This is a tough crowd. I’ve never seen so many people bashing a pro giving free and helpful advice. PS. I just picked up the Beauty Dish Switch and it’s awesome.
Hi Joel, When you say it has more of a portrait feel as opposed to lifestyle. Could you elaborate on that please? Would you class lifestyle as more airy and natural as opposed to the HSS approach? Cheers.

Awesome video. I'm one who has difficulty learning D/B. I do have a question related to your editing process. In what order do you do your editing process, i.e. skin retouching, removing imperfections and D/B?
Hi Joel, love your work & your tutorials. It’s great seeing your techniques knowing that they have been used at the highest level. But can I ask? Is this the technique used to make you look so young in your channel image?
Really wow, so a photographer that does not use photoshop and keeps things straight out of the camera, honest and real doesn't seem to stand a chance because most marketing photos are so processed it's what the commercial world want, what a pity. Josef Sudek, Henri Cartier Bresson, Ansel Adams just to name a few did not use photoshop.
Hi Mario, I see your point but Ansel Adams was the forefather of darkroom techniques and his peers considered that cheating. Photoshop/Lightroom is the modern day equivalent. None of those mentioned ever exhibited straight out the camera shots... Why would you?
@@joelgrimes I know what you mean, I am a convert now, there is no doubt that it enhances images when done in a healthy way, I was naive, I am sorry Joel, I think your work is outstanding and you are a true inspiration
Yes. What you are doing is darkening or lightening the 50% gray overlay layer that sits on top of the original color photo. You can try something with one of your own photos. Duplicate a photo. On one photo make a new layer and fill that layer with 40% gray. Change the layer to overlay. On the other photo do the same but fill the new layer with 60% gray and change it to overlay. You'll see the difference in lighter tone vs a darker tone.
Technic is good but, I think you are doing the opposite of what to do in D&B because you give it a flat face when you have to give it depth. In short, you soften too much instead of making the dark areas darker and the light areas lighter!
Holy... I can't even. "How to dodge and burn" with a miniature, where the before picture is deliberately extra butchered. Also, "start out with a model with unbelievably perfect skin" ffs. During video make sure that no brush strokes or outlines are visible. Do not ever zoom in, cause youtube compression sure is going to provide sufficient detail, like a 4k screen would. Never mention that dodging is lightening, burning is darkening. Only briefly mention, what is actually being corrected and call it "taking out that wobble here", without any explanation which areas require it and make picture better. "I'm going to make my brush a littlle bigger" without any indication, what the brush size was and should be.

Is it non-destructive until you flatten the file?
