPE DOPE
If you have been doing something for a number of years, you would think he would be more fluent in discussing his work. This shows you they're not interested in the culture, just the money.
Big up to Lyor for recognizing Redman and his contributions to giving Def Jam the resurgence it needed
imyanigmw Was going to write something similar when I came across your comment.
He doesn't seem like a bad guy. But I'm going to follow my spirit and not trust this dude
I`m next!!!!
Yung Hustle Records
I live by Los Feliz great city
This the dude dame dash always talks about
With all due respect... now I know what NOT to do. Thanks guys!
This is the easiest time in the HISTORY of music to put music out independently,he "controls" music b/c artist dont want to build slowly on their own, they want the big bag with no effort!
Precisely because its do easy to put your music out there, that the big guns are making all the money. They have the cash to spend on advertising, while people who dont will drown in the flood of new music being made.
Lol you guys keep hating but this is the real fucking MVP
the reason youtube hired Lyhor is they know outside of the controversy hes winning the platform (300) he created in a volatile market and they want to see how hes doing it,
I feel like signing to a label depends on circumstance. Sometimes artists have dope product however the exposure and support is not there. It doesn't seem like a bad idea if you never had the independent wave going and you need some exposure. Nothing is forever, pay some dues.
These folks are the UNDERTAKERS of good music....what we had BEFORE the death jams of the world
It’s like y’all got a interview with Satan himself.
"Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?"
Listen to Jay's words and by that very same methodology listen to Mr. Cohen's words. Hint...It's all about the details. ⳩
"The Logo will be our light" -Mr. Lyor Cohen
2016 December 🎡
Why's everyone being so negative and abusing Lyor, just listen to what he's saying and be inspired. I bet most of you would sign a 360 if its offered.
Alt Recordings you don't know shit
People don't question anyhting anymore. What is a Jew doing working in the shrimp industry? That makes 0 sense.
he didnt work there just tried to see what he could steal lmao
Thank You Lyor Cohen.#MotionsMakesMoments
I don’t understand why artists sign deals these days. This shows most aren’t hustlers.
Anonymous 3 it depends on the situation honestly if you get a 1-4 mil advance at 360 for 3 albums and 3 mixtapes over 6-8 years it's not really an L. Some artists need creative control some just need exposure and an image.
Anonymous 3 because there is no precedence for successful independent artists who aren’t already rich
Russell Simmons built Def Jam. Lyor added to it.
Africa unites ( Bob Marley )
Godfather of Hip-Hop
Red Parrot was a tough club.. Midtown. Diverse crowd.. 1980s.
Noah Calloway's a Culture Vulture yes man
This the guy who influenced Jay Z to leave Rocafella
Wow what a legend, and I hate record labels.
Cultureing a artist what he really means is destroying hiphop from within take the authentic sound of the soul and rhythmic section from the african drums and black renaissance eras and the masculine traits to dumbing down of young men , they been doing this since rock n roll jazz blues funk flooding the industry with Elvis Presley’s to the point were hihop will not be recognized as black poetry to express inward perceptions
Lyor Cohen is not a Liar at all... what an astounding TREP! I'll be reviewing this interview on the TREP Show today in hopes to help the next enTREPreneur that becomes a billion dollar business founder. Find EPs at thetrepshow dot com THX Complex for producing such a quality piece of journalism
Bars actually. The 360 deal is good for new artists with no base signing to a major. The label gets a cut of everything but is developing everything. It's basic risk management. Artists prejudge Lyor because his business systems protect the label, which is what he is retained to accomplish. You have to know what it is going in and what the expectations are going through while having a robust exit strategy moving forward.
Russell and rick Ruben build Def Jam started from Rush Mgmnt . Lyon came on later as Run DMC road manager .
Was hoping this was hosted by Blueprint.
Oh well.
not mention James Todd Smith! Wow...
