Remember when..." And no matter how many times I told him for the 12 years I was around him almost every day he did the same thing..I even got mad at him a few times and he still would go back to doing it not even 45 minutes later, so I just go used to his stupidity.

Don't worry it's actually a really good way to show that your listening (as long as you actually are), as well as a good trigger to tell your brain "hey pay attention" the way it's portrayed here is overboard obviously for comedic purposes but more people should be "active listeners" it keeps you and the the person talking or telling the story more engaged.

We Nordic people are often called out for not being able to do small talk. My Finnish friend spent a year in USA and despite being a really social and cheerful people thought he had a depression because he was relatively quiet and respectful during conversations. Is that really such a bad thing? At least we listen to you until the end of the sentence!

Americans in general are particularly extraverted though and it's a trait that is encouraged culturally. Where as Finns are some of the most introverted people in the world and stuff like small talk and eye contact just isn't that important to them. There are of course both extraverts and introverts in both places but they are culturally different.

this is super interesting . In Seattle people are known for similar personality traits. I read that quite a few people from Nordic countries immigrated to the Seattle region and over time it has affected the culture. People there are supposedly less "friendly" there than other parts of the U.S.. this phenomena even has a name : the "Seattle freeze" lol.

I could tolerate someone doing that, if he actually listens.. But not while it is in a lecture or class and the lecturer is talking to the whole audience and there is this one guy going "uhuh. Sure. Thats what I was thinking" as he was the only one. The worst one I ever met was at a planetarium show and it was dark and I could not see this guy but he was as loud as the lecturer and I cringed for the whole show.

My sister in law is like that, albeit not quite that extreme. Still I had the impression that she wanted to make fun of me or wanted me to stop talking, so I asked my girl about that habit. She explained to me that this is quite common and is intended as a way to show the other person that you're listening. Took it as that, never have been weirded out by it since then and yeah, she REALLY is a great listener. So meh, a weird quirk to get used to, but not nearly as bad as some other things I've experienced.
