I say restore it minimally. Bring it back to factory spec with as little modification as possible. Dowel and refill the broken bridge posts. Source an original tailpiece. Rewire as much as you can with vintage spec/correct wiring. Build an accurate repro pickguard. Re-fret it only if necessary or if it already has been re-fretted. The pots and pickups can be carefully brought back to life. It really does not need very much to bring it to good health.
I've had dreams about something like that happening, it's the only way I'll ever have one. Looks like JB's 'Snakebite' guitar, 2 snake-bite-like holes in the top from a former Bigsby being mounted on it. 8( --gary

Agreed. Oil the board, do the BARE MINIMUM to make it work, do NOT “clean it”. Done. Polishing that guitar is probably not going to improve its value and will certainly erase the visible part of its history. Whatever happens, I hope there is plenty of photo and video done before someone “devintages” it.
@@trapland7102 I 100% agree. If the goal is to sell this guitar it would not likely benefit from a normal cleaning that would be performed for any guitar sale. IMHO, one of the main attributes this guitar offers is the 1970s era grime and use. Leave it as is and let the new owner decide what to do. Heck, even the bronze acoustic string it wears is a very interesting part of the story. In this case I believe less is more.

Amazing story. Looking at all the photos on your website I got a bit sick to my stomach seeing all the abuse this once-beautiful instrument suffered through in its first 20 years. I mean, the filth alone is disgusting. But, of course, an expert guitar restorer probably looks at this and says “no problem!” The top is absolutely gorgeous, and, to my relatively untrained eye, very unique. Also, the back and neck look to be in pretty decent shape, all things considered. I mean it could be a lot worse, right? Really looking forward to seeing this after the expert restoration is completed. From now on this guitar is going to be getting the total red carpet treatment. It’s going to be a stunner when it’s all said and done.
Now that this is no longer a new find and has already been restored and sold, played live onstage can you post what the value of it was "AS IS"? I am just curious to what a very neglected early 1960 burst with changes from stock done to it is worth these days? I already know what these sell for in good shape.
The best thing you can do with this guitar is send it to me lol. Please restore it . It would be a crime not to put it back to its glory. I'll dream bout this one tonight lol
As an owner of an old beat up guitar that might be worth something someday, I’d say give it a good cleaning and check it out first. Maybe try to copy the old pickups and make new ones. See how it sounded for him back then
I'm gonna be honest - I'm jealous. What a beautiful guitar - I Don't care that it needs some work, it's magical and very special for a guitarist to own and play... I'm sure it has its own MOJO. And I'm waiting to see what the shops next move is with it. Please don't sell it to B or 5 you know who those 2 guys are or to some doctor or dentist who just hangs it in a vanity case this baby wants and needs to be played..
Great story. I would suggest preservation & conservation. lovely old timer. once you have it up & running, please post a video so we can all hear that glorious tone. Few things in life sound better.
That's the plan!
Repair the electronics and bridge and refret it but otherwise keep it as is it looks so good all beat up like that. Killer guitar man
What an absolutely incredible find!
Oh wow.... Can't wait to see what becomes of this beautiful guitar!
Me neither
I say restore it minimally. Bring it back to factory spec with as little modification as possible. Dowel and refill the broken bridge posts. Source an original tailpiece. Rewire as much as you can with vintage spec/correct wiring. Build an accurate repro pickguard. Re-fret it only if necessary or if it already has been re-fretted. The pots and pickups can be carefully brought back to life. It really does not need very much to bring it to good health.
That's basically what is going to happen.
@@ATBGuitars Looking forward to it! Thank you for sharing this story.
I've had dreams about something like that happening, it's the only way I'll ever have one. Looks like JB's 'Snakebite' guitar, 2 snake-bite-like holes in the top from a former Bigsby being mounted on it. 8( --gary
I would greatly enjoy cleaning this guitar!! That pickguard switch is probably to change to out-of-phase.
Mate! My heart would have started pounding when I see the case and probably a heart attack is to follow when I open it!
Yes, it was a bit like that!
Fantastic discovery and video. My recommendation would have been to give the guitar to me if it hadn't already gone to someone else ;)
Great story….enjoy yr channel…from NYC ..🇺🇸🤙🏻I hope the money serves them well…and hope they got a good deal….
Thanks. Everyone is happy with the deal which is the way it should be!
Wow, to be a custodian like that must be a complete honour, looking forward to it's progress and actually hearing it. I wonder if JB has got wind of it yet ?
He has indeed!
@@ATBGuitars has it got a nickname yet ?
@@george-wg6ug A most excellent question george105
Wow, what an epic guitar! Please just fix it and leave it as it is. Btw. There are few things more sexy than a vintage bigsby on a real burst. What a stunning instrument! And thank you for sharing this with us!
100% agree with you
Honestly I would go back to Original and find a period correct stop bar tail piece for the Guitar. Congratulations on the Find.
It's just an incredible story. Once in a lifetime. I want to have all the details of this guitar and its restoration !
Thanks !
Glad you enjoyed it!
6500 Pounds? Tell ya what, leave it alone and I'll double your money on it!
But seriously, good thing she ran into an honest dealer. I've had people try to rip me off bc they think you don't know what you have (never a forgotten burst, but I did have a dealer try to sell me a fake as a real one).
I can't wait to finally hear it. Bravo on the great job you guys did with the seller. I'll be checking out your site.
Cheers from Florida, USA!!
Yes, the top is quite unique!
Now that this is no longer a new find and has already been restored and sold, played live onstage can you post what the
value of it was "AS IS"? I am just curious to what a very neglected early 1960 burst with changes from stock done to it is worth these days?
I already know what these sell for in good shape.
The best thing you can do with this guitar is send it to me lol. Please restore it . It would be a crime not to put it back to its glory. I'll dream bout this one tonight lol
As an owner of an old beat up guitar that might be worth something someday, I’d say give it a good cleaning and check it out first. Maybe try to copy the old pickups and make new ones. See how it sounded for him back then
Its beautiful as is, not in bad shape at all. Crazy!
THERE STILL OUT THERE!
You have to at least plug her in!! Im amazed to see you guys have moved to my previous office space! Small world!
Met a collector over 50 years ago, Martins, got to play, little did I know at the time the stuff I was holding.
I'm gonna be honest - I'm jealous. What a beautiful guitar - I Don't care that it needs some work, it's magical and very special for a guitarist to own and play... I have a 54 goldtop that I picked up as a teen (I'm now 60) - It's a bit rough but I've had many magical times with it... Damn I want a 59 or 60 burst so bad!
sorry...you can't have it....Joe Bonamassa picked this one up...for around 150 k.....
I dont know a 54 Goldtop is probably higher up on my list of gotta have guitars over 59 burst
check out '59 conversions by Jim Weyland. JamCity Guitars.
I agree with what someone posted here already. This guitar needs a name.
It has a temporary name of 'Dirty Burst'
Amazing..beautiful...Stories like this still happen. I will love to hear what happens to this guitar. Its a fairytale type of story. Good review.
Thanks for listening
I can tell you! Joe Bonamassa bought it, shipped it off to the states to have a bit of work done, then he plans to tour with it. Cool eh
for Les Paul fans this must be like finding the Holy Grail. Did angels sing when you realized what you actually had in your hands? Just an incredible story.
Agreed, his heart most likely started racing at just the sight of the case.
Correct..!
I would love to hear what happens next.
What a story and beautiful guitar as it sits.
Looking forward to what comes next! My vote is to restore it to original bridge without Bigsby
those bigsbys are as ugly as they come.....🙂
