Charles is, I think, the only one Max respects in every racing way. He knows he can push Lando wide, because LN won't retaliate, he knows he can do the same to Lewis, because LH will yield and fight for another day. But with Charles, when he did push him off in Austria 2019 he got the same treatment back in the UK next race. Charles will give as much shit back to Max as he gets. And that's why these two fighting is so exciting, they will BOTH push to the limit, but won't go over it. And if they will, they know they can expect the same stuff back from the other. I can't wait for next year, honestly.

We saw it in Qatar, George had the car as much as Max, but he fumbled and went from 1st to 3rd in one corner… I don't see George as a serious contender, this year showed how much consistency you need to get a championship campaign going without a car that is 2 seconds quicker than every other car from race 1 to 24… Max had to fight tooth and nails to not let it slip away and one little moment of bad luck or inconsistency can mean you're going from hero to zero (like with Lando in Brazil)… And george is currently 3rd in the world destructors championship, even ahead of the likes of Logan…
Hot take but this is good. F1 needs beef between some drivers. Im happy most of them are friends...but it is pretty interesting when different characters just dont mix
It just makes it that much more personal and entertaining to watch knowing that they might get aggressive without having any regard for their off track relationship or image

Totally agree that he's "Prostlike". I've been saying this since the start of the 2022 season. Yes, he's got the Senna "flair" - Brazil this year was definitely more Senna than Prost, regardless of Prost's talent (I have been watching F1 since the early 70s, so I do know what I'm talking about! And I was more for Prost than Senna, even though I thoroughly appreciated him too) - but after the quite bitter battles in 2021, he seemed to have flicked a switch in his mind. The knowledge of the rules and being prepared to get them applied, for example. Definitely more Prost!
Max is every great F1 champion in one body. He's all the GOATs distilled. Russell doesn't rate. What's he been in F1 7 seasons now? He's got 3 wins. This comparison is an insult.

In Qatar, Max saw that Lando suddenly gained more than half a second and suggested on the team radio that Lando didn't lift. That, to me, is fair. Lando closed the gap during a double yellow and it's fair to call it out. Norris got on the radio and cited Hamilton for speeding in the pit lane. To me, that's also fair. What George did, which was to lobby for a penalty which he embellished by speeding up to the back of Max who was being held up by Alonso, was over the line. George knew that he was pushing for an undeserved penalty. I don't think Max would have been upset if George hadn't made it look worse and hadn't done a whole "cry me a river" routine to push for Max to be given an undeserved penalty.

@@deathtrooper2048 That has nothing to do with the fact that Norris and Hamilton deserved their penalties in Qatar while the penalty Max received in qualifying for impeding a car on an outlap was not deserved and every commentator/pundit said so. In the US GP, Max was at the apex ahead of Norris and, knowing the rules, he pushed Norris until he either backed off or went off the track. Norris went off the track, accelerated and gained a position. That's a clear penalty for Norris. If Norris had given the position back, there would not have been a penalty. In Mexico, Max was twice penalized 10-seconds: once for forcing a driver off the track and another for going off track and gaining a position (like Norris did in the US). Clearly, Max gets penalties too.

Don't think Russel has what it takes to beat Max in a close championship. Russel is not underrated, he is fairly rated. A good race in Vegas does not suddenly make him this underrated title contender.

@@gameofender4463 Firstly, he has gotten 3 poles on merit. The Qatar pole is not a showcase of his speed, but rather of his incessant whinging. In Vegas, Mercedes had by far the best car. It was not even close. So, to make a point of how fast he is, based on 2 poles, is a bit of a stretch. Russel is too inconsistent, and a Hamilton past his prime is still oftentimes faster than Russel on a Sunday. If there is a driver that will bring the fight to Max given a fast car, it's Leclerc.
Why I was surprised when he actually won after getting a pole. Not worried at all since he always fµcks up at some point. Most times in the end when pressure gets to him. So yeah. He might have insights but certainly lacks the consistency needed to be a WDC.

I am a bit late to this party but there’s a big difference between racing hard on track and yes, playing the steward out in the open (Lando said he would do exactly the same) and diving in the penalty box whilst faking an injury. With one eye on the ref to see if your theatrics have succeeded. And it did, out came the card!

I do 100% what Verstappen said about how Russell acts, he’s the politician of the grid. I admire it though, he’s doing everything he can to succeed and he’s found an area where he can outperform Verstappen. It’s going to take a Herculean effort to beat Verstappen to a title and that driver will have to do everything in their power to win, and I’m more convinced that Russel has that fire in him than Norris does. I really hope Russell gets a car that can challenge so we can see how good he is, I do think Verstappen is better but Russell will make it a proper fight (as would Leclerc, if not even more so)

We have an insignificant sample size; but if Qatar is any indication of how it could play out on track, it seems like Verstappen will come out on top. It appears that this incident just fired up Verstappen even more- he literally told Russell that he'd take back P1 before the first corner and he did just that. And what did Russell do? He not only lost out P1 to Max, but he also lost out P2 to Lando. Although Russell is a much better politician than Verstappen is, it doesn’t seem to be having any positive outcome for Rusell. In fact, it seems to be doing the opposite, an angry Verstappen who feels that he's been wronged is going to be much fiercer on track. I genuinely believe Russell wouldn't come out on top 9 out of 10 times he does things like this. Also, we all know how well Verstappen knows the rules and how well he uses it by always being at the very edge of what's acceptable. So if George is going to try pull something off like Qatar qualifying, what's gonna stop Max from doing the same? I wouldn't be surprised if Max starts doing the same thing that George did- knowing full well that there were cars ahead making a gap, being able to see clearly cars going slow and still driving fast up to the back of a slow car and moving last minute, then complaining that they were driving too slowly/ dangerously.

i guess it's a sign of F1 as a whole not really being used to dutch drivers being at the top, but max's whole issue with the penalty wasn't even so much the penalty itself, it was george's conduct surrounding it. max can and will "snitch" (see lando the literal next day), but he will do so in full view of everyone, he's open and honest like that. george was being two-faced about it, saying one thing to the media, and saying something completely different behind closed doors. if you want to piss off ANY dutch person, go and do that. that's why max was this aggressive about it, it's quite clearly something he genuinely despises.
Well said. Comments here show there are too many fans who cannot understand perspective. The two incidents couldn't be more different. Max always keeps his cool which is reflected in his driving. Those who lost their cool ruined their own race or in Norris and McLaren's case lost the season.
Norris get penalized is slamdunk. He was the only one to ignore obvious double-yellow flags. Lando himself said he would have done the same. Max needs to keep all the rules in mind, because all those British just want to cheat and snitch. So Max only has to drive faster with no issues.
Nobody except the Dutch care about the nationality, it is the behaviour. Verstappen is a precious, entitled tit. And it shows. He thinks everything has to be given to him, he shows no respect for officials, or other drives and would be nowhere without his superior British chassis. This whole gentleman Lewis narrative is so daft. 2007-2012 he was absolutely elbows out at McLaren - especially in 2011 and 2012! He was super aggressive with Nico 2014-2016, routinely dumping Nico off track at turn one. He raced very cleanly 2017-2020 because there was no-one giving him a hard time. Mercedes changed their rules of engagement in-house so that the drivers couldn't split strategy, basically hogtying Bottas in races as he was starting behind Lewis two thirds of the time, and no matter what Andrew Benson says, the Mercedes was very much the best package in 2018 for Vettel's half-hearted title challenge. I think Lewis seems like a great guy off track, and is 100% in the conversation for the GOAT, but people need to stop acting like he hasn't shown the same wheel to wheel ruthlessness as the other multiple world champs who have come before him. We see people nick a single title here and there when they have a golden year, but I would say it's pretty rare for a MULTIPLE champions not to be ruthless. Schumi, Alonso, Senna, Prost, Piquet, Lauda all BRUTAL when they needed to be. I'd say maybe Hakkinen is the most recent exception.

The comparison of Max having Championships and George only 3 or 4 wins interesting. One spent 3 years at the back of the grid. While one won his first Championship in 2021. Then finally gets to Merc and he is in a Mid Team. But, still manges to get few wins, poles, podiums. So where and with what was he supposed to win or at least fight for wins and Championship. I mean in 2022 Ferrari were fighting for Championship and bottled it. 2023 RB was in another galaxy. 2024 Maclaren bottled it as well. How and where was W13-15 meant to win a Championship. At least he showed glimpse of potential.
At 17, in his 1st F1 season, Max Verstappen became the youngest F1 driver to score points, a record that will never be broken. In his first F1 season, Verstappen scored 49 points...IN A MINARDI! How many seasons did it take Russell to score 49 points?
George is so underrated. The problem with Max vs George is that they ruffle a lot of feathers. They are both very vocal and usually refuse to accept that they are wrong/at fault, at least publicly. It can make them unlikeable to some fans and even drivers as they have so much confidence in themselves and their opinion. This is why they are butting heads and usually do when they are near each other on track. It’s not really a problem though because it is a reason to watch the sport. Everybody remembers 2021 and 2016 and Prost vs Senna etc. because of the rivalry and the tension and that tension is there between Max and George clearly. It’s just tension not a rivalry now though since George has not had a title contending car nor have Max and George really had a similar level car at any point so the battles have been few and far between. I don’t think there’s as much of a gap as people think too because with Russell there is definite quali pace and when he’s had the car he’s delivered. My issue for Russell would be certain lapses in concentration like COTA when he turned into Sainz, Singapore and Melbourne when he crashed etc. My money is on Max though, he is clearly special. In a proper battle for the title, we have a very strong grid to compete with Max so from what I’ve seen: - Max beats Lando (LN hasn’t got the confidence in himself that MV has so recovering from worse moments could be harder for him than Max) - Max beats George (Maxs consistency and a few mistakes from George, mistake free George and it’s very close) - Max vs Piastri (idk, a growing Piastri is a serious threat to Max, OP keeps on the upwards trajectory and we’ve a serious battle) - Max edges Lewis (Would be a race by race championship, purely depends on the teams development and who has the faster car more often, Max is in his prime right now so I think could maybe just get him) Max vs Carlos (Would love to see Carlos fight for a championship, such a great guy and great driver, Carlos’ key strength is intelligence whereas Maxs is the talent and instinct he has, I think Max is special and is a proven champion so I would favour him) Max vs Charles (This is the moneymaker, we have to get this properly done, Charles this year in a title contending car and Max has a problem still, Charles is almost ahead of LN now and the McLaren has been the fastest car overall, mistake free Charles in a functioning championship level team (probably not Ferrari) has the best chance of beating MV in similar machinery, also is able to race MV well when he must when we have seen LH, LN and GR struggle to do so cleanly and effectively) If 2025 is like this year but closer it will be so good. The calibre of drivers is elite especially in the top 4 teams with MV, LN, OP, LH, GR and CL all fighting for the same position and who knows maybe Antonelli can step in the Merc and be special or the second red bull seat is taken by a stronger competitor (Sainz/Alonso, Checo just not at that level). Finally, Fernando edges Max, there we go I said it.
I honestly do not think any of the drivers like George. I think most of them like Max a lot more as he is a chill guy outside of the track and always talks straight.
Except for the fact that Prost is a 4-time world champion and a 51-time winner. Sound familiar? No. Because Russel has less wins than Verstappen has championships.
That was a perfect introduction to the 2025 title protagonists, pointing out there strenghts and weaknesses, but most importantly there characters. At the beginning of his career I didnt like Max for his "over the limit driving style", but I liked and respected him more and more over the years for his "honest ruthlessness" and "no bullshit attitude". I would love to see him in a title fight with Oscar (my favourite driver), because for me they are the purest racers on the grid. But against all the others it would be very interesting as well :) All in all a great video, Tommo :)
Max v Fernando, Charles and Lewis is more interesting. Oscar is on the cusp of greatness, better than Lando IMO, but he isn't in the same league as the 1st tier guys.
I don't think Max would ever see George as THE rival. I think he sees Charles in this position and respects him in a diffrent way. Personally i don't see Max and George have a rivalry like Senna and Prost. I get the similarities but they are not each others biggest rival
Not too long ago we saw russel make some very crucial and naive mistakes during the race, escpecially compared to lewis. Max is a different beast in terms of aggression and natural talent, and above all consistency. Russel still has lots of learning to do in my opinion.

I don’t think George had made many if any major mistakes due to incompetence etc. Small misjudgments sure, but it wasn’t like he was out of his depth. It was just small errors with big consequences. And I’d also add, the W13 and W14 were such a handful that even Lewis find them challenging and chose to leave Mercedes because of it. Like, if Lewis finds them difficult and he’s a 7x WDC, it’s not really fair to hold it against George too much.

9:55 I fully disagree with you on this one. At that time what Max did was exactly within the rules, his frontwing was in front of Lando at the Apex, which means it was his corner. That is the rule. In the next race the FIA decided they had enough and gave Max 2x 10 sec. penalty. Which means this rule will be changed next year, if not he will keep doing it.
If you think that’s the rule, then please look at highlights on UA-cam lap 1 of that race at the same corner Carlos Sainz’s overtake on max. Then come back here and tell me why max didn’t get a penalty for the same thing that Lando does
Thanks Tommo for this refreshing take on squabbles between these two Drivers. If one takes away their Team/Driver bias you'll see it and appreciate it. They're are actually my two favourite drivers if I have to choose. Them and Piastri have similar driving style. Unapologetically ruthless and competitive. They're the same, yet different. Agree and concur 💯 with your takes. Different personalities and cultures and temperament. George has shown from day 1 of coming to Mercedes that every time he gets an opportunity to fully compete with Max , hes does. Example, Spain 2022 impressive defense. Brazil 2022 Sprint. Baku 2023. Monaco 2024. Has jumped on race starts. Yes, the Mercedes car didn't have RB pace this year so he couldn't keep positions gained. People forget that George, Leclerc and Ocon have raced Max in their Junior Categories and they've beaten him. So you can see its those drivers that are not awed by him. They don't fear him. Thats why he gets infuriated by them. I mean, he almost punched Ocon previously. I think George surprised Max and Team that he can fight at the Stewards like RB has done a million times before. Most Team would shrink when they got there. The fury I suspect has nothing to do with what George has supposedly done, but shocked that they lost it and George was willing to fight. Also, I was once a naughty teen. Therefore, I got into alot of trouble and usually will be the first to run and state my side of the story and overly dramatise. Max reminded me of that. Usually, if i am at the right side of the argument I didn't rush to speak to anyone who would listen. Max was overly protesting. I mean he went scathing scotch earth. He went personal , really deep. Like he has been hurt. Deeply hurt.
The only time we have seen George with a dominant car he was about to win his first Grand Prix until Mercedes fd up and the car had failures. I really hope he has a chance soon because it seems like people don't want to acknowledge him at all.

George doesn’t have the race pace to be a massive rival for him. This is the only year he’s beaten an ageing Hamilton on merit. 2022 he struggled for most of it but had huge good fortune in a lot of races
One seriously annoying thing about Max is when he gets stitched up he thinks everything is against him and makes a huge deal about it. But he does it all the time to other drivers without a second thought. As much as I’m not a huge fan of ether driver, I actually don’t have a problem with Russell doing it because he’s just playing Max’s game.

@@AllKings Max is absolutely a hypocrite. He can act all unfazed/straightforward on camera. But the smallest slight against him has Christian Horner having a tantrum on Max’s behalf. Max absolutely would do the exact same thing. But the difference is George will do it himself. While Max sends Horner to whinge on Max’s behalf. Which is kind of weak from Max.
I think people have too much of a shortsighted view on Max V GR, yes it may barely be a "rivalry" right now but I think when everything is in place it could be great. It's quite difficult to gauge how good GR can be when consistently given a race winning car, we know how slim the working window of the W15 is currently, and there is absolutely no denying the beast that Max is and his cut-throat mentality, which is what makes him the 4x champion that he is. Now comparing Senna V Prost and Max V GR is crazy when comparing pure pace and the greatness of that rivalry (of course), but I think its more about how comparable the characteristics of the rivalries and the drivers are and the potential of this 'rivalry'. As a GR fan I don't always like the things he says or does sometimes, from not owning up to his mistakes to making unforced errors when put under pressure. However his 3 year partnership with LH has shaped him a lot as a driver, he is not the "Osama Bin Russell"😂we knew from the 2022 and 2023 season, his racecraft and race pace has improved quite a bit this season which I think has gone under the radar a little bit, but fair enough after the beef in Qatar its quite hard to focus on that rn😭. But there is no denying GR's raw pace and talent, I believe it could turn out to be an exciting rivalry when the conditions are right, depending on what Mercedes manage to cook up during the off season💀. Excited for the 2025 season!
George has had his fair share of penalties for things he’s done wrong. Look at spa for example a whole race win taken away because his plank wear was too high… not like he gets away with much more than max does

@@NotCamo that's not exactly a decision that can be taken based on discretion, the numbers don't lie and they can't not penalize him. Whereas, with Max's grid penalty almost everyone agreed that it shouldn't be a penalty, but it ended up being a penalty because of the stewards' discretion- they mentioned it in the FIA document that "in they opinion" Max was going too slow, they didn't quote any solid numbers like in the case of plank wear. So you're comparing apples to oranges.

Carlos is a good driver, not a great one, he will never have the pace to be good enough to challenge Max. The couple of times over the past few years that they have been close on track Max beat him comfortably, Oscar still has plenty to prove in terms of consistency, though his peak and attitude could maybe see him battle Max. Charles I think is the only one that Max really respects as a real opponent.

I find it hilarious how he says George is with 'his FIA mates' ... when he has been the main guy calling them out Especially as George has actively defended Max especially from those GPDA statements Max doesn't like George dealing with everything behind closed doors, which is 100% fair enough - as that can be seen as being two faced. Max is very straight laced and what you see is what you get , so they were inevitably going to clash I say let them have similar cars and watch the fireworks - as George has shown he isn't afraid to take a crash with Max and will race him, like how he races everyone else Max is still the best in the sport (I'd argue easily the most complete on the grid) whilst George has still a lot to prove in a title fight. Max is both the best and the fastest qualifier in Formula 1. Thats not even up for discussion. Evidence is there for everyone to see. Leclerc is nowhere near him.
Max does everything to win ON TRACK. George does everything to win ON and OFF track. And what Max hates the most is the double faced behavior. Nice guy in public and ahole behind closed doors.

Maybe in the future it could become a similar kind of rivalry, but as of now, George has 3 race wins, and Max has 63 race wins and 4 world championships. Both Russell and Norris have a long, long way to go before they could be considered to be even remotely in the same category as titans like Verstappen, Hamilton, Senna, Prost, Schumacher etc.
For me it's not even worth acknowledging this rivalry until next year... and that's only IF mercedes have a consistent good car lol, if not then i don't see why anyone would care, george could do and say what he wants, doesn't matter if max is beating him every week. It's crazy how many people in the comments don't understand what a rivalry is. It takes more forms than just comparing career statistics - look at e.g. Hill vs Schumacher, or Hamilton vs Rosberg, or honestly even Hamilton vs Verstappen. With the exception of HAM vs ROS, they only truly spanned a few seasons, with some quibbling either side, obviously when you compare drivers like Hamilton, Schumacher, and Verstappen to their rivals their career dwarfs them, but a lot of the time its a personal beef, or short lived and intense. If we defined all rivalries like people in the comments seem to, not a single one of the all time greats could realistically claim to have rivals, which is just stupid.
He still has to prove that he is prepared for a title fight. Imo the two next best drivers after Max are Charles and Lando currently, and both have shown they weren't ready for it immediatly. Let's see...

Comparing Verstappen to Senna is fair, comparing Russell to a four-time world champion who won 51 races is a joke. Russell is very good but he's not in the world championship league of drivers.
I'm not just comparing their performance though. I'm comparing the character dynamics, and the potential for these two vastly different approaches to clash once Max & Geroge are in a title fight.

Yeah, no one had a problem with Latte Boy until then, him replacing Valtteri after almost murdering him in Imola was the end for most of us. On the gunther steiner podcast they said that normally in stewards meetings its team managers arguing over penalties and that the issue here is george personally arguing for it which the drivers havent really ever done.
My brother and I have been saying for the past few months that next year it’s going to be Max vs George. George is massively underrated. He’s been better than Lewis since he stepped up to Merc. I can’t wait for next year to see a real battle at the front between Max, George, Lando, Oscar & Charles. I really hope all the cars are almost equal so we get to see some good hard racing without the BS of car or penalties getting in the way.

Charles is, I think, the only one Max respects in every racing way. He knows he can push Lando wide, because LN won't retaliate, he knows he can do the same to Lewis, because LH will yield and fight for another day. But with Charles, when he did push him off in Austria 2019 he got the same treatment back in the UK next race. Charles will give as much shit back to Max as he gets. And that's why these two fighting is so exciting, they will BOTH push to the limit, but won't go over it. And if they will, they know they can expect the same stuff back from the other. I can't wait for next year, honestly.

We saw it in Qatar, George had the car as much as Max, but he fumbled and went from 1st to 3rd in one corner… I don't see George as a serious contender, this year showed how much consistency you need to get a championship campaign going without a car that is 2 seconds quicker than every other car from race 1 to 24… Max had to fight tooth and nails to not let it slip away and one little moment of bad luck or inconsistency can mean you're going from hero to zero (like with Lando in Brazil)… And george is currently 3rd in the world destructors championship, even ahead of the likes of Logan…

Totally agree that he's "Prostlike". I've been saying this since the start of the 2022 season. Yes, he's got the Senna "flair" - Brazil this year was definitely more Senna than Prost, regardless of Prost's talent (I have been watching F1 since the early 70s, so I do know what I'm talking about! And I was more for Prost than Senna, even though I thoroughly appreciated him too) - but after the quite bitter battles in 2021, he seemed to have flicked a switch in his mind. In Qatar, Max saw that Lando suddenly gained more than half a second and suggested on the team radio that Lando didn't lift. That, to me, is fair. Lando closed the gap during a double yellow and it's fair to call it out. Norris got on the radio and cited Hamilton for speeding in the pit lane. To me, that's also fair.
What George did, which was to lobby for a penalty which he embellished by speeding up to the back of Max who was being held up by Alonso, was over the line. George knew that he was pushing for an undeserved penalty.
I don't think Max would have been upset if George hadn't made it look worse and hadn't done a whole "cry me a river" routine to push for Max to be given an undeserved penalty.
Max was going under the delter...dissevered it fully and fair too.

In the US GP, Max was at the apex ahead of Norris and, knowing the rules, he pushed Norris until he either backed off or went off the track. Norris went off the track, accelerated and gained a position. That's a clear penalty for Norris. If Norris had given the position back, there would not have been a penalty.
In Mexico, Max was twice penalized 10-seconds: once for forcing a driver off the track and another for going off track and gaining a position (like Norris did in the US). Clearly, Max gets penalties too.
Max has always roughed my feathers a bit, but honestly, the way George behaves at times, I'm fully with Max on this.
I think max has been ruffled by how well George can play the politics. It's the only weakness (if you can call it that) in Max's game.

Why I was surprised when he actually won after getting a pole. Not worried at all since he always fµcks up at some point. Most times in the end when pressure gets to him. So yeah. He might have insights but certainly lacks the consistency needed to be a WDC.

I am a bit late to this party but there’s a big difference between racing hard on track and yes, playing the steward out in the open (Lando said he would do exactly the same) and diving in the penalty box whilst faking an injury. With one eye on the ref to see if your theatrics have succeeded. And it did, out came the card!

I do 100% what Verstappen said about how Russell acts, he’s the politician of the grid. I admire it though, he’s doing everything he can to succeed and he’s found an area where he can outperform Verstappen. It’s going to take a Herculean effort to beat Verstappen to a title and that driver will have to do everything in their power to win, and I’m more convinced that Russel has that fire in him than Norris does.
I really hope Russell gets a car that can challenge so we can see how good he is, I do think Verstappen is better but Russell will make it a proper fight (as would Leclerc, if not even more so)

I fully agree, he’s a competitor and he wants to succeed, not everyone will agree with his methods but he has to try for every single advantage even if it’s not “respectful”

We have an insignificant sample size; but if Qatar is any indication of how it could play out on track, it seems like Verstappen will come out on top.
It appears that this incident just fired up Verstappen even more- he literally told Russell that he'd take back P1 before the first corner and he did just that. And what did Russell do? He not only lost out P1 to Max, but he also lost out P2 to Lando.
Although Russell is a much better politician than Verstappen is, it doesn’t seem to be having any positive outcome for Rusell. In fact, it seems to be doing the opposite, an angry Verstappen who feels that he's been wronged is going to be much fiercer on track. I genuinely believe Russell wouldn't come out on top 9 out of 10 times he does things like this.
Also, we all know how well Verstappen knows the rules and how well he uses it by always being at the very edge of what's acceptable. So if George is going to try pull something off like Qatar qualifying, what's gonna stop Max from doing the same? I wouldn't be surprised if Max starts doing the same thing that George did- knowing full well that there were cars ahead making a gap, being able to see clearly cars going slow and still driving fast up to the back of a slow car and moving last minute, then complaining that they were driving too slowly/ dangerously.
If princess george wants to be a politician, then maybe she should listen to what Max said, which is to bugger off. Go get a seat in the English parliament. It's racing you do on tarmac, not politics and it's quite clear princess george fails at the racing part.
i guess it's a sign of F1 as a whole not really being used to dutch drivers being at the top, but max's whole issue with the penalty wasn't even so much the penalty itself, it was george's conduct surrounding it. max can and will "snitch" (see lando the literal next day), but he will do so in full view of everyone, he's open and honest like that. george was being two-faced about it, saying one thing to the media, and saying something completely different behind closed doors. if you want to piss off ANY dutch person, go and do that. that's why max was this aggressive about it, it's quite clearly something he genuinely despises.
Well said. Comments here show there are too many fans who cannot understand perspective. The two incidents couldn't be more different. Max always keeps his cool which is reflected in his driving. Those who lost their cool ruined their own race or in Norris and McLaren's case lost the season.
Norris get penalized is slamdunk. He was the only one to ignore obvious double-yellow flags. Lando himself said he would have done the same. Max needs to keep all the rules in mind, because all those British just want to cheat and snitch. So Max only has to drive faster with no issues.
Nobody except the Dutch care about the nationality, it is the behaviour. Verstappen is a precious, entitled tit. And it shows. He thinks everything has to be given to him, he shows no respect for officials, or other drives and would be nowhere without his superior British chassis. This whole gentleman Lewis narrative is so daft. 2007-2012 he was absolutely elbows out at McLaren - especially in 2011 and 2012! He was super aggressive with Nico 2014-2016, routinely dumping Nico off track at turn one. He raced very cleanly 2017-2020 because there was no-one giving him a hard time. Mercedes changed their rules of engagement in-house so that the drivers couldn't split strategy, basically hogtying Bottas in races as he was starting behind Lewis two thirds of the time, and no matter what Andrew Benson says, the Mercedes was very much the best package in 2018 for Vettel's half-hearted title challenge.
I think Lewis seems like a great guy off track, and is 100% in the conversation for the GOAT, but people need to stop acting like he hasn't shown the same wheel to wheel ruthlessness as the other multiple world champs who have come before him. We see people nick a single title here and there when they have a golden year, but I would say it's pretty rare for a MULTIPLE champions not to be ruthless. Schumi, Alonso, Senna, Prost, Piquet, Lauda all BRUTAL when they needed to be. I'd say maybe Hakkinen is the most recent exception.

Max has been the most mature on Camera since he was 17. Look at the state of Hamilton with his childish snipes.
The comparison of Max having Championships and George only 3 or 4 wins interesting. One spent 3 years at the back of the grid. While one won his first Championship in 2021.
Then finally gets to Merc and he is in a Mid Team. But, still manges to get few wins, poles, podiums.
So where and with what was he supposed to win or at least fight for wins and Championship.
I mean in 2022 Ferrari were fighting for Championship and bottled it.

George is so underrated.
The problem with Max vs George is that they ruffle a lot of feathers. They are both very vocal and usually refuse to accept that they are wrong/at fault, at least publicly. It can make them unlikeable to some fans and even drivers as they have so much confidence in themselves and their opinion. This is why they are butting heads and usually do when they are near each other on track.
It’s not really a problem though because it is a reason to watch the sport. Everybody remembers 2021 and 2016 and Prost vs Senna etc. because of the rivalry and the tension and that tension is there between Max and George clearly.
It’s just tension not a rivalry now though since George has not had a title contending car nor have Max and George really had a similar level car at any point so the battles have been few and far between.
I don’t think there’s as much of a gap as people think too because with Russell there is definite quali pace and when he’s had the car he’s delivered. My issue for Russell would be certain lapses in concentration like COTA when he turned into Sainz, Singapore and Melbourne when he crashed etc.
My money is on Max though, he is clearly special.
In a proper battle for the title, we have a very strong grid to compete with Max so from what I’ve seen:
- Max beats Lando (LN hasn’t got the confidence in himself that MV has so recovering from worse moments could be harder for him than Max)
- Max beats George (Maxs consistency and a few mistakes from George, mistake free George and it’s very close)
- Max vs Piastri (idk, a growing Piastri is a serious threat to Max, OP keeps on the upwards trajectory and we’ve a serious battle)
- Max edges Lewis (Would be a race by race championship, purely depends on the teams development and who has the faster car more often, Max is in his prime right now so I think could maybe just get him)
Max vs Carlos (Would love to see Carlos fight for a championship, such a great guy and great driver, Carlos’ key strength is intelligence whereas Maxs is the talent and instinct he has, I think Max is special and is a proven champion so I would favour him)
Max vs Charles (This is the moneymaker, we have to get this properly done, Charles this year in a title contending car and Max has a problem still, Charles is almost ahead of LN now and the McLaren has been the fastest car overall, mistake free Charles in a functioning championship level team (probably not Ferrari) has the best chance of beating MV in similar machinery, also is able to race MV well when he must when we have seen LH, LN and GR struggle to do so cleanly and effectively)
If 2025 is like this year but closer it will be so good. The calibre of drivers is elite especially in the top 4 teams with MV, LN, OP, LH, GR and CL all fighting for the same position and who knows maybe Antonelli can step in the Merc and be special or the second red bull seat is taken by a stronger competitor (Sainz/Alonso, Checo just not at that level).
Finally, Fernando edges Max, there we go I said it.
I honestly do not think any of the drivers like George. I think most of them like Max a lot more as he is a chill guy outside of the track and always talks straight.

That was a perfect introduction to the 2025 title protagonists, pointing out there strenghts and weaknesses, but most importantly there characters.
At the beginning of his career I didnt like Max for his "over the limit driving style", but I liked and respected him more and more over the years for his "honest ruthlessness" and "no bullshit attitude".
I would love to see him in a title fight with Oscar (my favourite driver), because for me they are the purest racers on the grid.
But against all the others it would be very interesting as well :)

Max v Fernando, Charles and Lewis is more interesting. Oscar is on the cusp of greatness, better than Lando IMO, but he isn't in the same league as the 1st tier guys.
I don't think Max would ever see George as THE rival. I think he sees Charles in this position and respects him in a diffrent way. Personally i don't see Max and George have a rivalry like Senna and Prost. I get the similarities but they are not each others biggest rival
Not too long ago we saw russel make some very crucial and naive mistakes during the race, escpecially compared to lewis. Max is a different beast in terms of aggression and natural talent, and above all consistency. Russel still has lots of learning to do in my opinion.

And I’d also add, the W13 and W14 were such a handful that even Lewis find them challenging and chose to leave Mercedes because of it.
Like, if Lewis finds them difficult and he’s a 7x WDC, it’s not really fair to hold it against George too much.

9:55 I fully disagree with you on this one. At that time what Max did was exactly within the rules, his frontwing was in front of Lando at the Apex, which means it was his corner. That is the rule. In the next race the FIA decided they had enough and gave Max 2x 10 sec. penalty. Which means this rule will be changed next year, if not he will keep doing it.
If you think that’s the rule, then please look at highlights on UA-cam lap 1 of that race at the same corner Carlos Sainz’s overtake on max. Then come back here and tell me why max didn’t get a penalty for the same thing that Lando does

They're are actually my two favourite drivers if I have to choose. Them and Piastri have similar driving style. Unapologetically ruthless and competitive. They're the same, yet different. Agree and concur 💯 with your takes. Different personalities and cultures and temperament.
George has shown from day 1 of coming to Mercedes that every time he gets an opportunity to fully compete with Max , hes does.
Example, Spain 2022 impressive defense. Brazil 2022 Sprint. Baku 2023. Monaco 2024. Has jumped on race starts. Yes, the Mercedes car didn't have RB pace this year so he couldn't keep positions gained.
People forget that George, Leclerc and Ocon have raced Max in their Junior Categories and they've beaten him. So you can see its those drivers that are not awed by him. They don't fear him. Thats why he gets infuriated by them. I mean, he almost punched Ocon previously.
I think George surprised Max and Team that he can fight at the Stewards like RB has done a million times before. Most Team would shrink when they got there. The fury I suspect has nothing to do with what George has supposedly done, but shocked that they lost it and George was willing to fight.
Also, I was once a naughty teen. Therefore, I got into alot of trouble and usually will be the first to run and state my side of the story and overly dramatise. Max reminded me of that. Usually, if i am at the right side of the argument I didn't rush to speak to anyone who would listen. Max was overly protesting. I mean he went scathing scotch earth. He went personal , really deep. Like he has been hurt. Deeply hurt.

One seriously annoying thing about Max is when he gets stitched up he thinks everything is against him and makes a huge deal about it. But he does it all the time to other drivers without a second thought. I think people have too much of a shortsighted view on Max V GR, yes it may barely be a "rivalry" right now but I think when everything is in place it could be great. It's quite difficult to gauge how good GR can be when consistently given a race winning car, we know how slim the working window of the W15 is currently, and there is absolutely no denying the beast that Max is and his cut-throat mentality, which is what makes him the 4x champion that he is.
Now comparing Senna V Prost and Max V GR is crazy when comparing pure pace and the greatness of that rivalry (of course), but I think its more about how comparable the characteristics of the rivalries and the drivers are and the potential of this 'rivalry'.
As a GR fan I don't always like the things he says or does sometimes, from not owning up to his mistakes to making unforced errors when put under pressure. However his 3 year partnership with LH has shaped him a lot as a driver, he is not the "Osama Bin Russell"😂we knew from the 2022 and 2023 season, his racecraft and race pace has improved quite a bit this season which I think has gone under the radar a little bit, but fair enough after the beef in Qatar its quite hard to focus on that rn😭. But there is no denying GR's raw pace and talent, I believe it could turn out to be an exciting rivalry when the conditions are right, depending on what Mercedes manage to cook up during the off season💀. Excited for the 2025 season!

Whereas, with Max's grid penalty almost everyone agreed that it shouldn't be a penalty, but it ended up being a penalty because of the stewards' discretion- they mentioned it in the FIA document that "in they opinion" Max was going too slow, they didn't quote any solid numbers like in the case of plank wear.

Carlos is a good driver, not a great one, he will never have the pace to be good enough to challenge Max. The couple of times over the past few years that they have been close on track Max beat him comfortably, Oscar still has plenty to prove in terms of consistency, though his peak and attitude could maybe see him battle Max. Charles I think is the only one that Max really respects as a real opponent.
This is a rivalry in the same way I have a rivalry with that pebble I had in my shoe a week ago.

It's crazy how many people in the comments don't understand what a rivalry is. It takes more forms than just comparing career statistics - look at e.g. Hill vs Schumacher, or Hamilton vs Rosberg, or honestly even Hamilton vs Verstappen. With the exception of HAM vs ROS, they only truly spanned a few seasons, with some quibbling either side, obviously when you compare drivers like Hamilton, Schumacher, and Verstappen to their rivals their career dwarfs them, but a lot of the time its a personal beef, or short lived and intense.
If we defined all rivalries like people in the comments seem to, not a single one of the all time greats could realistically claim to have rivals, which is just stupid.
He still has to prove that he is prepared for a title fight. Imo the two next best drivers after Max are Charles and Lando currently, and both have shown they weren't ready for it immediatly. Let's see...

I think F1 needs these 2 to have a season battle. George shouldn’t be pushed over like Norris has this season. Like in the past George has said “just because he’s max verstappen doesn’t mean I will let him pass”
Nobody lets Max just pass them; defending against Max is not unique to George. He seems to be under the delusion that others just let Max pass, and only he defends against Max.
Also, he literally just let Max pass him before the first corner of the first lap of Qatar, where was his defence? Was he sleeping? He even let Lando pass and ended up P3 after the first corner.🤣

For 2025 we must consider also Antonelli and Lawson(probably), they probably won't challenge for the title but they will fight a lot with those 6 drivers that Tommo mentioned. We don't know how Antonelli will react but Liam will probably fight hard.
Every time I'm about to stop hating George for the shit he pulled on Bottas in Imola 2021, he gives me another reason.
Yeah, no one had a problem with Latte Boy until then, him replacing Valtteri after almost murdering him in Imola was the end for most of us. Since then, he's hit everything but the safetycar and cried the whole time. This time his cry-baby act cost Max a pole and a penalty point. That I do not forgive. Every driver will do anything they can to get themselves ahead. George did it for qualifying, Max did it with the yellow flags, Lando did it about Lewis and the pit limiter…
It is not about calling it out, Its about saying in the media it wasn't a big deal, but telling the stewards it was an deliberate attempt to screw him over and that Max did it on purpose.

Funny how Max says things like "Im used to it" "It doesnt bother me" and his driving suggest he's actually telling the truth. Notice how Norris is now also trying to be cool, he lost this season due to getting too worked up and his team were partly to blame. Even McLaren are backtracking now 😂

In my opinion there are 4 guys on the grid who “have that dog in them” so to speak. To me it’s max, Charles, Oscar, and George. I think these are the 4 guys who would be willing to cross the line in order to win and who aren’t afraid to get their elbows out
I am a max fan but isn't it ignorant for max to be shocked by Russel rallying a penalty so hard? Any gain is a gain as Max knows himself so he shouldn't get so flustered when everything in F1 is done to get that last 1%. Take Red Bull calling out how they think the other teams are doing to the fia

My guess is thay Russell tried to push for a bigger penalty than what was given and insisted on it.
On the gunther steiner podcast they said that normally in stewards meetings its team managers arguing over penalties and that the issue here is george personally arguing for it which the drivers havent really ever done.
My brother and I have been saying for the past few months that next year it’s going to be Max vs George. George is massively underrated. He’s been better than Lewis since he stepped up to Merc. I can’t wait for next year to see a real battle at the front between Max, George, Lando, Oscar & Charles. I really hope all the cars are almost equal so we get to see some good hard racing without the BS of car or penalties getting in the way.
